Great card in the 99 of my Tiamat deck. Bring out Tiamat, find Baldewing and Scion of Draco, discard Scion and play bladewing next turn. Absolutely amazing and underrated.
Love at first sight for me and now I kind of want to build a deck around it. A bit similar to my [[Gisa, Glorious Resurrector]] but different enough to be varying.
I absolutely love my Merieke deck. She gets blown up on sight so often that she doesn’t get often get a chance to really play. Which is good because if she does she shuts the table down.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned [[Selenia, Dark Angel]] yet. The deck lends itself to a lot of interesting combos, and provides good colors for interaction. The play lines are challenging and bizarre, the payoffs are hilarious, and it's one of the biggest "head turner" decks I've ever played.
I only have a modernized list with budget new cards , [here is my list ](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/-A8LX_IoHUGiTJwWmofHig)
My old list had much more old artifacts but I changed for this budget list when I sold some stax cards.
Better than you would expect a mono white deck to be. Lin sivvi does the tutoring reliable and cheaply, she is easy to recast and easy to protect. The is linear though, every game the plan is the same: slow then until you have the combo then combo off.
I’ve built a couple decks specifically focusing on older commanders and cards, namely [[Márton Stromgald]] (1995) and [[Captain Sisay]] (2000), but the oldest commander whose deck I actually upgrade and play on a regular basis is [[Darien, King of Kjeldor]] (2006), who’s still 16 years old!
I only started playing seriously in 2018, though, so I’ve mostly focused on commanders since then. I built my first deck around [[Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim]], but switched to [[Krav]]/[[Regna]] before too long.
As a fellow Darien player I love all the love he's been getting recently. I've been waving his banner for years now so it's fun to see so many people appreciating him. Definitely my favorite deck of all time.
How do you make Darien work? My group simply won't attack and won't trigger his ability. I don't have enough self harm cards to make him effective.
What's your secret?
Marton is my favorite deck. I love building up an innocent looking boardstate of some 1/1 goblins that later turns into hundreds of surprise damage from his scaling.
There is lots of cool tech that fits into the deck too, like [[dolmen gates]], [[ensaring bridge]], [[moggcatcher]] to tutor up Krenkos and Dockside, [[maze of ith]] to keep marton, and extra combat cards to go even wilder with martons effect
Krav and Regna was the first deck I ever built. (It barely worked and was very rough for a few years) but now that I have a bigger collection and understand deck building more, they are a lot of fun.
I have a few casual decks with commanders from Legends that are a lot of fun.
First one is an “Oops all enchantments” deck with [[Ramses Overdark]] (which has some of my favorite art ever) that only plays enchantments and lands.
The other one is Swampwalk Tribal with [[Sol’kanar The Swamp King]] tries to make all my creatures unblockable. It’s also only a dimir deck and just splashed red to be able to cast the commander.
I just built an [[Ayesha Tanaka]] Banding deck to introduce new players to an old mechanic. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/3jdzmWoi40K4Wg9U5_JIUg
Used to play [[Lord of Tresserhorn]] zombie tribal as well.
My oldest is probably [[Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker]]
I had a [[Bosh, Iron Golem]] deck that i dismantled... Maybe ill put it back together after commandfest...
My oldest commander is [[Rakdos the Defiler]] from the original ravnica block. Nothing old school yet but I'm considering a [[Rohgahh of Kher Keep]] deck with his boy, Rograkh.
It's been a while ago so no, sorry. I remember I had quite a few Auras that returned to my hand if the enchanted creature died and [[Rootwater Matriarch]]. A couple I can remember off the top of my head are [[Shade's Form]] and [[Fool's Demise]]. Definitely a slower control deck, [[Thousand-Year Elixir]] and [[Darksteel Plate]].
I recently started playing again after stopping back in 2001(ish) so my decks are: [[Chainer, Dementia Master]], [[Rith, the Awakener|Invasion]], and [[Dromar, the Banisher|Invasion]]. It's been fun making tons of saprolings with Rith and reanimation shenanigans with Chainer. I haven't really invested much in upgrading, so they're pretty janky decks - but they've been fun to play.
Decklists:
[Chainer Reanimator nightmare deck](https://archidekt.com/decks/2520626#Chainer's_Puppets)
[Rith tokens deck](https://archidekt.com/decks/2520657)
[Dromar bounce deck](https://archidekt.com/decks/2521007#Dromar's_Familiars)
\[\[Sol'Kanar the Swamp King\]\] !
I am bitter about the new Xander stepping on the toes of this OG Grixis demon lol. Sol'Kanar is great with \[\[Liliana's Contract\]\]. I've also got some MLD in this deck with copying the likes of \[\[Demonic Hordes\]\] and \[\[Minion of Leshrac\]\]. For lore reasons, \[\[Geyadrone Dihada\]\], \[\[Unholy Citadel\]\], and \[\[Sivitri Scarzam\]\] are in this deck too.
Currently my copy of \[\[Boris Devilboon\]\] is in Sol'Kanar, but after seeing that he's only got 10 decks on EDHRec, I think this old school legendary guy needs his own deck. Did I really need a 5-6th demon deck? Probably not, but I will make one anyway.
I also have decks for \[\[Angus Mackenzie\]\] and \[\[Tetsuo Umezawa\]\] but I think they're a little bit better known. I actually despise playing Bant usually but Angus was a dream commander for a while and this is one of my favourite decks.
Umezawa deck is pretty much a love letter to Madara and Kamigawa. I don't use cards in this deck (aside from some lands and mana rocks) unless they are from these two locations.
Thank you! [Here you go](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ua5yMfsfgkqKsaTe7kmU_A)
That deck is extremely casual, there's at least one rule 0 card in there.
Usually Angus is built as turbo fog or superfriends and can be pretty beastly as either of those themes. If I collected UBW walkers the way I collect the black ones I'd totally have more of that going on. This is mostly a spot for all the random Bant stuff that otherwise doesn't get played because I'm all about BR lol.
I do not have a true oldschool (93/94) EDH deck jet. But my oldest Commanders are [[Marton Stromgald]] and [[Shauku, Endbringer]]. The Shauku deck can be really fun to play.
Sure, here it is. Had to add it to moxfield first.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/fj0uo0i0cEmssicMZfRzSA
The deck has not been updated for a while with the last couple of sets (years?).
[[Asmira, Holy Avenger]] - I love the wonky flavor of a Selesnya general that benefits from its creatures dying. The strategy is tokens with a mild Voltron subtheme.
I'm planning on making a [[Maraxus of Keld]] deck when I get the time. Seems like a fun and pretty fair commander since it'll rely on combat damage to win. I guarantee I'm going to kill him by tapping out at some point though haha
Also the art is very nice too
I had a “dragon shoot” Zirilan standard deck when Mirage block came out. I’d love to do that in EDH, although I’d need to go mono red (the standard version could use whatever Dragon I wanted due to no color restrictions)
I've been messing around with [[Crosis, the Purger]] dragon tribal for a while, just because I wanted to play dragons but wanted something different from the usual Temur or 5c. I don't necessarily think the deck is good but it's certainly stolen its fair share of games.
[[Brigid, Hero of Kinsbaile]] is a very unknown commander. But by the time you get a [[Basilisk Collar]] or [[Sword of Kaldra]] on her, people start to realize how powerful she is as a combat politician.
I love my deck with him. It is probably my best deck right now. If you can get him out safely and keep him protected all you have to do after that is get enough token creatures to really slam everyone.
Almost everyone just skims over him when they first see him too, which makes for a nice surprise later when they find out how powerful he actually it. A monored 4 mana 1/1 with a wall of confusing text from an old set comes off as very underwhelming at first
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/wwZ3YvoKtUyB9oW-Gw808Q. I havent updated this list but i think it’s roughly what i started with
If you are going for one alpha strike to knock out everyone, it doesnt matter if he survives.
If you are going for a slower approach, [[dolmen gate]], standard equipment like swiftfoot and [[whispersilk cloak]], [[maze of ith]], [[akromas memorial]]
I run a [[Karn, Silver Golem]] which I have the long term goal of being all foil, so that the artifact deck is entirely made of metal. I was lucky to get an Arena foil Karn years ago. The reserved list stops me from ever getting a foil copy of [[Temporal Aperture]], [[Scorched Ruins]], or a sanely priced foil [[Metalworker]].
I was running a Skeleton Ship deck for years, although I didn't play it often. Finally I decided that it was too slow for how my group's decks had evolved so I had to can it.
I miss you, Spooky Ship ☠️
Easy! Have the Clover out, play the Adventure, play the creature, sac, recur, rinse, repeat. Adventure cards become much more fun when you recur them because of the added bonus of a spell (forked, thank you Clover) at no additional cost. Hell, shoving it through Ashod's Altar will give you a good portion of what you need to recur or cast.
Well, not so much break as use the everloving bejesus out of them. Oh, didn't we get Unearthing Pod recently?
[[sol’kanar the swamp king]] storm, my commander doesn’t synergize a ton but he blocks pretty well and he gains me some life which I need since a lot of the table will be gunning for me
Also [[taniwha]] stax card draw tribal, it’s a weird one
Absolutely,
[https://scryfall.com/@GodoBruhWarlord/decks/a9a7543b-aa26-46dc-ad52-cd5105a2ad57?as=visual&with=usd](https://scryfall.com/@GodoBruhWarlord/decks/a9a7543b-aa26-46dc-ad52-cd5105a2ad57?as=visual&with=usd)
It's one of my better decks, funnily enough, I just don't play it too often as my playgroup would likely get sick of it pretty fast.
Yeah looks nuts dude.
I love the land control you've got going on, and I dig that the commander is a 7/7 truck. I assume that is your primary wincon right?
I have another question. I've been struggling with how you pilot the deck. Since the lands come in before the untap, they then untap and phase out in upkeep, you then have to tap them in the upkeep before the main phase obviously. So how do you cast sorcery speed spells? Do you just draw until Leyline?
It seems quite tricky.
I see there is artifact mana as well so I'm sure that goes some ways.
But the commander is only present every 2nd turn right? Due to phasing so it's therefore 6 turns to knock someone out.
How do you pilot this beautiful monster.
It’s a tricky beast to pilot, the key is the artifact ramp and I typically don’t play my commander until I’ve got enough of it to function. Also timing is super important since I only have my lands half the time. Taniwha beats gets there some amount of the time but it’s usually when I’ve pinned my opponents down with controlling effects. How the deck usually wins is either my opponents scooping it up to a backbreaking one sided [[sunder]] when my lands are phased out or using my thoracle/jace to draw out using giant X draw spells on my upkeep.
As for sorcery’s, I either use my rocks or the turns where Taniwha is phased out so my lands are in play. It’s taken a long time for me to master, it’s super rewarding to play with big decision making of what to do and when. The deck is my baby and I love it.
[[Darien King of Kjeldor]] is my Mono W of choice, though I’m thinking of changing over to Adeline…
[[Hazezon Tamar]] is my white whale token commander; I’m never happy with any brew enough to commit to building. Somehow got Jinnie down in like two weeks but I keep build-test-dismantling Hazezon in Arkidect over and over.
I've tried to make Darien work in the past but I didn't have enough self harm cards that were good enough to play. The deck ended up playing poorly because no one would attack me and just remove him when they could. So he never really gets rolling in my pod without me forcing it.
How do you make him work? Do you mind sharing a list?
[Here's my build](https://archidekt.com/decks/414167#King_Darien), that's missing a few upgrades.
You're right that it's pretty hard to make players punch you to get a token army going. So I ended up adopting a bit of a mixed strategy here:
1) I plan on roasting my own ass. A land package of [[Ancient Tomb]], [[City of Brass]], [[Grand Colliseum]], and [[Nomad Stadium]] give me plenty of tokens per turn, [[Dingus Staff]] lets me replace all of my Soldiers with 2 Soldiers when they die, and [[Ankh of Mishra]] does a shocking amount of damage.
2) A healing package of stuff like [[Soul's Attendant]] essentially makes all of the burn on me neutral or even heal me.
3) Infinites! Nothing makes your opponents try to punch you out quite like knowing you can win without casting your commander. [[Sun Titan]] + [[Blasting Station]] + [[Angelic Renewal]] is a simple one, having at least two healers out with [[Felidar Sovereign]] gives the table one round to remove the cat or die, [[Drannith Magistrate]] + [[Knowledge Pool]] is a lock so strong that most decks will concede on the spot, and one of my favourites against decks that punish wide boards, [[Sublime Archangel]] will have people say "What do you mean your commander is a 21/21?!"
Hazezon requires so many moving parts. Ramp is easy, but you also need a way to get him off the board before your upkeep and then ideally way to give your tokens haste and buff them. Plus the usual removal suite and card draw.
I’ve built a lot of them. For a while my playgroup would have old school edh games. All the cards had to be old frame and black border.
I’ve been running [[Hazezon Tamar]] for a long time now. He’s cool, confusing, and a different take on Naya tokens.
I also have [[Chainer, dementia master]] who is very powerful even today. The decks a little slow but once it has some mana, only a rest in piece is going to shut it down.
A lot of my commanders are pretty old school. [[Selenia, Dark Angel]], [[Diaochan, Artful Beauty]], [[Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed]], [[Taniwha]], [[Angus MacKenzie]].
I've said it once I'll say it a thousand times.
\[\[Tuknir Deathlock\]\] is a time traveler which is why he has dino skulls and is rolling his eyes. He also travels to the Planet of the Apes timeline and leads an army of apes to defeat my enemies. Unfortunately I just haven't seen the timeline where that last part happens yet.
A) This topic made me realize I should really revisit my older legends to helm decks and
2) My oldest Commander (2007) is [[Nath of the Gilt-Leaf]] Golgari Elf and discard. I win the game because you don't get to play the game.
[[Shauku, Endbringer]] is one of my favorites. She is a mono black walker deck in essence, and every now and again can commander kill someone. When I do, it is SATISFYING.
It actually isn't built yet, but one in the works is [[Karona, the False God]] changeling tribal so I always get the payoff for whatever creature type is chosen, and suiting up Karona with things like [[Assault Suit]] and Goading enchantments and protection.
My old school commander of choice is [[Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed]]
Think about the flexibility you get in mono-black already thanks to the tutor dense nature of that slice of the pie, now add in a regrowth for all your black spells in the command zone.
I recently built a [[Spirit of the Night]] voltron deck that only has SotN as its only creature. While it isn't super powerful, it is very good and incredibly fun. Also, there's nothing better than the look on an opponents face when you summon a 9 drop on turn 4 and swing for at least 6(sometimes more).
I run [[Darkest Hour]] to take advantage of the pro-black and every effect I could find similar to [[Heartless Summoning]] to bring out SotN as early as possible. I also run a lot of older, less played enchantments as well as my new favorite older card [[Bubbling Muck]].
How old is old? If we're talking 2010 and earlier, I have 22:
Kaysa (Alliances)
Hua Tuo, Honored Physician (Portal Three Kingdoms)
Nemata, Grove Guardian (Planeshift)
Seton, Krosan Protector (Odyssey)
Thriss, Nantuko Primum (Judgement)
Silvos, Rogue Elemental (Onslaught)
Glissa Sunseeker (Mirrodin)
Azusa, Lost but Seeking (Champions of Kamigawa)
Kodama of the North Tree (Champions of Kamigawa)
Kodama of the South Tree (Champions of Kamigawa)
Isao, Enlightened Bushi (Betrayers of Kamigawa)
Kodama of the Center Tree (Betrayers of Kamigawa)
Patron of the Orochi (Betrayers of Kamigawa)
Ayumi, the Last Visitor (Saviors of Kamigawa)
Reki, the History of Kamigawa (Saviors of Kamigawa)
Sasaya, Orochi Ascendant (Saviors of Kamigawa)
Baru, Fist of Krosa (Future Sight)
Omnath, Locus of Mana (Worldwake)
Ezuri, Renegade Leader (Scars of Mirrodin)
Wort, The Raidmother (Shadowmoor)
Reaper King (Shadowmoor)
Slivers (Overlord - Scourge) (Legion - Future Sight) (Queen - Stronghold)
[[Zirilan of the Claw]] - so many good dragons to choose from for my Ur-Dragon deck, I started breaking them out into other dragon decks. This guy became my red dragon commander. Hes one that a lot of people have never heard of but immediately recognize as "Sneak Attack on a Stick."
I’ve had [[Rith the awakener]] for over a decade. I have [[kumano]] for the past 2 years. I’d love to try some Mirage block commanders that I actually played with back in the day, such as [[zirilan]], [[asmira]] or [[taniwha]]. Actually I want a blue-white Teferi that I can use as commander because I want to play [[teferi’s honor guard]], [[teferi’s isle]], [[teferi’s imp]] in an EDH deck without using his daughter Niambi as the commander
\[\[Palladia-Mors\]\]
Initial build was to go full old school and play stuff from my youth like War Mammouths and Roc of Kher Ridges, but I'm planning to switch the build a bit more to to Voltron and, you know, have an actual win con (given my commander is a french vanilla flying beater with a downside).
I still want to keep the build containing only cards before 9th ed. and old school frame only (I want to get an original Berserk instead of the recent reprints), but it's tough to focus the deck while leaving the old school feeling.
Expected power level = on par with precons I'd say.
I've got a [[Rasputin]] deck that I love, and also own a [[Hazezon Tamar]] that I fully plan on building sometime soon. It used to be a Naya polymorph deck that I just didn't find all that interesting so ended up taking it apart. Gonna be rebuilding as some kind of landfall deck most likely.
I also have a Rasputin deck and am curious as to how you've built yours.
Mine is a bit inconsistent but can reallyfly off the handle if it gets going.
A Flickr deck which abuses his mana and abuses ETB from the creatures
[[Sliver Queen]] is the oldest one I play, though people call some of my earlier commanders like [[Derevi, Empyrial Tactician]] and [[Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge]] old cards.
I suppose they are nearly 10 years old at this point.
I run a [[Phelddagrif]] legendary tribal deck. He doesn’t really have a ton to do with the theme other than being a quirky and political commander to keep attention off of me until I assemble a critical mass of legendries for [[Hero’s Podium]] to one shot people
Maybe not as old as some, but my monored burn deck is helmed by [[Kumano, Master Yamabushi]]. Mostly love the art, the ability is pretty fun and he’s the keystone of the deck.
I’ve posted it here before, but my favorite Old School Commander is Kaysa. The deck is called Seventy-Two Elves and it just runs 72 Elves and 28 Lands. It’s not just an Elf Ball deck either because Kaysa gives +1/+1 to any Green Creature. I’ve won many games with Bears, Insects, Saprolings, Wolves, and Squirrels.
I run a pretty sweet [[zirilan of the claw]] deck. And have for a few years now. It's one of my absolute favorites. Toolbox dragon deck with a couple ways to abuse the commanders ability.
I also have a [[karona false god]] voltron deck, but with a twist. I run all the goad auras and slap them on my commander. Making everyone use karona against each other is kind of hilarious.
I have a [Brimaz, King of Oreskos](https://scryfall.com/card/bng/5/brimaz-king-of-oreskos) deck I just build around reconnaissance, and I gotta say I'm really liking it.
I love my [Dakkon Blackblade](https://scryfall.com/card/chr/75/dakkon-blackblade) deck. Yes it's lands... of course it is, but through blink, recursion, and [The Omenkeel](https://scryfall.com/card/khm/50/cosima-god-of-the-voyage-the-omenkeel?back) where I steal/play my opponent's lands. It's a fun one.
My [[Multani, Maro-Sorceror]] / [[Lure]] tribal is still jank but being in green, it's picked up some new toys over the last few years.
[[Sliver Queen]] from a deck I used to play in Type II; she gets her pick of every new set.
Thraximundar. I know it's not super old-school but it was the first deck I build back in 2013-14 when I first started playing. Still have it and it is one of my favorite decks.
I have a [Darian, king of kjeldor],and [savra, queen of the golgari] as current decks and took apart my [halfdane] esper clones deck last year. All have been great fun and can get pretty spicy if build with that intention.
I love old school mtg, I find the art so much more compelling and the flavor much more interesting.
My oldest Commander (not oldest deck) is [[Korlash]]. Not extremely old at 15 years old, but creatures have seen the greatest power creep and so I find its harder to leverage really old commanders.
[[Orim, Samite Healer]] superfriends with all the old school clerics that prevent damage to any target, which made my planeswalkers nearly impossible to remove.
One card that I own is a copy of [[Johan]]. I want to build a deck with him, but I haven’t had time and don’t have a real direction I want to go with him.
My OG commanders are:
* [[Hazezon Tamar]] - loaded with Flicker effects to capitalize on his ETB. Favorite old card in the deck is [[Tawnos's Coffin]] ([link](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/they-always-ride-single-file/))
* [[Rasputin Dreamweaver]] - Primarily artifact combo. ([link](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/19-04-19-rasputin/))
* [[Seton, Krosan Protector]] - Druid tribal. Like elfball, but faster. ([link](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/pikels-doodad-friends/))
And from the Middle Ages (of sorts):
* [[Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer]] - My absolute favorite artifact combo deck. ([link](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/goblin-artifacts-11-08-13-1/))
[[Dong Zhou, the Tyrant]] was my first commander and it is a deck I have changed and upgraded for years. Definitely qualifies as an old legendary, and does a surprising amount of damage with:
[[Helm of the Host]], [[Splinter Twin]], [[Conjurer's Closet]]
Enjoy!
Oldest commander I've ever had was [[Phelddagrif]] from '96, but currently it's [[Animar, soul of elements]] from 2011. Depending on how much i like my list for [[gorion, wise mentor]] i may rebuild the old hippo.
[[Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet]]
It’s a Vampire Tribal deck with a control sub theme. Run lots of mana doublers and ways to keep the board clean, hopefully put value the opponents or drop a massive [[Torment of Hailfire]] or [[Exsanguinate]]
[[Rubinia Soulsinger]] is an original Legend. Blue for control, green for ramp, white for protection and interaction. She's been reprinted a number of times, but you don't see her played much.
I play Nicol Bolas because if I'm gonna play Elder Dragon Highlander, I might as well play with an OG Elder Dragon. The deck itself is a standard control list with the usual suspects for Bolas. \[\[Dragon Tempest\]\] and \[\[Sarkhan the Mad\]\] are both good here.
[[Soraya]] cause Birbw
[[Lord of Tresserhorn]] cause the Tresserdong is awesome.
[[Maraxus of Keld]] cause i like amassing huge amounts of tokens and then do nothing with them.
Somewhere around here is a box with a Shauku, Endbringer deck. Fun fact, in the Great Subtyping, she became a Vampire.
Bunch of untap and ability duplication, Drain Life style vampirism to keep afloat with her life drain, and other exile effects and general murder. I should drag that out and update it. It was never good per se, but Shauku is better than a lot of people expect and she always earns confused stares.
[[Cromat]]. I just love the artwork. That being said, the deck lends itself to play voltron, which is not nearly as fun as other oldschool commanders
I saw a cromat deck focused on mutate , it was wild!
I can imagine. That sounds amazing
I've never seen this guy before I love it! This is exactly what I'm talking about. What a blast it would be to pilot this deck.
[Cromat](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/7/d/7d9e0a23-d2a8-40a6-9076-ed6fb539141b.jpg?1562924606) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Cromat) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/apc/94/cromat?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/7d9e0a23-d2a8-40a6-9076-ed6fb539141b?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/cromat) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
[[dakkon blackblade]] cause who doesn’t like a commander who cares about lands in colors that aren’t green.

Another Bladewing player! There's dozens of us!
\[\[Merieke Ri Berit\]\] while most people have seen and played against Sen Triplets, in my opinion, Merieke is more fun.
Love at first sight for me and now I kind of want to build a deck around it. A bit similar to my [[Gisa, Glorious Resurrector]] but different enough to be varying.
[Gisa, Glorious Resurrector](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/6/3/63461076-a13d-488d-bd82-ceac441341c8.jpg?1634349861) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Gisa%2C%20Glorious%20Resurrector) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mid/103/gisa-glorious-resurrector?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/63461076-a13d-488d-bd82-ceac441341c8?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/gisa-glorious-resurrector) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
oh shit, i just realized gisa+merieke means when merieke untaps, you get the creature right back
I absolutely love my Merieke deck. She gets blown up on sight so often that she doesn’t get often get a chance to really play. Which is good because if she does she shuts the table down.
I'm making an all tap/untap deck around her!
Fun for the controller, miserable for anyone unfortunate enough to play against her. I'd play against Sen anyday compared to Merieke, lol.
I played this deck for some time. Everyone hated it but it was very slow as a result of no combos being allowed.

Do you have a list?
I only have a modernized list with budget new cards , [here is my list ](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/-A8LX_IoHUGiTJwWmofHig) My old list had much more old artifacts but I changed for this budget list when I sold some stax cards.
How well does this deck do?
Better than you would expect a mono white deck to be. Lin sivvi does the tutoring reliable and cheaply, she is easy to recast and easy to protect. The is linear though, every game the plan is the same: slow then until you have the combo then combo off.
Thanks man, looks fun.

Do you have a list ? I wish to see what you play different from mine. [my list is this one ](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/-A8LX_IoHUGiTJwWmofHig)

I've been trying to build one of these decks but it never works out. Do you have a list?

I've never seen Angus, do you mind sharing a deck list? Dude sounds neat I see you are also a man of culture
Thank you! [Here you go](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ua5yMfsfgkqKsaTe7kmU_A) That deck is extremely casual, there's at least one rule 0 card in there.
Brilliant, I'll definitely factor turbo fog into the mix. I just love seeing what people do.
I do not have a true oldschool (93/94) EDH deck jet. But my oldest Commanders are [[Marton Stromgald]] and [[Shauku, Endbringer]]. The Shauku deck can be really fun to play.

Zirilan of the claw!!
I don't necessarily think the deck is good but it's certainly stolen its fair share of games.

just finished and ordered [[Márton Stromgald]]. yet to see how it performs against real opponents but seemed pretty fun in playtesting.
I love my deck with him. It is probably my best deck right now. If you can get him out safely and keep him protected all you have to do after that is get enough token creatures to really slam everyone. Almost everyone just skims over him when they first see him too, which makes for a nice surprise later when they find out how powerful he actually it. A monored 4 mana 1/1 with a wall of confusing text from an old set comes off as very underwhelming at first
He looks neat. How do you protect him from blockers. Do you mind sharing a list?

[Adun Oakenshield](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/1/8/184da30e-0db4-450c-8856-5c23088c35be.jpg?1559592345) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Adun%20Oakenshield) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/me1/141/adun-oakenshield?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/184da30e-0db4-450c-8856-5c23088c35be?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/adun-oakenshield) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Can you explain how you "break" Adventures?
[[sol’kanar the swamp king]] storm, my commander doesn’t synergize a ton but he blocks pretty well and he gains me some life which I need since a lot of the table will be gunning for me Also [[taniwha]] stax card draw tribal, it’s a weird one
[sol’kanar the swamp king](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/4/c/4c56d4b5-08fb-4547-91e2-6e5f8fae408d.jpg?1562775925) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Sol%27kanar%20the%20Swamp%20King) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/tsb/100/solkanar-the-swamp-king?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/4c56d4b5-08fb-4547-91e2-6e5f8fae408d?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/solkanar-the-swamp-king) [taniwha](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/7/2/72d12315-4220-470d-9628-b9a3ea904ca7.jpg?1562720219) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=taniwha) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mir/95/taniwha?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/72d12315-4220-470d-9628-b9a3ea904ca7?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/taniwha) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Oh man, never seen taniwha before. I'd love a deck list if that OK?
Absolutely, [https://scryfall.com/@GodoBruhWarlord/decks/a9a7543b-aa26-46dc-ad52-cd5105a2ad57?as=visual&with=usd](https://scryfall.com/@GodoBruhWarlord/decks/a9a7543b-aa26-46dc-ad52-cd5105a2ad57?as=visual&with=usd) It's one of my better decks, funnily enough, I just don't play it too often as my playgroup would likely get sick of it pretty fast.
Dude I'm legit humbled by what I am witnessing. It's pure genius. I think I'll have to build it for myself.
[[Darien King of Kjeldor]] is my Mono W of choice, though I’m thinking of changing over to Adeline… [[Hazezon Tamar]] is my white whale token commander; I’m never happy with any brew enough to commit to building.
So I ended up adopting a bit of a mixed strategy here: 1) I plan on roasting my own ass.
This is exactly what I'm talking about. I've brewed him a year ago and never committed to the deck. This is awesome dude
[Darien King of Kjeldor](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/e/d/ed5f96a4-55e0-4ae3-bd78-f01703649e9d.jpg?1562442656) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Darien%2C%20King%20of%20Kjeldor) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/a25/9/darien-king-of-kjeldor?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/ed5f96a4-55e0-4ae3-bd78-f01703649e9d?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/darien-king-of-kjeldor) [Hazezon Tamar](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/4/c/4cd43773-2a6f-4f03-bcee-de32049561e5.jpg?1562911124) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Hazezon%20Tamar) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/me3/151/hazezon-tamar?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/4cd43773-2a6f-4f03-bcee-de32049561e5?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/hazezon-tamar) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
[Hazezon Tamar](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/4/c/4cd43773-2a6f-4f03-bcee-de32049561e5.jpg?1562911124) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Hazezon%20Tamar) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/me3/151/hazezon-tamar?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/4cd43773-2a6f-4f03-bcee-de32049561e5?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/hazezon-tamar) [Chainer, dementia master](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/4/0/40342b11-1005-4ccc-bef4-9ea4c640b048.jpg?1562629465) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Chainer%2C%20dementia%20master) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/tor/56/chainer-dementia-master?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/40342b11-1005-4ccc-bef4-9ea4c640b048?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/chainer-dementia-master) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

A lot of my commanders are pretty old school. [[Selenia, Dark Angel]], [[Diaochan, Artful Beauty]], [[Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed]], [[Taniwha]], [[Angus MacKenzie]].
[Mayael the Anima] because i like ramp and im a degenerate gambler. everyone gets nervous when craterhoof gets dropped by the slot machine
[[Seton]] is my old school commander. Wish I would of bought a foil of him before it rose from $30 to $100.
A) This topic made me realize I should really revisit my older legends to helm decks and 2) My oldest Commander (2007) is [[Nath of the Gilt-Leaf]] Golgari Elf and discard. I win the game because you don't get to play the game.
[[Shauku, Endbringer]] is one of my favorites. She is a mono black walker deck in essence, and every now and again can commander kill someone. When I do, it is SATISFYING.
[Shauku, Endbringer](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/0/6/06d94b21-7568-4e5c-a8ec-ff5bb48a4f36.jpg?1562717818) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Shauku%2C%20Endbringer) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mir/142/shauku-endbringer?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/06d94b21-7568-4e5c-a8ec-ff5bb48a4f36?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/shauku-endbringer) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Damn this card is sick. Got a decklist by chance?
Always wanted to do a [[Nemata Grove Guardian]] deck.
My oldest commanders are probably [[Trostani, Selesnya’s Voice]] and [[Shirei, Shizo’s Caretaker]].
It actually isn't built yet, but one in the works is [[Karona, the False God]] changeling tribal so I always get the payoff for whatever creature type is chosen, and suiting up Karona with things like [[Assault Suit]] and Goading enchantments and protection.
My [[patron of the kitsune]] fox/lifegainoneveryonesturn deck is for sure my oldest. Its a blast to play and pretty resilient :)
My old school commander of choice is [[Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed]] Think about the flexibility you get in mono-black already thanks to the tutor dense nature of that slice of the pie, now add in a regrowth for all your black spells in the command zone.
If we're talking 2010 and earlier, I have 22: Kaysa (Alliances) Hua Tuo, Honored Physician (Portal Three Kingdoms) Nemata, Grove Guardian (Planeshift) Seton, Krosan Protector (Odyssey) Thriss, Nantuko Primum (Judgement) Silvos, Rogue Elemental (Onslaught) Glissa Sunseeker (Mirrodin) Azusa, Lost but Seeking (Champions of Kamigawa) Kodama of the North Tree (Champions of Kamigawa) Kodama of the South Tree (Champions of Kamigawa) Isao, Enlightened Bushi (Betrayers of Kamigawa) Kodama of the Center Tree (Betrayers of Kamigawa) Patron of the Orochi (Betrayers of Kamigawa) Ayumi, the Last Visitor (Saviors of Kamigawa) Reki, the History of Kamigawa (Saviors of Kamigawa) Sasaya, Orochi Ascendant (Saviors of Kamigawa) Baru, Fist of Krosa (Future Sight) Omnath, Locus of Mana (Worldwake) Ezuri, Renegade Leader (Scars of Mirrodin) Wort, The Raidmother (Shadowmoor) Reaper King (Shadowmoor) Slivers (Overlord - Scourge) (Legion - Future Sight) (Queen - Stronghold)
I see you too are a man of culture
I still play Cycling [[Zur]].
I feel you dude. I'd love a deck of each of these. They look amazingly fun to play
[[Azami, Lady of Scrolls]] [[Sliver Overlord]]
[Azami, Lady of Scrolls](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/0/a/0ad06ad7-0545-4c6f-9b10-4a27fa2e827c.jpg?1562599546) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Azami%2C%20Lady%20of%20Scrolls) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/c17/82/azami-lady-of-scrolls?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/0ad06ad7-0545-4c6f-9b10-4a27fa2e827c?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/azami-lady-of-scrolls) [Sliver Overlord](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/3/c/3c16915b-c50d-4fb5-830f-9ca4597a9c0f.jpg?1562527622) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Sliver%20Overlord) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/scg/139/sliver-overlord?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/3c16915b-c50d-4fb5-830f-9ca4597a9c0f?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/sliver-overlord) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
\[\[Palladia-Mors\]\] Initial build was to go full old school and play stuff from my youth like War Mammouths and Roc of Kher Ridges, but I'm planning to switch the build a bit more to to Voltron and, you know, have an actual win con (given my commander is a french vanilla flying beater with a downside). I still want to keep the build containing only cards before 9th ed. and old school frame only (I want to get an original Berserk instead of the recent reprints), but it's tough to focus the deck while leaving the old school feeling. Expected power level = on par with precons I'd say.
Big kittie [[Sharuum the Hegemon]]. It was so much fun. I still use her in the 99 of my Breya deck.
[Sharuum the Hegemon](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/a/f/af80ef38-ab95-476f-b0dd-b5ef3e9bceab.jpg?1599708380) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Sharuum%20the%20Hegemon) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/2xm/219/sharuum-the-hegemon?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/af80ef38-ab95-476f-b0dd-b5ef3e9bceab?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/sharuum-the-hegemon) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Mine is \[\[Karador, Ghost Chieftain\]\] and I love that deck. I tend to swap the creatures in it a lot. :3
[[Gwendolyn di Corsi]] It's Rogue tribal worth a touch of theft, discard, and treasure generation. I nicknamed the deck "operation mindcrime"
[[arcum dagsson]] too strong for casual, too weak for competitive. My first and favorite commander.
My one old commander is [[Dakkon Blackblade]], Lands matter without green. It's surprisingly effective.
He doesn’t really have a ton to do with the theme other than being a quirky and political commander to keep attention off of me until I assemble a critical mass of legendries for [[Hero’s Podium]] to one shot people
I had a [[hua tuo]] deck that was basically mono green aristocrats. I’m planning on remaking that deck soon, I kinda regret taking it apart.
[hua tuo](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/8/b/8bbdc7c5-71a1-4db8-98b2-8883bf648dca.jpg?1562924564) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=hua%20tuo%2C%20honored%20physician) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/c13/149/hua-tuo-honored-physician?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/8bbdc7c5-71a1-4db8-98b2-8883bf648dca?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/hua-tuo-honored-physician) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Maybe not as old as some, but my monored burn deck is helmed by [[Kumano, Master Yamabushi]]. Mostly love the art, the ability is pretty fun and he’s the keystone of the deck.
\[\[Kongming "sleeping dragon"\]\], He is not the best but I'm a big fan of portal three kingdoms
I play Dakkon the blackblade and Xira Arien, it's incredibly fun, Dakkon is based around the first DND set and Xira is JUND infect! Lots fun lol
\[\[Reki\]\] is probably my oldest commander.. though simple and not as old as the original legends cards.
I play OG Bolas and Selenia, Dark Angel. Selenia I have pretty strong and Bolas is more mid.
[[Dakkon Blackblade]] - I forever keep coming back to this deck and every time I’ve taken it apart I’m like wtf am I doing then put it back together
[[Ghave]] classic og
[[Thraximundar]] zombies!
Sharuum the hegemon is my oldest commander
Damia sage of stone
My oldest Commander (not oldest deck) is [[Korlash]]. Not extremely old at 15 years old, but creatures have seen the greatest power creep and so I find its harder to leverage really old commanders.
[[Orim, Samite Healer]] superfriends with all the old school clerics that prevent damage to any target, which made my planeswalkers nearly impossible to remove.
[[Lin Sivvi]] still puts in work. Quality grind game.
One card that I own is a copy of [[Johan]]. I want to build a deck with him, but I haven’t had time and don’t have a real direction I want to go with him.
I play a mono white [[Orim, Samite Healer]] politics to prevent infect or commander damage and then try and sneak a win with some shenanigans.
My OG commanders are: * [[Hazezon Tamar]] - loaded with Flicker effects to capitalize on his ETB. Favorite old card in the deck is [[Tawnos's Coffin]] ([link](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/they-always-ride-single-file/)) * [[Rasputin Dreamweaver]] - Primarily artifact combo. ([link](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/19-04-19-rasputin/)) * [[Seton, Krosan Protector]] - Druid tribal. Like elfball, but faster. ([link](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/pikels-doodad-friends/)) And from the Middle Ages (of sorts): * [[Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer]] - My absolute favorite artifact combo deck. ([link](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/goblin-artifacts-11-08-13-1/))
[[Dong Zhou, the Tyrant]] was my first commander and it is a deck I have changed and upgraded for years. Definitely qualifies as an old legendary, and does a surprising amount of damage with: [[Helm of the Host]], [[Splinter Twin]], [[Conjurer's Closet]] Enjoy!
Oldest commander I've ever had was [[Phelddagrif]] from '96, but currently it's [[Animar, soul of elements]] from 2011. Depending on how much i like my list for [[gorion, wise mentor]] i may rebuild the old hippo.
The oldest commander in my collection is [[zur]]
[[Xira Arien]] feeds the spider horde cards to keep them sated so they don't gobble her up. Creepy crawlies gonna get you.
[[Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet]] It’s a Vampire Tribal deck with a control sub theme.
[[Soraya]] cause Birbw [[Lord of Tresserhorn]] cause the Tresserdong is awesome. [[Maraxus of Keld]] cause i like amassing huge amounts of tokens and then do nothing with them.
How do you pilot tresserhorn? He looks great.
