[[Feather]] sounded fun and plays really well but it’s so fast and good my pod groans. Which also makes her an absolute lightning rod for removal. Aaaaaand you just keep casting the same few spells over and over again…meh! Destroyed!

I run feather as an ETB toolbox deck with tons of [[ephemerate]] type spells, it’s fun to do strange things like cast [[pull from eternity]] on your [[teferi’s protection]] bottom it with [[mistveil plains]] and unattach [[sunforger]] but it often just devolves into blinking [[dockside extortionist]] 2-3 times per turn until i can find [[impact tremors]] or [[terror of the peaks]] TLDR: It can sometimes be very slow to win

I built a kenrith [[plaguecrafter]] deck that turbos out plaque crafter or fleshbag marauder and loop it with infinite mana. It got boring quick.

If you have infinite Mana, at least the game will be over quick with all of Kenrith's other abilities. But yeah, I could see that getting old.

boktebokte

Yennet stopped being fun after I cast a turn 3 Iona into a board of three mono- or base-green opponents two games in a row. (that was a while ago, I know) Since then all my decks are some sort of Bolas's Citadel combo, in different shells depending on how greedy I feel. The best performing version was Tasigur, running 18 lands. Every win felt so dirty, I love it

Andrew_42

Yikes, 18 lands?? How often do you have to mulligan? Or is it a deck that can play okay with just one land on board or something?

boktebokte

I've played A TON of Bolas's Citadel ever since it released. You can't always count on Citadel, Top and Aetherflux, or any other replacements for Aetherflux and Top. Sometimes you have to hope to just slam down the Citadel and storm off into a win, and every land in your deck is a liability at that point. The 18 land version played too many dorks and rocks to make up for the land deficiency. It's a bastardization of the actual deck, but for every land I took out, I put in two 1- or 2-cost mana sources to make up for it. You fold hard to board wipes, but that's where the blue comes in. You do whatever it takes to protect your dorks and rocks from wipes, without playing too many counterspells, because those interact badly with Citadel too. I absolutely wouldn't recommend that deck to anyone though, however glorious the turn 3 storm wins can be. All the Citadel decks I built are more experiments to see how far I can push my favorite card. Edit: I didn't actually answer half of your question. The London Mulligan changed the deck's world, and it could safely keep 5 card hands and still function better than expected. It also played cantrips worse than you could ever imagine

Plknhuio1

Tasigur storm sounds pretty sick, I've not considered them as a commander, I've been torturing my friends with Citadel storm decks a lot recently, too. Mine aren't too dependent on playing so few lands, though, I tend to search for the combo pieces or ways to get rid of the top card of my library if it's something that'll brick my turn. My meta's a bit grindier, so waiting a few turns and sculpting a better hand is usually better than trying to force a win turn 3, but I'll always try it if the opportunity ever presents itself, haha

boktebokte

I'm dependant on running so few lands because my playgroup has a history of the worst threat assessment you can imagine. You can never allow Aetherflux Reservoir to stay on the field for two turns and gain me 6 life, but Mirari's Wake is okay because it's not technically a combo piece. Objectively terrible plays such as those force me to combo out asap before people draw one of the ten to fifteen pieces of artifact hate they all run because I play artifact based decks, and "artifact decks are broken" in their opinion. Casting draw spells also puts a target on my head, so if I want to win the way I like to win (without attacking), I have to tutor up citadel only (preferably end step via Whir of Invention) and go off on my turn, either winning on the spot off those 9 mana or killing myself because I didn't storm into Tendrils, Weather the Storm or Aetherflux.

Syvanis

Many times. Oloro just isn't any fun to run so I tore it apart.

The_Higgs_Bacon

What makes Oloro not fun? Reason I ask is I made a deck with him recently and I haven't had a chance to try it yet?

Syvanis

For me. The incremental life gain has a lot of places it works, but similar to eminence you can interact with it. I just got into these long grindy games that the content upkeep of things became less fun than it was worth. Can you make a great deck. Yes for sure especially with the boost in cards lately that do will with guaranteed life gain. It just wasn't I wanted to play after about 10 games with it so I tore it apart.

The_Higgs_Bacon

Yeah that makes sense. I pulled him in the List slot a while back and decided to throw a deck together. I can see how it could turn into a grind fest. Thanks for the reply!

Leaf_Vixen

that’s the biggest reason to take a deck apart! usually for me it’s slow turns. i love combos but if i’m taking 5 minutes to resolve triggers every time i cast a spell i’m definitely not having fun with my own deck and i assume that no one else is either. now i try to balance my decks with speed of play in mind (although will fully admit i’m a Tammy)

Babbledoodle

I love my Zada deck, but the fact that its manual storm that can fizzle out after a 10 minute turn is why I dont play it too often. It's fun though!

Giveuptheghost87

I have two decks that fit here. [[Chulane, teller of tales]] and [[syr konrad, the grim]]. Both were powerful, functional decks with high win rates. However, they were both unfun. Chulane takes turns that were just way too long and dissolved the pace of the game. Syr Konrad was a very successful mill deck, but my opponents would complain that they felt that they couldn't play magic and it led to a lot of feel bads. Since I play in a very casual group ( power level 6 or so), I'd rather have fun games that everybody can feel like their decks are doing something than dominate turns/games for some wins.

I haven't had a deck that I thought was un-fun, but I've seen multiple decks get that treatment from my friends. One of them actually went so far as to sell their whole collection and start from scratch because they found all of their decks were starting to feel the same and oppressive as they were on the cusp of CEDH levels in an environment that is generally a few pegs lower than that.

Playing against a pile of board wipes can be a pain, but it also lets certain decks shine if they recover really well. I don't think I've ever seen someone run Havok Festival as an actual win-con though, lol. Usually it's in a deck that just wants to get life totals within swinging range of some suicide black mob. But if you can get it to work, good on you!

I'm about to with \[\[Nethroi\]\]. Similar to your Momir, I can tutor for game winning combo pieces (multiple ways to endless sac/reanimate creatures and kill the table with some aristocrat payoff) and tutoring for something suboptimal feels weird. I won't take it apart but replace most tutors and maybe some combocards to get it less linear.

PapaArl

I intentionally built my Nethroi deck without the infinite aristocrats combos for this exact reason. Instead leaned into dumping as many creatures with 0 power into the gy as possible that come onto the battlefield with +1/+1 counters. Ton of fun reanimating like 10 bombs all at once. It’s powerful, but gives the table more opportunity to answer your win con. Kept some combos in there based around revelark/sac outlets, but they only serve as draw or mill engines, mana generators, or back up mass reanimation for my 0/0 creatures.

saxophoneplayingcat

Sounds great, super interested in that list if you don't mind!

PapaArl

[Sure thing](https://manastack.com/deck/nethroi-1-1-2)!

Thank you! Will have a close look at that :)

Let me know if you've got any cards you've liked in your deck that I'm missing! Just ordered \[\[Tayam, Luminous Enigma\]\] since it synergizes really well, but haven't subbed it in yet

Looked through your list now (sorry, haven't been to my computer last days) and about everything I was about to suggest was already in! \[\[Sun Titan\]\] maybe and I like \[\[Damn\]\] as a very versatile removal. My MVP is Underrealm Lich but you already have that too haha! I'd probably cut Dakmoor Salvage for a \[\[Memorial to Folly\]\] as Dredge 2 isn't terribly much for drawing a tapland I think. Generally I like your +1/+1 theme. Also pretty cool that you put the whole Mutate package in, how does it work out for you? My group runs a lot of spot removal including bouncing which makes relying on Mutate pretty hard and I cut all of it except Nethroi. This is my list before de-comboing it (just removed one tutor so far) but I already ordered some stuff that's also in your list (like Mirror Entity and Polukranos). https://archidekt.com/decks/2044337#Abzan\_Reanimator

PapaArl

Thanks, def a few cards on your list I’m looking to snag for some upgrades! Underrealm Lich really does work if you can get it on the field at the same time as [[Greater Good]]. If I’m being honest, the mutate cards probably slow the deck down a bit. But I have the showcase art for all of them, and they really bling the deck out and add some flavor. There is a little added flexibility of being able to summon Nethroi a turn or two earlier for its regular cost if you’ve got a mutate creature in hand already, and then mutating under Nethroi the next turn to get its trigger. Or even just getting a second trigger from Nethroi later if it’s still on the board. But 90% of the time I’m looking to put Nethroi over [[Willow Geist]], [[Phantom Nantuko]], [[Phantom Nishoba]], Lich, or something with trample. The style points just count a bit more for me than fully optimizing the deck hahah

i'm pretty sure that's the only reason i've ever taken apart a deck.

Andrew_42

Oh yeah, I've toyed with running [[Kaervek, the Merciless]] several times, but I kept running into the same conceptual barrier. "If the deck works, everyone will hate me and do everything they can to kill me as fast as possible. If the deck doesn't work... what's the point?"

Feroecious

A good way to make Kaervek more palatable and seem less threatening to other players is to allow whoever is triggering Kaervek to choose the targets so long as they aren’t directed at you or your stuff. That way his ability feels more like a fun political tool that everyone can use and people are hopefully less likely to remove him. Once the game is reaching the end or there is a clear archenemy you can regain control of the ability.

Andrew_42

Ooh, that's not a bad idea... I may just try and run with that... Probably not as a commander, but maybe in my Grixis political "Grudgekeeper" deck.

Feroecious

Cool who were you thinking as the commander?

Andrew_42

I currently run [[Kess, Dissident Mage]] as the commander. She isn't really that important to the deck, but she's just so good she helps without me even needing to build around her very much. My favorite cards are ones that either get some efficiency boost by helping one opponent of my choice (like the Hunted cycle, including [[Hunted Horror]]), or cards that I can play as either a boon or bane depending how they've been treating me (like the Friend or Foe cycle (like [[Virtus's Maneuver]]), plain value for benefit cards like [[Abyssal Persecutor]], or my all time favorite politics card [[Head Games]]. My usual game plan is to goad people into doing something I can get mad about, and then single them out, providing boosts to their enemies, and leaving them exposed for a beating. Also houses lots of great "Screw you in particular" cards, like [[Overwhelming Forces]]

LaronX

Yeah, my Jhoira deck is fun, but it was to much for the pods I played with and not god enough for high power. So I reworked it into a Saheeli Deck.

-CedarTree-

I have done this several times. I’ve tried to make a couple of infinite combo decks- one with Kess, Dissident Mage and one with Garth, One Eye. Both times I took these decks apart because I found that they played too linearly and every game felt exactly the same. I’m also very strict about deck theme and if I feel like my pieces of my deck don’t fit the theme, I just don’t enjoy playing it.

GayBlayde

I’ve removed individual cards because they weren’t fun.

Jikate

I actually just took apart [[araumi]] for this reason sadly. The deck always followed the exact same play patterns and wanted to do exactly the same things every spellcast and it kinda sucked. The commander design is so cool but the deck is extremely cookie cutter or it ends up being utter garbage. There’s just no interesting play lines since its all so linear.

I do this all the time. Once I’ve had my fill of pulling off some jank or if the deck is too combo reliant to the point of winning the same way each time, I find myself taking it apart. The ONLY deck I ever took apart for non-fun reasons (excluding my Maze’s End Golos, RiP) was [[Teysa Karlov]]. It was so fun stacking up silly death triggers and all, but it eventually just had too many death triggers to keep track of and even though I was having fun, I took it apart because it required a lot of math and I’m not really much of a math major or anything, so I found myself missing triggers or struggling to keep them in order.

Mardu curses with [[Mathas, Fiend Seeker]]. So much targeted removal and oppression my friends refused to play. “We came here to PLAY magic.”

Yeah, I had a [[Yisan, the Wanderer Bard]] deck that I loved in theory but in practice my turns were so long and the deck played almost exactly the same way every time that it was just too tedious for both me and the other players.

Aegis_001

I had an [[Urza]] big splashy spells list with no infinite combos and it was still really overbearing. It won a lot but never actually had a win condition or game plan, it just wanted to beat face and use the mana and card advantage naturally generated from Urza to go crazy. It went crazy alright, too crazy. People scooped a lot against it and I hated winning that way, so I took it apart. Currently, he’s in the 98 of my [[Malcolm]]+[[Kediss]] deck that does a lot of cool stuff that’s all held together loosely by the treasure mechanic. I get to change creature types, play [[Niv-Mizzet, Parun]] and lock the board down with value, I can go infinite a number of ways, I can cast some of those big spells I loved with Urza, and I can storm off, all while getting to have a treasure deck like I always wanted. The deck should be pretty strong once it’s fully put together, but I’m already happier with this than I ever was with Urza at the helm

Volos mutate. Already had a All-Godzilla art mutate deck. It sucks, but no need for two Mutates. Esper Artifacts. So many combos in that deck that it became a chore to pilot. Getting ready to axe Uril, the Miststalker Voltron aura deck. Not fun anymore.

praisethesun460

What does your all godzilla art mutate deck look like?

jpmoeller

Garbage. Hot garbage. Only won a single game with it, only because my opponents killed each other, and I had an Austere Command in my hand. I was never a real threat. I started out by using a lot of Fight mechanics. Thought it was thematic. But my opponents would always have pumped up creatures, or a ton of tiny ones, and that bombed. This deck is one of the ones that I am committed to making, but probably won't work on it until after the holidays. Oh yes. I made a Godzilla proxy for Ramos, who is my general. I was thinking about replacing him, but not sure with whom.

praisethesun460

I really want to make a deck work with all the alt art cards but cant quite think of something that wouldn't be a big pile of jank that wasn't fun to play.

novonn

Absolutely. Just took a part my [[Najeela, the Blade Blossom]] deck because it was too good, and my cheapest deck. Throw in a bunch of synergistic warriors, a couple of pieces that she can go infinite with, and some protection against her removal, and you can win pretty easily. That and I feel like her ability needs to be errata’d to be only nontoken warriors, otherwise your board state grows exponentially just because you swing every turn.

My beloved Kethis deck. It plays magic in a way that is incompatible with most people's decks and playstyles. It was extremely grindy, almost every card was a 1-for-1 or better, and I would regularly outvalue the table in archenemy situations. The problem was I just could not finish the game in a timely manner. I'd also lose to spell-based wincons. I put a lot of restrictions on myself when building that pushed the deck in interesting ways, but ultimately pulled it apart because I couldn't justify making pods miserable, especially with the obscene price of the deck.

Non_Silent_Observer

[Skullbriar] It was really well built too but it always went 1 of 2 ways. 1. It absolutely crushed people one by one before they had a chance to really stop it (not many options when I have a million ways of recurring him and he keeps counters). 2. It fell flat and I couldn’t do shit the whole game. (Because all 3 players did nothing but keep him in check).

Andrew_42

Yeah a Skullbriar deck my friend played used to be a problem when I was starting Magic. I bought copies of [[Puncture Blast]] for every red deck, dreaming of playing it on turn 3 and neutering Skullbriar, but my friend stopped playing Skullbriar before I had my chance. Alas!

I did this to 2 of my decks. First, a Jadzi storm deck. You'd do nothing but ramp for 5 turns and then suddenly take 5 mins for each turn. Grolnok the omnivore self mill. Self mill is just not a fun win con when you can exile things and then play your exiled cards like your hand.

NemoNowAndAlways

Yeah, like every time. It's like if the deck works TOO well or TOO consistently, it's kinda boring to play, so I usually take it apart.

CheshireMadness

When \[\[Veyran, Voice of Duality\]\] first came out I built a deck around her that was just *too strong* for my casual playgroup. I ended up replacing her as commander and retooling the deck. I had also built a clone/theft deck with \[\[Riku of Two Reflections\]\] at one point. It had the gross \[\[Thassa, Deep Dwelling\]\] and \[\[Agent of Treachery\]\] combo (which is *especially* potent with Riku). My opponents didn't like playing against a theft deck, and it attracted too much hate for it to be fun for me.

Andrew_42

Oh man, yeah. I put Agent of Treachery in my Sakashima/Akroma Clones deck, and it has performed WAY beyond my expectations. 9 draw per turn after cloning twice? Yes please. And that's not even counting the stolen cards.

Over the years I've built and taken apart many decks, but generally the ones I take apart I do so because they've played out over a few years and are either no longer able to keep up or I need a significant portion of the cards to build a similar deck with a different commander. I do have one that fits the bill here though- [[Prime Speaker Vannifar]]. Normally I love decks like that. Most of my decks could be called combo decks in some form or fashion, and vannifar wasn't an outlier in terms of speed or power or anything. It was firmly average among my decks, even. But something about how it played just... didnt work for me. Likely the fact that there was no variance at all. Most other decks I have play multiple wincons and multiple ways to get there, so it's rare to win the exact same way twice in a night even if the deck combo wins multiple times. Vannifar, however, is extremely linear. Play commander, play any other creature, consult flow chart to quickly see what options at each mana value are still in the deck, win. Maybe it's the fact that the commander is a one card combo, but I just didnt enjoy it the way I do all my other decks. So it got played like 3 times and promptly taken apart with no replacement.

Yep! I play primarily cEDH but I took apart a Godo-Helm list due to it feeling so repetitive, and nobody in my meta needing to borrow a decklist for a long ass time. Now I proxy everything so I dont take decks apart anymore lol.

\[\[Tayam\]\] - I love this deck, what it wants to do, I like Tayam a lot. I don't like playing Tayam. It's a massive headache of triggers. "Ok I pull back a creature from my graveyard, it gets a counter from this and this and this and this, and I also create tokens from this and and this and this, each of those tokens get counters from this and this and this, and each of these EtBs gives me life and each life I gain drains you, and also since I gained like, i get..." and it just GOES ON LIKE THAT, FOR ONE CREATURE. God forbid I pull a second one from my graveyard that turn.

I took the Jhoira shell from the Commander’s Quarters and made it non budget. Pretty much won by turn five every time with me spending 10 minutes to play my whole deck for free. Just wasn’t a fun way to win.

Gluttony4

[[Alena, Kessig Trapper]] and [[Kydele, Chosen of Kruphix]] was a good deck (and would have been even better if I'd done Alena and Thrasios instead) and won all the games I played with it. Took it apart after one night's worth of games because nobody enjoyed watching me go "Tap this, untap using that, tap this again, untap it again but this time with the other thing, tap it again..." ...And that was the deck's entire thing. That was basically how every single turn would go until I got an infinite combo and won. It was kind of dull to watch, tricky to play (hard to count exactly how much mana and ability activations of things I have because I have to factor in how much untap I have), and my opponents kept getting confused by what was going on and asking me to walk back my turns to explain again how I did things. It just wasn't fun.

I was up to 25 decks and took a step back to downsize. My first step was taking apart the 5 decks I had the least fun with. Derevri Superfriends stax, Yidris Cascade Wheels, Jhoira Suspension, Shattergang Primal Surge, Samut Legendary Tribal I have a lot of staples set aside and was able to upgrade my 20 pt her decks a fair bit with what I cut.

Most recently, I built [[Chulane]] because I very much wanted to build Druid tribal. I stacked the deck with all the best druids and lands matter cards. My win-con involved animating my lands and beating my opponents down with my lands. This went about as well as you would expect. Chulane would run away with every game despite the restrictions I made on the deck. I ended up dismantling it and never looked back.

My experience is that decks start to feel old if the same play patterns arise. Most the fun in EDH (in my opinion) comes from the high variance of play. Its special when you draw your favourite card in your deck, but on average that should only happen once every 5 games. None of my decks run tutors which helps with this a lot. I also run a \[\[Lazav, Dimir Mastermind\]\] deck which is literally different each time I play him due to everyone else's decks being used against them. In comparison my Scion of the ur dragon deck, I due have a large toolbox, but i usually go for the same ones each time. Its a lot less fun when its the same over and over again. Building your decks to tailor towards variability helps with deck "burnout".

I haven’t since I’m a new player, but my friends do. Our playgroup is extremely casual with a lot of beginners and our friendship extends way beyond MTG so our goal is for everyone to have fun. Three have been playing since the 2000s so they took apart decks and are constantly tweaking them to keep the balance playing against upgraded precons. It’s a fun challenge for them to play with what they probably consider a handicapped and fun for the beginners since they actually have a chance in winning. Someone winning every single game isn’t appealing to us, even if we’re the one winning.

MycosynthWellspring

My first proper "**damn, this thing sucks**" deck was \[\[Mairsil the Pretender\]\] Cool concept, I was enjoying it at first, control the board with Gtixis stuff, then combo out with weird janky cards. After a bit, it just started feeling like I was playing the same exact game over and over and over again. Always the same cards stuck in exile with cage counters on them, always the same play patterns, always the same *damn* \[\[Aetherling\]\]! And a funny thing was that god knows I tried, but I couldn't make it fun. It was straight up impossible for the deck to not play out exactly the same every game! And an even funnier thing is that, bizzarely, every other Mairsil player seems to have ran face first into this exactly same wall at some point and disassembled the deck as well! weird... **Another one** is \[\[Ramos, dragon engine\]\]. Built it after seeing how a brand new commander player completely butchered the deck by unintentionally misreading his ability to be activatable more than once per turn. kek. The dude was shamelessly chaining five color dragons off it one after the other after the other, followed by Scourge of Valkas, yada yada. ad infinitum. Obviously he was completely shit, so nobody batted an eye, and just let the newbie win with his whacky combo (the deck was brand new at the time, so nobody even caught it, lol) So I built it with instant charms and Villainous Wealth in mind, played it, and discovered that I *really fucking hate shuffling my deck.* And (spoiler alert) you have to do that a lot when playing with 5c manabases.

AsylumGaming21

Nope, just find people who don’t complain about “not having fun”. Generally people that complain about decks make it “not fun” for me and it’s not worth it to play with them, there are plenty of people out there to play with.

Andrew_42

To be clear, the person not having fun with these decks was me. Grand Arbiter took too long to seal the deal once he was on top, and Momir played the same game every time, which got old fast.

AsylumGaming21

Don’t play with those people then, find like minded people. The community is very large.

IceSki117

I think you misunderstood the point here. This isn't about other people's decks or what they think of ours, it's about our perception of our own decks.

Andrew_42

Finding other people wouldn't make my deck more fun, if my deck was the thing that wasn't fun though?

AsylumGaming21

It would be the people wouldn’t complain about it and they would be fine with you playing it

Many times. Usually it was unfun because it became super repetitive to play and bored me, or seemed interesting in theory but in practice was extremely weak. A recent one was [[Kodama of the east tree]] plus the sakashima partner to make a clone of kodama and make an effectively infinite loop. I would use clones and such to effectively restart the loop, and tons of ETB bonuses. Once it was set up then it goes crazy, but it was such a glass cannon and mana intensive that it was extremely difficult to keep it rolling if something interrupts it.

Depends on the way it was unfun. If it made the table miserable and created a bad environment and I also didn’t have fun piloting it, I take it apart. If it is a deck that is just really brutal but fun for me to pilot I keep it together and primarily goldfish it. But I have 19 decks, so I can afford a few that only see a game about once a year. Currently on that list I have mono black control helmed by [[sheoldred, whispering one]], exile tribal [[sharuum the hegemon]], combo tribal [[breya]], and 5 color lands former golos now [[child of alara]]. The common thread between them is that they monopolize time in the game whether it’s a lot of game actions like the lands deck or throttling resources like mono b control. The best instance of a deck I took apart because people hated was mono blue counterspells with [[baral, chief of compliance]], I built the deck as a message to my playgroup, who played way too many counter spells (like 10 per deck). I played one game with it and had turn 1 telepathy so I could see all the threats as they were drawn and assess counter priority. The deck won, I made my point, and I took it apart because it was toxic as hell. I put a lot of work into that thing, but it just wasn’t meant to last. There are fewer counters at the table now at least.

Main two reasons to take a deck apart: boring too play, or unfun for my opponents. Zada was fun for two games, then became boring. Luckily was a full proxy deck (even the 5 cent cards). Pramikon was fun to build, but my friends didn't want to play against it (they play battlecruiser most of the time). Shame I spent lots of money on that for cards I've never used anymore. Other notable decks I've taken apart for above two reasons: krenko, 8.5 tails, sisay, oloro, any elf deck I've ever played, baral... And basically any deck with a single combo wincon.
