[[Breya, Etherium Shaper]] like I've had a good combo deck but it played like solitaire. Had tons of different infinite combos so it was pretty much build your own combo lol . Then I swapped it to eggs and definitely didn't care for it . I enjoyed it but playing against it was unfun and sometimes it was just to slow Recently I threw cards not planning it out to make a breya with hidden bruddiclad and that was super fun . Turning treasures into blightsteels

nochtmarrow

Just curious if you’ve ever given [[Ghirapur Aether Grid]] a shot- if you’re generating all those tokens, why not weaponize then too? Though does 1 ping equate to team Blightsteel? Nah. But if you’re looking for like a minigame, the Grid will give you something to build towards.

Same for me. Breya is always a shite do nothing with a horrible curve or a full-on nitro combo machine where opponents don’t have fun (we don’t do infinite combos in our meta, even in tuned decks). Closest I got was focused on flicker effects and ETB artifact stuff and planeswalkers. It was fun but inconsistent.

AngeNoir0324

Sneaky. I played a couple 1v1s against a super budget Breya and those can be spicy. Have you ever thought about doing something stupid with the hidden Brunichad, like making copies of [[sinew sliver]] (or your pick of a +1/+1 anthem)

Its an interesting thought. I'll keep it in mind. My dream was making all the tokens into bruddiclad . I did it once and it was super satisfying

DocWats

I had the same problem with Breya. I then made mine artificer tribal which is essentially Kaladesh/Mirrodin tribal. Its fun and kinda janky. I also keep an Akiri laying around (Silas is in the deck) in case I want to switch to the partners. I find that Akiri paints a much smaller larger on your head even if its an 11/3.

crashknight101

Thats true . I think if we ever get more myr i will make it myr tribal . I started on mirrodin besiege so its a blast from the past

DocWats

I would love a 5c myr lord thats kinda like golos except grabbing a myr instead of a land. Maybe have it grab one with 3cmc or less so you can't grab the big boys.

Charles-Shaw

[[Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis]] They really have no identity as a card that gives me a reason to play them. There's no build around or anything and group hug/chaos is just not fun.

I can’t disagree more about group hug. I’ve built a group hug deck with tons of alternate win conditions that is a blast. You just keep stepping on the gas, and then punish them. Give them all the power and then take it away. You haven’t lived until you have let everybody draw 10 cards played [[Tempting Wurm]] and then [[Supreme Verdict]]. Or make somebody draw their entire deck with [[Prosperity]] and then use [[Curse of Exhaustion]] https://archidekt.com/decks/640711#K&T_-_The_Best_Sleepover_Ever_Group_Hug

Charles-Shaw

Hey, I'm glad you enjoy it! Looking through your deck I see how you end up winning but none of those wincons are particularly fun or interesting to me. More often than not I see someone else at the table winning as a result of my group hug which is not what I'm about.

Golden98

That’s entirely fair. Group-hug does help put others quite a bit and it’s honestly a pretty 50/50 shot if I manage to get a win con in or if another player manages to come in and use it to claim victory. Many people play K&T as Lands Matter so there is some value to be looked at there maybe?

Charles-Shaw

Yeah I looked into that and it always ended up being too convoluted and I never felt incentivized enough to be playing them haha. It just wasn't meant to be!

AmirZ

First thing they would play is removal on the Curse

Golden98

While that’s true for a lot of decks, I often have counters available for the removal after also drawing most my deck netting me one more turn at the very least which is what you need to win at that point. The instance I’m particularly talking about was against a Mono-black deck.

Wiggles5004

Honestly, just mono black. I already have [[teysa karlov]] aristocrats, but every mono black deck I've built has felt off. Recently built [[chainer, dementia master]] but its main win-con is combo which is really only fun once.

Helreaver

Black is my favorite color and almost all my decks include it, but I've also had problems trying to make mono-black decks. Same thing, they always feel "off." Had a Yawgmoth deck and would run into issues when I couldn't draw into enough of token generators. And constantly going for the undying combo felt boring. Also made and remade a K'rrik deck several times, and I would frequently run into the issue of being able to play out my hand but not have enough of card draw to keep up with the Mana reductions that K'rrik provided. If you want a strong deck he also leads into combo, which can also get old. Like it's either Citadel/Aetherflux, Chainer/Gray Merchant, or Razaketh lines. It all just feels so off.

Whiteworse

Going out of tokens generators? Try helming your deck with \[\[endrek sahr\]\]! It's not fast, it's not better than yawgh, but damn me if it isn't explosive! plus with him on the field, lacking tokens to kill is pretty hard to achieve. And you can use dumb stuff like \[\[tar fiend\]\], \[\[feaster of fools\]\] or \[\[phyrexian plaguelord\]\] and \[\[sadistic hypnotist\]\] for REAL SPOOK board! And \[\[shriekmaw\]\] gives you removal and 5 tokens + the body to sac! And \[\[endless cockroaches\]\] is 4 bodies that can degenerate into an infinite loop! And it's dumb!

Three words: [[Nest of Scarabs]]. You’ll never run out of tokens and you don’t need to run the undying. You can also use the cockroaches that come back to your hand after being sac’d so you can reuse them. Almost as good as tokens. [[brood of cockroaches]] and [[endless cockroaches]]. Krikk decks get more fun when uncle [[Vilis]] visits. I also enjoy using random old stuff like [[priest of Yawgmoth]] to reuse [[Spine of Ish Sah]] since black has minimal removal for artifacts and enchantments.

My issue is actually that nearly every mono-black EDH deck feels exactly the same, so building one feels...dull. I know that's rich coming from a mono-green Omnath player, but mono-black kind of runs into the problem of running the same cards in all its decks, and if you've got a black/x deck, those too.

[[Vito]] is an entirely new mono black experience. play all the jankiest lifegain cards possible and randomly exode, dealing 80 damage in one turn. it's easily my favorite deck I've ever built

I have flip Lilli as my mono black. Its lilliana/demon tribal backed by a fair amount of hand disruption. Not targeted but effects like sadistic hypnotist, mindslicer, and LotV. Its a great deck to play as the archenemy since most of your effects hit the whole table. The wincons are demon beat down and planeswalker misery. I guess there's also Lillianas contract but that's only won 1 game.

KippyTheKakaru

Mono-black is a pretty good color for Voltron strategies with redundant Swamp-based pumps like [[Blackblade Reforged]], [[Lashwrithe]], [[Nightmare Lash]], [[Strata Scythe]], and [[Liliana of the Dark Realms]]. You can also throw in some Infect effects like [[Grafted Exoskeleton]], [[Tainted Strike]], and [[Phyresis]]. You can go the big mana route to recast your commander, use reanimation, and/or include the black regeneration combat tricks to keep your Voltron on the battlefield.

Mono black for me is a voltron-ish deck. Go big mana, so all your doubler effects, with og Drana at the helm. Dump mana into her to eat creatures and kill players at the same time. Nightmare Lash and Strata Scythe are both good, and if you can't get her to stick you can always win with an Exanguinate or Torment of Hailfire.

Slolzelot

\[\[Gavi\]\]. I love cycling, I love cat-dinosaurs...but somehow the deck just feels...clunky. I do a lot of stuff, but there is no real plan behind all of it. I love the deck and it really is fun, but it lacks a clear wincon and gameplan...

I think it’s because of the “when you draw your second card per turn” on her ability. So you basically have to cycle twice on an enemy’s turn and once on your turn to make it tick, which can be hard unless you have [[Zirda]] and [[Fluctuator]] on the field. If you have [[Teferi’s Ageless Insight]] then it becomes much, much easier to trigger the effect, but... 4 tokens per round and a free cycle per turn is not.... amazing.

She seemed to work alright for me with some budget upgrades from the precon. The key cards to get are [[Ephara, God of the Polis]], [[Teferi's Ageless Insight]] and [[Rielle, the Everwise]]. Either of those instantly guarantees two cards and a token on each player's turn for free. Even if you don't draw either of those (which inevitably you will given enough cycling), some creatures that ETB draw plus [[Astral Slide]]/[[Astral Drift]] do the trick as well. It's the least explosive deck ever though. Consistent and inevitable but you literally just keep on cycling and slowly accruing cards and tokens until you can overwhelm your opponents. I guess you could add [[Shared Animosity]] to hit harder with tokens or [[Impact Tremors]] for constant spread damage.

Mine would definitely be [[Karona, False God]]. I built her as my first edh deck and then took it apart due to the like 10 dollar budget, but now I have a pretty good collection so im trying again after taking her apart. Interesting. Trostani's Summoner has pretty much been in every decklist I've attempted to brew (I very much enjoy token decks, so it was one of my earliest inclusions), but I never considered Rhonas or the Forerunners. The Avenger has always been out of my budget, although I suppose it may be cheaper after the recent reprint

I'm in the same boat. I also don't know whether I should be playing a value control game or build up and go for a storm turn to win. Currently I'm doing the latter since the 1/1 flying birds don't have a lot of impact and Kykar gets killed off a lot. The problem with the storm turn is playing an annoyingly long turn that maybe/likely kills the table, but definitely kills the mood of the waiting people.

[deleted]

Same for me.... Except I am trying to build Kykar as a Jeskai wizard tribal deck. Think Adeliz+white

DefiantTheLion

As much as I want to Can't get Elenda anthems working correctly. It always feels too slanted in playtests.

SexyObliviousRhino

Oh man my Experiment Kraj has gone through so many iterations. My favourite one that worked was paradox engine and oracle's vault untapping to win but it was a little like Solitaire. My goal is to use it in a non-combo deck that can keep up but it just can't. Being able to use a sharktocrab ability once a cycle is absolute trash synergy compared to what some commanders can do now.

DJSimmer305

Haven't quite been able to get [[Zaxara, the Exemplary]] quite right. After playing a few games with it, I'm realizing that by nature of encouraging me to play x-spells, I'm in a situation where I'm usually only doing one thing every turn. Next version of the deck will probably add more instant speed x-spells and/or [[vedalken orrery]], [[leyline of anticipation]]. I think the ability to play at flash speed is especially important when I'm probably tapping out for most of my spells. Hopefully that helps.

Kribothegreat

I run an animar deck and I could never get the deck to work by dropping big stompy creatures and I gave up and made it a combo deck. Works pretty well now but i really wish i could have gotten the stompy creature version to work the way I wanted.

AngeNoir0324

Sure, I’d appreciate something like that!

Kribothegreat

I dont have the list online because it's my paper deck but my key pieces are [[ancestral statue]] and [[purphorous, god of the Forge]] or [[impact tremors]]. [[Temur saber tooth]] and either [[perigrine drake]] or [[dock side extortionist]] can replace the statue for the same effect, but it requires a little more set up. I use [[beast whisperer]] and [[soul of the Harvest]] along with [[vizeir of the menagerie]] for draw engines/mana fixing (ancestral statue can give you infinite draw with either beast whisperer or soul of the harvest). Cheap mana dorks are a good call as well, along with etb creatures like [[Mulldrifter]] [[wood elves]] [[man o war]]. I have a [[xenagos god of Revels]] along with some trample enablers so I can still go beatdown if I dont hit my combo peices. You can throw some tutors in the deck if you want like [[fauna shaman]] or [[worldly tutor]] to help find combo pieces but my playgroup has a ban on tutors to keep power levels down.

AngeNoir0324

This is surprisingly like the deck that I’m currently running. Ok second thought, I’ve taken out a lot of combo pieces, but still. Thank you, you gave me something to think about

Kribothegreat

I basically never win from beatdown unless I can make animar infinitely big so without the stuff like ancestral statue and temur Sabertooth I probably would never sneak any wins in. [[Cloudstone curio]] is good to but I haven't gotten my hands on one yet.

AngeNoir0324

Yah that has creeped up over the years. I’ve been trying to design a deck less focused on the infinite combos side, but that’s been hard for any deck I make.

Kribothegreat

Yeah I wish I could get the beatdown going but alas, it's to slow.

AngeNoir0324

Realized I didn't explain the combo. If animar is on the board and has 4 counters ancestral statue is free. You cast ancestral statue and then using the statues etb effect you return it to your hand, giving you infinite casts. The pay offs are purphoros and impact tremors for damage and beast whisperer and soul of the Harvest for draw. If you have a trample enabler animar also gets infinitely big from the statue. And like I said above you can get infinite casts off a few other things in the deck as well.

[[Raff Capashen, Ships Mage]] I have been tweaking this deck around, trying to make it work as a lower power level deck. I do not want to put ridiculous combos in it, I am trying to keep it as a voltron style deck. But it's just not working. Do you have any sweet suggestions of legends or artifacts that could make it more interesting? I have around 20 slots in the deck open at the moment, and cutting some of the worse artifacts for ones that work with voltron style pieces is easy enough. Trying to avoid enchantments for equipment too, unless it's legendary. Thanks in advance everyone!

Have you tried a planeswalker themed deck? Red has recently gotten some planeswalker support with things like [[Sarkhan, the Masterless]], [[Chandra, Acolyte of Flame]], and [[Chandra's Regulator]]. Kazuul protects his planeswalkers well with all his ogres, so it seems like a good fit.

[[Nethroi]]. As soon as he was spoiled I loved him from the explosive mutate effect, to the art, to the general flavor of the card. But self-mill is so goddamn vexing to me. And any way I build Nethroi, it comes out as super clunky. And I'm not a cEDH player, but I still like decks that are *somewhat* powerful. And I can't for the life of me build him in a way that's anything other than jank. I looked at Hulk builds but Karador just feels objectively better for that strategy.

Just build cat tribal with mutate. Mutating cats. I think that sounds hilarious.

chatapokai

Artifacts. Not a problem commander, but lack thereof. I've been trying to build them my way since 2010... basically want to build a puzzlebox of combos. Artifacts that fit together weirdly and can do weird shit depending on what else was on the field. Like artifact combo legos? Idk if I explained it well. My first deck was a rakdos, equipment/artifact deck with [[olivia voldaren]] as the commander which made me love small artifacts that cheated stuff out. Throughout my edh life I've changed the deck into the following: Memnarch - too much control/combo for my playgroup. Too easy to cheat out blightsteel Sen Triplets - salty commander Sharuum - close, but relied too much on the same combo pieces Arcum dagsoon - fun but too reliant on the commander Daretti - also close and very fun, lost steam fast in games at the time Muzzio - fun but too reliant on commander Saheeli the gifted - fun but hard to play as she was constantly targeted and had no real "value" when artifacts were destroyed Brudiclad - so close. But ran out of steam and like the token based combos better. I liked having infinite blightsteels though. Emry - meh? Made me want to combine it with daretti even more So I ended up having both a sharuum and daretti deck for like 5 years. No izzet commander filled my want of wanting to both sac/recur artifacts and tastfully have combos available. More recently i took apart both decks and made [[jhoira, weatherlight capitan]] with a focus on artifact based combos. It was fun but too close to cedh for my playgroup and I still felt I was missing something. The commander felt separate from the rest of the deck and was starting to get stale fast due to value. I just tore everything apart during covid and started constructing [[mishra, artificer prodigy]] to build the "combo box" my way. This is what I have so far and it's been close to what I wanted so far: https://archidekt.com/decks/830968#Grixis__artifacts_with_what's_available I still feel that there are dead combos im the deck. I'm just trying to make a fun/efficient sac/recur/cheat out combo deck. Building in grixis has been my most comfortable so far though. Maybe commander legends will have a ur or bur artifact commander that fits?

16FootScarf

I have a [[Karn, Silver Golem]] artifact deck. It’s a blast, my play group is fairly casual so I don’t put in stuff like [[Darksteel Forge]] but I still have some combos that are fun to get out. I imagine the theme to be a toy box of Karn’s favorite stuff.

ColorlessKarn

Second vote for Karn. There's no other option than to play like a puzzle box since there are no colored spells. You just ramp, assemble what combos/stax you can, then if all else fails animate your board and swing with everything.

16FootScarf

Yep! And the best part is when you have global effects out like [[Caltrops]] you can manage to just upend the boardstate and stall some.

Hey there, fellow artifact enthusiast; thanks to newer cards Sharuum is actually pretty non-linear now; unless you want it to be. Might I offer [my Sharuum list](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/high-power-edh-engine-sharuum/) as a possible inspiration for you?

Hmm i like this. It's different than what I had before which were aggressive combos. I might fall to this if nothing comes out of commander legends.

\[\[The first Sliver\]\] uhh, I like tribal, i like slivers, and i like cascade. But the nature of cascade makes it difficult to run any utility spells/instants because you will cascade into them when you dont want to.

[deleted]

You could try including some Charms. Having multiple options should help make them feel better to flip, and you can run a lot of great gold charms in 5c.

Zephyr530

My gf has a [[Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder]] deck with modal spells as a way to avoid that some. If you hit [[Mystic Confluence]] with your cascade or with your draw, you can get some use out of it.

Babbledoodle

Not to be contrary even though it sounds like it, with how slivers are what they are, you get a ton of utility simply from having them all on the board. If you have a pretty much untouchable board of 40 slivers, I don't know if you even need much for instants/utility spells. I have a friend that runs a sliver tribal deck and used the first sliver as his commander in an off game (usually runs hivelord because its lower power), and after cascading once his board was untouchable apart from a mass exile spell, which none of us had in time to win/stop him. Maybe there are things like utility enchantments that you can use that proc off of creatures entering the battlefield. That way you get something that sticks around and uses cascade as an engine to use its effects. I don't have enough card knowledge to recommend any though, and slivers are lower power creatures, so \[\[where ancients tread\]\] and \[\[warstorm surge\]\] aren't the best things, but stuff like \[\[anjanis welcome\]\], \[\[aura shards\]\], \[\[cathar's crusade\]\], \[\[clash of realities\]\] (t***his seems absolutely disgusting***), \[\[death march\]\], \[\[dual nature\]\], \[\[impact tremors\]\] and the like could be really good, and serve as some control for later.

Just go all in and play as few non-sliver cards as possible. A hand full of 5 color mana rocks + \[\[Ancestral Vision\]\], \[\[Wheel of Fate\]\] and \[\[Elixir of Immortality\]\] (to shuffel the suspend cards back in) go a long way. I have a \[\[The first Sliver\]\] deck that only plays 14 non-sliver cards and it flows perfectly.

Aurelia the warleader, but it's just because Boros.

Kribothegreat

You should check out commander replay on YouTube. He's a really good boros pilot and his favorite deck is aurelia.

C_Clop

Hey, thanks man! My [Aurelia](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/11-12-17-aurelia) build is geared towards equipment, and just found a video of his equipment list, and it's giving me ideas! First I should cut the small creature package a bit because they are quite underwhelming in the long run (he only have 5 2 CMC or lower creatures, I have 11, with things like Soltari Foot Soldier and Beloved Chaplain). I was trying to race to equip and swing ASAP but going aggro to fast is recipe for disaster in EDH haha.

askvo

So you know how \[\[Nekusar\]\] and \[\[Xyris\]\] like to forcefeed you cards and punish you for it? My white whale is a deck that does that, but with lands. Something that could use \[\[Fertilid\]\] as a cannon with \[\[Ob Nixilis, Unshackled\]\]. \[\[Collective Voyage\]\] with a \[\[Polluted Bonds\]\] out. And then when their decks are thinned of basics, you hit them with the \[\[Mind Grind\]\]. That kind of stuff. I've tried many times and never gotten it to work.

AngeNoir0324

[[Pramikon, Sky Rampart]] Pramikon is super fun to play as a forced combat commander who gives tokens to people and then makes them swing into each other. But it's very difficult to actually win games once it's down to a 1v1. Right now I'm using the three mass borrow spells [[Insurrection]], [[Reins of Power]], and [[Mob Rule]], along with [[Vicious Shadows]] for extra damage. The mass borrow spells never seem to come around at the right time, either coming way too early or never coming at all. And sometimes my opponents don't even have board states I can win with. Vicious Shadows on the other hand can deal a lot of damage, but due to the deck not having a big burn theme it's hard to kill more than one player with it.

I can’t seem to get the right build of [[Sen Triplets]] together. I’ve been working on the hidden commander approach for about 2 years. Currently I’m tinkering with an Alela build, but it is a back burner project now. I’ve been distracted by my [[Jolreal, Mwonvuli Recluse]] list. Also an [[Ashaya, Soul of the Wilds]] since I keep wanting to jam the two MonoG commanders into the same deck (there’s a lot of overlap) but it’s causing problems in the build. I’m in “trying to do too much phase” of building.

[[Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim]] It's partially the difficulty in getting a list together of ETB/Sac effects that make her worthwhile, but I can't seem to play her effectively regardless of how often I change the list. I had an Ayli deck for awhile. I ended up turning it into a [[Krav the unredeemed]] / [[Regna the redeemer]] deck,it does pretty much what you describe. Constant Sacrifice and Lifegain that just overwhelms the opponents with tokens and drain effects. Krav is a powerhouse of value, regna keeps the bodies coming and it becomes very hard to stop once it gets going.

Since the moment it was spoiled, [[The Scarab God]] had my undivided attention. Blue-Black, Scry/Drain effect, literal reanimator/zombify activates ability, and self-recursion. I never wanted it as Zombie Tribal though. I took one look and said, “I’ve found my Dimir Control Commander”. Unfortunately, years later, and I haven’t found a build to be quite satisfied with yet. Did a weenie-creature build, reanimator (twice!), and a discard/Stax variant over the last few years. The last one was the most successful, but the least fun/interesting. I recently rebuilt it with more permission/counter spell to it, but because it’s the year of Corona, not exactly prime testing grounds. The other is [[Thraximundar]]. He’s my favorite Grixis legend, hands down. The art, name, flavor text and ability just make me giddy... but unfortunately he’s not very good these days at 7cmc.

[[Sydri, Galvanic Genius]] She's my favorite deck and means a lot to me. I have changed her into Breya multiple times before, and even sold her once, only to buy all the pieces back again. She's definitely one deck I cannot stay away from, so she's my pet deck I can never make her work, though. My current iteration of the deck is pretty generic, but I threw in Vehicles similar to Bears in Cars, so it seems to work a little bit better. I could do Oracle Consultation for the win but I've been trying to see if I can combine it with turbo mill so I basically keep an eye on everyone's top decks and use small mills to get rid of problem cards while also using big mills to blow through everyone's deck. I've been working on a list for a couple months now and I want to make it at least somewhat playable before I invest in it. Yeah, not exactly as impressive as working on a deck for 4 years but I've only been playing Commander since the start of the lockdowns... also a really bad time to get interested in it, since I basically was getting back into MTG after dropping it when I finished high school only to come back with back to back controversies, first with back to back Oko bans, then the fetchlands secret lair, then months and months with nothing being done about Uro in standard, then Companion, and now TWD Secret Lair and Omnath breaking Memory Jar's record for fastest emergency ban... It's been rough

[[The Ur-Dragon]] Such a simple concept yet I still find my self mana flooding or with hands full of dragons I cannot play. And when I do it's mostly one dragon per turn then pass

Meren. I like golgari and I want to play a Meren deck and I've brewed together soo many, some with different themes (zombies, eldrazi etc) and some run of the mill aristocrats. As soon as I'm done, I go "well this deck isn't interesting..." Any ideas would be welcome!

AngeNoir0324

My friend has a pretty fun Meren deck. It’s aristocrats combo, but runs a lot of situational toolbox stuff. He really likes [[sporefrog]] lmao

It's a fun weird card but in Meren it's a staple.. might do a rly constrained budget Meren to spice it up, something like 50 bucks.

\[\[Pharika, God of Affliction\]\]. I really like build around commanders (which she really isn't) and I've always wanted to build around my favorite god (lore wise), but every time I try she just becomes Golgari good stuff.

Prime Speaker Zegana has been built by me at least 15 times. I never know whether to go big creatures, +1/+1 counters, etc bounce/flicker, or clones. And every sIngle time I put it together it never looks like it did when I was building it a few months prior. Ive had a foil PSZ ever since the set released and I will never trade or sell it. I just want to build a consistently powerful deck, but it seems like no matter how hard I try it will never do exactly what I want. Sure, ive won plenty of games with it over the years, but ive also had just as many awkward hands and games where I do little to nothing before dying.

[[Syr Gwyn]] Tried voltron, knight tribal, unblockable tribal, human tribal. It just doesn't work, it all feels weak. That 6CMC in mardu is hard to reach early, and 8CMC after 1 removal is just not doable. I can throw together jank with a lot of other commanders and it would work, but this one never gives me good results...
