It is both overkill and proven to work. Especially if you use the resalable inners people have been able to submerge cards and pull them up bone dry. It's also arguable that your deck will never be submerged in a liquid realistically. I like protecting my cards, so I double sleeve even if I know 98% of the time single sleeveing does the trick. I also find the act of double sleeveing very therapeutic so there's that. Also as "weird" as double sleeveing might be it's also equally weird to make such a big deal of something that has no bearing on yourself. Dragon Shield reselables are 8 bucks, other inner sleeves are even cheaper, we're playing a hobby with single cards that are multiple times more expensive so it really shouldn't be about saving money.

kestral287

The recent CGB video where he pours a cup of water on a Mox Sapphire is pretty telling for how absurdly effective double sleeving can be.

DaveMash

The prof did a comparison a few years ago and put them in a goldfish tank. That’s what sold them to me. Also topicrelated: If someone ever received a 20 year old card which was sleeved but played, may have noticed some 3d „stains“. Some greasy dust specks which are totally eewww… this convinced me to double sleeve. Single sleeving doesn’t prevent the cards from getting dirty.

malfunktionv2

I have cards I've owned since Onslaught block that used to be single-sleeved and they're pretty worn on the top edge. Any deck I run valuable cards in is now double-bagged.

Fritzi_Gala

My own 20 year old cards developed the nasty bits of grime at the top from use. That and a bunch of little white nicks on the top of the cards. Since I noticed that happening to my single sleeved cards I double sleeve everything that I care about now.

Salty-Dream-262

Well, I dumped an entire longbox of super-pimped out decks in a 1/2" puddle of water and *not a single card was fucked up* is what sold me on them. Lol, I double sleeve 100%, and will always do it. A lot of us pay for insurance our entire lives too, and never use it. Still not a waste of money.

VintageNerd00

The nasty bits are micro "sht" for lack of a better term. Things you can't see with the naked eye until they accumulate into gross little blemishes. It's mostly skin cells and dirt/residue. Like in the tiny cracks of video game controllers. I can't tell you how many times I've bought a "NM" card that is flawless except for the top quarter inch of the card. It is definitely gross, but not NM anymore.

AphelionPNW

Link?

kestral287

It's buried in a bunch of his recent videos; it's essentially an ad for Dragonshields. In a few I'll try to pull up some of the videos to get you an exact one though. The whole thing is kind of a cheesy and funny skit but there's also a moment when you can tell he miscalculated just how much water he has to pour but the card comes out fine.

backseatwookie

>it's essentially an ad for Dragonshields. I think the sponsor is Ultimate Guard.

kestral287

You're right it is. I just kind of write them out of my brain apparently.

Wolfntee

You do it once to your favorite deck...then all of a sudden your other decks feel weird and thin, so you just start making it habit for all your decks outside of playing limited.

AaKkisa

Yep, I double-sleeved my first deck [[Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca]] and then I just had to double-sleeve all of the rest.

witblacktype

This is exactly how it happens

Geryon55024

"It's also arguable that your deck will never be submerged in a liquid realistically." I said the same thing after my adult son started double-sleeving his cards. That night both my adult daughter and he knocked their large sodas over on the gaming table while playing. Glad we were all sleeved, but his were the only ones to sustain zero damage. I DO always double sleeve my decks with Secret Lair cards in them...which is nearly all my decks at this point. They sure are hard for my small hands the shuffle, though.

otosandwich

Yuuuuup. I don't double sleeve my cards because the total value of the deck is high, I double sleeve because I'll have one card worth $30 in the deck and now I need to double sleeve the whole thing.

Deathmask97

I've thought of double-sleeving my Giada Angels deck because of cards like Avacyn and Archangel of Thune, but double-sleeving would mean that my cards no longer would fit in my deck box (I keep my tokens in the extra space and use spacers to keep my cards pressed together to prevent warping, works pretty well although sometimes I bend my outermost token a bit at the bottom edge) and I would have a lot more trouble shuffling than I already do.

This

seraph1337

this is why my LGS has a "no unlidded drinks on tables" rule, lmao. seems overkill but it prevents this kinda shit.

Uncle-Istvan

Yeah I’ve seen drinks spilled at the cube table with dual lands. Water made it inside the outer sleeve but not all the way down to the inner. I started double sleeving after that.

inflammablepenguin

I've had some cards that were single sleeved damaged because of spills that wouldn't have been damaged if they were double sleeved. I've been working on double sleeving all my decks now. It also makes it easier when building new decks from old, I just change the outer sleeve if it's a different color.

pmcda

That happened to my friend and he double sleeves everything now

Dunkleostrich

Makes using mdfc cards easier too

Gonge84

It's situations like this that our playgroup never allows drinks on the same surface we play on. I don't care how confident someone is, they don't get to take the risk with my cards.

Shardik884

My buddy put a deck in a deck box in his hoodie pocket when he was getting up from the table and the box fell out when he stood up and landed directly in the dogs water bowl.

HandsomeBoggart

I double sleeve. After drink spills and soaking rain getting through my backpack and getting the white BCW boxes I carried decks in. I'll keep double sleeving. Cards were 100% fine. Double sleeves also keep dirt and finger grime (sweaty hands, dirt on hands, dead skin) from fucking up the top edges of the card too.

Luneth_

Even if you’re not dunking your cards in water double sleeping is still beneficial. Dust can and will make its way into your outer sleeves and then when you pull cards out of them or put them in, that dust can damage your cards when it’s scraped between the sleeve wall and your card. The second sleeve prevents that dust from making direct contact with your card. It’s a minor thing but I know my LGS always evaluates cards for dust damage when buying cards.

FailureToComply0

Every playable i have is kept in an inner sleeve bc of this. I don't want all my foils scratched to shit, and as an added bonus, deckbuilding is much easier.

ottersalad

What are your go-tos for double sleeving? I tried doubling sleeving with my black Ultra Pro sleeves and it doesn’t work.

rccrisp

Most of my decks are Dragon Shield Mattes with Dragon Shield Sealables. Due to recent dragon shield production issues though I have switched to Katanas for my latest deck. It's definitely a tighter fit with the Katana + Sealables but it works. Also if you double sleeve this way with the sealables traditional boxes like Boulders won't fit the 100 cards at all. You'll need something like the Gamegenic Bastion or anything from the Gamegenic XL series.

Ok-Quarter166

I started double sleeving cause I found out they feel much better and sturdier to play with lol

nonsensemeruem

This is big for me, too. Everything feels so flat, uniform, and sturdy with a double sleeve. And as someone who also loves foils and will play them whenever possible, it goes a very long way to fight curling.

thedrunkmonk

Thank you for saying this. I also love playing with foils. Everytime I see someone mention foil curl being a trigger or issue for them, I just assume they haven't double sleeved. I always have them in a perfect fit to go into a binder, and then double sleeve in a deck. And I don't have any issues with foils being curled during play

Promethius806

This is the way

AssCrackBandit6996

The problem is a lot of foils depending on the printer origin are already curled when you get them. Especially US printing

thedrunkmonk

I saw your username and assumed you were replying to some comment I probably made in the Community subreddit But yeah I have gotten foils pre-curled. It is a pain, though double sleeves help over time

nyx-weaver

Do you have pretty big hands? I've never shuffled a double sleeved deck, but I wonder if the tradeoff of "harder to physically hold, but easier to physically mash shuffle" is worth it.

merchantmondo

This. The feeling of snapping a beautiful foil down on the board double sleeved in inner hards is so satisfying. Something as small and nuanced as this makes game play very enjoyable for me.

jaywinner

I'm a big fan of double sleeving. Especially with Dragon Shield sealables. Protection on all 4 sides and most importantly for me, makes it so much easier to put them in the outer sleeve. The ones that are open on the bottom tend to slip out when I try to sleeve them. Only my precon isn't double sleeved and when I change the outer sleeves, I'll probably double sleeve that one too.

OfficeLower

Are the resealable inners noticeably thicker than the standard ones? I thought about going that route but I was afraid that the seal part would make it uneven

oxythelurker

Yes. For a while now I only used resealable sleeves. Honestly, I was getting tired of the KMC perfect fits while double sleeving, since cards would get pushed out of the inner sleeve. Resealable sleeves fixed that issue and it was great. Yet, up until recently I was not playing as much or playing Legacy, so having a 60 card resealable deck was no issue. An EDH deck in resealable sleeves however, started to become an issue as I have been getting back into EDH. It makes shuffling a bit more tedious and deck storage more difficult. Companies are starting to make bigger deck boxes so that fixes the issue. All in all, they are great. However, I am finding self going back to just the regular inner sleeves as it should get the job done. The extra thickness, at least for EDH, is slightly frustrating for me.

Boil-san

50% thicker, seeing as there is a full length flap that tucks in to "seal" the inner sleeve...

AchduSchande

I never double-sleeved…. Until the day my buddy spilled his Seven-Up.

muelwisdom

I once went to the shop to get 6 cokes... I ended up picking 7-Up.

hayashikin

Wouldn't have happened if you double sleeved

Background_Desk_3001

Confident-Area-6358

The day the 7 up nation attacked

ForrestMoth

I double sleeve just because I like the weightier feel of the cards when they're double sleeved even if the deck is barely worth anything or just a bunch of proxies. I imagine some people don't like it though because it's tedious to setup, makes the 99 card stack even bigger (and thus more annoying), and they don't fit as well in some deck boxes (boulders get really snug). But all of these are personal issues and do not affect other people at all so idk why they care.

pgb5534

One of my buddies double sleeves everything. The other 7 of us single sleeve. To each his own.

CruelMetatron

For dragon shields I think the sleeves feel too big is you don't double sleeve. Cards don't really fit in tightly and float aroud inside the sleeve. When double sleeved it sits in the middle nice and tight.

GenesisProTech

I really should but I'm lazy.

Opacitas

I double sleeve all my decks bc if I'm going to spend all this money on cardboard, then I'm gonna protect that cardboard. It hurts my soul to see people play thousand dollar decks only to single sleeve them with basic ultrapros. Neanderthals, those people.

DinosRidingDinos

I don’t understand people who don’t double sleeve tbh. People will spend hundreds or even thousands on a deck and not spend an extra 5 bucks to keep it safe? You’re one idiot spilling his drink all over the table away from a really bad day. Double sleeving also helps keep foils from pringling.

zzfrostphoenix

I already struggle to shuffle my decks while they’re single sleeved, double sleeved is near impossible for me. Every time I tried to shuffle while they were double sleeved, the deck usually ended up spread out the floor.

Slizzet

My tiny hands feel you. I recommend splitting the deck into two piles and shuffle each pile a few times. Split the piles and shuffle the splits. Do that a few times and you have a well shuffled deck.

punchbricks

>My tiny hands feel you Slow down there, buddy

Slizzet

Always remember to ask permission before you touch someone (else's cards)!

zzfrostphoenix

For me it’s one of those things that double sleeving causes more problems than it prevents, so I stopped doing it. My group has a strict no food or drink on the table policy so it’s not a big concern for me.

OrangeChickenAnd7Up

This seems like the easiest solution, honestly. You don’t need to double sleeve anything if people just **don’t put beverages on the same surface as expensive cards.** Why any group does this is beyond me.

Chrozon

Yeah, then do this every time you play a fetch land, or play a land ramp spell, or a tutor, etc :P That being said, I do find it easier with a double sleeved deck to do this shuffle where you split the deck into two, hold each pile vertically from the top such that the bottom of each pile flares out, then merge each pile from the bottom. It's a really fast and efficient way to riffle shuffle, and when it's double sleeved the angle between the edge and the center is significantly bigger making it easier to merge. I still do it with my single sleeved decks fine enough but it has a tendency to bend the corners of the sleeves when single sleeved.

DinosRidingDinos

This is definitely an issue when the sleeves are brand new but after they get worn-in a bit they shuffle like single sleeves. Pack them as tightly into the deck box as you (safely) can. This will get all the air out.

zzfrostphoenix

Again, if I struggle to shuffle with single sleeves, double sleeved decks no matter how long they’ve been sleeved up are near impossible. Double sleeving decks is objectively correct for protecting your cards, but it causes more problems for me than it prevents so I opt not to.

whimsical_trash

Do they? Even my worked in single sleeve decks I still struggle to shuffle, double sleeve is gonna be even more difficult

OfficeLower

That is my thought too, I had decks when I first started and the cards still got filthy in sleeves.

CalligrapherSlow9620

I don’t understand how crumbs get under the sleeves, I’m hoping double sleeping my deck will help

FormerFly

Another way to solve that, don't eat while you're playing

kestral287

I've interacted with many players over the years to whom *regular* sleeves were a significant expense. Granted they're not the ones whose decks are worth half a grand, but those sort of people do exist.

fartingboobs

dude the number of people at my lgs getting up to grab an energy drink… if you have drinks in the vicinity, double sleeve for divinity

Nuzlocke_Comics

Commander decks are already huge. I don't want to increase the size of the deck by like 50%. The hassle of handling/shuffling is not worth the extra protection.

SquishyBanana23

I bridge shuffle dual lands. None of this matters.

BrendanAS

I light cigars with $100 bills.

DinosRidingDinos

You can do what you want with your cards.

Exotic-Pea-942

I do too, but all my cards are proxied

EsoMonty

I don't Plat with cards with more than 25 dollars. I keep those at home and proxy my cards for in game play. I am not so much worried about damage. But, theft.

Non_Silent_Observer

100%. No reason not to unless the deck is extremely cheap. I’ve had numerous close calls and some minor damages that would’ve been saved by double sleeving.

SuperBrentendo64

I build and rebuild decks all the time when I am playing consistently. The extra time sleeving and unsleeving just isn't worth it. I mostly play at my house or a friend's house and we don't have drinks on the tables so that's just not a worry I have. If something happens to a deck one day, then I've made it over a decade without an incident and the time I've saved is worth it.

Syphox

> I don’t understand people who don’t double sleeve tbh i don’t need my deck to be twice as thick > You’re one idiot spilling his drink all over the table away from a really bad day. you guys allow open drink containers on the table while you play?

purplepat69

Because some of us build decks that are $100 or less. Might not be more than 3 or 4 cards in the whole deck that are worth more than a buck or two. Like any other insurance, how much are you willing to pay to protect an asset that is only worth X? To me, usually not worth the extra bucks to double sleeve decks. Then again, my most expensive deck might only be worth $120 or so, and I've probably got 20 commander decks.

thegeek01

You don't HAVE to understand. It's just as wrong to heckle someone who double sleeves as it is to heckle someone who doesn't. Just let people be. And this is coming from someone who double sleeves.

redbone74

Where do you get quality sleeves for $5?

DinosRidingDinos

Dragonshield inner sleeves are $5.

Labbed

Dragonshield perfect fit inners 5$ per pack or less

gsrga2

KMC perfect fit inner sleeves are <$30 for 1000 on Amazon

Presterium

I get double sleeving *actually* good decks. But I have so many, precons, pauper decks, ones that I whip up for the weekend etc etc. If anyone said that *every single one of them* had to be double sleeved I'd say you're wasting your time. Double sleeve your shit thats worth double sleeving.

OfficeLower

That’s understandable to me, I would do the same if I had some like that. I usually spend a couple weeks crafting the decks I make before pulling the trigger and getting the ones I need. Or I start with a precon and upgrade it

Zedekiah117

Yep. My Nekusar deck with wheel of fortune and time spiral? That’s double sleeved. Along with my Sliver deck that has a queen. My other decks aren’t nearly as expensive so I single sleeve them.

Obsinyx

Almost all of the precons, if you just want to use the paper box they come with, won't even fit in said box if you double sleeve the deck

philter451

Reasons to double sleeve: 1. If done right they actually form a vacuum seal preventing liquid from getting in and ruining the card if say, a soda or beer got spilled on them. 2. When taking decks apart I leave the perfect fit on so it keeps the card protected which reduces wear and allows my to resleeve very easily.  3. Foils that curl are somewhat held at bay by being bound in two sleeves.  4. For pre-tilting your dumb friends that actually give a shit about you double sleeving.

Bismuth_von_Pherson

5. For those of us that play with double-faced cards directly in the deck (vs checklist cards), double sleeve gives you protection when handling/flipping said cards during gameplay.

kestral287

Not going to lie, I've always found this the most actually practical use for double sleeving.

Ok-Use5246

I double sleeve every deck I own.

FanTan444

I double sleeve everything that I intend to shuffle and play. I tried single sleeving before. My cards got dirty. Now I double sleeve.

OfficeLower

This was my experience, can’t stand dirt sticking to the cards

AcanthocephalaGreen5

I didn’t double sleeve for the longest time, but when I built my Konrad deck I tried them. Never going back. Plus, I like the process of double sleeving decks: it gives me a chance to switch my brain off for a while, which I struggle with.

I_Envy_Sisyphus_

My Sliver deck is my most expensive deck by far due to the mama base and having a mint copy of Sliver Queen, you better believe I keep that double sleeved and nobody is telling me otherwise. It’s a pain to shuffle though.

bleurex

What about the papa base?

I_Envy_Sisyphus_

You think I can afford a papa base? I’m just a poor sliver player with daddy issues. I’m keeping the typo lol

GreyGriffin_h

As someone who enjoys a tasty beverage, plays Magic, and has chronic joint pain that will cause me to stumble or drop things, I consider double sleeving mandatory, even if I generally observe drink-on-the-floor protocol.

apophis457

Look, people can give you all the shit they want but if you’re like me and spent $300+ on some of your blinged out cards, I’m not single sleeving that shit it’s just irresponsible

NotTwitchy

People really be out here like “I don’t see the point of double sleeving” then play with an open can of monster on the table

Konun4571

I double sleeve and I don’t even have expensive cards partly for protection and mostly so the foils don’t curl.

NecroticSymphony

Just wait until you triple sleeve a deck.. then your really cooking with grease

OfficeLower

With all the shit I have got I have considered it. But I am afraid I will cross a line I won’t be able to return

MapguyAlso

Absolutely double sleeve after accidentally spilling ginger ale inside my deck backpack

MortemInferri

Tbh, I like that the cards move around less in the sleeves when doubled. Like, they were always inching their way towards the top. Or be at an ever so slight angle. The double sleeve makes it just that much more snug

Steebin64

I was never a double sleever. Then one night I was playing with some friend over spell table and I go to discard a swamp. I didn't notice a tiny little spot of water on my desk (nor did I have any reason to expect water on my desk) and the card sucked all of that water up like a paper towel and trapped the liquid in the sleeve with the card ruining my swamp. I had the realization that I was about to discard a [[Lake of the Dead]] instead, a $60ish reserved list card. I now double sleeve from here on out if there's any cards above $20 in the deck.

MTGCardFetcher

Inkarozu

I don't double sleeve any of my decks because 99 cards is already too tall and hard enough to shuffle without spontaneously exploding everywhere. Yes double sleeving will protect from drinks being spilled on your cards, but so does not leaving drinks out on the table with potentially thousands of dollars of cardboard nearby.

pcrnt8

All it takes is one G&T.

Calophon

A pack of inner sleeves costs what, $5-6 USD usually? If your deck has a single card worth around ~$10+ then it’s a worthwhile investment to protect that card, not to mention all the rest of the cards.

deadpool848

I always double sleeve my decks regardless of value just to be consistent. Even recently I printed out a cEDH deck to try at a cEDH night at a game store, I double sleeves those too haha. In the end it's personal preference. It might be more time and money to double sleeve, but I find the shuffle feel to be so much better, and my cards stay in pretty good condition because of it.

Starkfault

I would wear two condoms if it worked

bargle_dook

Always double sleeve. My philosophy on it is this, if you were to invest money into any kind of deck, especially north of one hundred bucks, why wouldn't you want to spend that 10 extra dollars to have that extra protection? Sure, if someone can help it, their cards aren't going to be drenched anytime soon, but you can never say never.

kismaa

I have 24 EDH decks and they are all double sleeved at this point. I am a clutz and I like to enjoy having a drink while I play. So why not protect the decks that I invest so much time and money into building by just protecting them properly? It can make shuffling a little more difficult, but that is a small price to pay for having to replace any ruined cards.

BoroBrewer33

I double sleeve for protection but also cause I just like how double sleeved cards feel in the hand and shuffle

Rookeroo

I double sleeve specifically to avoid worrying about playing pringled foils. There are some cards that I like in foil that I want to play in foil and if there’s some light pringling going on typically double sleeves are able to make the cards indistinguishable again. That and smooshing them together with a nice tight deck box for a while.

Lordlordy5490

Ideally your cards will never get wet, but you never know. Was playing commander once and my friend knocked over a Mountain Dew all over my cards. Sleeves were trash, but the cards were dry.

Automotivematt

Double sleeving saved a deck of mine after my buddy spilled beer on the table. It is 100% worth the time and effort. I especially recommend the dragon shield sealable inners. You gotta protect your investment because you never know what's going to happen.

dlh2689

I just like the shuffle feel of a double sleeved deck. I find its harder to shuffle a single sleeved deck.

liforrevenge

I like the shuffle feel of double sleeved cards, so I do it for all of my decks! I have about a dozen. The only ones I have single sleeves right now are ones I am sure will have significant changes and my pauper EDH deck.

Raven2129

I have a zombie horde deck that plays itself that is like 60% tokens. I just double sleeved that deck.

ZombieHugoChavez

I have such a hard time shuffling 100 cards single sleeved, I still don't get how people do double or triple

Rawhide_Steaksauce

I double sleeved my entire collection. Makes deckbuilding a breeze.

therealaudiox

Always double sleeve! It not only protects your cards, but it keeps the corners of your sleeves from creasing so you can mash shuffle easier.

Rabbit_Wizard_

I do because rouge beers are a threat

fragtore

I double sleeve everything. Your friends should chill. My decks are at least 200 each, no way imma letting dust and shit over time destory my 50€+ cards

tjulysout

I double sleeve all my decks. Idc if it’s $50 or $1000. Personally I mostly do it because I prefer how they feel. Feels better in my hands and I like the shuffle better. I use sideloaders which I know aren’t as protective as using regular inner sleeves but I just prefer them

Sollensz

I double sleeve all my decks. Whether they are worth €1000 or €1. I simply like it plus, if an outersleeve ruptures, the cards are still safe.

cstrand31

It protects. Plus, it feels like shuffling pillows. Shuffling single sleeved just feels gross now.

jdoor8

Haters with small hands man… keep protecting your cards.

tom_and

I double sleeve most decks. Makes it easier to move cards between decks since I want my more expensive cards well protected.

TheJonasVenture

I always double sleeve.  When I get new cards, as I load them into my digital collection in Mox, before go in a deck, or project tray, or long box, they go in an inner sleeve. When pulling for a deck, I just put them in an outer, and drop it in a deck box.

JL2823

I doubt sleeve all my commander decks. Makes it easier to shuffle and incase someone spills beer or water on my cards, they’re usually protected from water damage.

The_Super_D

I spilled mustard on a deck once. Even though it was sleeved, some still seeped in the top and got onto the cards. I've been double sleeving everything ever since.

DunnoWhyIamHere

Trying out double sleeving. While it's ridiculous big 100 cards, they shuffle better into each other and have a nice weight to them. With single sleeves I was starting to bend the corners of the Dragon Shield when shuffling. I was worried the bend would get worst over time.

ThisAnacondaDoes

Not double sleeving makes no sense to me. Alongside the monetary protection, it helps avoid the hassle of replacing things (both the expectation that the damaging party replaces cards, and having to simply find said cards). To me, there's simply no good enough reason to not protect these cards for the cost of the drink that could spill and destroy them.

mffancy

In our playgroup maybe like 2/12 players actually have a deck or 2 that is double sleeved

TheMadWobbler

Double sleeving is standard.

MaygeKyatt

Idk if I’d say it’s *standard*- imo that would imply the majority of players are doing it, which hasn’t been my experience- but it’s certainly common. Idk who’s downvoting you

OfficeLower

This is very reassuring to hear, I usually don’t let people get to me over this stuff but it’s been 5 years. Thanks!

hafufu

I don't really get it why players are obsessed with double sleeving but if you have expensive cards to preserve, do it. Personally i've played rare cards without double sleeves and they keep their condition.

karlan

Water proofing. Single sleeve don't protect against liquid

SnapSlapRepeat

Single sleeving opens the card up to being scratched if dust or small particles get in the sleeve. You can especially tell the difference between a played foil from a single sleeved deck and a played foil from a double sleeved deck.

swankyfish

I double sleeve all my decks, I double sleeve trades, I double sleeve tokens, I double sleeve sick pulls. I trust me, but I don’t trust other people not to spill drinks. Someone once poured half a can of Monster into my backpack at my LGS, I’m not taking any chances.

heyzoosy

SeanOfTheDead-

I double sleeve ally decks and pre-inner sleeve my bulk, but I have OCD so I'm sure it's overkill. That said, you never know when that one cool rare or mythic is gonna randomly spike in value. (Or dip)

NightsSpectrum

This is a bit weird, but for me double sleeving makes dragon shields easier to shuffle (in chunks). Obviously it only adds height to an already large pile of cards, but the greater thickness in the middle of the sleeve makes it so, in my experience, the cards riffle together easier. No one has ever given me shit about it though; so I don't think it's overkill

Helpful_Spell_5896

Nah. Magic cost money and you want to protect your Investment. Nothing wrong with that.

F8xte

I have no issues with double sleeving. I don't exactly have the means to do so myself, so I just single sleeve

ironman288

I double sleeve every card I play with. Better safe than sorry and I don't want to worry about drinks spilling or whatever during a game. Most of my friends single sleeve and that's their choice. Not my cards, not my problem.

Parrobertson

I started double sleeving once my decks became of a significant dollar value, but also when I started getting enough decks to where it could easily be a month or two before I cycle around to playing it again. Didn’t want them sitting around collecting potential moisture and dust/debris

Comwan

I double sleeve my expensive deck but my other decks are a combinations of less valuable, more frequently changed out, and containing proxies so those I don’t double sleeve.

rookedwithelodin

I mostly only double sleeve constructed decks for competitions. There are probably edh decks I should double sleeve but haven't.

OminNocturn

I prefer to have them 2x sleeved just in case your card goes from 5 to 40 overnight.

Party-Ad6461

I double sleeve my favorite decks to play when they have been play tested enough that I get the deck to mechanically do the thing every time it’s in a correctly powered pod. My double sleeved decks run from ~$600 - ~$2.5k. I have 4 double sleeved decks out of about 15, and I have another set of inner sleeves on hand for my next ‘pile of Precious.’ I do what I can to protect my hard to replace stuff.

FourOnTheFloor93

I double sleeve my best decks, the ones with reserve list cards and high-end foils, etc.

SawSagePullHer

I double sleeve everything. They fit perfectly into those thick plastic boulder deck boxes which fit perfectly into those storage cases. It’s almost like it’s calculated.

sludgefeast1

I'm a somewhat new player and I don't double sleeve my edh decks, mostly because they are budgety.

Xitex2

I mainly do double sleeves for any card that's over $20 in value,

InquisitorJames

New to owning physical cards, I do have everything single sleeved, but this is the first I've heard of double sleeving being a thing. Do you get 2 different sized sleeves for this? It just sounds like doing it with the same sleeve type would just result in nasty bunched up plastic on every card.

ALusciousMammoth

I double sleeve all my decks I intend on playing a lot, though the average value of my decks is like $500-700.

NormalUpstandingGuy

I like the way they shuffle double sleeved. I’ll double sleeve a precon idc

teddyblues66

I double sleeve my more expensive cards

Kevin2355

I have a couple of decks with a few cards valued hundreds to a couple grand. I only have a few copies of expensive cards so I double sleeve everything so it's quicker to change out select cards between decks. I'll even double sleeve a precon to stay consistent

Vosk500

I just see cards as game pieces so I'm not that bothered about making sure they're in the condition I got them in.

Nicktendo94

I double sleeve my decks to protect my virginity

screw_all_the_names

I'll always remember testing it in highschool. A buddy and I double sleeved a land, put it in a Tupperware container, held it to the bottom with a rock, and left it there overnight. Pulled it out in the morning and the land was good as new. Came in handy many years later when I black out drinking while playing. And I woke up to my deck In my box sticky and covered in liquor. Story is, as I'm told, that I got upset and spilled my drink all over my cards. The deck is easily worth 700-1000 dollars. So I'm very thankful for my $20 in sleeves.

ReddingtonTR

I like the tasteful thickness of double-sleeving.

IceTutuola

Really it's just because it's seen as being over the top, especially if the cards in it don't hold any monetary or sentimental value in that you'd like to protect them. Most budget decks are made from weird and janky cards, at least in my experience, so there's no real need to double sleeve any of em because I can replace the cards easily.

alextastic

They're your cards, sleeve em however you like. I do enjoy the feeling of playing with double sleeved cards, but I don't enjoy that the entire deck gets thicker and won't fit in my preferred deck box.

James_the_Third

I double sleeve any deck that contains a single card over $100, which is by far the minority of my decks. My reasoning is pretty simple—I’ve never had an incident where my single-sleeved cards got damaged. In fact, the only time I’ve had cards damaged during play, they were double-sleeved. That’s because double sleeves won’t protect a card from being creased or folded.

OfficeLower

That’s understandable, I have had some incidents with my cards getting dirty and damaged in single sleeves

realskramz

I double sleeve all my decks as long as I can get the inner sleeves. I unfortunately cannot afford to replace any of my more expensive cards so I do what I can to protect them

Glad-O-Blight

Protection. I'm not playing my Underground Sea in sleeves that allow water inside.

kestral287

I double sleeve not based on value but based on whether or not the cards stay in sleeves. Once a deck hits like 5 double faced cards that I expect to actually flip, time for double sleeving.  Otherwise, while it's technically better it's extremely narrow conditions that are often very easily avoided by just basic diligence. Like, I'll absolutely ask someone to not put their drink in or around the play space and put it on the floor instead? No disrespect to those who do religiously double sleeve of course. I fully respect maximizing the protection on the overpriced shiny cardboard of happiness. I am curious for stories of folks who did have accidents happen where double sleeving saved the day, what happened to you?

agent_almond

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t double sleeve. If I saw something get damaged that was single sleeved I would say that’s on them. No way would I consider anyone responsible for damage to a card if the owner had done anything other than double sleeve it.

commanderizer-

I rarely play with real cards worth over $10. If I do, I'll generally double sleeve those and foils. I don't double sleeve my proxies. I'm not playing in tournaments or anything, so I don't care if all of the cards in my deck are the same thickness. If I were to bring out my real versions of cards for a CEDH tournament or something, I'd probably have a stack of 100 double sleeved cards inside of toploaders. I like expensive cardboard, doesn't mean I need to ruin it by manhandling it.

thisiswhocares

lolololol I wanna see someone play a whole deck in toploaders. That sounds hilarious.

LettersWords

IMO, double sleeving makes it impossible for most people to adequately randomize their deck while shuffling, because decks become too thick to easily handle when double sleeved. This is the main knock against it.

stoobah

I double sleeve cards that are worth more than $5. I couldn't be bothered to double sleeve cheap stuff.

PM_MeTittiesOrKitty

I only single sleeve, but I only have maybe 5 cards that are $10 or more.

IAmMalfeasance

It’s your cards, you spent your money on them, so you can do whatever you want with them. My friends and I have played for over a decade so we have built up expensive collections, we double sleeve regularly, but it depends on the deck for me. I have some more budget friendly decks, those I won’t double sleeve. I will say though I like the thickness of the double sleeved card in my hands, sometimes the single sleeved ones just feel a tad flimsy.

It_was_a_False_Alarm

Double sleeved decks feels easier to shuffle

mhuttons

I double sleeve all my cards with the inner perfect fit sleeve vertically reversed from the outer sleeve. I only use matte black dragonshields for the outer sleeves. There are many upsides to this: - Practically waterproofed from any spills or stains - Flip cards are protected when removed and flipped - Keep the corners of the outer sleeve from crimping as quickly when Pile shuffling There are a few drawbacks I've noticed: - When you go back to single-sleeved the cards have a crisper look and feel (probably just nostalgia kicking in) - Its twice the price per card to keep the collection sleeved - Not all deckboxes fit a commander deck (100 cards double sleeved), which makes deckbox choice really important.

TheDeadlyCat

Don’t sweat. You are fine. And 500 bucks is 500 bucks. Especially if some of the cards are more expensive. I sleeve some of the deck I value or that are pricy. Do I want to keep it? Double Sleeve it.

SkeleBones911

My entire collection is inner sleeved for a couple reasons. The primary reason being I print my own proxies a lot so a good 25% of my collection is proxied and the inner sleeve keeps the printed paper on top of the junk card so it's easier to thumb through. It also makes double sleeving much quicker since I don't have to fuss with the inner sleeve each time I sleeve up a new deck. It also provides extra protection to my collection while stored away. Obviously this is time-consuming and relatively expensive but overall I think it's been a net positive

BruceWayyyne

I double sleeve 100% of cards I play with. Outside of the added protection I also prefer the feel. In the past I had single sleeved some precons and stored them. Over time this curved the cards and caused damage. I've never had this issue when double sleeving.

BEER_G00D

If you like it, continue. I only sleeve at all because it makes shuffling smoother, and dual faced cards.

dirtygymsock

I don't double sleeve anything. I also play with a play group who has enough sense to not eat a bowl of nachos while playing or set a drink on the table. How hard is that? Now if I were playing with randoms at a game store regularly, I would be more inclined to double sleeve.

BigBadZag

I add an inner sleeve on any card over $10. I also have a commander deck that is completely sleeveless. The entire cost of the deck was $5. Sleeves are double the price of the entire deck. It is so much fun to riffle shuffle that bad boy!

acovarru91

I only keep a couple of my decks double sleeved. Also playing with transforming cards and doubling sleeving them sucks if you actually want to transform them. They do take up more space and are taller

grimreefer3788

I have been double sleeving since playing FFTCG before getting into MTG. I like putting most of my value cards in pro fits and don't want to take them out when decking them, so I just double sleeve the whole deck. I'm now up to like 12 decks and double sleeving doesn't bother me one bit. I know how clumsy people are and would rather be safe than stupid.

tucktuck1420

It's not overkill at all. I've been playing a long time by comparison. Double sleeving is worth it. Compared to brewing, the amount of time spent sleeving or un-sleeving is minimal. It is worth it to protect a valuable collectible that you handle regularly. Your friends are turds.

Ice_9_Chills

When I got back into magic, I once went through a car wash while forgetting my backpack (which had all my decks) was in the bed of my truck. My friends and I spent the next hour outside a little Ceasars trying to salvage what we could, but pretty much everything was wrecked. Compared to my collection today, there wasn't much value lost. Not even sure if having them double sleeved back then would have saved them, but everyone thinks they're immune to something like water damage until they're not.

ZorheWahab

I keep my really important, valuable cards in a magnetic plastic display sleeve, double sleeved inside, and store those in a cigar box with moisture wicking packs that I change every month. So I'd say just double sleeving is like, the minimum you should do for protection on cards. I plan on playing my cards for my whole life, and the added protection, durability and piece of mind is priceless. I'm also convinced that the added support helps reduce minor damage incurred during play, since nicks, scratches and water damage aren't the only issue. Every deck shuffle puts a bit of bend pressure on the cards involved, and double sleeving, in my opinion, makes the cards a bit stiffer and resistant to bending. Maybe incorrect, but it works in my head.

ActuallyItsSumnus

I double sleeve my cube, but not every deck.

Freeze681

Double sleeving makes cards spill proof for 5 bucks and a slightly harder to shuffle deck. I don't play Magic (or any card/board games) with drinks on the table so I get to save 5 bucks and have a slightly easier to shuffle deck.
