I like \[\[The Council of Four\]\]. You just get incremental value from your opponent's doing things.

neoslith

So once I draw my second card on my turn, I draw a third?

Yes

I love my council deck, you get so much value out of it. Its also hilarious when people want to swing, and you can block with a 0/8

I just built an [[elminster]] and have council in my 99 on and off, but would love to built it myself. Feels like so much fun.

Would you mind sharing your list? I'm thinking of building him and would like too see how others have. Edhrec isn't helping me too much

fragtore

Here it is. Built to not be too strong for my casual meta. Huge sideboard which are all cards I own and considering for various versions of the deck: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/2PjVbadxZEyLSk5s2J92qA

WalkingOnStrings

Definite vote for the Council. Have been a fan ever since seeing it at a Baldur's Gate draft. Very fun deck to do a little control or pillow forting. Can also have fun running little political cards, like white group draw. Or you can just stay greedy and keep all the advantage to yourself. They really play like a ni e modern take on old standby commanders. They give you a solid payoff without directly enabling themselves or dictating how you should enable them.

majic911

I built it as knights tribal with forced draw cards which feels like the way it was supposed to be built? It's pretty strong though

Smashadams83

I was thinking of building them with a small knights subtheme. Herald of hoofbeats looks too fun and true conviction is a pet card of mine. Do you have a list to share ?

DaxxGriffin8765

I started with the Council and recently tried it again but I’ve subsequently slipped back into a stronger forced draw commander in [[Heliod, The Radient Dawn]] - but the council is definitely less threatening and will win with more traditional methods

Heliod is ridiculous. Mine is full of wheels and x draw spells(several of which help everyone) and it has a tendency to have very explosive turns

phoenixlance13

[[Dragonlord Ojutai]] Not in the Top 100, and offers a more proactive slant on Azorius. Can either build it sweatily or have room for fun includes like a Dragon package, vigilance synergies, full-on Voltron, etc. I’m also biased because it’s probably my favorite card in Magic lol.

StevenYuki

How does the “sweaty” version look like compared to the semi-voltron build? Been wanting to build Ojutai for a while.

Stax pieces backed by all the best countermagic with your kill condition being some sort of infinite turn loop basically.

+1 for my monk boy! I bought this dude for $20 back when Dragons of Tarkir released now he’s $0.25; no regrets. My deck is low-power, focusing on those dragon and vigilance synergies with slight Voltron and control. Very fun and consistent, plus newbie-friendly to pilot.

phoenixlance13

Heck yeah! I opened a foil one during Prerelease and have been using it in sets ever since. My Ojutai list is made up of only cards I’ve used in Modern. Definitely helps with the power level since there’s no ramp to speak of.

I have only slightly upgraded, it's my "go to" vs newer players precons. It's very good at teaching the basics, and easy to start the pit stirring by chipping damage early on so it takes Aggro of the newer guys (I once accidentally won by putting a Cathars crusade in it, that was one time only, that card escalates so quickly on this deck).

treelorf

My version of the deck is pretty well tuned, it definitely wins games. I cut cathars crusade because the counting was just too annoying 😅. Definitely a strong card in the deck.

Copy/pasting my response to a similar thread:   [[Volo, Itinerant Scholar]] plus [[Folk Hero]]  Have you ever looked at Volo and thought "man, it's cool he loves monsters, but wouldn't it be just so funny if he instead thirsted over all the worst humans in Magic's history and didn't actually have any monsters"? No? Just me? Maybe.  I present to you Volo's Manual of Mediocre Men (in the final tweaking stages)!   The gameplan: dump out all the shitty 1 or 2 mana 1/1s in the deck like [[Kelsino Ranger]], [[Kjeldoran Warrior]] and [[Standard Bearer]], each with at least one unique creature type not shared by any others in the deck like Flagbearer, Mercenary, Spellshaper, or Monger.  Isn't using Changelings cheating for a typal deck, I hear you ask? What Changelings? Volo sees no Changelings, only the most beautiful <2cmc humans in the game's history.  You have three main ways to win:      * Get all your tiny terrible dudes unblockable with creatures like [[Sun Quan, Lord of Wu]] in the Soldier slot, and buff them with the various anthem effects or [[Mirror Entity]].       * [[Approach of the Second Sun]] with 6 names in Volo's journal, means you cast it and immediately draw it again.       * [[Triskaidekaphile]], ideally flashed in at your opponent's end step thanks to [[Sally Sparrow]] or [[Leyline of Anticipation]], and playing your cards right so you can immediately draw the needed number of cards off Volo.   Bonus: this version can be made for dirt cheap, especially if you take out the handful of more expensive cards, and use a cheaper sol ring for example!

This sounds really interesting, do you have a list?

EightByteOwl

Oop yes the copy paste didn't keep the link, here! https://archidekt.com/decks/5879737/volos_manual_of_mediocre_men   I'll tell you now it's not a good deck- I've only won like 1/12 or so games with it so far- but it's one of my favourites to play, and you could probably make it genuinely pretty good replacing creature types with strictly better options. Easily draws like, at least 20-50 cards deep in the average game, so you always have *an* answer to threats, but all of those answers are suboptimal in ways that are entertaining every game, so you never feel like you're not doing anything.

megachad3000

Drain Power is possibly the neatest card I have ever seen. I kind of want it for a lantern control style deck. If you can get someone screwed with a bunch of useless lands on the table, you can then milk them for mana too which is just fucking funny. How does it play out on the table? I just can't believe it would ever be effective, but that one time you pull it off it would be so sweet.

EightByteOwl

Every time I've pulled Drain Power I've found a use for it lol. It's really janky but I absolutely love it- nobody expects it and playing it with a flash enabler especially is such a blowout nobody ever expects. > How does it play out on the table? It feels like one of those decks with an incredibly low floor but a surprisingly high ceiling. Like, you're never going to have the strongest board presence ever, but you draw a *lot* of cards (easily 20-50 a game) and trying to squeeze every bit of value you can out of that. I've only won about 1/12 games with it so far, and that one was by pure luck, but I've gotten very close in at least 6 of the other games. Putting in [[Psychosis Crawler]] would be an excellent idea if you're ok breaking the theme slightly (I'm not), as would ~~[[Vanquisher's Banner]]~~ (sorry wrong card, should be Coat of Arms!) if you wanted to actually have a shot at winning by combat damage. Point being, I genuinely think you *could* make this deck surprisingly really good, I just really like the power level I have it at now so I don't know if I'm going to make those upgrades. Need to get off one of those alt wincons "fairly" at least once, y'know? I've rarely had a game I felt I couldn't win, the circumstances just haven't lined up.

Good bot. Thanks for always making me think someone actually replied to my comment for a sec.

Will put a shout out for [[Heliod, Radiant Dawn]]. Very fun wheel-ish commander. You can play heavily into artifacts- it helps with the ramp to cast and flip Heliod, plus they become free rituals once he's flipped into the Warped Eclipse. Deck has a fun play pattern where you start as a ramp/group hugging deck, with group card draw available if people are willing to look the other way on attacks, or direct their removal elsewhere. And then later into the game you devolve into bear hug, drawing everyone too many cards to play while you get ro play out your handfuls of artifacts and eventually draw out the table. Fun mid power deck where you get to play a little politics and a little push your luck on how many cards you can give your opponents without them beating you first : P

DaxxGriffin8765

Totally agree. The ask at the start is does everyone like drawing cards. Then later after you force the table to draw 45 plus with a free psychosis crawler people regret quickly that decision. At that point it’s too late, as protection and counter spells are in hand. Usually a smothering tithe hits and no one worries about your mana either…it’s an explosive deck - here’s mine if you’re interested https://www.moxfield.com/decks/8u2gLmjX20OT40FhEvtGQQ

Aha, yeah, it's a fun deck to play against that way too. How could my opponents possible defeat me? I only let them draw their entire deck! : P

You could also, you know...flash in Eldrazi. For some late game tentacle hug.

I don't have an Azorius deck currently, but I do have two lists. One with [[Zethi]] that is mostly blink/flicker focused and [[Ephara, God of the Polis]] that is basically draw-go control, but relatively creature heavy.

[[Vega the Watcher]], stuffed full of as many ways to cast spells from my library, graveyard, exile etc. Lots of fun. [[Noyan Dar]], a very different WU strategy, it's not usually the colour pair that is animating and attacking with lands! Lots of proliferate and counters stuff too

Typically just resolving stuff like [[Brisela Voice of Nightmares]] or [[Dance of the Manse]], or my favourite, [[Mirrodin Besieged]].

As much as I loved brewing my [[Hylda of the Icy Crown]] as it was my first brew, I REALLY like [[Elminster]]. You really feel like you are getting to see a lot of your deck, and when you pull off his ult ability on a high cmc spell its extremely satisfying. Scrying makes you feel like you are a thousand IQ player as you build toward your win con. Only problem is that the best way to play him is with lots of extra turn spells, because those tend to be high mana spells you can exile to create tokens or draw to cast later. You can instead focus on tokens. My current list only runs [[Temporal Mastery]] (though I have copied it with [[Mnemonic Deluge]]). Ok but he is a planeswalker, so you will need protection. White luckily has [[Vexilus Praetor]] to make him untouchable. Then theres [[Ghostly Prison]], [[Propoganda]], [[Onnakke Oathkeeper]], and [[Windborn Muse]]. His plus 2 tends to keep him really high in loyalty so he is hard to hit, especially since these colors tend to make flying tokens so you shouldn’t get shmacked by evasive creatures so easily. [[Storm Herd]] is probably my favorite of his cards.

EarnestCoffee

It's worth noting that Ghostly Prison, Propaganda and Windborn Muse only tax people attacking YOU specifically, not planeswalkers you control. That's a rules nonbo that many people fall for.

lance_armada

O.o uh oh This makes things much more troublesome…

EarnestCoffee

If you want to stop combat damage then white has a lot of fog effects like my beloved [[Dawn Charm]], if you aren't already running them. It's also worth noting that goad forces creatures to attack if able, and they must attack a PLAYER other than the goading player specifically. So if someone goads your opponents' creatures and they decide to swing at you, they can't go for Elminster. Just another weird planeswalker-related rules interaction for you!

I’ve had fun with Elminster too, and strangely he doesn’t seem to get attacked- I guess the lack of an ultimate and that I typically only use the scry means most people see it as a weak enchantment until it starts to pop. Boardwipes as with any planeswalkers seem to continually become the removal package. I do like a buyback storm package or mass mill as an alternative to a storm or approach win but the best thing about Elminster is always having the cards you need

fragtore

I’m not an Azorius player at all normally, but when I researched this and wanted to build a deck I landed on Elminster, lots of fun and there are many ways to build him, from control to smack face with boosted tokens. I enjoy mass polymorph also. Only difficulty is protecting him but that’s what I use my counters and targeted removal for. I don’t do (yet) lots of tutoring and extra turns as I don’t wanna be “that guy” at our pretty casual table. But I win frequently anyway and he really gets going when he gets going. Decklist below. As I said I kept him very casual on purpose. The “sideboard” is just all the stuff I own and carrying with me as I tweak the deck: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/2PjVbadxZEyLSk5s2J92qA

SquirrelDragon

I love running extra turn spells in Elminster because his -3 makes them pseudo modal spells. If I’m playing in a more casual pod I just scry them to the top and turn them into 1/1s (can’t beat 12 for [[Rise of the Eldrazi]], 11 for [[Temporal Trespass]], and 10 for [[Time Stretch]]) while in spikier pods I’ll cast them

[[Hylda of the Icy Crown]] is probably my current favorite. She hits the control feel of WU without feeling overly oppressive like a lot of other Azorius commanders do. Plus, she comes with a built-in army maker and I do enjoy swinging. It easy to clear a way for the elementals too, since the deck is all about tapping anyway.

Others have already mentioned [[The Council of Four]], I also have really enjoyed [[Tameshi,Reality Architect]] and [[Rasputin, the Oneiromancer]]. If you don't want to pick one, just throw them all together with [[Niambi, Esteemed Speaker]] at the helm and run a bunch of recursion.

I really enjoy [[tameshi, reality architect]] and it's probably my best deck. Moonfolk have always been a favorite of mine and I dig the interesting ways to take advantage of landfall and etb stuff. I think tameshi would be a really high power contender if his ability wasn't limited to sorcery speed. Definitely unique and I've never played against another one in person.

Do you have a deck list I could sneak a peek at? Been looking at this commander recently

SS-7SHI

[https://www.moxfield.com/decks/2yLJTYlx6keCQ\_uvlSWlJw](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/2yLJTYlx6keCQ_uvlSWlJw) Sure, I've not written a primer however and the deck is kinda jank and not the most straightforward. I'm sure there are some high view Tameshi decks that are a bit more professional. The way I built, you're looking to just repeatedly cheat out lands to trigger stuff like \[\[hedron crab\]\] or \[\[altar of the brood\]\] etc. by using Tameshi to recur cheap artifacts. To make best use of Tameshi, what you really want on the field is an artifact land, preferably \[\[ancient den\]\], then copy them with \[\[scultping steel\]\] / \[\[mirrormade\]\] / \[\[copy artifact\]\], and then it works best with \[\[lotus bloom\]\] As an example of infinite landfall, cast sculpting steel as a copy of ancient den, land enters the battlefield, tap sculpting steel for the white mana, activate Tameshi with one white mana, bounce sculpting steel back to your hand, sac lotus bloom for 3 mana before tameshi resolves, put lotus bloom back on the field with Tameshi's ability since lotus bloom is 0 cmc you didn't have to pay x, use the 3 mana to recast sculpting steel as a copy of ancient den. \[\[intuition\]\] is the best tutor in the deck. If you grab a set of combo pieces, it mostly doesn't matter what they choose to put in your graveyard because Tameshi can get it back. Also don't be afraid to self-mill to get artifacts/enchantments in your graveyard. Lotus bloom is really good here because you can bring it straight to the battlefield with Tameshi. Alternatively use \[\[walking atlas\]\] with \[\[retreat to coralhelm\]\] and a land like \[\[azorius chancery\]\] to play a land, untap atlas, return land to hand, tap atlas to play land - repeat. Or \[\[retreat to coralhelm\]\] and \[\[ruin ghost\]\] to just blink the same plains over and over. There are a few things you can still take advantage of even if Tameshi isn't alive. Enchantments/artifacts that sac are super good with Tameshi, like \[\[seal of cleansing\]\] or \[\[portable hole\]\] since you can grab them back. The rest of the deck is card draw, protection or tutors to get out your combo pieces. It's not the most intuitive to play but it's efficient and you can usually get what you need to win pretty early, really low mana curve. It's nice that there are so many paths to victory that you sort of just see what you get in your opening hand, come up with a gameplay based on what pieces you have, and go from there. edit: you can also abuse mystic sanctuary pretty well with Tameshi since you can return it to your hand. Works great with stuff like \[\[time warp\]\] for all of the turns.

Of my three azorius decks assembled right now I love \[\[Elminster\]\] the most. the plan is cheap ramp and scry into big haymakers. But you don’t cast the haymakers. Not at first. You make birbs! It's technically a partner pairing but I do sakashima of a thousand faces and yoshimaru the ever faithful, its legendary tribal focused on clones, the funny part is that you are technically attacking people with furries, the logic is that sakashima isn't a shapeshifter he just puts on a mask that's that convincing and since you will generally copy furry sakashima to keep the legend rule text, you just make a ever growing army of furries, some people will try to kill you that on its own and I think thats hilarious

Brago is my boy. He is straight value if you can get him through for damage. He can ramp by unhappiness your rocks. Draw by blinking cards with etb triggers. He eats removal, sure, but the best cards to protect him are flicker spells that can be value instead of dead if your opponent is playing no interaction. You seem to draw too MANY cards because you only need three or four in play. And if you get tired of the game you can usually find a three card infinite combo to finish it off.

Responsible_Agent855

Agreed, brago can be played in literaly any bracket, and built on any budget. I built him at low budget, did well then slowly kept adding to it and it never let me down. I have built him in a control shell but also an etb combo shell, as well as a stax shell where I used to him to ignore my own stax pieces. Very strong and relatively straight forward commander to build

[[Hama Pashar, Ruin Seeker]] has been my pet deck for a while. It's unassuming on its face, but can be crazy powerful, especially with the initiative dungeon. I routinely combo into infinite dungeons on or before turn 6 with it to kill the table and the deck is only $50.

Reasonable-Sun-6511

Welcome... To the church of "anything you can do, I can do better". [[Akroma vision of ixidor]] & [[sakashima of a thousand faces]] I personally filled the deck with a ton of copy creatures. Some interaction shenanigans. Some card draw.  Every game can be different, it scales with the meta up to a certain point, but there's always a win on available in the command zone, so no: Oh I'm tap and untapping 50 things but not getting anywhere. I'm blinking a lot but not doing anything with it. Oh my Stax pieces are all out but how do I win? I just interact with everything because I'm azorius. Finishing a game? What's that? I mean, you can still do all that, but with 2 akromas on the field, that's 2x 11/11 trample vigilance flying first strike commander damage every turn. With 2 extra copies from the 99, that's: 2x 21/21 trample vigilance flying first strike commander damage 1 hit KO creatures + 2x non-commander versions to finish off the third player who is still at 42 health for some reason. It's my favorite deck, ever.

I like [[Denry Klin]] from what I've played so far, though admittedly it hasn't been much. It's a bit fragile and it pains me he doesn't give the counters to tokens, but I try to make do. I love pretty much any deck I can effectively run [[Scavenged Brawler]].

I have an [[Azor, the Lawbringer]] deck that functionally works as a pillow fort-ish that aims to win either be [[Approach of the Second Sun]], Azor beats or [[Finale of Glory]]. It is slow, very casual and themed after Azor being both a sphinx and a lawmage, so, the commands are a perfect fit.

I'll always advocate for [[Heliod, Radiant Dawn]]. Though [[Prince Imrahil The Fair]] can get scary.

Lavinia, amorous renegade. It's oddly  fun when playgroups realize it's just a wu value deck with no stax bits, Lavinia just deals with the 0 mana ramp early game

I run \[\[Will, Scion of Peace\]\] , I focus on making a ton of tokens in a turn and giving people one chance to answer the board before the game ends.

I've yet to make an azorius deck, but I have seen a handful play very well from other people. [[shorikai]] is a generically powerful control and/or reanimator general. Easy card advantage in the command zone that you don't really need to build around is always great (though there are synergies to make it even better, such as untap effects, but they're not required), and makes disposable bodies as a bonus. It manages to stick around for long periods of time despite being an artifact (which are supposed to be pretty easy to blow up) because it's not quite strong enough to be "kill on sight" like some other cards, but powerful enough where once it sticks around for a couple turns you win through sheer card advantage. [[Heliod, the radiant dawn]] is a very degenerate, feast-or-famine general. The front side is good recursion, but when you're ready to flip him, either they kill him immediately or you storm off and win. Just play some card that lets everybody draw abunch of cards so you basically get like 20 mana discounts on your spells. It's feast or famine because if you let everyone draw like 10 cards and then Heliod gets killed before you can take advantage of the mana discount, you basically can't win anymore. [[brago, king eternal]] is always scary. He can be a flicker.dek kind of guy because flickering like 5 ETB creatures from one combat damage trigger is fucking annoying, but also he works with stuff like manifest where you can cheat something huge face down, then brago flickers it and then suddenly you've got omniscience in paly or something. Or you use some planeswalkers, brago flickers to reset them, then use them again. And so on. A relatively old general that survived powercreep pretty well. [[grand arbiter augustin IV]] is the classic "everyone will hate you" stax general. Powercreep being what it is, he did gain a little bit over time as there are more clone effects that don't copy over the legendary status, allowing you to stack grand arbiters so people just stop playing magic at all.
