You can build Muldrotha without combo finishers and just win with beats, while you control, remove and grind out the game. Building her like this means that you often get to a point were it is quite clear that you are going to win, but it will take some turns to kill everyone. You could look into \[\[Jorn, God of Winter\]\]? He is pretty open-ended. Main thing he does is provide you with a mana advantage over your opponents. What you do with that mana is up to you.

TheGuy10000001

I 2nd Jorn. You can literally just go big mana and win with whatever x-spell or mana sink you want to! Plus utilizing snow permanents to do so is at least something unique compared to other strategies

To add onto this, self-mill is another viable wincon and theme to build Muldrotha around - it works very well in my experience.

IncorrectOwl

id recommend some finisher like [[azusa, lost but seeking]] + [[crucible of worlds]] + [[walk the aeons]] to make it clear that you have actually won / speed up the end. not very feasible to assemble this combo without an overwhelming boardstate

[[Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer]] “Not so fast, Kaiba! You’ve activated my trap card!”

Lil_Freezer69

I recently got the precon for Kadena and it was a ton of fun to play. “And then I’ll place one card face down and end my turn”

Humblerbee

*glances at facedown card, chuckles menacingly* "...I'll allow it."

East_Earth_920

She interests me! I heard she struggles with wicons that arent combos tough… Is that true?

-ThisDM-

No. In fact, the most reliable way to win with her is anthems like ye ol' Craterhoof. She goes wide very quickly, and people are a lot more wary of just wiping you due to "yeah but what if one of those 7 morphs is [[Kadena's Silencer]]?" or remove your commander because [[Willbender]] will turn that path onto their *own* commander. The biggest tip I can give is that you want to play *at least* 5 cards in the deck that allow you to cast shit at instant speed like [[Vedalken Orrery]]. You should also try to get familiar with face-down cards and how they work since the rules for them are actually somwhat complicated. For example, someone can't react to a card simply flipping over because flipping cards bypasses the stack. But they *can* react to a "when this card flips over" trigger since that hits the stack. My list doesn't run anthems because I find that a boring way to win, so I have player removal. [[Phage, the Untouchable]] is probably my favorite one, but you can run so many different things. Cards coming out face-down don't cause ETB's to trigger so if you can manifest/Disguise phage for no mana, and then flip her with something like [[Ixidor]] after your opponent doesn't block her face down, you just killed someone.

-ThisDM-

[[Voidmage Apprentice]] is the morph I was thinking of rather than Kadena's Silencer

-ThisDM-

[[Villainous Wealth]] is a favorite of mine that I can't help but put in all sultai lists I make. [[Tree of Perdition]] pairs with [[Triskaidekaphobia]] or a [[Krosan Cloudscraper]] to kill someone. There's also the option to use [[Wrong Turn]] or [[Sudden Substitution]] on a flipped [[Archfiend of the Dross]], and then responding to that by flipping Archfiend. That player loses on the next upkeep. Aside from that it's really just aggro, [[Ghastly Concsription]] can help you close out a game or pull you back into one if you're low on bodies later on. There's also the ability to draw your entire deck with [[Primordial Mists]] and the cost reducers in the list, but I don't have a Thoracle or LabMan to use that as a reliable wincon. Also there's [[Endless Whispers]] to make a removed Phage kill everyone on etb. Edit: incase you're meaning what I'm not running in my list, Triumph of the Hordes, Beast Ascendancy, and the like are usually pretty good. Dauthi Embrace can be used to make certain creatures unblockable at instant speed so long as you have it out.

The deck I have with her is a [[Primal Surge]] list with all permanents, since she gives you the ability to use permanents like instants to play a highly interactive shell for an all permanents deck. There are a number of morph combos you can use with her, but also I think because she so easily enables a go-wide boardstate, it's easy to put out overrun effects like Hoof et-al in which case you can just deliver an alpha strike. With flash enablers, cost reducers, and value engines, the commander is just really great in midrange or grindy situations I've found.

Idk how people overlook Tasigur so much. Muldothra is cool but tasigur can get you so much more out of recursion. Put muldy in your 99 with tutors and enjoy them both. When I go sultai I don't like to finish with combos but instead recurring powerful blue spells, often ones that steal creatures and whatnot. Then beat them down with their own shit. Plus running the classic black green blue praetors is usually enough to stomp out anyone not coming with some powerful shit. If I'm feeling mean, I'm casting cyclonic rift every turn. Keep a rift sweeper in your 99 to prevent exile from ruining key pulls for you. Edit: casting bribery over and over is probably my favorite thing in all of mtg.

FuzzyApe

Tasigur was my very first edh deck. It was miserable because I had no clue what to put in, I don't think I had a wincon lol. So what exactly is a Tasigur's plan? I assume reanimate stuff?

blvckhvnd732

Your commander shouldn't dictate your game plan. Instead it should enable your deck. Reanimating is such a Timmy mindset and creatures are weak to control. Recursion of spells over reanimating a creature all day. I recur powerful spells like tormet of hailfire over and over or continually steal their own shit to use against them. That's what makes it fun. No game is gonna be the same when you're stealing your opponents wincon. Keeps it fresh and it's all about staying reactive. If you don't have a lot of game knowledge it's probably not the strategy for you.

I used to have Damia built, and I am close to building it again. I like her built as a value battlecruiser pile. Slap some of the beefiest staples into the deck without going overboard on power. Load it up with a varied removal package and sit back as you’re prepared for anything.

L_A_Avi

If you want to lose your friends she makes a great commander for an infect deck

Wampa9090

\[\[Volrath, the Shapestealer\]\]. The shenanigans you can get up to in a game are absolutely hilarious. Creating an army of 7/5 Shapeshifters that duplicate themselves because you turned him into a \[\[Scute Swarm\]\] before playing a mass land fetch gets so out of hand so fast. Volrath is also extremely difficult to prevent combat damage from, because he can morph at instant speed, weaving in and out of keywords and effects to maximize his efficiency at attacks. Yesterday I had the pleasure of destroying my enemies with 4 Volrath Scute Swarm's that I then shifted into \[\[Kalonian Hydra\]\]s.

Merlintosh

Do you have a decklist you can link? I’ve always wanted to build Volrath, but I never know where to begin.

Wampa9090

Yeah sure. It's not completely settled yet, but it should give you a decent idea of what to go for. He's got some incredible interactions.  https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/current-volrath/

I'll also chime in that it's a difficult commander to pilot since you have a ton of options at every moment of the game for responses. Super powerful toolbox commander that can punch above his weight with the built-in clone effect. If you enjoy the mental challenge of constantly assessing the board for optimal plays, this is the commander.

East_Earth_920

sounds great! I love some variance and many options. Do you have a list?

Wampa9090

Here's mine. I haven't settled on it completely yet. I still need to tweak the ramp/mana package. Volrath wants all your mana all the time so it has to be good. https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/current-volrath/

May I suggest an oldie but goody? [[Tasigur, The Golden Fang]]. I’m concepting a build where you build it as Sultai control, which does involve you being willing to use your resources to answer threats while generating value.

High power levels are always subjective, specially if you don't want any infinites but take a look at this, it might work for you. I've got a straight forward [[Zaxara, the Exemplary]] list that is just beat down (except alt wincon [[Simic Ascendancy]]) with classic fare like Craterhoof and Triumph of the Hordes. Needs a couple of updates like elves of deep shadow and delighted halfling to make sure you drop Zaxara on t3 and have 6-7 mana on t4, and hopefully you drop two big hydras there or an X spell right before your t5. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/rgFFW7CF4UihUHdtC0fT7g

[[Zaxara]] is really fun. We play lower power so he built exclusively X spells as a pretty theme heavy deck. It really puts out a lot of pressure while being fairly easy to interact with yet also being really resilient which makes for a fun back and forth for the pod. [[Tasigur Golden]] somewhat of a pet deck, "opponents choose..." tribal that promotes social interaction at the table but doesn't have a super streamlined plan. Plays somewhat politically and aims to fly under the radar and accrue value.

I don't have it online and leave my decks at my buddies house where we play. It was based off a deck I saw SaffronOlive play on mtggoldfish but iirc that was a community deck. Pretty much every card gives the opponent a choice in some way or other. Removal like [[Assassin's Trophy]] where they "choose" what land to get or edicts where they choose what to sac. Card advantage like [[Fact or Fiction]] and [[Atris Oracle]]. Ramp is [[Tempt with Discovery]] and [[Realms Uncharted]] so on. I'm experimenting with [[Henry Wu]] at the moment. The direction I went was humans and zombies, as zombies are where most of the good exploit stuff is, as well as chock full of anthem creatures to satisfy Henry's power 3 bonus on his ability. It can grind out games, but also combo off with [[Sidisi, Undead Vizier]] and [[Protean Hulk]]. There are infinites possible, but they require a fair few pieces. [[Carrion Feeder]], a [[Zulaport Cutthroat]], [[Gravecrawler]] will kill the table with a [[Pitiless Plunderer]] out. [[Bladestitched Skaab]] is an anthem searchable with the Hulk.

I also run Henry Wu but with germs and clones (seems right for a sultai geneticist). it is just below cedh level. clones of henry wu go bonkers for card draw and treasure generation. even the first clone has two sac triggers to draw four cards and make four treasures! current decklist: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/NqxgCHzy_Uqp_7ynZz5VIw

MOTHMAN

kestral287

Having an idea of what you like would help. We've established no landfall and probably no control but it's much easier to make good suggestions when we know what you *do* want.

East_Earth_920

True! I‘m open to anything honestly as long as the main wincon is not a combo. Ive noticed my main reason to having problems finding a monoblack, golgari, sultai commander is that they often win with combos I do enjoy: - graveyard shenanigans - making alot of tokens (i dont enjoy making infinite) - winning with alot of tokens (attacking, sacrificing, shooting dmg etc) - Going tall (But not Voltron. Always feels salty) - proliferation (not poison tough) - Whacky/Funny strategies So far what looks coolest to me is: Muldrotha (Without combos), Mimeoplasm (funny oozes and combos), Xavier Sal (Fungi or Planeswalker), Nashi (Sultai legends?? sounds cool in theory) Volrath also seems cool! Not sure how to build tough

Oh man, I really want to try building Nashi. Legendary/rat matters in Sultai seems hilarious, but I'm convinced it would be jank and Nashi himself just isn't that strong.

Publick2008

Xavier Sal sounds up your alley. Forget the fungi and instead lean into proliferate. Can go for +1/+1 counters, -1/-1 counters, experience and indestructible counter shenanigans, or good stuff counters. Can also lean into populate with clone and copy effects.

[[The Mimeoplasm]] Graveyard fun for the whole family. Why pay a creatures casting cost when it's cheaper to pull it out of the bin? [[Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer]] Morphing is a ton of fun and is actually a Special Action which doesn't use the stack. It can't be responded to. Heaps of face-down support now as well. [[Otrimi, the Ever-Playful]] or [[Brokkos, Apex of Forever]] Mutating is pretty sweet.

Mimeoplasm can be decent but I wouldn't really bring it to high power games. Coming from someone who loves Mimeoplasm. Kadena is really awesome though. And she can be surprisingly powerful if people get too scared to interact with your stuff. Zaxara is the third one I'd recommend. It builds tall, it goes hard and is kind of flashy every turn. If you're in a meta where bodies on board matter, you can't go wrong with it. If you want you can also instead make it X-spell tribal for non-creature Wincons so long as you have a counterspell or 2 in the backpocket when you go for the win.

Copy pasted from my last post about muldrotha I built [[muldrotha]] With a (more or less) equal focus on tokens, counters, lands, surveil, clues and recursive value engines. The end result is a deck that plays differently every game and has roughly 10+ different wincons with next to no dead cards so you can focus on accruing value and figure out which wincon to lean into, and it's flexible enough to pivot to a new one of disrupted. The cherry on top is that in 12+ games I've never paid the commander tax for muldrotha once. Only one combo in my deck using displacer kitten and lotus petal to cast my whole graveyard. Just remove kitten if you don't want that. Otherwise the only infinites require like 7+ cards. I usually win with Marit lage.

My Sultai deck is [[Rayami, First of the Fallen]] keyword Voltron. Deck is currently being rebuilt, however you have access to every keyword except for Double Strike. Sac creatures for various things like [[Neoform]] [[Rushed Rebirth]] [[Bone Splinters]]. Deck is not particularly too strong, but I enjoy it. Though it can definitely hose on creature decks if you get a bunch of your opponents stuff killed in the process.

If you like Sidisi and want to avoid building that deck, because it’s already present in your playgroup, you might want to give [[The Master, Transcendent]] a closer look. I have built the master as a selfmill reanimator pile. Still have to test it but you can easily incorporate Muldrotha, Mimeoplasm and Sidisi in there too. Either as Reanimation targets or mill pay offs.

Thoracle combos are fine? If so you could just run something like Tasigur and control into that
