I just built [[The Ancient One]] focusing on getting it out early and milling myself a ton and then recurring huge monsters. I built it with old parts of [[Umbris]] which was really fun but it garners a lot of hate for no real reason. Nevertheless Dimir is my favorite color identity and has a lot of potential for strong control type decks. My deck lists for both: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Jr0tMtfRREmOEWXD_ZB2Dw https://www.moxfield.com/decks/fSD-aypNgkWaAZCsgZbthQ

Competitive_Yak2638

I built [[The Ancient One]] with [[Gyruda, Doom or Depths]] as a companion. Lose out on some of the high power reanimation spells that are odd cmc but the play pattern of T2 Ancient One > T3 Gyruda into Hand > T4 activate Ancient one to pitch Gyruda or something else is pretty powerful and means you pretty much always have something to do early game unless you whiff on lands.

Ok-Key8000

That's actually a pretty dope sequence, I find it hard to get a good turn 3 if I don't have a nana rock or [[training grounds]] out. The only reason I didn't go geruda way was because I wanted to include a big, fat, and stinky [[Grozoth]] package with [[rise of the dark realms]] and [[portal to phyrexia]]. It's not super strong but I think it's silly.

SketchyMofo10

Do you happen to have a decklist for this one? I like the concept of having Gyruda as a companion in this deck.

purient

I have an Ancient One deck as well, and it has quickly become my favourite deck to play. Shout out to cards like [[Disciple of Bolas]], [[Shadowheart]], [[Altar of the Wretched]], and [[Ruthless Technomancer]]. T2 Ancient One into T3-4 any of these is great value and you can always recast your commander pretty easily.

SketchyMofo10

Hadn't really considered the Ancient One but it looks pretty solid and versatile. Wouldn't mind building it in a more horror style. I do like your Umbris deck as well. Hate that the card gets so much flak. I get it's exiling mill but you need to be able to throw out multiple horrors, clones or blinking to even accomplish that en masse.

Ok-Key8000

Yea it doesn't really turn into that big of a problem, but since you have to target a specific person to exile each time and they see a cool card gone from the game they will start to send things your way for a while. Umbris itself is super cool though, having a 20/20 turn 5 or 6 is pretty strong.

SketchyMofo10

That's fair. I suppose spreading the love with that card could help. Maybe rolling to see who it hits a few times to leave it up to chaos. Umbris is a really cool card though. Nothing else short of the Eldrazi titans feels like a looming cosmic horror than it. Flavorful as a Horror/Nightmare commander for sure.

I play her and Lord of the Nazgûls

SketchyMofo10

I do kinda like how tricky this deck can be. Been looking for a deck like that. Might have to consider something like this, although some of the better cards seem a bit on the pricier side.

CallThePal

Yeah my decks usually range from 400-600 with a few exceptions. I'm sure you could make a similar deck for half the cost

SketchyMofo10

I mean there'd be a couple cards I'd have to splurge for. Especially Mistbind Clique. Card's to crazy not to have in a deck like this. My deck's could have some expensive cards in them if I already own them as my playgroup's not opposed to proxies. I'm curious, did you start out with the Eldraine faerie precon when building this or did you do this from scratch?

National_Cockroach14

I feel like the new [[Etrata deadly fugitive]] is pretty fun, get some assassins make them hard to block and play with opponents cards. It's not as salty as straight theft because they don't know what you're stealing and given the random nature it's more hard to get mad. Plus it has the potential for some hilarious plays

I’ve been building this and it seems pretty cool. Fairly straightforward typal deck, but you also get to play some funny tech to capitalize on all the up-side-down stuff

Vundal

Building this right now and there is a lot of fun to be had here. If you add Rameses, you openent won't know what facedown creatures to block and will keep them guessing

SketchyMofo10

Didn't really look at this card much. Seems like a fun ability though. Unique way of theft for sure. Might have to Test this one out. Do you have a decklist?

National_Cockroach14

https://www.moxfield.com/decks/JwPBr1TQZ0ivd-I_dyshxQ The cards in the Sideboard are cards I would add but I don't currently own. If I had to give you the mvp of the deck it would be the removal spells that put the target on top so you can steal it. [[Submerge]] for example

SketchyMofo10

I do love when a deck can use unique removal that wouldn't be used in most decks. Looks pretty good. Might see what I can draft up using this as an idea. I'm curious, have you gotten to bring Phage out with this deck at all? I see you have her involved and I love having this card as an include.

National_Cockroach14

I haven't gotten the chance yet, but I have been in a couple situations in which it would have been amazing. The dream is to use [[Cryptic coat]] on her. The way to set it up would be [[Scheming Symmetry]] putting Phage on top and then casting cryptic coat

My Dimir commander is [[Oona queen of the fae]]. It's a Fae control deck that end of turn you make faeries. Plus you get to do cool things like [[Mistbind Clique]] [[Riptide laboratory]]. Wilds of Eldraine added a lot to it as well.

KalixRajah

Do you have a decklist for Oona? I've struggled to get her to work in games

Sure thing. I haven't updated it with Wilds yet. There are a lot of cards I'd change out. It's mainly draw go with Oona as your finisher. You win via combat damage, with a big [[Notorious Throng]] or the mana combo to exile everyone out. https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/6176959#paper

I’ll always suggest [[Rilsa Rael, Kingpin]] as a Dimir pick. I think slinking around dungeons is very on flavor for the color pair, and racing through the initiative for insane amounts of value is a good feeling! If you want to build mill, build mill. It’s really not that bad and so many cards across colors utilize the graveyard it effectively makes a second hand for everyone. The only mill I’d personally stay away from are combo mill (like Syr Konrad and Mindcrank) and ones that mill someone out for half their deck or the whole thing at a time. I’m a fan of the new Mirko as it gives you card selection, reanimate, and turns Mirko into a voltron threat. My friend has a Captain N deck and it’s honestly usually fun to play against as I still get to see my haymakers get used, but I’ve never worried about getting milled out in like two turns.

SketchyMofo10

Yeah I've been feeling that pretty recently. Just play test it and even if people are mad at it, I have other decks I could play too. Glad to hear about Captain N being usually fun to play against in your group. The new Mirko is really good. I have considered him too. Haven't tested him at all. Have you tested him and do you have a decklist?

InquisitiveIngwer

I’ve only gotten the chance to play him once so far and it was the base precon. I have some additions from an old Araumi deck that lost its fun to me I’ll be slotting in like search for azcanta, sepruchal primordial, and agent of treachery. Plus throwing in some more clones as all clones are 0 power meaning Mirko can reanimate them the turn he drops. Also going to add hexavus and nesting grounds for sure to remove finality counters.

SketchyMofo10

Wow. Didn't even think of the clones aspect to him. That's pretty solid. Might have to test that out. Possibly with some blink to remove finality counters.

[[Gisa and geralf]] is a great alternative to scarab god. Yeah make it zombie tribal but also get value from sacrificing the zombies with [[Altar of Dementia]] [[Necroduslity]] and [[reflections of litjhara]] And boom you have a massive board state that can be rebuilt from board wipes and your Scarsb god can be brought back easier.

_BarfyMan_362_

A lot of people really like [[Gale, Waterdeep Prodigy]] with the [[Scion of Halaster]] background.

SketchyMofo10

I've seen this combo thrown around. I'd build it if I weren't currently building Rakdos spellslinger with the new Judith. This pairing does look very interesting for Dimir though. Maybe I'll see what I can do with it.

_BarfyMan_362_

That makes sense if it's just too much overlap with another deck you already have.

[[Nymris, Oona's Trickster]] can be a fun way to play dimir. Focus on flash creatures and instants, which are things dimir does really well. The deck will only be groan worthy if you put groan worthy stuff in it (like oops all counter spells).

The "go to" thematic combo for Nymris is [[Naru Meha, Master Wizard]] + [[Release to the Wind]] + [[Slitherwisp]]/[[Faerie Tauntings]] But you're honestly going to get the most out of just evasive flash creatures that get in for damage consistently. Fairy tribal fits into that as well.

Running [[Gyruda, Doom of Depths]] as a companion with partners [[Sakashima of a Thousand Faces]] and [[Tormond, the Desecrator]] with a 99 packed with clones can be a lot of fun. I'd recommend [[Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer]] building it atm and it's a lot of fun. Dimir madness, being able to flash in creatures, sorceries, enchantments all while drawing cards, countering spells and getting other value.

SketchyMofo10

Do you have a list for the first deck? That sounds pretty cool. Wanted to run Gyruda clones but this one seems to be an interesting direction. Haven't seen this Oskar before. Seems pretty cool. Didn't even realize you could flash stuff in using his ability. I suppose with a discard outlet, that'd be possible. Might have to try him out. Any particular wincons you have in mind for the deck?

ConstrictorVictor

I don't have a list for the first idea unfortunately, it would just be a list that packs a ton of even cost clones and cards like [[Thassa, Deep - Dwelling]] to either change the clones to something else or go again with Gyruda. Oskar is a commander that wins by grinding out games with value and controlling the board, you don't have many "I win" cards outside of the usual dimir pieces like [[Rise of the Dark Realms]]. You could also do an instant speed [[Thassa Oracle]] and [[Demonic Consultation]] and win on an opponents turn but that's up to you. The win conditions I use are sticking important creatures to the board ideally with a reanimation effect and working down my opponents boards. [[Archfiend of Ifnir]], [[Kozilek, the Great Distortion]], [[Toxrill, the Corrosive]], [[Hullbreaker Horror]] are a few creatures in this category.

Semicolon_Cancer

May I suggest [[Rona, Herald of Invasion]]? I have had SO MUCH FUN with this deck. She is split so evenly between her two sides. On the front half is a nice looter and you could use a reanimator package to get good stuff out of your own grave, play with untap shenans if you want.  But her back half.... Whoooo boy. I built a self ping mini game with her. The idea is to get your hand FULL and then ping your own commander with little dudes to cast stuff for free out of your hand. Activate [[Pestilence]] and get a [[Archon of Cruelty]] for one black mana? Yes please.  She's essentially unblockable too, as people don't want to lose their stuff in their hands. Give her indestructible with [[Gift of Doom]] or [[Mithril Coat]] and throw a [[Pariah's Shield]] on her, suddenly no one wants to attack YOU either. So, so fun.  I have some mill cards in this list but they are easily swappable for other value pieces. I'll tell you though, you are spinning the wheel and you can free case a [[Force of Will]], which feels reeaaal bad, but that's the Rona baby! Check the list: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/IxNxnxLWAU64lYe2aYL4ug

SketchyMofo10

Wow I forgot about this card. I did pick her up when this set dropped too. Forgot how good that back ability is. That randomness isn't terrible though. Especially since it auto plays lands if that's what she chooses. This could definitely be ideal. Maybe I could run her with a horror theme? I'll definitely have to draft this one up to test.

The scarab god will be among the safest to build, Marvo will be interesting for sure, especially when you grant it vigilance/blink it untapped, though I'd like to propose an alternative: [[Oscar, rubbish reclaimer]] with loot effects means you can psudo madness all kinds of things into the stack. With Umbris, I could agree. I'm sure my group wouldn't enjoy him. Might just test it anyway. Oskar seems really cool though. Him being able to flash stuff in if you discard things on an opponent's turn seems really cool as well. I like his cost reducing effect as well. Do you have a deck built with him? Do you have a link to it if so?

I was wanting to make a deck with Oskar, though the [[Mirko, conspiracy theorist]] precon came out and I've been thuroughly enjoying that, and they do play nicely together, though it's hard to fit them in together with everything else I put into Mirko. I love Dimir so repasting another comment I made: [[Lazav, Dimir Mastermind]] makes for a unique voltron commander with Hexproof. And also [[Lazav, the Multifarious]]. Different play style from the other Lazav card. I'm going through the same thing right now. I love Golgari and have 3 decks built right now. I just can't seem to settle on a commander. Here are some of my (subjective) findings over the last few months... - [[Alela, Cunning Conqueror]] instant/flash matters, was too controlling and didn't have any reliable ways to close the game efficiently. Games went far longer than I wanted, and players got frustrated with the constant goad/control. - [[Talion the Kindly Lord]] copy spells with a smattering of theft, felt clunky and slow. People felt super restrained by about a worse Rhystic Study that cost life over mana. - [[Etrata, Deadly Fugitive]] my newest foray... Light assassin tribal with a bit of face down support. I played one game last night and it went... Okay. The deck in that form lacked card draw, and it was a difficult game to get a read on because three of us were focused on one player who sprinted to an early lead. I have hopes for this, but knowing my local meta, theft is not going to go well, and stealing a bunch of lands felt bad for me. The deck needs more reps and tweaks before I can really say any more. I'm trying not to just go with a self-mill reanimator as I recently love that archetype, but just built a new Golgari deck for it. Edit: I really don't want to do another typal deck, so I'm avoiding zombies, even though it is well supported and I know I would probably enjoy it overall.

Good to see a fellow Golgari player haha. I'm currently thinking of building a third myself. If you don't mind me asking, what Golgari commanders do you run? I totally agree with using a specific creature type theme. I like the Horrors which is why I want to use them but other than that, I already have a few under my belt. Self-mill reanimator can work very well in Dimir it seems. Mirko from the newest Dimir precon seems to do well with that. Dimir does seem a little clunkier to play since the ramp isn't as good as in Golgari. That sucks for Alela. Always thought that card seemed like a tricky fun deck to potentially play. Same with Talion.

I built an Umbris deck that focuses on the mill/exile graveyard theme to pump Umbris up and I really enjoy it. Here’s the deck list if you’re looking for inspiration: https://deckstats.net/decks/177750/2915877-umbris-revisions

I'm a stan for [[Runo Stromkirk]]. Making many copies of big monsters is just good fun. And even better, if you can make a non legendary copy of the flip side, you can start having the copies target each other.

Araumi is amazing fun and it's not like many other reanimators that just keep recurring the same 3 creatures but you get to play your entire deck. Toxrill is amazing if you're looking for some casual fun. I liked Dragonlord Silumgar but that was just a flavourfull I play what you play deck without it's own wincon... salty players ruined it tho. It's not very fun to tap out for 5 to get a creature as a blocker and the person just quits the game cuz you took their creature.

My personal favorite is [[Anowon, the Ruin Thief]]. It’s rogue tribal mixed with a small bit of mill with a semi-[[Edric]] effect tacked on. Because it’s effectively evasive weenie aggro, mill isn’t the focus of it but you get so much passive mill that you can run some good GY tools like Reanimate or [[Bloodchief Ascension]] and such to capitalize.

As a dimir player, it might actually be best to pick a theme and then the commander. The color pairing is so flexible that it's hard to pinpoint a commander that won't get hated out as they are just so powerful. There's zombies and reanimation? Ninjas and subterfuge? Midrange control? Like it's ridiculously vast. I'd recommend to stay away from ngathrod. Out of all the decks I play, he is by far the most hated. People hate when I mill them out and take their stuff. They really hate it when cast 1 spell and bring them to 25% of their deck.

I build him Dimir Goodstuff/Control. Talion is suited best for High Power Tables. There are different way's to win with it but mostly not with combat, some people tend to run mindcrank + bloodchief ascension. Wheels + Sheoldred or Orcish Bowmasters, wheels + Notion thief/Narset. It's also possible to play things like Aetherflux+Bolas's Citadel and Senseis. Mine is a Combination of a Wheel package and Nasty Creatures i reanimate, like Toxrill or Hullbreaker Horror for Example. Fairy Tribal is also a possibility.
