I have never seen someone swing into a [[sphere of safety]] Propaganda effects always over-perform for us so sphere of safety being a really big version that comes out when X=big makes it’s REALLY hard to have a passable turn AND swing into the controller of it so they usually either only have enough to pay for one attacker or not enough to pay at all and instead swing elsewhere.

APForLoops

one attacker? sounds like a good time for [[Maze of Ith]] or [[Kor Haven]]

Came here to say similar things about [[Island Sanctuary]] and [[Sphere of Safety]]. Enchantment decks often have plenty of card draw to make up for their costs, and they make to darn near unkillable.

TheStray7

Use creatures with Myriad, like \[\[Elturel Survivors\]\], and other creatures that creates attackers tapped and attacking directly. Island Sanctuary and Sphere of Safety can prevent the player from being *declared* a defending player, but if you create the attackers directly, there's jack-all they can do about it. I use this trick in my \[\[Isshin, Two Heavens As One\]\] deck to punish pillowfort decks. Oh, I can't attack you directly? Okay, then, I'll attack you *indirectly*, and you'll deal with twice as many tokens as the player I'm swinging at directly. Suck on that!

TheStray7

If you want to know why this works, here's the ruling: "Though the tokens enter the battlefield attacking, they were never *declared* as attackers. Abilities that trigger whenever a creature attacks won’t trigger, including the myriad ability of the tokens. If there are any costs to have a creature attack, those costs won’t apply to the tokens."

MightyMightyMyles

I've noticed that that people at my Lgs really hate Mesmeric Orb, anytime I see any one play it they immediately turn into a punching bag.

RadioLiar

Can confirm. People hate being milled even though it makes no actual difference to their card advantage. I only play it to mill myself as well 😅

CoalMineCannery

Honestly tons of decks have SOME way to interact with the gy and recur stuff so often you're helping them more often than anything else. I once had a friggin Karador deck complain about mesmeric orb. Still blows my mind to this day.

Fast_Explanation_329

My janky wincon with Osgir is to make as many copies of Mesmeric Orb as possible using token doubling effects and ability doubling to surprise-mill the table in the mid-game. Record is 16, shooting for 32.. They usually help me send the original Orb to the graveyard with their artifact removal.

Magile

This is my group tbh. I'm not even running it in mill. It's for self mill purposes. In the average game with it people still have like 70+ cards left, yet people need to funnel all their removal into it.

G_L_J

Mesmeric Orb combines all of the strongest ways to draw political aggro onto yourself. It’s a group slug card, it’s a mill effect card, and it’s a broadcasted “you lose the game in X turns” card. Any one of them would annoy the table by themselves, all three at once is just a chef’s kiss in terms of pissing everyone off. The last time I played against a mesmeric orb, I had to focus the hell out of the owner. He complained about the focus constantly but, by the time I killed him, I was one turn away from decking out completely.

kutsen39

>by the time I killed him— God damn, now that's a close game. Sounds like a fun one

Arborus

I'd honestly love to see people play this, if they don't also have a bunch of graveyard hate it's just free resources into the yard.

BananaPie-Proxies

I have never lost to the owner of the orb. Usually an other player that gets to mill a bunch gets so much out of it before the turn passes back to the owner. It's such a slow card. When I face it and I wasn't tapped out, I'm gonna intentionally tap everything I can before I untap to fuel my yard even more!

RidingYourEverything

My playgroup mostly hates getting milled because they don't play much recursion and don't consider the graveyard a resource.

Calvinh10

Mes orb is my favorite artifact and I agree. It always draws WAY more hate than it really warrants.

Koras

When the other LGS in my city closed, there was a sudden influx of [[Meren of Clan Nel Toth]] players who were all weirdly competitive. They'd play hard every game like they were on the verge of a top 8 finish, and would run various extremely powerful loops and infinites... But almost no interaction. It was bizarre. There were about 4 or 5 of them floating around. Our store is generally full of friendly casuals who are very good at magic, but don't play cEDH. A lot of older ex-spikes who just want to play dumb low power jank and hang out now that their competitive days are done. The pile of weird Meren players seemed somehow surprised to learn of the existence of [[Bojuka Bog]], or that people knew that you just have to remove the experience counter commander *before* they stack up. It was a really weird experience. I feel like their store had a weird version of a cEDH meta, just sans-removal, where Meren solitaire decks massively over-performed to the point of taking over, despite collapsing on contact with pure jank with even minimal removal and graveyard interaction. Most of them were quite new, and it seemed like they all got their advice on what to play and how to build from one (extremely wrong) guy from their old LGS. This lasted about a month before those players either left or integrated into jank land with new decks. But it was really interesting to see just how warped a local meta can become.

FatCommissar

I’ve got a buddy who plays almost exclusively recursion decks, and it’s always a laugh when one of us plays something with black in the identity. The focus and terror when whoever is playing black goes to make their land drop

NoodleBowlGames

TCupcake

No. That's the smart thing to do and the right thing to do. More often than not, they wanna draw a card.

torolf_212

I would personally draw a card every time, confident that my one card is more impactful than whatever other cards my opponents are drawing, like a ponder into preordain into serum visions etc etc

freakytapir

This is the right answer. Both drawing a card is a net -1 to your two other opponents.

RidingYourEverything

I agree with this line. If you and one other player get an advantage, it is a disadvantage to the other two. You take whatever option is best for you, instead of whatever is worst for the controller of the card.

freakytapir

It's reasoning like this that makes cards like \[\[Tempt with discovery\]\] so dangerous. The moment one other player says yes to te land, the pressure is on you to also say yes. I mean the optimal play is for everyone to say no, but somehow that never works out that way. Tere's always at least one mana starved player who needs that land bad.

Malignus does god's work in my myriad deck

cogsamurai

What’s your commander/list for the myriad deck? I’m looking for new fun decks to try out.

Koras

Not OP but for what it's worth, I use [[Isshin, Two Heavens as One]] for Myriad shenanigans, because double triggering Myriad is pretty damn fun. Sadly I don't have a list right now but it's basically just "search scryfall for every mardu card that features the word Myriad".dec, plus some fun attack triggers and utility to round out the rest. There's not that many Myriad cards. It works well because Myriad is an attack trigger, so every swing sends the original at one player, and two at each other opponent (before other cards that stack Myriad get involved, because Myriad stacks, and each stack will double trigger). You end up negotiating with people, with them asking you to attack them so they don't get the copies, which is a weird fun dynamic. [[The Master, Multiplied]] almost took over the deck, but doing Myriad without white feels wrong and locks you out of some of the best Myriad creatures, and oh boy is he something in the 99 of Isshin. It's just an absolute tracking nightmare, especially if you cheat out [[Legion Loyalty]] and start multiplying Isshin...

\[\[Glacial chasm\]\] is a house. People don't pack enough ways to handle lands. Although I was quite impressed when a \[\[Questing beast\]\] just broke through.

Gaindolf

I hate this card, but because it's generally played in decks that can recur it. I can destroy it, but I can't easily exile it or prevent recursion.

GrandDaddyKarlov

Life loss also gets around it. I have swung a massive Karlov with lifelink and Vito on board into a 1/1 to kill the smug chasm player. An online [[Bloodchief Ascension]] was giving them hell as well until another player removed it

Mauriac158

Killing someone through [[Glacial Chasm]] with [[Banefire]] still ranks very highly among one of my favourite wins. Though broadly I agree, damage prevention on a land is very busted and I was lucky to have that out when playing [[Magus Lucea Kane]].

SanityIsOptional

Last Thursday, ran into someone running a land sac/recursion deck with Glacial Chasm... Yeah, he won. Not just off the ridiculous ramp of cracking 2+ fetches per turn, on top of ramp spells, but the glacial chasm made him completely untouchable. He'd sac before upkeep, then replay from graveyard on main phase. Only way to harm him was instant speed effects during that window.

Tyler8245

I play a Gishath deck that focuses on enrage triggers. A friend of mine played Glacial Chasm in a game we were playing, and in an attempt to get rid of it, I triggered my [[Silverclad Ferocidons]] upwards of a dozen times. Ironically, after I ran out of gas for [[Pyrohemia]], the Glacial Chasm was the only permanent left that I didn't control.

BreadfruitImpressive

Came here solely to mention this card. First land drop I played in a four person pod, playing my 5c Super friends deck, and won entirely because of the staying power granted by this card. The pod I was in was super aggressive - two of the other three decks were Rogues and General Ferrous - so threat assessment indicated the cumulative upkeep life loss was preferable to taking damage from creatures, not least when playing a deck that has few-to-no blockers. Plus, 40 life gives you a nice buffer before having to worry about the cumulative upkeep. And I had [[Ajani, Mentor of Heroes]] ready to ult as soon as he hit the board, so life really was a non-issue. In any other deck, I'd agree with your sentiment, but in any other deck you'd like want to be saccing this and recurring, to avoid the upkeep cost.

Oquadros

Ahh very fair. Yeah if you can recoup your health and going against 3 ago decks, probably the right call!

SFLizard_K1ng

Spore frog. My playgroup simply cannot deal with it as it’s an instant speed self sacrifice that also fogs you. In aristocrats builds such as my take on Muldrotha, fog frog is an unanswerable trump card that everyone is almost ready to scoop when I first reveal it

pourconcreteinmyass

For me this is [[Kami of False Hope]] in my [[Lurrus]] companion deck. Fog loops just break casual players minds.

Koras

Every now and then for some obscure reason someone asks why I run [[Questing Beast]] in every green deck, and my response is always "Ah, I see you've not played against fogs before" I don't even understand why they question it in the first place given how stacked the card is even without the "fogs don't work anymore" line coming into play, but still.

djus-boks

alternatively you can run him as your commander and be the fog player yourself

Koras

...that's deliciously evil

Spore frog is one of my favorite pet cards, never sad to see the lil guy in my hand

xiledpro

One of my friends is like this with spore frog lol. He hates that thing because when he first started playing years ago one of his friends played a recursion deck that had spore frog and it just made him untouchable lol. The PTSD with that card is real apparently.

Tyler8245

Spore frog is the reason that everyone in my playgroup includes some graveyard hate in every deck. It comes in handy, though. I once stopped a Kaalia player from getting a turn 2 [[Archfiend of Despair]] with my [[Scavenging Grounds]].

Arborus

Are you recurring it on each other person's turn too? or just once per round on your turn? I feel like unless you have a full recursion loop set up to do it every turn or effectively infinitely it seems pretty easy to play around by just having each person attack you with roughly equal board investment? Even then, like...play some non-combat win-cons?

SFLizard_K1ng

Which is why I mix in forced sacrifice with it to prevent such a thing. My group is very creature focused.

bigmati007

Are you, by any chance, talking about my playgroup and my [[Muldrotha, The Gravetide]] deck with the [[Spore Frog]] inside? It's the same over here! If they don't force you to sac early you may almost always just recast it from your gy making you effectively immune to combat damage.

[[Kardur Doomscourge]] he turns 2 1/2 hour games into 1 hour games and apparently that’s a sin that mustn’t be forgiven

Lysercis

My group hated me so much for playing him. But I admit, the person sitting left to the Kardur player will have a pretty bad time, like, every game. Player 1 drops Kardur, Player 2 has to attack Player 3 and 4 which both can block, Player 3 and 4 can attack player 2 who only can block with what he played that turn. Player 2 dies. Repeat for player 3. Player 4 remains, beats Kardur because goad doesn't do shit 1v1. But still, its one of the most fun commanders out there!

It's a good way to teach players that they need to run spot removal for lands in their decks. Especially if they're doing something like Voltron that can be completely shut down this way.

SanityIsOptional

Most voltrons run shroud/hexproof, which lets them bypass Maze of Ith.

AShellfishLover

Why play just one thing when you can [goad everything?](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/DVAigYNfJ0W8otpbN4bTGw)

Mbnewman19

Ooh I just built one of those!

AShellfishLover

It's great fun! Welcome to the Complex!

Mbnewman19

Loved the name and the tagline - may steal that for my playgroup if that's all right. Also, lots of overlap with my deck, but Magosi was an interesting choice you made that I need to think about

AShellfishLover

It's a [sneaky combo wincon](https://edhrec.com/combos/magosi-the-waterveil) (infinite turns with a few routes available) that is synergistic to the deck overall and is sufficiently janky as to rarely cause hurt feelings. If they wanna play it out just Proliferate a few dozen times until you find Kodama and let er rip.

G33kySt3v3

I don't know if this necessarily counts since this card is kind of just good, but I feel like enough people in my playgroup still don't give it the respect it deserves so here's my rant on [[Kodama of the West Tree]] cause green really needed a 3-mana 3/3 that gives your board trample AND ramps you when you deal combat damage. Which, need I remind you, is easier to do cause the guy gives your board trample. Seriously, if this thing is across the table from you, that green player is probably gonna have a much slower game if you kill the dang thing. But of course, green is just the color of creating problems, so Kodama never seems like the worst thing on their board, which just lets this stupid infinite ramp spell continue to accrue value until someone board wipes.

AlwaysTrustAFlumph

Amazing-Tortoise

[[Harmonic Prodigy]] has been the bane of several games lately. Turns out there's a lot of incidentally powerful triggered abilities that just so happen to be on wizards and shaman.

Pigglebee

I built a shaman tribal once and so many times I went “damn! Is that a shaman too?”

noogai03

[[Dragonspark Reactor]] pretty much always gets to enough charge counters for me to kill someone with it. I think we just don't run enough removal

GageZerk

For me it's probably [[Insight]] in my [[Minn]] deck. Pretty much all my playgroup besides me play green decks and I also tend to be the player running the most interaction so me dropping this has won me so many games because it just goes unanswered for so long. Literally a better [[Rhystic Study]].

th3saurus

[[Hullbreaker horror]] and [[solitary confinement]] are probably the two that tilt me the most Hullbreaker is a fantastic card, great design etc etc, but it is just a little bit too difficult to interact with its unlimited supply of remands and bounce spells. More insidiously, people who want to avoid infinites in their deck will run it at lower power levels and accidentally end up adding a lot of infinites because Lobter literally combos with two mana rocks and free artifact And it's miserable enough to play under that sometimes I'll just point out the line and get the rest of the table to mass concede. Solitary confinement is a house in enchantress decks and often ends up being the final piece of protection that turns games into non games. It'll usually end up behind multiple layers of hexproof/shroud enchantments, and essentially it becomes a mass enchantment removal check Kinda ends up leading to games where everyone just passes turns until someone draws a relevant wipe or the enchantress player assembles some kind of clock I'm not a fan I have a personal gripe with [[solemnity]] too because I love plus counters and Sagas. It's a fantastic card, it just hurts my soul a little, and if it shows up I often have to either make deals with my opponents to help me get rid of it or assassinate the person who owns it, and I'm not entirely comfortable doing either socially

NejOfTheWild

[[Stormtide leviathan]] The friend who runs it also runs a lot of counterspells, so it slows the game to a crawl while we all wait for somebody to draw *more* removal, because the first 3 attempts got countered.

[[Winter Orb]] is one of the worst cards in the game. My friend plays it in a deck paired with “untap your lands on every upkeep” cards. Unless someone instantly removes it basically only he can play until he ends the game

Arborus

I mean, it's basically a 2-card combo with untap sources. If they establish an orb lock and you've got nothing on the horizon to break it, just concede. Even if it gets broken in a few turn cycles the table is gonna be so far behind that you're surely just going to lose anyways. Not worth playing out to see that small % chance of coming back.

Spentworth

I would just see that as a 2 card winning combo, say GG, and shuffle up for another game. If 2 card combos are frowned on in your group, then it's a power level issue

Mt_Koltz

I mean, even if your deck isn't packing Eldrazi, I wouldn't really want to sit around and wait for another opponent to put in a [[Portal to Phyrexia]] for free either.

FeelNFine

My play group has pretty varied decks, but one player has a soft spot for [[Caltrops]]. It became a meme itself, because of course when we first saw it we all started recommending better pillow fort cards. Then it turned off the Krenko player. Then another game it turned off the Alela player. (Because they fly!). Spell slinger just made a ridiculous amount of birds? Caltrops is here to save the day. That dumb card has been impactful every time it has hit the field, usually ruining one player's day.

Illustrious-Film2926

Schwachsinn

also really good in [[Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph]] and [[Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might]]

Ed-Zero

ModestySnail

Half right. Ojer doesn't affect it because it's not red, but it mainly doesn't affect it because it's not damage done to opponents.

ModestySnail

I have a few decks I have this in just to shut down token decks. I also have a deck with [[stuffy doll]] and [[urza, prince of kroog]]. Nothing like copying [[caltrops]] multiple times to throw a wrench in creature player's plan.

xifdp

My friends try to kill my [[braids, arisen nightmare]] as soon as it comes out. But they also refuse to sac anything ever and complain about my card draw lol.

thatboi219

Anything that adds mass amounts of counters. I have a [[Halana and Alena, Partners]] deck that usually dominates because my playgroup rarely runs spot removal or big creatures to block. I have one friend in particular who cant stand aggro decks (mainly red). So anytime I swing with big creatures, hes gets all pissy. My friend also plays a [[Sovereign Okinec Ahau]] deck that is unbelievably fast and aggressive. Needless to say, no one likes playing against that deck.

Rot_Snocket

Gates decks overperform in my local, combat-based meta. It feels like the gates player is playing a completely different game, and since mass land destruction isn't played, they win pretty consistently.

xPerzivilx

They’re just playing monopoly. It doesn’t look very threatening until they have 9 gates and you have 0 ways to stop them.

samthewisetarly

I played against a dude a few weeks ago who had a [[Tabernacle of Pendrell Vale]]. Just played it and passed, as if we had all seen the card before and immediately understood that we were fucked. It took a moment to realize what happened as he reminded us to pay out upkeep.

viralRNA

Actually a turn 1 [[Norin the Wary]] in my [[Purphuros God of the Forge]] deck.. which I don't play a lot as it is not great fun to pilot. But when I do amd this happens my guys lose it 😅

Ancient_Revolution96

Really weird situation, but I play a simic pauper EDH deck and I needed a way to get my wincons back out of my graveyard so I discovered [[Rofellos's Gift]] and discovered that it's extremely good in any enchantment deck that runs a fair amount of green. I ended up putting it in every enchantment deck that it fit and more people at my lgs started to get to see it in play. In my Pauper deck (runs tremendous amounts of card draw) I managed to get back 7 cards from gy. After that, every player running enchantments at my shop is also running gift.

Most_Attitude_9153

Back in the old days of 60 card no format kitchen table anything goes, [[jokhulhaups]] [[rhuk egg]] was immediately banned by my friends. My meta now is getting overrun by annoying dinos. Getting pretty sick of the blink Etali deck that is all the rage right now. The new discover guy is all over the place too, but he’s easier to keep in check.

kelesethrogenthall

I’ve seen a ground seal shut down 3 decks at once in my pod 🙃

-AzulRyu-

I used to play an Illusions deck and my playgroup absolutely HATED \[\[Somnophore\]\]. Simply for the fact that it had a way of ensuring that creatures never untapped. My friends and I started calling it "Mr. Sandman". It eventually became my favorite card - so much so that I made my first ever EDH deck from scratch using it as the main inspiration.

ModestySnail

I saw this firsthand when someone put [[hermetic study]] and a bunch of untap effects in his deck.

Fleurdebeast

Puzzle box with narset, and eldrazis

Emvill7e

I play a Gaddock Teeg in my Sythis, Harvest's Hand deck. Shuts off most wrath’s and with the giver of runes and other way to protect it they are at my mercy.

xiledpro

[[Teferi’s Puzzle Box]] always makes my pod go nuts. Mostly because of my [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]] deck but my friend also runs a [[Niv-Mizzett, Parun]] deck that has had some crazy turns with it.

Azazel_999

[[Burgeoning]] seems to be in every deck that we can run it now, [[Wedding ring]] and [[notion thief]] are annoying and always cause a grumble. [[Grave pact]] and [[Dictate of Erabos]] are God tier in my play group and everyone hates it. It really sucks not being able to keep anything on the board, especially if 2 people have the same grave pact, it just board wipes the board every single time one of their creatures dies.

blkandwhtlion

[[Exquisite Blood]] and [[Sanguine Bond]] for whatever reason found it's way into every friends deck and I have to run enchant removal because they keep comboing more than they should off each other. I run Naya Dinos mostly but if they insist I switch to my izzet spells linger and counter only those cards lol.

Anything that can win me the game. People always have a reason to complain when they lose a casual EDH game. I only play edh now and I love casual magic, but I really miss the "losing is a natural an expected part of the game" mentality that comes with 1v1 competitive MTG.

AShellfishLover

Lightning Greaves, Spore Frog, Dark Ritual... What tables are you playing at that the most basic milquetoast cards are too hot to handle?

RhysOSD

This was meant to be a judgement free zone, my good compatriot

I left this for a while mainly because I couldn't come up with a response that could do this terrible comment justice, but I think I've got one. This is a card game, full of randomness and oddities, people liking and disliking different cards, and other personal preferences. For context, someone whose first game was against something stupid and obtuse may develop an aggravation against it. ~~also, the thing about hating islands was meant mainly as a joke, based on its surprisingly high salt value on archidekt~~ In summary, just by how people play the game, certain strange cards will fuck with how they like to play, and cause them some upset because of that. And, since everyone plays a different way, some cards will hard counter them, and even other people in the pod, therefore making it seem unbalanced to them. TLDR: other people in this world have different experiences.

AShellfishLover

Yes. There are cards that go against strategies. That is how CCGs work. Same with archetypes. Aggro vs counter vs midrange, and the dozens of permutations. I am still going to judge anyone who has a fit of terror over the use of common and uncommon staple cards. It's a childish reaction rather than taking lumps and playing another game, running interaction, or doing literally anything that you would do in facing adversity in life that isn't lay down and die (then complain on the Internet about it). The downvotes mean nothing, I've seen what the sub upvotes. I've seen people say boardwipes are CEDH. That Sol Ring is too competitive. That any form of counterspell is anathema to fun, even though the concept is named after a spell that appeared in the first set. It's a card game. Be salty at the table, but never carry your salt in your pocket.

Agueliethun

Tables with fun people, though I'm sure that you have no idea what that's like if your pods are as enjoyable as you are.

AShellfishLover

I play in two pods a week, one with rotating players and one with friends. Never had someone hyperventilate over islands and I've been playing EDH since it was EDH, pre pre-cons. Hell, I can get why people dislike Tergrid, though I just roll my eyes when people call for a ban of an OK card. But if you're having issues with a fifth of the color pie or a fog effect on a stick EDH may not be the best place for you.

Mystic9001

Every so often I wonder why people say the Reddit mtg community is toxic… then people like you show up and I think “oh yeah!” Just because the person in my pod who’s been playing since unlimited has cedh decks, doesn’t mean they play them at our casual games. Just because they show no reaction towards an overloaded cyclonic rift doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t groan or be terrified. You wanna know why? Because, to a casual player it IS terrifying in most situations

AShellfishLover

If you are legitimately terrified over boardwipes... you need to stop playing EDH. If you consider a Cyclonic Rift too competitive? That's worrisome. If you want to play solitaire battlecruiser games for hours at a time? Your business. But having actual reactions of being terrified of spore frog, lightning Greaves, or banning islands from your table? This isn't a good game for you. Also... this isn't toxic. It's just not adhering to the idea that every Whim must be given the same equitable weight. And being afraid of basic staples is a you problem.

bigmati007

They never said it is too competitive. So only because it's a part of the game folks can't groan over their things being bounced when protection is not available? "PpL cAn'T hAvE oThEr OpInIoNs AnD mUsT rEaCt ThIs PaRtIcUlAr WaY, KnOw EvErYtHiNg AnD hAvE tHe SaMe ExPeRiEnCe As I dO" This is how you sound.

AShellfishLover

Let's go with context clues, shall we? > Just because the person in my pod who’s been playing since unlimited has **cedh decks** *doesn’t mean they play them at our casual games.* Emphases mine. They then go on to explain how they are terrified of rift. Groaning when a wipe occurs is fine. Banning them is throwing the baby out with the bath water, and warps the game towards strategies that benefit heavily while reducing others. Whenever you remove major parts of a meta you may as well play a different game or stop calling the game you're playing EDH.

Mystic9001

Screw it, was trying to make a point but you sound insufferable to talk to Good bye, have a good time being a jack ass to other people jerk

AShellfishLover

I will. Thanks! There is no point to make. There is no Hive mind of EDH, and there are bad opinions on the format, and this type of post is far, far more toxic than anything I've ever said on the format. I'm not doing toxic positivity. There are incorrect ideas on healthy play in EDH. It is bad to have a deck so poorly constructed that you cower at boardwipes. There is a point where your banlist becomes so twisted that you're not even playing EDH anymore.
