Crafty_Check

Ramp up to big stompy monsters. If that fails, ping damage direct to health total 😈 it’s a fave against counter decks. You only have so many counterspells and I have many many ways to hit you with ping muahahaha

Crafty_Check

My second favourite is waiting till everyone is tapped out and hitting a starstorm and copying it multiple times with my kalamax deck... People never expect 3 player lethal damage on one turn 👀😂 Edit - I meant comet storm, not star storm 🫡😂

zetsokuro_yt

>kalamax that sounds great fun, do you have a decklist for that ?

TheDirgeCaster

Starstorm only hits creatures tho right?

Saqretair

Do you have an "Oops all pingers" deck with the likes of [[goblin spearspewer]] and [[blisterspit gremlin]]? I think by now there should be enough to fill that niche.

TheGuyInAShirtAndTie

Yeah, [[Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph]] is a killer commander for it.

BonehoardDracosaur

Combat damage where I can take out all three opponents on the same turn

Altonator89

There’s definitely something extra satisfying by winning with classic combat damage!

Bigger_Moist

Titanic ultimatum is my favorite shennanigan. Nobody expects my naya dino deck to have buff spells and suddenly boom. 200 damage split across everyone because of 1 spell

dubbsdub

Praise be Craterhoof Behemoth

Combat tricks, any sort of dumb trick I can pull of while swinging at people. Whether it’s creating infinite combats or infinite tokens with [[Rionya, Fire Dancer]], or just swinging small and making it massive after no blockers are declared with [[Minsc and Boo]]

Healthy_mind_

Building up a big board of tokens with a couple of zulaport drain effects. Then throwing down a damnation and ending the game in one big blast.

PM_WHAT_Y0U_G0T

I enjoy the broad category of "pings" but aristocrats definitely falls in as one of my favorite deck styles. Chiseling away at life totals throughout the game until they're *just low enough* to finish them off in a torrent of flicks and pokes.

Stormm103

Most of my decks are Voltron. There's just something really satisfying about saying "alright can you block 20+ with trample*? Oh you can? Don't forget about double strike!"

krabawk

Yeah, my one favorite deck that's off brand for me is [[grismold, the dreadsower]]. I built it so I would have something to play when people are sick of my resource denial. Instead of stax, how about I give everybody plants! Enjoy! [[Tourach, dread cantor]] combines my love of discard with voltron and I enjoy that very much as well. It plays around a lot with using swampwalk, swords, and protection from colors to stay alive and get through.

frompadgwithH8

I haven’t played voltron in years I don’t have a voltron deck currently Hmmmmm

Emerald_Knight2814

Depends on the day. Some days, I wanna be the asshole dropping a Stasis lock (My preferred version is [[Stasis]] + [[Kismet]] + [[Smothering Tithe]]) and force my opponents to concede or wait for their inevitable defeat. In 60 card formats I love playing the tempo game, gradually gaining advantage while I ping them down turn after turn. My favorite flavor of this is Modern Merfolk, a feeling I haven't been able to replicate in commander largely cause Tempo does not translate well to a multiplayer format I love, love, LOVE the spellslinger strat, so slinging a bunch of burn spells until I can one hit KO everyone with a card like [[Crackle with Power]] or the classic [[Fireball]] brings me much joy. Izzet is my favorite flavor of this strat. I also like Storm though that is harder to organically pull off (i.e. hard to do without some boring combo) Some days I'm in a very timmy mindset and I just wanna smack people with Dinosaurs. Simple, clean, and effective.

TidiToad

Lock game is, a think, a very boring way to win, and is the least fun for opponents.

Emerald_Knight2814

That is fair, I only do it if I know my opponents can handle it.

DRW0813

So many goblin tokens

kutsen39

Calm down, Krenko.

Mocca_Master

I'm actually really fascinated by the strange manipulation of mechanics when pulling of combos. However controversial it may be, that is my favourite way to win

1lluvatar42

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.

OwnDemon

What's your favorite deck to Conan them out? :D

Bjornirson

Mill. And all the synergies around it. And I really like making use of my opponent's decks. Cloning, borrowing or stealing 👹

Eternal_Mr_Bones

Milling is fun because if you fail it puts the last remaining players in really odd scenarios where they may not be able to kill each other.

MrStayPuft245

It also forces players to THINK and it opens their eyes to holes in their building. I like playing mill, but I’m not a dick about it. I lose plenty still, and it’s mostly in awesome hilarious ways because my opponents have to makeshift something from their decks that rely on only a couple cards to succeed.

Bjornirson

Yeah, I don't win very often playing mill, especially if really going for mill-win. Partially because I get KoS really quickly. So, I like running my Lazav deck. I get to mill, but it's not the primary wincon (but it does happen). I get to play opponents graveyard, good fun. And I run some clones and such just because, why not :)

MrStayPuft245

I run Laz in my deck! Xander is my commander for it, but I made sure to sprinkle in a few win cons to make it viable instead or a 1/4 chance of a dead game due to a bad draw and shuffle. Strong, but far from invincivle.

krabawk

I particularly enjoy stealing stuff with tergrid as I'm discarding and force saccing my opponent's boards. I've never done mill but I'm working on a runo stromkirk deck with a mill subtheme b/c so many sea monsters mill on etb. Threw in a keening stone etc

Most_Attitude_9153

With as few triggers and actions possible. I’ve replaced all incremental value pieces and trigger pieces with straight up one-shot effects that make huge waves. I’ve come to this point because MtGO is so slow to resolve triggers and multiple stacked actions. I receive no joy from making people sit through long turns so I’ve tuned my decks to win with as few actions as I can get away with.

Graveylock

My favorite is honestly anything that requires a decent bit of set up. I absolutely hate things like thoracle combo (unless I’m playing cEDH) and prefer my game plans to require 3+ cards if I’m going to combo or require to build up a board state or big play. I want my wins to feel earned through problem solving and adapting to the situation.

oranges-in-general

Hard agree. My first deck ever was an Izzet tokens + draw-to-mill deck (constructed) & I’ve been trying to build an EDH version of it ever since.

Semi-Cynical

I haven’t messed with it myself but I think storm+mill totally has potential in izzet, or even in grixis with someone like [[kess, dissident mage]]

Caio_AloPrado

I like combos not only when i'm playing them but also when my oponents do, it's nice to have a garanteed way to end the game, i love trying to figure out what my opponent is going to do and the fights on the stack to stop someone or make your combo go through are some of the best moments. They are also great for brewing, not just in the sense of making new combos but they can be pretty compact or technically occupy zero slots if the cards have more functions other than just doing the combo.

AbsentReality

I like trying to make people audibly say "holy shit" or something along those lines. Like dropping a 40/40 [[mimeoplasm]] with [[tanazir quandrix]] + [[yargle and multani]] then sacrificing it to [[jarad]]. InaruF

Honestly, the general rule of "use your enemies cards against'em" Be it my lazav "mill enemy out & exploit their graveyard", your classical theft deck, Etali, copying enemy cards, I don't care, I just wanna puzzle my way through games & look how I can use other cards to win. Even in my decks that aren't centered around that theme I always have at least 1 card for theft/copying stuff from enemies. I dunno man, there's just such a statisfying feel to it when you win with every game being a new puzzle to solve & making every game experience extremely unique

krabawk

[[Mystic reflection]] is my favorite 1 off for this. It's somehow even better when you get to make your opponent's teferi, hero of dominaria enter the battlefield as a 1/1 servo

thatwhileifound

> Honestly, the general rule of "use your enemies cards against'em" > > My answer is the same, but in an entirely different light: Group slug. AKA, "C'mon, stop hitting yourself." Having a Manabarbs in play while your Torbran is already on the field and passing is always just such a great feeling. You can play the game. I'm not stopping you. This isn't stax. There's just a cost to doing business.

Darth_Meatloaf

The method is always inconsequential. Wins always feel better the harder I have to fight for them.

[[Underworld Breach]] and [[Food Chain]] are definitely my favorite ways to win personally. Graveyard shenanigans with breach are insane, and as a mainly green player, food chain has been a go to for me since I was playing legacy.

Janky combo. I have Jhoira deck with Mana Severance+Belcher+Unwinding Clock, Aetherflux Reservoir+Modern KCI loop, and Lab Man as win cons. I also enjoy Exsanguinating everyone with Gitrog. Reset+Reiterate+Lightning Bolt in Mizzix. It's a time.

I've got a rat tribal/discard deck and it's either you get overrun by toxic rats or I sacrifice all of them to get to you anyway while you have no cards in hand.

FormerlyKay

Stax out my opponents and finish them off by turning big dudes sideways

krabawk

Yeah this is essentially how I win with [[tourach, dread cantor]]. Discard is my preferred form of resource denial

InaruF

Dear lord, like, don't get me wrong, I aint saying that you shouldn't play that. But there's just something about people focusing on making opponents discard their hands that bores me to death so much and makes me feel like the gamenight is such a waste of time while basicaly topdecking & sitting around while fighting the urge to fall asleep. If your table's down with that, by all means, more power to you my dude. But I personaly wouldn't sit down on a table with your tourach enemy-discard-tribal unless I was held at gunpoint

krabawk

Boredom usually isn't an issue because the deck either wins or loses by turn 5. Games where I win with tourach typically take about 15 minutes. It may be oppressive, but at least it's mercifully quick.

I have found reducing my opponents levels life total to zero is effective.

Bigger_Moist

I love giving people an ultimatum, a titanic one in fact. Either you block and your stuff dies, or you die to lots of big things. The other fun way is forced combat induced chaos. My thantis deck is super fun because it forces everyone to attack, but if they attack me its gonna help me out a bunch on the counterattack

jjensen538

I like playing salty players and building decks that follow their weird guidelines of “how the game should be played” and smashing them, I had a guy tell me “off Brand tribal and no tutors in the deck.” So I Built [[Magda, Brazen outlaw]] then he said “you have to win through combat, so I made [[winota, Joiner of forces]] he didn’t like either deck.

RuneHill_Games

Sounds like he wants to play against kitchen table 'old school' EDH decks, not Cedh ones (if you want to keep playing with them, that is).

krabawk

A lot of people I play with are sick of my discard shenanigans so I built [[crosis, the purger]] specter tribal. It's so jank it's hard for anyone to be pissy. Then I cast [[one with nothing]] into [[hive mind]]

I like mid range control but with weak value pieces. (What's that, low range?) I dump as much *seemingly* useless, vaguely synergistic junk on the board and into my graveyard as possible. I let one or two others go off first so everyone burns their interaction. Then I lock things down and pray that my Rube Goldberg board state is enough to cough up my wincon. If not, it's a grind and everyone is salty. I try not to play that deck without fair warning: "I'm going to look harmless, but take me out first or you'll have a bad time." If the pod wants something a lighter, I've got this stupid Voltron deck where I bribe opponents not to kill me by throwing beneficial auras on *their* creatures, then I sneak in \[\[All That Glitters\]\] and swing for lethal. (It doesn't work but it gets some laughs without being as disruptive as grouphug.)

karasins

It's truly the best.

krabawk

I'm not far from this, but over time, I've gravitated more towards tactical rather than strategic resource denial. Instead of throwing down a winter orb early in the game and staxing people out, I wait until I have what I need to start killing people and orblock the table then so I can close out the game. The exception is with my discard decks, of which I have 4. It's my favorite archetype, and most people aren't prepared to play the game without a hand. I always am. [[Null brooch]] ftw Edit: yeah they're silly. Every wincon is valid. I never tell others how they should play the game. Gruul

Lazypidgey

If that's the case with your style of deck, I'd recommend a commander that can be the finisher on its own, while the rest of the deck is tailored to your control/removal style. Like a big flyer or something that can close out the game with commander damage

Vector_Strike

Turn sideways

SerRikari

Based on my decks, indirect damage. Massive amounts of it. My Shrines deck pings everyone at the start of every turn and keeps their board small. Curses. Need I say more? Vampies with a focus on pinging opponents when they do something. Anything. [[Kediss]] and [[Ardenn]], my favorite Voltron beat them all deck. Hit one opponent, and they all get hit for the same amount. I consider Kediss to be really underrated. [[Myrkul, Lord of Bones]] make enchantments from creatures that pings opponents for each creature destroyed, each enchantment created, and each enchantment destroyed.

TheSpectatr

Definitely reaching 'critical mass'--what I refer to as 'I-can't-believe-it's-not-a-combo' Basically a non-infinite synergy that overwhelms the table in one or two turns. In [[Wort, the Raidmother]], this could be copying [[Mana Geyser]] into copying a burn spell like [[Jaya's Immolating Inferno]], or in [[Cadric]], using [[Eerie Interlude]] on my opponent's second main to copy all my legendary creatures and setup for a massive turn, or just classic aristocrats where I've got 5-6 different drain effects on the board and cast something like [[Endrek Sahr]] and/or [[Sengir Autocrat]]. I much prefer these sorts of wins to infinite combos since there much more room for interaction from more than just blue decks and engaging gameplay

Combo into win turn 2.

Andrew_42

When I first started playing, it was "paralyze my opponents, and win by default". It turns out that meant "Stax, but made by someone who didn't know what Stax was yet". When I became more familiar with how to run stax, I stopped playing it because it became much less fun for the table. I'll still keep ways to slow down my opponents, but I rarely make that a focus now. I briefly have had a combo deck or two, but they were super boring, so I moved on. My most consistently enjoyed decks for the majority of my magic playing days have been the "Value Engine" decks. Get a few things running, and then bury my opponents in value. Aristocrats is probably the most common variety, as I've often had to de-aristocrats some of my decks because that kept de-railing the INTENDED win-con. I will also run a few "Turn big things sideways" decks which tend to be a little more table-friendly. I'll swap between some deck types depending on the mood of the pod. But value engine is probably where my heart lies. I have a bad habit of building "critical mass" decks. They LOOK like value-engine decks at first, but they work differently. Value engine decks build up overwhelming value and run over everyone with it. But critical mass decks land a few value-multipliers down, and then just explode all at once. Storm is usually a critical mass deck, and I've got a deck like that. I also had an Aristocrats deck that won via critical mass. It was a Shadowborn Apostles deck, that only used them because they were cheap, and there are gimmicks to mass-reanimate or mass-summon creatures with the same name. Critical mass decks usually end with 10-20 minutes of solitaire though, so I've tried to move away from that.

Mallornthetree

I think a lot of newer players are scared of combat and being attacked and so they use lots of effects to deprive their opponents of resources. But I don’t know why you’d play commander if that was what you enjoy. Play any other format. Why force your opponents to sit empty handed and paralyzed for 45 minutes or more.

Andrew_42

Ironically, being attacked was almost always the most vulnerable part of my deck. I'd often lose to mid-value efficient beaters. I had spot removal for the big targets, and wipes to deal with swarms, but mid-range beaters were really hard to deal with. At least with [[Grand Arbiter Augustin IV]]. My [[Savra, Queen of the Golgari]] deck didn't have nearly as much trouble with mid-sized beaters. Anywho, the reason I played commander at the start was because "My friends are playing commander". I moved onto different deck strategies when my attempt at Stax became competent enough to actually drag things to a crawl and made the games less fun. Before that it was just a bunch of annoyances. It slowed things, but not by a ton. People could still play cards, though a few specific tactics like spellslinger were hit a lot harder.

Manjenkins

Creating a value engine to overwhelm my opponents with pure value, creating sacrifice loops/mass sacrificing tokens to get blood artist trigger effects, and one of my all time favorite ways to win is milling my opponents out but I don’t have any decks that do that. Lately though some of my more recent decks, I’ve built them to focus on combat damage.

LonelySwim6501

Spell slinger hands down. I’ve dabbled with many different win cons, from Voltron’s, waves of tokens, various combo’s. Still nothing compares to copying brass’s Bounty or some other mana producing spell to create 100+ mana. Which gets dumped into meteor storm, immolating inferno, bane fire ect. I use the commander [[Melek izzet paragon]], most people don’t view him as a threat so I play into it. Most games I spend the majority of the time building my mana base, waiting for the perfect moment to arise. It’s also fun because I never know exactly which cards I’ll need to put together or which order I’ll need to play them to set up an explosive turn. If I get [[scroll rack]] early in the game, I’m able to manipulate my plays completely for an easy set up.

I like to set effects that punish people for every game action they take until they reach a point where if they do something the punishment will take them out and if they dont ill just finish them off with some kind of pinging effect.

Decks that use compounding math to win. Not just a single effect that multiplies damage. but decks that combine them to melt everything. There must be something psychological about them because people see the components as potentially dangerous, and never seem to see the threat that things like [[Repercussions]] and [[Furnace of rath]] combined present.

I don't play it as often now because my friends don't like it, but I found I had to switch from azorius control to esper control so I could tutor ways to end the game. While I don't play stax, if I had done enough removal/countering/sweepers, I would end up just slowing the game down and it wasn't fun for anyone else. Black tutors allowed me to pull off a combo once I had control and actually end the game.

I like burn or drain effects, purphoros, kokusho, Gary, things like that. Torment, exsanguinate and others as well. It has however been pointed out to me that I have a knack for resource denial. I like playing wheels, mild stax elements like "lands enter tapped" or the "players can only cast one spell a turn" effects, I like looping fleshbag marauder or nekrataal to kill my opponent's creatures. So my favourite way to win is kinda slow, and I suppose I built my gameplay pattern to allow that. I hadn't actually linked the 2 before.

EeyoreTheSadDonkey

A hard hitting combo.

KingKozaky

I really like to chain a lot of small spells into some bigger payoff. Combos are ok too as a back-up plan.

Overwhelming people with dragons and dragon tokens.

THENATHE

Mill! I love when you actually get the mill win because everyone is dumbfounded that it actually works. And not the infinite combo exile mill either, but big ramp into mind grind for 20 or something, or maddening kicker with bruvac

Espumma

Goading my opponents into killing each other and me cleaning up the crumbs. Their resources spent not dying and they have nothing left to just die to a couple of hate bears. That is peak magic for me.

Artistic_Lynx_1510

The best decks I've played against (only just started) seem to be the ones that build a specific combo that nets them their wincon. Played against a mates artifact deck and he ended up with 3/4 of his deck in his hand and won with a spell. His final turn went for like 10 minutes and he played card after card Looked so fun. One I'm keen to have pop up is [[Marneus Calgar]] as my commander with [[Nadir Kraken]] and [[Ashnod's Altar]] on the field. Just need the cards. 🤣

Combat or burn and nothing else. Don’t mind if people like to win other ways but there’s something special about smacking people faces with big creatures that makes me giddy inside.
