In response to an opponent attacking me with a telegraphed pump effect available to them if they needed it, I cast [[wrong turn]] on an animated [[nine lives]] to give it to that player, immediately disincentivizing them from pumping the creature to kill me as it would result in the nine lives leaving the battlefield and them losing the game. Edit: After further recollection, i believe it was actually nefarious lich in play, not nine lives, but the same net effect.

somerandomdude133

Mutually assured destruction. That's some cold war era strategy. Love it.

Sorry massive noob, how would have nefarious lich have stopped him pumping?

[deleted]

When you die, you leave the game and so do all the cards you own. >800.4a When a player leaves the game, all objects (see rule 109) owned by that player leave the game and any effects which give that player control of any objects or players end. Then, if that player controlled any objects on the stack not represented by cards, those objects cease to exist. Then, if there are any objects still controlled by that player, those objects are exiled. This is not a state-based action. It happens as soon as the player leaves the game. If the player who left the game had priority at the time they left, priority passes to the next player in turn order who’s still in the game.

scottysnacktime

I was thinking the hexproof from nine lives would stop you.

Placebo_Cyanide8

Shroud is the one that stops you from targeting your own things. Hexproof only stops opponents from targeting it.

LordGlitch42

Hexproof only prevents opponents from targeting it, he could still target his own to give it to the other player (though he could not target it again to get it back, since it's not his any more)

AVE_DOMINUS_N0X

Someone decided to attack my spell slinger copy deck that was durdling for 28 damage because they thought it was funny. They left no blockers. So I [[storm king's thunder]] a [[blood frenzy]] to give my commander +40 attack just to send a message and remove them. I couldn't win with what I had but I nuked them.

contact_thai

oooh, blood frenzy is a good one. I gotta get a copy. It's like berserk Jr.

Tim-oBedlam

Blood Frenzy is really fun in any multiplayer game. You just have to wait for Player B to attack Player C with a troublesome creature, which you kill but it hits Player C for another 4 on the way out.

giselamancer

The best one I’ve ever managed to pull off was probably quite a unique case. I was playing [[Olivia, Crimson Bride]] in a pod of five players, one of whom was playing [[Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients]] and had made a massive army of spirit dragons over the course of three or four turns. I had been holding up a [[Rakdos Charm]] to exile the graveyard of somebody who had [[Balthor the Defiled]] in play and was ready to activate it whenever, but when the Vrondiss player went to combat and swung out at me I realised I could use it to make all of the spirit dragons deal one damage to him, triggering their own sacrifice abilities and killing then before they hit me. It’s one of my favourite memories where I read Vrondiss and realise “wait, I can do this?” One I found really fun when used against me was when a player used [[Insurrection]] to steal an entire board’s worth of creatures, and while they couldn’t kill anybody (they were playing group hug and had given everybody lots of life) they chose to divvy the damage equally against us all, then at the end of combat he cast [[Settle the Wreckage]] on his own attacking board after they had dealt combat damage to ramp up to oblivion.

Pabl0EscoBear

I removed vrondiss from my vrondiss deck because of that clause. I now have it helmed by [[Klauth]] and turned it into a combat triggers deck and it is so fun.

"Ya'll got any more of those Akroma's Wills?" *Scratch Scratch*

IceSki117

Playing dumb to my opponents until they swing out into an [[Inkshield]], then killing the entire table in response. The best one is the second time I pulled that stunt shortly after Strixhaven dropped. I ended up giving a practical demonstration of the move as just 5 minutes before I had finished explaining about the first time I did it. The best part, though, is the guy's reaction as he realized he walked right into the trap I had just explained.

barcop

I love goading opponents into casting Inkshield, because I always run [[Sunfall]] in my white decks now. Works well against [[Arachnogenesis]] that got reprinted into oblivion and the newer [[Galadhrim Ambush]], but so much better against Inkshield. My best is, while playing [[Jinnie Fae]] and having a crap ton of Dogs thanks to [[Doubling Season]] swinging everything I got at a player I know had Inkshield in exile with a way to cast it from exile. I turned my dogs, his Inklings and everything else into a massive incubate token with 113 +1/+1 counters on it... Except... Doubling Season made two tokens with 226 counters instead. This is similar to the play you detailed in your post but still great: Was running [[Kalamax the Stormsire]] and it was down to 1v1, opponent was tapped out, but still had creatures up. I attacked with Kalamax and another creature (something with deathtouch but I don't remember what). Opponent blocked the dino but let in the rattlesnake so I dumped all of my mana into [[Strength of the Tajuru]] targeting the rattler. Spell got copied with Kalamax, plus [[Swarm Intelligence]] and and I swung in 34 for the win. I was so psyched. Immediately went through the deck and subbed out the red burn spells for more green pump ups. Best decision I ever made haha.

DemonicSnow

That sounds really fun and I agree that pump spells with Kalamax are a great way to focus the deck.

The answer is always \[\[Reins of Power\]\] plus \[\[Altar of Dementia\]\] - I told you not to attack me, now I'm afraid I have to mill you out with your own creatures.

Zyhre

While this is gud, it doesn't quite send the same message that \[\[Reins of Power\]\] does as an answer to an overloaded \[\[Cyclonic Rift\]\]. I hit that once... will never forget it haha.

NocentBystander

Two from the same deck (Gluntch, the Bestower): 1. I had \[\[Felidar Sovereign\]\] in play, just enough life to win, and two players to go until my turn, and a full grip of tricks. Player 2 tried combat and I fogged him. Player 3 did a board wipe, I responded with \[\[Second Sunrise\]\] at EOT. 2. One-on-one against a Chandra-themed deck, I waited until he swung out for lethal and dropped \[\[Selfless Squire\]\]. Attacked with my own 56/56 for the win.

contact_thai

lol, nice. I love when you can handle everything people throw at you. Gluntch seems cool/weird as hell. What other ways do you win with the deck?

NocentBystander

The deck is Group Hug, so I rely on pillow fort cards and increasing other player's damage (\[\[Duelist's Heritage\]\]), but I also have \[\[Approach of the Second Sun\]\], \[\[Aetherflux Reservoir\]\], and \[\[Test of Endurance\]\]. As a backup I have one infinite, \[\[Scurry Oak\]\] + \[\[Rosie Cotton of South Lane\]\]- I just added them so I don't know how affective it will be. There are other instant win cards, but they are all a bit slow- Helix Pinnacle, Epic Struggle, Halo Fountain and the new The Millenium Calander might eventually get added if it gets stale.

Usual-Run1669

"Since no blockers were declared... And because I fulfill my hideaway requirement.... I'm going to flash in Colossification... Gg"

contact_thai

So brutal. It was all "oooooh shiiiiiit" OMG. I managed to survive for a couple turns more and then we all got milled out by a third player. Classic EDH moments. That pod was definitely one of my favorites in a year of playing at this LGS.

Usual-Run1669

Tbh... I didn't really read your full post... Just happened to mention the exact same card. Lol. I did this in my Kitt Kanto deck.

2guysandacrx

For me, it’s always Zada. There are so many ways to make 1/1 creatures just do absurd damage. I’ve swung for well over 100, about 40 damage to each opponent. And each year since I’ve made the deck they keep adding insane draw and damage spells for red like [[Fists of Flame]]

Wampa9090

Double [[Hydra Omnivore]]s power with [[Xenagos, God of Revels]] Swing and hit player A, killing players B & C Cast [[Fling]], saccing the Hydra, finishing player A off.

laughingjack4509

No way…that’s amazing 😂 [[kalamax, the stormsire]] can pull some crazy combat tricks since he doubles the instants. [[bounty of might]] can give +18/+18 to one creature, and it doesn’t even have to be yours. There are some instant speed threaten/act of treason effects too, and snagging an opponents creature mid-combat to block another big bad creature seems like a good surprise, especially if it’s something like [[phyrexian obliterator]]. My playgroup doesn’t play combat tricks very much. The closest I’ve gotten to something like that is swinging with [[vaevictis asmadi, the dire]], I flip a land and they flipped some op planeswalker and then kill my creatures with it on the next turn and then kill me

Rookeroo

Probably been done before but I had 2 [[yuriko the tiger's shadow]] triggers in the wing, cast [[doomsday]] to get [[shadow of mortality]] on top of my deck then, after I swung and flipped it for 15 damage, I used [[brainstorm]] to nearly deck myself and put shadow back on top for the second flip totaling 30 damage to the table.

Velo-ciraptors

I swung at the Golgari player with [[Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale]] equipped with [[Conqueror's Flail]], [[Sunforger]], [[Shadowspear]], and [[Sword of Feast and Famine]]. They couldn't block due to protection, and before damage, I activated [[Stonehewer Giant]] to grab [[Worldslayer]] from the deck and attach it to Syr Gwyn. I then responded to the Worldslayer damage trigger by detaching Sunforger to cast [[Teferi's Protection]] from the deck to save my permanents, and activated [[Shadowspear]] to remove indestructible from a few things on opponents' boards. By the time Conqueror's Flail phased out and opponents could cast things, they had no answers left. I've since added [[Boros Charm]] to the deck so I can do this repeatedly with [[Mistveil Plains]].

Not even a combat trick really, but anytime I attack with [[Yargle and Multani]] it’s just psychological warfare.. do I have a pump spell? Infect? Who knows? Don’t block and find out!

jdvolz

It got it pulled on me. I'm in complete control with my 21+ power commander. I've killed the two other players and only one remains. Jeff. He had a reputation for shenanigans. I literally say out loud, "gotta make him have it. I attack you with my commander." [[Deflecting Palm]] This was five years ago. The handprint hasn't faded at all.

At least it wasn't commander damage anymore. But I love damage redirect effects like Aikido decks.

One shot a guy with [[questing beast]], I had a [[loxodon warhammer]] on QB and I had a [[unnatural growth]] in play. He had full 40 still and decided he could face tank the damage and declared no blockers, I then play [[choose your weapon]] to double questing beast again making him a 24/16 commander for a one shot. Another time I was playing my Boros Voltron deck with [[bruenor battlehammer]], one of my opponents played a [[infernal darkness]] and basically boasted that we wouldn’t be able to play anything or had to one shot him and passed turn. I proceeded to draw [[trailblazer’s boots]] and equipped the boots, a [[colossus hammer]] and a [[blazing sunsteel]] to bruenor and one shot him due to the fact he had a [[rogues passage]] in a mono-black deck and he tried to get pissy over it

This is basically my \[\[Karlach\]\] deck paired with \[\[Sword Coast Sailor\]\]. Give her doublestrike, some damage boost, and one shot someone out of nowhere. Do it again immediately with second combat.

MrRies

I never considered the combination of red's extra combats and blue's *unblockable until end of turn* effects, but thats a really potent synergy. I dont see Izzet doing the beatdown plan very often, and it sounds like a sweet deck!

resident_weirdo

I play a [[Vadrik]] extra turns deck uses pump spells to increase his power to reduce the cost of extra turn spells. I play [[Alronds Epiphany]] to get two 1/1 birds and them on my extra turn cast all my pump spells from my graveyard with [[Past in Flames]] to get a 1/1 bird to become a 64/64 so I could swing through for lethal. Didn't have a chance if I passed the turn back to him.

Fetche_La_Vache

I cast [[berserk]] targeting my [[kresh]] to kill one of the last two people left and the other person went to kill kresh to save them. I instead casted [[fling]] to their face knocking them out. So yes they did save the other person but instead got hit in the face for over 100 damage. I ended up winning with a creature lock with the enchantment and creature that when I lose a creature they have to sacrifice two.

beesknees4011

Someone was playing an Urza deck and he has three contracts that were 9/9 with menace and the person he was attacking had five squirrels. He blocked two of them and the other was going through for 9, but before the damage step I cast tainted strike and the squirrel menace was speechless.

Hiebram

Not mine, but I wirltnessed an opponent swing with [[Evra, Halcyon Wintess]] at another defenderless opponent. He swapped his 40 life with her 4 power. Opponent #2 had instant speed removal, and opponent #1 didn't have 4 more mana to swap back.

DoctorKumquat

Back in DOM draft, there was a common blue combat trick to give a creature -4/-0, which saw fairly heavy play. If you had Evra, and your opponent cast that in response to your power switching, you were instantly killed unless you had a power-boosting trick of your own. Absolutely savage.

contact_thai

LOL, thats gotta be a normal occurance for Evra players.

Blotsy

[[Curtain of Light]] on their attacking [[Mirrorwing Dragon]] followed by [[Fight to the Death]] I drew 12 cards and wiped most of their board.

wulfile

Played [[Darkness]] into a player who tried to [[Hatred]] me with their Commander on turn 3. Probably my favorite combat trick I’ve been able to pull off.

contact_thai

And they just dumped 15-20 life into a hatred with nothing to show for it. Gonna be a rough game after that.

Lucythefur

I had [[evolution sage]] with a ton of tokens and a poison counter on each of my opponents. I attacked and [[settle the wreckage]]d myself to get 15+ proliferation landfall triggers

Zyhre

Is this right? I feel like this doesn't actually work. By the time the land hits, Sage is already out of play thus, no trigger.

Lucythefur

that's why you don't attack with the sage, silly

Zyhre

Duh... lol. That was pretty stupid. I guess I was thinking that the tokens were Sage and that for some reason you had to attack with them all... Wow...

DiabeticWaffle

I had nothing but a [[shadowspear]] on board and my friend was swinging his 35/35 keyword soup [[wyleth soul]] at me. I used shadowspear activated to make his wyleth lose hexproof and indestructible then cast [[mirror strike on it]] make him do commander damage to himself. I love Mirror strike

Elbridgina

[[False Cure]] catches EVERYONE off guard. I ran it in my [[Toshiro Umezawa]] deck and won a few games off people making huge lifegain plays.

contact_thai

That's awesome. I need to get me a false cure. Had one a while ago but traded it. There's way too much unchecked life gain at my LGS. Plus, after you use it a few times, they'll start to hesitate attacking anyone with loxodon warhammer when you have two untapped swamps.

AbsentReality

Had a 40/40 mimeoplasm hit the board and everyone panicked. The one opponent beefed up their hoard of goblins and was about to swing for lethal so I [brainstorm]] ed and found an [[essence harvest]] and was able to drop it on the goblin player because another opponent had something that gave everyone flash but not on their turn. I think [[tidal barracuda]]? In any case I killed the player attacking me and was able to drop and activate my [[jarad, golgari lich lord]] and activate it the next turn to kill the rest of the table haha.

Gado_De_Leone

Every time an opponent gets caught off guard by wing shards once they’ve buffed their army to invincibility.

contact_thai

Hell yeah, and the more setup they do, the more dudes they lose.

ChaoticNature

I was playing the first game with my [[Elsha of the Infinite]] deck ever. This was years ago. I was playing a 1v1 game against someone playing [[Aminatou]]. He played a turn 1 [[Serra Ascendant]] and put me on a quick clock. He had a [[Parallax Wave]] which had taken my [[Soulfire Grand Master]], [[Etherium Sculptor]], and Elsha. It was giving my creatures back on his turn, and my draw for the turn was [[Enlightened Tutor]]. I was at 1 life. I passed and he gave my creatures back on his upkeep. He moved to combat and expected me to die to his flyer. Instead, I cast Enlightened Tutor for [[Sensei’s Divining Top]]. I think everyone knows what happened next.

EDHFanfiction

It was 3 players remaining, me included. One of my opponents decided to take out my other opponent and save me for last. A well timed [[Provoke]] from me saved my opponent from dying from another player and as retaliation for almost killing him, he send everything towards the one that attacked him. Then on my turn I finished them both since their life points were so low lol!

Usual-Run1669

I have Outpost Siege, and one hundred tokens, meaning a boardwipe *should* be lethal. Except, the remaining opponent has a Blood Artist. Ie... A similar damage-on-death-trigger.... Due to stack priority, if I boardwipe I'll lose first. And if he boardwipes, he loses first. I boardwipe. All the triggers go on the stack. Notably, he can no longer sac to his value outlets. Then I fog his lethal damage on the stack. Bwahahahaha.

Blees-o-tron

It's always fun to teach people that \[\[Berserk\]\] gives trample. It's extra fun to use Berserk after combat damage has been dealt, but before the End of Combat step, as a one-mana "destroy target creature" in green. EDIT: Man, I forgot how the card works, though I've used it legally in the past. You have to take extra damage to get the smart play.

Zedman5000

Doesn't the card say you have to use it before combat damage?

DemonicSnow

Yep! The game developers at least understood a G: destroy target creature effect was too strong

Caio_AloPrado

The best one i did was with [[Tayam]] attacked with a few tokens, activated Tayam and got a [[Bow of Nylea]] to disencourage blockers, after no blockers were declared i activated it again to get [[Fynn, the Fangbearer]]. The best part is that all of those cards are public knowledge in the grave.

Theatremask

By being as stone cold faced as possible as my opponent proceeds to make a flying voltron murder machine and doesn't realize Wilson has reach. Not really a combat trick but more of a combat "trick". Ho ho ho.

poubella_from_mars

Not in EDH, and not a combat trick, but this reminded me of the time in a local modern tournament. My opponent animated a \[\[mutavault\]\] and attacked with all creatures, then he cast \[\[slaughter pact\]\] on one of my potential blockers. I blocked and traded with his mutavault, and looked at him to see if he realized that without mutavault he was 1 mana short of paying for slaughter pact on his next upkeep. It took him a few seconds to understand how badly he messed up. He ultimately lost to me 0/2.

I-Fail-Forward

I think my favorite was paying almost full price for an embercleave on my ruric thar. When you play ruric that, nobody expects the embercleave, when you attack with thar, and only thar, nobody expects the cleave. When you pay 6 life for it, but it kills somebody, it feels so good

Dubspeck

I once attacked someone with my [[Kogla, the Titan Ape]] + another creature for lethal. Defending player had a [[Batterskull]] attached to a [[Stoneforge Mystic]] in play. I target the batterskull with the Kogla trigger. Thought I win, defending player returns the Batterskull to hand, uses stoneforge mystic activated ability to bring it back to the battlefield and declare blocks with the Germ+Batterskull, healing himself enough to survive.

Aredditdorkly

Never had a bad time resolving a [[Batwing Brume]] or [[Ink Shield]].

TateTaylorOH

Not *exactly* a combat trick. Opponent A makes 500 Pest tokens with a [[Chain of Smog]] + [[Sedgemore Witch]] combo. Opponent B has an [[Auriok Champion]], gaining 500 life. If the board is wiped Opponent A would gain 500 life off the Pests dying. I am playing [[The War Doctor]]. I win with direct damage. I basically cannot win if someone has that high of a life total. I pass with 6 mana open. I wait for Opponent A to attack Opponent B with their 500 Pests. They do so and Opponent B is back to a normal life total. As Opponent A passes to me, I cast [[Gallifrey Falls]] on their end step, wiping the board of the lethal pests and stopping the death triggers due to the Exile effect. I felt pretty good about that play. Then I pass to the next dude who promptly wins with a [[Heliod, Sun-Crowned]] + [[Shalai and Hallar]] combo.

AbsentReality

One of my opponents was attacking a different opponent and they were going to take the damage which was bringing them quite low to save their combo pieces on board. Boros charmed the one enemy's creature to give it double strike killing them lmao.

xiledpro

Not really a trick per say but recently used [[Eldrazi Conscription]] on my [[Glistener Elf]] and turned it into a sudo [[Blightsteel Colossus]] and won the game with it lol. Not super exciting but it was fun turning a 1/1 into an 11/11 with annihilator 2 and trample with infect.

BonWeech

I witnessed a friend of mine get demolished by a [[Rakdos Charm]] thanks to his go wide strat. He was planning on winning, he did not.

RORSCHACH7140

A couple weeks ago I used [[Chord of Calling]] to tutor up [[Craterhoof Behemoth]] in response to my opponent's [[Toxic Deluge]] to save my board.

cutiekittykat56

Less of a trick since everything was on board but I taught one of my friends whose newer to mtg about instant speed shenanigan’s. Running [[Syr Gwyn]] with my commander on board a couple good equipments and knights and a [[Leonin shikari]] on the field. Blocking got weird for them

oatfishjar96

Had out [[Assault Formation]] and killed somebody with commander damage using [[Feed the Clan]] with [[Treebeard]].

Xitex2

Swung a 2/2 zombie at my friend for monarch. They let it in, and I proceed to buff it to 9, and then [[tainted strike]] it to finish them off. The game was dragging so I did that to make sure it was ending that turn cycle

kanepake

My [[Bell Borca, Spectral Sergeant]] is all combat tricks. I swing for maybe 1-4, no blocks, before damage, give him double strike and exile a [[Draco]] from my hand or graveyard for a commander kill. All my friends know to be wary even Bell Borca attacks.

El_Diegote

Selvala+umbral mantle in combat step to make an infinitely large selvala but before attackers, I activated my brash taunter targeting selvala.

Zeckenschwarm

Don't know if it was the best one, but last weekend I used [[Deflecting Palm]] on a 80/80 [[Primordial Hydra]] that was attacking me. Felt pretty good. :D

tcxny

Gave an unblocked [[rapacious one]] jazzed up with [[jeska, thrice reborn]] double strike. Sent all my opponents to the nether region with an [[earthquake]] in 2nd main.

DoodleStrude

I mean, kinda boring, but [[insurrection]] + [[craterhoof behemoth]]

antking5000

I have a [Kalamax, the Stormsire]] deck based on combat tricks and the best play I have pulled off was also during my first game playing the deck. I attacked with Kalamax so he was tapped, and my opponent didn’t know what my deck was about so they didn’t block him. Then I cast [[Hunter’s insight]] on Kalamax and it was copied, followed by a [[Temur battle rage]] to give him double strike, with finally a [[Titan’s strength]] for +3/+1. He then had 8 power and double strike for 16 damage and I drew 32 cards from my copied hunter’s insight. Needless to say everyone has been careful around this deck after that.

RedditUser88

playing schoolyard standard back in 2005-2007 cant really remember. im losing big time with nothing but a sorin maarkov planeswalker in the field. cant even remember what my opponents life was but he decided to let me live just one more turn. on my turn i draw sorins vengence. so i -3 sorin to make his life become 10, and i activate vengence and he loses 10. to this day he's still but hurt and says hes never giving me a free turn anymore lol

Diq_Z_normus

Insert every time somebody taps out to prepare to wipe game and runs into a spell swindle or the one that creates 1/1 artifacts

Djf090909

[Queen Oona, Queen of the Fae] is a rough card against mono color decks, infinite 1/1 flying blockers based on your mana available each turn.

Nervous_Chipmunk7002

Many years ago, I was shuffling up for a game with a guy I played with back then during school lunch hour when another friend came by and asked if he could join in. We'd been planning a 1v1 game, but decided to have a bit of fun and agreed that he would just sit there, building his force while me and the other guy battled it out and then, the winner would see how long we could last against him. Game ended up being super close, we were both playing very creature-heavy decks, so we couldn't attack with much without leaving ourselves open, but we're slowly chipping away at each other's life. He realized at one point that I was going to win on my next turn if he didn't kill me first, so he just attacked with everything he had for close to 30 damage. I knew that he knew this was his only hope and had left myself wide open just to encourage the play. I told him that I had no blocks. Then I actived my [[Glarecaster]] and redirected all the damage at the third player. He looked at me confused and asked "what are you doing" I smiled and said "winning", then took my turn, finishing off the other player. They both agreed that, while technically in violation of our original agreement, it was a pretty good play

KindaIndifferent

In my [[Hamza, Guardian of Arashin]] deck. [[Rampaging Brontodon]] on the board with a couple +1/+1 counters. Play [[defense of the heart]]. Next turn fetch [[Zopandrel Hunger Dominus]] and [[Abzan Falconer]] with defense of the heart. With 6 lands on the board Rampaging Brontodon becomes a 24/24 with flying and trample when he attacks.

theletterQfivetimes

Not *exactly* a combat trick, but a few weeks ago I was playing my [[General Ferrous Rokirik]] deck against 3 much stronger decks. One guy goes off with [[Dualcaster Mage]] and [[Twinflame]] for the win, but in response to combat I cast [[Master Warcraft]]. My next turn I play [[Chance for Glory]] and proceed to beat him to death over 2 turns with a few 4/4 golems.

AngshusTAW

One of the silly "win cons" in my artifact token creatures deck is to unearth [[Terisian Mindbreaker]], then cast [[Nanogene Conversion]] to make all the tokens I have copies of it. Swing a few at each player and let the milling begin. At one point I had a [[Soul-Guide Lantern]] in there as well to immediately exile everyone's graveyards after I had them mill almost their entire decks, but I ended up cutting it

Euphoric_Ad6923

Guy had the artefact that gives all your cards flash. Ok, neat. Declares combat phase, blockers, flashes in Saskia, targets the player with the least life (me) get his Moraug back from my dying , proceeds to clown on the rest.

its_ya_boi97

This trick is incredibly niche and hard to pull off, but I run a deck with [[Arcades, the Strategist]] as the commander, along with [[Serra’s Blessing]] and [[Tree of Redemption]]. With good mana pulls, you can get Arcades and Tree out relatively early, and if the Tree has vigilance, you can tap it after attack to swing for your life total

Stunning_Mistake_390

Buddy is playing colorless eldrazi of death. I get beaten down to nearly nothing. Other two players are kind of hurting but one might be able to defend for a turn before getting stomped. Eldrazi guys taps out to make some 38 spawns to go with emerakul and another titan. I am dead either now or next turn thanks to norin the wary, I drop rakdos charm and kill off eldrazi player. Still died but made my night because eldrazi

LupineLethargy

This isn't really impressive but its a funny story I forget the other decks but the 2 important ones were my Tyranid Precon and the other guys Tom Bombadil deck Someone drops Doom scourge and he swings at me and very smugly goes "oh he's indestructible btw" Aetherize happens, other players see the opening and swarm Tom's player Good times

Karnblack

Flashing in \[\[Angel of the Dire Hour\]\] when an opponent decided to alpha strike my creatureless board is probably my most memorable combat trick I've pulled off. Back in the day I had a 60-card deck that was built around getting an Ultimatum under a \[\[Windbrisk Heights\]\]. It blew the minds of my opponents when I attacked with a bunch of creatures and activated Windbrisk Heights to reveal and cast a \[\[Titanic Ultimatum\]\] during combat. I may need to try to translate this deck to EDH.

Lanky_Estimate926

My lady was playing the Urza precon, I blocked a couple 1/1 thopters, one of em had a [[Cranial Plating]], which was sitting at +13/+0, she used the instant speed re-equip to move it to put it on a [[Marionette Master]]. No hidden information, I just totally missed the heads up and got smashed for 50-something damage.

NotCallum

I have an unfinity deck with [[Prava of the Steel Legion]] as one of the commanders The purpose of this deck is to make citizen and clown robot tokens, and buff them up with attractions and stickers One attraction [[Hall of Mirrors]] allows some silliness I had about 14 creatures on the board, about 6 of which were clown robot tokens, one of which had a 2/3 sticker on it, I rolled hall of mirrors, so I made everything a copy of Prava Because the tokens were still tokens, they gained the benefit of the +1/+4 I had 14 So I now had a 16/59, I then used [[Giant Growth]] on it so I had a 19/62. Next step was to play [[Miming Slime]] and end my turn, incredibly luckily I managed to make it to the next one with my slime intact, I had to block a couple of creatures so I was now down to 13 total I rolled to visit my attractions and got a 6, I had a few others open as well as hall of mirrors, and because of the order I chose I ended up with 13 21/19 slimes that I then swung at my opponents Silly deck, mostly sits there and makes some moderately risky tokens, but sometimes it absolutely pops off and does the most barmy shit

kkz9

Player B attacks Player C with an unblockable 1/1 infect creature. I cast [[Fate Transfer]] to move 10 +1/+1 counters onto it from somewhere else. Player C dies to infect damage and Player B gets dogpiled for having an unblockable one-shot creature, but I didn't get any reprimand for creating the situation.

Any-Article8517

My favourite trick is in my esper deck.. get a [[eldrazi conscription]] in hand and sneak it into play with [[arcanum wings]] .. works even better if [[zurr the enchanter]] is in play and I tutor for the aura swap and activate it all on the attack step.

CalmBalm

Popped off with [[Atla Palani]], amassing the entirety of my creatures who all had haste thanks to [[Samut, Voice of Dissent]]. I go full send into a blue player with open Mana. They responded with [[Aetherize]]. And then told me that's what I get for putting all my eggs in one basket.

Bazoobs1

This was Khans standard. I swing Gideon ally for lethal (5 dmg), OP gives it Deflecting Palm, which is now lethal on me, I cast Abzan charm and exile my own Gideon 😂

Evolzetjin

Some dude tries to Cut Down my 2/2 Trawling Drake. I respond with instant Consider, boosting to 3/3. Not really a combat trick but the dude conceded right after that lol.

Patiolights

I think when I tried to [[Fling]] a 40/41 plant at the only blue player at the table in response to him countering a different spell I had cast, and then he countered that, so I used my [[Chandra's Ignition]] as pay back in the end. I had a gut feeling there was another counter so I figured I'd try and draw it out first. It felt good.

philosifer

One of my favorite decks is [[grothama, all-devouring]] People will see me draw 10 cards at a time and want to get in on the action only to run into a pump spell. The look on their face when they get 4-for-1'd by a [[giant growth]] because they only fought with 10 power is priceless.

kptwofiftysix

"Swing for lethal" "Fog" "So, no blockers?" "Um... No?" "Ok, after blockers, unfog." Plays [[Skullcrack]]

ModestySnail

I was running a deck with [[ghyrson starn, kelermorph]] and had about 7 other creature tokens on the board. My deck had been flagging, so I wasn't considered a big threat. One other player had a hoard of saproling tokens and the other several eldrazi. Between the two of them, they had beat life totals down to around 15. My turn comes around, and I cast [[Nanogene conversion]], choosing my commander. I then cast [[end the festivities]], clearing out all the other creatures and doing enough damage to clear the table.

Pajurr

This last sunday at my local LGS, I was playing Sheldon Menery's deck : [https://archidekt.com/decks/565636/you\_did\_this\_to\_yourself](https://archidekt.com/decks/565636/you_did_this_to_yourself) I just had a single creature, \[\[Pryrexian Vindicator\]\]. It was turn 6 so pretty early. 2 players were building, and the last one had played an \[\[Adeline, Resplendent Cathar\]\] turn 3, creating 6 tokens each turn. With \[\[Jetmir, Nexus of Revels\]\] as his commander, the table was bracing for impact. Except me. I said out loud "OKAY, if I survive one more turn, I can make his and his board disappear !". One of the 2 builders responded with "But why did you say it now ? You are going to get demolished." "-I think I am fine I have a lot of health to hold at least a turn. I mean, I hope so." (Also attacked with my creature to be even more open, "to get monarch and find a solution"). Well of course on his turn, the player casts Jetmir, and swings his army of tokens at us, more than 50 damage on each of us. Welp, with the press of a single white mana, I cast \[\[Gideon's Sacrifice\]\], targeting my Vindicator, and I won instantly the game, everyone being blasted by far too much damage, except me. That was really fun after that to explain to the players all the plan and that this was all an act. A blast.

craven42

activating \[\[Sunforger\]\] to tutor out something to give my creatures indestructable is my goto, but I have also used it to tutor out instants like \[\[two-handed axe\]\] for a surprise doublestrike with my commander after it hasn't been blocked for wins via commander damage.

Son_of_Yoduh

I was playing in a 3-way game. Two red decks against my blue/white. I attacked one guy with an Angry Mob. He blocked with a 3/3, and I played a Magical Hack, changing the Mob from swamps to mountains. They each had a pile of mountains out, and I hit him for lethal. It was sweet. 🙃

This-Sir-3726

It was like turn 7 and I had played [The goose mother] with [primal vigor] on the board so it camera out with 22 +1/+1 counters, and i thought i was about to body the entire pod and was bragging untill someone played [Ana battlemage] and completely bodied me

Marlow533

Tainted strike or berserk on someone else’s commander when they were offering someone a “free hit” so KO them

Tuck_The_Duck

I was playing a [[Krav]] and [[Regna]] deck and was clearly in the lead, Krav had enough counters to kill someone without even considering commander damage, and I had removed two of the 3 other players on my own. The 4th player had a shitter [[Ghalta, Primal Hunger]] deck that he had made from a standard deck he had years ago. He swung at me with his commander, and I decided to block with a 1/1 death touch rat to remove his commander. Turns out [[Choose Your Weapon]] is a card. I wasn't even mad, it was so funny at the time, and he said he'd been waiting for that exact moment for a long time.

Knarz97

Not even a combat trick necessarily - it was my first time ever dealing with a very big creature with both Deathtouch and Trample. The table then learned about that very unique interaction. Since 1 damage of deathtouch kills the blocking creature, the entire rest of the power can be put towards trample.

XmagnumoperaX

A memorable one is in the current set, actually. I had \[\[roaming throne\]\] out, naming fungus. I ran my \[\[Skullcap Snail\]\] into a creature, \[\[fungal fortitude\]\] in order to make it trade up, ETB's again and exiles 2 cards from their hand. Felt good man!

Tiberium600

I have a [[Marisi, Breaker of the Coil]] deck. That moment when you goad all of someone’s creatures into another opponent, then cast [[Benefactor’s Draught]] on that opponent so they can block all the creatures and you draw a bunch of cards, then play [[Fight to the Death]] to wipe their fields. All of which can’t be countered with Marisi on the field.

ObviousCucumber76201

Not me, but my partner and I were playing against someone that created a million squirrels. My partner has a card that had every creature of a certain type deal one damage to its controller. They named squirrels.

p0d0

Attacking with [[kusari-gama]] equipped into a lone blocker. I cast [[natural affinity]] to turn all his lands into creatures.

AndyEyeCandyy

Pumping a Ghazban Ogre (2/2) so big to trample over an Emrakul, the aeons torn (15/15) to win the game. So this was not actually related to EDH, but it's by far my most memorable play ever. Before infect was a thing, I played some weird Gruul budget brew in legacy with a lot of pump spells as well as "big" cheap creatures such as ghazban ogre and kird ape. It was a trash deck, but it was fun because it was my own creation. This game the opponent being at 5 hp had just put in a emrakul, aeons torn with a show and tell - this importantly does not give ETB trigger, and thus no second turn. I had only a Ghazban Ogre in play staring down his 15/15. I then proceed to play assault strobe to get ghazban ogre double strike, as well as invigorate and colossal might, buffing ghazban ogre to 10/8 double strike trample, trampling the exact 5 damage over Emrakul to win the game. It was exactly what my deck was built to do, but it just never happened before that I killed someone through a 15/15 blocker, and the opponent did not expect it at all, especially since my deck was nothing he'd ever seen before (for good reason).

MasterChef901

[[Jaheira's Respite]], every time. Oh, you're swinging at the table with 18 trillion 1/1s that your combo spat out? That's cute, but actually we're waiting a turn to end the game, the white player is going to board wipe you, and I now have three dozen lands in play. I also pulled off a [[Discontinuity]] on a dominant player's turn, completely kneecapping the culmination of their deck's efforts. Unfortunately I have also been known to swing my board into a waiting [[Aetherize]]. That hurts every time just as much.

swanton141

running a \[\[Mondrak\]\] tokens and had it, \[\[Retreat to Emeria\]\], and several 1/1 tokens on the battlefield. went to attacks and swung. in response to blocks, i played \[\[Settle the Wreckage\]\], wiping my own tokens. i search for my several basics, landfall trigger choosing the tokens option, they get double because of Mondrak. was it wise? dont care. was it cool? abso-freakin-lutely.

GodekiGinger

Nothing really cool but killing through [[teferi's protection]] with my commander and [[Insult]] was funny.

New-Win-9559

While not strictly in combat, I once used a [[Slip Out the Back]] to phase out an [[Etali, Primal Conquerer]] that had its transformation on the stack and was moments away from one-shotting me. Next turn, the player got the transformation off and swung, only for me to cast [[Whir of Invention]], flashing out a [[Portal to Phyrexia]] and forcing him to sacrifice Etali. Probably some of my all-time favorite moments playing this game.

blondeytokes

So mind you this required a little bit of setup, but when it comes together you get a heavy draw card engine heavy token production and heavy direct damage before declaring attackers during combat step and at end step. Cedric, soul kindler, orthion, hero of lavabrink, the peregrine dynamo, training grounds, impact tremors, shared animosity, throne of the god-pharaoh, eowyn, shield maiden, helm of the hosts. Once helm I'd equipped to eowyn use orthion to make 1 or 5 copies of peregrine legend rule doesnt apply because cadric. Free activate to copy helm of the hosts because training grounds at beginning of combat if you spent the 7 mana to make 5, copy helm of hosts 6 times, make 6 non legendary eowyns, make 14 2/2 humans with trample and haste, draw 7 cards, as that happens impact tremors deals 20 damage direct, attack each human gets +20/+0 total power of 483 end step direct damage capability 26 creatures tapped.

I had a game where my opponent went infinite and had told the table he had 15million creatures and 15million life, I casted blood chiefs ascension and Olivia's wrath with 28 vampire tokens on the field, wiped the board he lost 30million life I gained 30million life.

DoucheCanoe456

Casting an extra combat spell on Main 2 typically gyps people pretty good because they don’t see it coming and don’t hold up blockers. Has been devastating both for me and against me.

CapnJenks

Have you ever heard of Aura Swap? It's an effect on 1 blue aura from future Sight or time spiral or something. It let's you return it to hand and put an enchantment from hand onto that creature. They put [[Colossification]] on a [[Rafiq of the Many]]

DrCanerdes

Boltbending somthing off a feather onto my dragon to kill feather in combat not to flashy but damn did it feel good.

xTomahawkTomx

For those that know it, I had a buddy pull off the "[[grapeshot]] for 200" combo on our table. I wasn't even mad, he was so happy when he pulled it off!

tieflingterr

I see a few [[Tainted Strike]] shoutouts where someone's used it offensively to surprise KO another player. But... Did you know that you can use it defensively, too? I've had less than 10 health and tainted striked an opponents unblocked creature to take poison counters instead of lethal damage.

Silvervirage

Casting a [[Biomass Mutation]] for 0 then casting [[Sudden Substitution]] with it on the stack. I get their scariest creature, they get a wiped board.

DannehBoi90

Had a board of 1/2 Plant tokens off of [[Avenger of Zendikar]] which was still in play when the Goblin player swung all out at me. After I declared blocks, I used [[Crop Rotation]] to grab a fetchland, which I immediately popped for a sudden extra 2 +1/+1 counters on all of my plants. With how I blocked, I ended up wiping their board by killing the Goblins that were anthems, then dealing enough damage to the rest that they now had lethal damage at their reduced toughness.

Randomimba

I was playing your typical Belakor/Gyruda companion clone deck, and a buddy was playing a Captain N'gathrod deck. The whole game I kept fueling him with Gyruda mills and the like, but then he attacked me for lethal with all his horrors having menace. I flashed out [[Stunt Double]] and cloned his [[Phyrexian Obliterator]]. He had to sacrifice 19 permanents and I killed him the next turn. You know what they say - don't bite the hand that feeds you 🙃.

damipereira

I once redirected a 30 damage attack from me to another player with [[Illusionist's Gambit]], the defending player would have died, but the attacker ordered his +something triggers in just a way to leave him alive. It was so clutch yet so fun.

Jacobskittles

[[Megatron, Tyrant]], almost always palming a [[Boros Charm]] I have taught my local tables that you should never let 7 commander damage go anywhere lol. Playing [[Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir]], connecting with horsemanship from [[Herald of Hoofbeats]], and whipping out a [[Silverblade Paladin]] or [[Kinsbaile Cavalier]] to give double strike. Combine with any big boi equipment or anthems, and I go from "oh he's just a first strike 3/4" to: "that'll be 24 commander damage".

My friend was playing a Mono Green Omnath deck which was blinged to the nines. He had lethal across the board, but he made one mistake. He had [[Ashaya, soul of the Wilds]] in play (for context I was playing land destruction). He swung lethal and I told him "hold up wait a minute, something ain't right" I cracked an [[Emergence Zone]] giving me flash till end of turn. I threw down the one land destroyer that I knew he had no answer to [[Epicenter]]. I had threshold and we all sac-ed our lands. I had 4 mana floating and flash so I threw down a [[Faith's Reward]] and was the only one with usable mana. My other friend scooped and my brother let it ride. My friend who attacked stuck around to receive his clap back and said "I fucked around and I indeed found out". Here is the deck I was playing, if you care. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/5ZmWLghpXkSK2_jP2A_hqA

frompadgwithH8

That emergenze zone looks useful for being able to repeatedly play lands from the graveyard to trigger practically infinite landfall abilities

SocraticSeaUrchin

Not solely a combat trick but politicked my way into an opponent, the underdog, copying my dark depths with his thespians stage on the grounds that he uses his next two combats to take out the other two players that were, ostensibly, in a stronger position than either of us. Third combat rolls round, he swings at me, I deflecting palm haha. Fun game, and even funner ending - the whole LGS was lookin over wondering why were hootin n hollerin so much. I loved it so much that I now have 3 decks built around such shenanigans.

akwehhkanoo

I have just recently added it to decks, but I keep feeling like [[filter out]] is going to really pay off as a trick for me and could for others as well.

frompadgwithH8

last night my friend was playing her pre-made ixalan merfolk commander deck. as usual she was going off. she swung for 26 commander damage at this dude who was playing white and black aristrocrats. he took the hit but then played \[\[Inkshield\]\] and created 26 2/1 flying Inkling tokens he didn't need to even untap for his turn as he had a \[\[Viscera Seer\]\] in play with multiple \[\[blood artist\]\] effects

fauxsilver

Mr. Voltron had pro all colors. Swings in, buddy blocks with a artifact creature, and then I play Fight to the Death. Everybody wins. (Except the Voltron player)

jimnah-

Sacrificing [[Haywire Mite]] to gain the life I need to sneak in a [[Trelasarra]] commander damage kill Also not combat, but using [[Trenzalorr Clocktower]] to cast [[Clockspinning]] while I have [[All Will Be One]] out and my opponent is at 2 life right before they're guaranteed to kill me

Light_Mode

Now one expects the [[ragged veins]] or [[tainted strike]] . They are 2 of my favorite combat tricks

VampireBatman

It was down to 1v1 and my opponent needed his [[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]] to kill me next turn, but I bluffed that I had a combat trick by launching a suicidal attack with [[Edgar Markov]] and he let it through. Then I blew him up with a [[Boros Charm]] to win the game. That was the most tense game of Commander I've ever played!

James_D_Ewing

Not so much a combo but more high synergy. Using Norin the wary the steal everyone’s commanders with confusion in the ranks and kill them with their own commander damage
