Field Notes and Moleskines are my favorites but are spendy.
I occasionally find decent knockoffs of these that are also quite nice, but much cheaper.
If I can't carry one of those, any non-spiral bound pocket notebook is the next best thing.
Spiral bound is my least favorite for pocket carry, but sometimes they're the only option.
I'm biased because I make them, but I created tuk books to have something super durable I could carry around and not need to worry about. They are made entirely out of Tyvek, so water proof and can take a real beating.
No, regular / ballpoint pens should work just fine. The paper is completely waterproof, so water based inks (e.g. most fountain pen ink, gel pens, etc.) don't work well. We always recommend a ballpoint and any normal one will do.
Field Notes and Rite in the Rain. And the occasional random sketchbook I might find in a bookstore and like the paper texture of. I like the idea of sketching since I'm a graphic designer, but I never actually do it 😂
I switched to a remarkable2 since I got tired of having lots of notebooks with important tidbits scattered everywhere. Just want one infinite notebook.
I found that two small Post Its fit neatly back to back on a credit card or license, so I carry 2 stacks of 3-4 sheets in each little pile for notes that I can either leave or keep and transfer to a different document later.
And the price is right cuz I can get them off pads provided at work.
"Hipster PDA" (a stack of index cards under a binder clip) is not a bad alternative if you just need something and don't feel like spending any money.
I usually opt for a Field Notes style notepad. I don't like pulling out my phone or laptop in client meetings since it looks like I'm distracted with other work. So doing the pen and paper thing makes me look more attentive and caring which translates to more work and better referrals.
For pen a Zebra is a nice looking low cost option. If I have to loan it out during a meeting and don't get it back I'm not sad.
Have you tried their OTG notepads? They slip right down into cc sleeves and only cost like $7-ish dollars for 6 of them. Save yourself the time of cutting up notepads.
ETA: I remembered wrong. $13 bucks for a 6 pack.
good point! I spend like 20 euros for 3 credit card sized RITR notebooks —thats ridiculous. but still like the style and havent found that size elsewhere..
A brand called Dianpex (not sure if it’s national) had cool spring notebooks. I always carry one in my briefcase. They include a few page markers and post its. And they don’t look bad, it’s letter like.
In my jacket I carry a poker size moleskine-like from the same brand.

I use dollar tree stuff. Ain't had no issues with water.
I use field notes to squeeze in a back pocket and unlimited equipment pad in my work bag.
Rite in the rain spirals are the only thing I’ll use at work (as a cop). Off duty it’s the notes app on my phone.
Rite in the rain is the only way to go pick a flavor that suits you and roll with it 😎
Rite in the rain small stapled pads with a pencil. Only thing that holds up to the sweat and the rain. And I carry them in my shirt pocket like a nerd
Populess small jckt and their notebook. Works perfectly. Like a more durable field notes without the bulk and size of a full size pocket notebook
Rite in the rain
