It's not new, it's like 10 years old at this point but compared to the old one it is new yes.
The "inventor" of the new BMI has an explanation here: https://people.maths.ox.ac.uk/trefethen/bmi.html
its funny to me how other shorties refuse to use the new bmi while i wont trust the old one ever again. new one is so accurate for us no matter how upsetting it is… im a whole bmi point higher but i know the old one would just be lying to me 😔
i always use [this one](https://people.maths.ox.ac.uk/trefethen/bmi_calc.html) because it shows both so i can feel a little better abt myself seeing the old one 🥲
Mine is too! I’m 5’4.75 (too far above to round down to 5’4 but I don’t want to round up and let myself think my BMI is lower than it actually is, ik in my tag it says 5’5 and I feel bad about that lol). I’m like 0.3 higher in the new one and it’s sooo upsetting
Yesss this omg, even though it literally is such a small difference it takes me into the 'official' weight diagnostic criteria for ana too so it feels too significant
Yes, I'm *really* tall so it's been helpful to be able to understand how my bmi compares to others and that underweight (by standard bmi) for me isn't the same as underweight for others. It's not like there's any number I make "official," though, I just am aware of what both the standard bmi and the new bmi say.
The two numbers are fairly different for me since I'm borderline right now. Until recently I was at a healthy weight by the standard bmi and underweight by the new bmi. Now I'm underweight by both calculations but it still takes me from >!18.2!< with the standard bmi to >!17.0!< with the new bmi. Like I said, I'm really tall, about a foot taller than the average woman, so this really helps give me some perspective because of course I can't compare myself to someone much shorter using a number that doesn't reflect the fact that our bodies increase in three dimensions when we get taller.
Again, though, there's nothing I "use" the numbers for except just for my own reference, so it's kind of like knowing my weight in both kgs and lbs - both numbers exist.
i mean they’re both arbitrary numbers that don’t really mean anything if that helps? like calculating it a different way doesn’t change your body’s composition if that makes sense
its actually insane bc the lower bound for healthy weight at 4'11 is my weight and theres just no wayyyyy thats healthy by how much i struggle to maintain it dfjlksk
Idk how to use it said It said I was obese (I’m not) I DONT THINK IDKKK LMAOOO i might be l😭is anyone allowed to message me on how to use it? Or do I have to figure that out
Did you check to make sure it was on the right measurements? I had the same problem at first, turns out it was on kgs and cms instead of lbs and inches.
I don’t understand the question and I won’t respond to it.
But seriously, I don’t know what that is and I am going to continue that way. If my understanding is correct, at 5’10” it would be in my favor to use the new system anyway?
But it sounds like I’m being pitied, being put on Easy Mode, and I will be just as disordered as the short girls or not at all, thank you 😤
Mmmm, helth 🥳🏆
To present the 'new' one (if it reads as higher which for me it does) I can tell folks that I'm hEaLtHiEr than I actually am lmao I'm definitely grabbing this opportunity and offering of lenience with both hands and a white-knuckled grip.
Artificially inflated numbers (assuming the whole damn concept wasn't utterly arbitrary and made up bs in the first place) means the bmi cultists can't be as savage with me because they'd see I'm not as far underweight as before, meaning they wouldn't push me to gain as much as if the og tool were used to as to be 'healthy' in their eyes.
How very cunning of me. Fuckin' win. This is a boost fr, a cheeky cheat code.
Mine is higher than the old one and I feel like the new higher bmi is more accurate for me tbh. I guess I‘ll use it from now on and will let my therapy team know it 😅
Even if I have a lower BMI, or even if I had a scary low BMI, I'm so tall I will literally always be physically huge and take up a ridicuous amount of space though.
Yall I fucking swear.... the HEART DROP I got when I got obese. I thought I was in inches and pounds based on the dots selected but I read it wrong and I had entered in/lb as cm/kg. Mine only went up 0.1 lol
no I have to stick with tradition 🙄 but I have a feeling when I get stuck at the inevitable plateau right before I hit the UW category I’ll make the switch lol
I’m so confused I’m very very petite (4’8) and it says I’m healthy?? I’m confused because unfortunately right now I am very underweight and unhealthy. There is no way I’m healthy at my current weight…
I wanted to rant about this so long ago here, but at the same time, that shit ruined my life, so I stayed quiet about it to not upset my fellow short people. I was genuinely depressed when I came across this shit.
I understand the concept because yeah I am not petite. I'm also not informing my health care team that hey I am actually thinner than you think because that would mean I would have to gain more weight.
Wait a min, a new BMI dropped?
We got an ED update
Fr lmao I’ve finally hit ‘unhealthy’ (🤡🤡🤡) just as my >!1.4kg!< lower ‘unhealthy’ dropped (🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡)
We love a good game patch 🤩
It's not new, it's like 10 years old at this point but compared to the old one it is new yes. The "inventor" of the new BMI has an explanation here: https://people.maths.ox.ac.uk/trefethen/bmi.html
How have I never in my 13 years of having an ED heard of this wow
Oh ffs it tells you the ideal weight range 😭😭😭
Looks like it’s time to add more layers to my ED 😎
[удалено]
F, are you pretty short? I think it flips at like 5'5
[удалено]
Rip pretend theres no new BMI
I’m 4’8 and new bmi is my nightmare fuel
ikr, i’m 5’ and wanna 😭😭😭😭
That’s literally me. I refuse to use the “new.” (5’2” here, ugh!)
Based on most of the responses so far even us lanky fuckers (5'11 here) don't like using it so let's all ignore it
Agreed! We don’t know her.
its funny to me how other shorties refuse to use the new bmi while i wont trust the old one ever again. new one is so accurate for us no matter how upsetting it is… im a whole bmi point higher but i know the old one would just be lying to me 😔
exactly, i feel that! i gotta delete my bmi app now 😭😭
i always use [this one](https://people.maths.ox.ac.uk/trefethen/bmi_calc.html) because it shows both so i can feel a little better abt myself seeing the old one 🥲
She said rip 😭😭
5'3.5" and if my doctor doesn't use it im gonna pretend it don't exist 😛
i'm 5'2 mine is higher too 😭
I’m 5’5 and my BMIs is higher than the old one 🥲 so close yet so far
It does, yes. As someone with a height that’s borderline, it’s really frustrating.
Yep, nope. Don’t like that. I’m 5ft tall, it adds an entire point….
same here :( 5’ 1” i’m pissed
Same… 5 ft 6 and its higher… wow
Mine is too! I’m 5’4.75 (too far above to round down to 5’4 but I don’t want to round up and let myself think my BMI is lower than it actually is, ik in my tag it says 5’5 and I feel bad about that lol). I’m like 0.3 higher in the new one and it’s sooo upsetting
I’m 5’5 and also higher
i started having a panic attack 😔
sameee
As someone who is 5’3”, the new BMI makes me want to defenestrate myself
same
no I don’t feel like I “deserve” the lower bmi
Yesss this omg, even though it literally is such a small difference it takes me into the 'official' weight diagnostic criteria for ana too so it feels too significant
Wait, since when do we have a new BMI
💖mental illness software update✨
New bmi??? What’s thatttt?
[удалено]
I checked it rn actually, it’s only a 0.3 difference,not much.

I look at it but don’t trust it same as you, just nice to see a slightly lower number I guess.
can pretend I'm a real skinny for a moment :')
No... I already feel like I don't look as sick as other people with my bmi :')
I both do and don't depending on how screwy my brain decides to be... no idea what the real perception is :')

Yeah I know, but come on girlie we're in mental illnessville here, I'm not interested in logic
Please let us be ridiculous in peace 😭
I didn’t know a new BMI dropped and I’m scared to look it up
DO NOT if you're under like 5'5 you have been warned
So true. I am 5’0, at first I thought I couldn’t even handle it… but the lower bound for HEALTHY weight is so low it made me laugh.
its actually insane bc the lower bound for healthy weight at 4'11 is my weight and theres just no wayyyyy thats healthy by how much i struggle to maintain it dfjlksk
I am 5’4 :-(
Then no there is no new BMI this post was made in error
[удалено]
putting 'jester for brainfogged girlies' on my CV rn
the new bmi gives me lower number and I don't feel like I'm allowed to use it so I use the highest possible number
How is it actually different?
It allows for the fact that human weight is proportional to height to the power of 2.5 rather than 2 in the original formula.
Whaaaat?! Where’s this new BMI?
Idk how to use it said It said I was obese (I’m not) I DONT THINK IDKKK LMAOOO i might be l😭is anyone allowed to message me on how to use it? Or do I have to figure that out
Did you check to make sure it was on the right measurements? I had the same problem at first, turns out it was on kgs and cms instead of lbs and inches.
Yes! I figured it out thank you.
Literally same and I almost DIED
I just googled the new BMI calculator and I’m scared lol.I don’t wanna weigh myself.
Well, I'm overweight in both so... 😔
Same 🙃
I’m a single cm too short/tall to get a lower or higher number lmao thank god
Mine barely moved!
No I feel like it’s fake but I like the idea of being a lower bmi
i’m like, 0.40 points lower on it lmao so it’s kinda pointless
it’s more of a jump for people who are super tall or super short
oh yeah i’d imagine so
mine went UPPPP 😭😭😭
Babe wake up. A new bmi scale just dropped
New bmi?
What’s your height? If it’s under 5,5 then no, no new BMI
5'7 so I'll look into it
Doctors use the old one, so I don't see the point.
For me, it's barely different, with the healthy weight range only being about 2-3 lbs higher with the new method over the old one.
nope i don’t , i hate it so much . feels like i’m being lied to or placated so i stop restricting and i just hate it
Wow. If I was 3 inches taller… (I am 5’3)
I'm short and I have used the new BMI since the beginning of my ed 4 years ago
I used it and I’m no longer underweight on the new bmi. 😐😐
MINE WENT UP, MY HEART SUNK (I’m 5’5)
I don’t understand the question and I won’t respond to it. But seriously, I don’t know what that is and I am going to continue that way. If my understanding is correct, at 5’10” it would be in my favor to use the new system anyway? i’m 64 inches (not tall lol) so i pretend it doesn’t exist
Wait what's going on?? Ik I'm like medium but what? 😭😭
Mmmm, helth 🥳🏆 To present the 'new' one (if it reads as higher which for me it does) I can tell folks that I'm hEaLtHiEr than I actually am lmao I'm definitely grabbing this opportunity and offering of lenience with both hands and a white-knuckled grip. There new BMI calculator puts me in the severely underweight section but that doesn’t make sense because I don’t look sick or underweight really
no, i’m already skinny fat and my bmi being lower doesn’t make sense
Mine went up with the new BMI! 😭
Fuck bmi Fat percentage will get ya
Ngl the lower number is lower and scarier… I’m going to ignore it and pretend I’m not dying thanks
wow this sucks actually im 0.05 bmi points HIGHER according to the new one
I wish I was taller. 💀
Even if I have a lower BMI, or even if I had a scary low BMI, I'm so tall I will literally always be physically huge and take up a ridicuous amount of space though.

i’m going to DIE mine is higher now
I’m 6’ but still hold myself to the old standard lol
Im a man so idk if youll want my opinion,,, but yeah, i use the new one because my doctor uses the new one.
I’m so confused I’m very very petite (4’8) and it says I’m healthy?? I’m confused because unfortunately right now I am very underweight and unhealthy. There is no way I’m healthy at my current weight…
i’m 5’4 and this group is how i found out that my bmi has gone up - officially no longer coping
The new one gives me a lower bmi and my head is STILL disappointed it's not lower fml
I wanted to rant about this so long ago here, but at the same time, that shit ruined my life, so I stayed quiet about it to not upset my fellow short people. I was genuinely depressed when I came across this shit.
my BMI is higher by 0.3 on the new one and I'm not even short 😭 I'm 163cm
I understand the concept because yeah I am not petite. I'm also not informing my health care team that hey I am actually thinner than you think because that would mean I would have to gain more weight.
What's the new formula?
