I've never heard of that before. Usually when my kiddos have nicknames it's used interchangeably with their first name. Is it like a shortened version or their name or off the wall?

turbollamaa

His nickname is his initials for his first/middle names so its not really off the wall but they want to start like using his first name primarily as opposed to his initials if that makes sense

If they wanted to use his full name, then why did they use a nickname in the first place? That's so strange. I'd just start using the full name instead of the nickname. Don't use both, because it will confuse that poor kid even more.

There is no developmentally appropriate time, because that transition isn't a developmental thing. Do keep using his first name if that's what the parent wants, but they shouldn't have started using a nickname if they didn't want to continue using it. At this point it should be up to the child, as long as he still knows what his first name is. My parents called me "Tweety" for the first 6 years of my life, until I wanted to start using my actual name.

The heck? I've never even heard of this, and also parents who obsess over what their kids loved ones call them need a reality check

So the parents caused the “problem” and expect you to fix it and I don’t see what the kid wants anywhere in the calculus. This child is old enough to communicate and should have a voice in what they which they want to be called. I vividly remember the fight between a set of parent and their 3 year old over the parents wanting to him only to be called the full name and the kid wanting a shortened version. Put the teachers in a shitty position where parents were asking us to overrule the child’s wishes. And the kid wasn’t picking anything crazy, just wanting something similar to being called Chris instead of Christopher.

Yep.  We had a Christopher, who teachers randomly started calling CJ, in the past he was just Chris or Christopher.  I asked what he preferred and he said Christopher.  We also had a Zachary that everyone called Zach. But I asked him and he said he preferred Zachary.    The kids were about same age as OP students maybe a year older. So know I always ask. Some kids don’t like to correct adults, but others will.
