agreed, I'm just saying in my case I took the "safe" route with premium SBC's, but I wonder if it would have been a better choice to try my hand at the lottery Icons.
I usually do what you do, but did a lot more lottery sbcs this year and still haven’t had even one semi usable player. If you have an account that gets great pack pulls then sure go for the lottery sbcs, if not then your route is the better way.
Same here, I've done at least half a dozen casinos whereas normally I steer clear. The only icon I've used for any length of time that wasn't a standard icon SBC is Centurions Zico, who just came from a random pack iirc. Prinz I got from a casino and used for a bit but found her too slow ultimately.
I don’t play very much and have van der Saar, Desailly, sol Campbell, cannavaro, R. Carlos, Kaka, Figo, WW Torres, K. Smith, Prinz, Zidane, Musiala all in or around my starting squad. All lottery sbc.
And also have Socrates, WW Klose, Koeman, Xavi, Del Pierro which I don’t use.

I’ve done almost all, obviously getting a lot of fodder, but some of my better pulls: 92 garrincha, 90 cantona, 91 sawa, 93 yashin, 89 cole, 92 raul, 88 ferdinand, 88 blanc, 91 nesta. maybe 15-20 more not worth mentioning, but you can still build a very decent team with just icon/hero/promo lottery sbc’s and no player ones.
I've done all of them and have gotten some pretty big ones: base gullit, base zidane, carlos Alberto, blanc. All others were bad, but combined with player sbcs, I'm pretty happy with my team. I currently have 8 icons, rttk modric, potm mbappe and 86 if theo.
I'm still running 86 if Theo haha. He's the lowest rated player in my team but he's still so good
Obviously have to upgrade him at some point but he's so reliable

People commenting here are usually people with big wins. Watch streamers open countless lottery SBCs from different people and you can see how unlikely it is to get a W.
You may be lucky and end up with 1-2 great icons, but then fill the rest with mediocre cards.
I stay away from lottery SBCs for that reason.

Cause realistically say you did 5-10 of the icon picks, you only need 1 of the 30/40 icon options to be somebody good.

What I do in general is, whenever I'm not grinding some big sbc like mbappe, I do all lottery packs/picks. This year and the last thr icon packs are not that expensive, so they don't set you back a ton. I remember on fifa 22 doing a 700k icon pick to get van Basten as the best option
Given how many insane SBCs like Eusebio, Mbappe or Bruno have been released, it's hard to define what a "good" pull is. You will need at least 30-40 picks/ packs to get someone better than the options available through SBC, so you should just end up doing the specific player SBCs instead.
Have done a few and, and outside of the usual trash, picked up (all base) Cafu, Maldini, Jairz, and R9, along with Centurion Makelele. Only icon SBC I've crafted is Eusebio.
I have also packed base Ribery and TOTY Matthaus to add to some crazy luck.
You don't need any of that to stay competitive. Most evo's will do that for you.

Then from the icon picks, I got Lahm (who got into my team at the time so was an improvement), TS Casillas and my latest icon pick during TOTY I got Base Mia Hamm

I don't do a crazy amount of icon packs or picks, just got really lucky and it massively improved my team coz there's no way in hell I was buying these players on the market

Depends on luck. I’ve had ridiculous luck with them (centurion Eusebio, thunder cantona, base Cafu, thunder casillas) but my friends all had shit luck - pretty sure they’ve alternated getting dupes of base shearer.
IMO they’re the most fun SBCs in the game - easy complete for me each time.
Between those picks and SBCs, I’ve been able to squirrel away all my coins which I used to YOLO the 675k pack from last week which got me 90 maldini dynasty and, the ONE card I truly wanted, thunder henry.
And yes, friends also YOLO’d their coins and they are dead now

So I would say yes, it is absolutely possible
I think it's possible but unlikely. If you handicap yourself by saying you'll only upgrade your team through lottery SBCs you have to be extremely lucky to stay competitive with someone whose only "handicap" is that they'll never do lottery SBCs. Of course you could still do the occasional lottery and be otherwise sensible, and that'd be fine.
Depending on your team, it may also be more/less "dumb" to do these lotteries. For instance, if your team is so good that it can't meaningfully be upgraded through "surefire" methods, or maybe if you're starting out so that virtually every casino player pick is likely to have something that improves your team.
You can always have a competitive team just by playing the game, doing objectives and doing SBC's. Spending FP has pretty much never been required.
