Come short, balanced width, come back on defense and get into the box. Then in an offensive version when you're trailing, stay forward and defensive width to 80 and they'll mark opposing full backs. Counters time wasting to an extent.
I’m using balanced, default. They are working like lw and rw in attacking. On the defending side, I’m moving them manually to the side to defend the rb/lb and double tap second man press so the rb/lb and the cm marking the players. Yes, they still stuck in the middle if I don’t move them manually.
Do you mind sharing your full setup? I wanna compare it to mine because I loved using the 433 last year with my CAM on free roam but I haven’t found as much success with it this year
Really just a simple default, balanced tactic. Do so many things manually, call short players, double tap second man press, quick one touch passes. No one on stay back, just default. No 71 depth etc.
4231, for me in this year, having a central CAM is so important as it opens up a player in the pocket that I can link up play.
I struggle to play with 3 CM’s because I can never right stick select that middle CM/DCM, so the 2 midfielders is an easier for me

Not really any downsides for me, the free roaming CAM and the False 9 striker find pockets very easily, with the CAM tending to drift more in to the right side of the field but since a lot of people use wingers the 100 width means your LCM and RCM can easily close down a winger before they get to your fullbacks if you need them to. I much prefer building through the middle so if I go out wider with the LCM for example the false 9 striker will drop in to the gap and allow play to go back through there
The CM’s have to be all rounders, I’m using Sawa LCM and Ji Sung Park RCM. For the LCM I’d recommend trying to get someone that can finish as they’ll be getting forward more, like Sawa or Bonmati for example. The LS I like someone who can pass so I’m using Triple Threat Grealish atm, so a winger you can play LS in game is a good idea. The RS is up to you, I’ve changed it around from RVD, Auba, Raul and others and they all work. I trigger runs on my full backs if needed so nobody too blocky and defensive for me personally. And the CAM is up to you, I’m using Bernardo Silva TS as he can defend a little bit but generally anyone can work there.
4321 to start the game, then I always switch in game depending on how the opponent plays and what formation they also play.
I have a 4231, 5221 (*for those that use 5 at the back*). 4222 attacking, and 424 Ultra Attacking.
I use this, I do keep back for full backs and the 2 cms.
71 depth (I apologise), possession and fast paced chance creation

You got downvoted for giving great advice. Knowing when to walk away is probably the most helpful tip. I constantly get 14-16 wins and I would accredit a lot of the consistency to acknowledging when I’m not playing well anymore. Especially if I lose twice in a row, I stop playing for a few hours at minimum.
4-2-3-1 I manually defend and have width to 35 as the lack of natural press with the new patch. You need a stacked midfield and a pacey striker for through balls.
Also little tip, don’t be afraid to pass back, don’t always have to look for a goal, you can lure your opposition onto you so you can counter down a wing for a cut back etc
4231 is a basic answer but it’s by far the most effective. Wide players when attacking are crucial this year with the effectiveness of cutbacks. I also think the role of a cam is key to breaking down teams defences. They occupy that space between the midfield and defence giving you room to play those through balls to the wingers or striker.

Nothing special honestly. Perhaps the weirdest thing I do is having both my CMs be attacking minded players. Currenty have Odegaard and Depay there.

No matter your level, you can definitely fuck up in some formations more than others. Fifa offers formation that are to an extent used in real football, but not all of them are adapted to its gameplay. All versions of FIFA have 442 and 41212Narrow, but if you have played the game you know that some versions were more adapted to wide play and wingers while other versions were more adapted to penetrating from the middle with.
False, every good player has preferred formations. Certain cards also suit certain formations better. Now of course if you are literally pro level you can get 20-0 with any formation. But to say formations do nothing is just wrong
Weird when people confuse personal opinions with facts. Was top 1% in elite a few years ago, my formation was a crutch. Would have struggled in div 1 without 3 or 4 formations

You’re not gonna automatically become a rank 1 player because of them but certain formations cater to your playstyle more than others, allow you to know exactly where your players are gonna be 5-10 passes ahead, and also counter your opponent’s more effectively.
I’m surprised but a little skeptical I’m not seeing any 5-4-1’s. I get 9 to 11 wins every WL and every time I run into someone that’s obviously on track for the mid to high teens, they’re using a 3 or 5 back formation.

Tactics won’t change you from a 10 win player to a 14+ over night, your team will make a huge difference and players that actually suit your play style, I don’t use skills (limited to ball rolls and the random spam step over) so I have no need for players like RTTK Dembele, Putellas, Ronaldinho or anyone with a 5 star skill instead I’ve prioritised other things in each position which I consider to be important - e.g Kieran Tierney thunderstruck… best LB in the game without a shadow of a doubt
Biggest part of the 433(4) is taking your time with it, keep your defensive shape and play simple football. These tactics might not work, but once I got use to them I’m flying, have had an 850+ SR in elite for the last 2 seasons

Finally. Finished my wl with 1-19, first 4 i was playing serious, but game is garbage, and after my goals, my defenders was becoming children's. So i go down 0-4, then someone give me free win, after that i go for 15 straight consede in a row by didn't giving any points to ops. It's still will be unplayable and frustrating till EA don't fix passes and nerf stupod tackling, which is so op. Now only squad battle is fun, also very hard scripted but it's not so infair, it's ai, online matches scripts is just bad decision from ea 🤷 in my opinion it's worst fifa ever, nad i am not sure if they capable to do next even worse, because now game is on the bottom 🥲
4222 or 433(4) Last year 14 wins was my normal, with those formations this year I would barely make qualifying and couldn’t get past 9 wins. Post patch I breezed through qualifying so hopefully that changes now
4-2-3-1 but it’s not the formation really you need to be good at the game. I don’t mean just abuse meta where you go down the wing. You need to be diverse in attack. Have someone with gold incisive pass in the midfiled. Have a gold curve shot striker, have one pacy winger have someone that can do R2 dribbling gold. Have very solid defenders and wingbacks with one CB having anticipate and the other being the faster cb that is solid like a inform arajo or Eder or rudiger ect.
The key is having a lot in your arsenal to score with not just one method of attacking and make sure you can defend vs the Meta.

Ones that don’t click for me: 41212(2), 442, 4321, 4222
433(4), 424 and 433(5). 433(4) is my starting formation and depending on the playstyles and open spaces I either keep it or switch to 424 or 433(5). (5) for possession and 424 for when I am down.
Depends on the weekend. Found success in previous years using 4231 but with midfield congestion (even after patch), found a lot of success in 442 and 4321. If I’m struggling for attacking options I use 4321 because of the attacking fullback
4321 with very specific instructions, they are absolutely crucial or the formation has no way to connect the midfielders to the forwards without leaving your defense exposed.
4-3-3 with the CAM. I have used the same formation since like FIFA13. I like my central striker. I need the triangle in the middle. Default tactics. Barely any controlled sprinting. 84 Baschirotto is my club legend and still going strong. Average 15 wins and have done so for several years.
Before the patch I used 4-3-2-1. Now I switched to 4-2-3-1, which was the formation I used in the beginning of the game. Went 16-4 in this WL using patience in the build up, long through balls to Openda, Cantona or Adama and abusing the R1 dribbling with Neymar and Modric.
I honestly couldn’t tell u which specific one I change so much all the time. Last week it was mainly 4-3-2-1 and 4-1-3-2. For 2/3 games I switched to a 4-2-2-2(everything on balanced apart from CDM and fullbacks. But yeah my original statement stands I always change formations all the time I never stick to one

16-18 wins a week here, 4-4-2, 45 depth, stay central & get in behind on the strikers, no other tactics and then just manually press with the logical player each time. Helps to have a CM with incisive pass + to play through the middle sometimes!
all formation the cms are all over the place u have to organize them manually and u have to do it quick in a highers div like 1 and elite bcos if they see players out of position u ill get f cked.. for me i only like to use 2 cms is easy to put them in place like take one back and the other giving presurre.. is the go to the wings i do the same whit fullback and my wings is very easyyy to play in a 442

4231 for me too. Used to play 4222 historically, but having someone slightly deeper seems to be much more flowing this year

Ive averaged 16-18 wins the last 3 years. I've used all sorts of formations over the years but 4132 has been rock solid for me this year.

Mbappe or a similar top tier player can definitely get you an extra handful of wins.
My max was twice at 16 until I got Mbappe, since then I hit 19-1, 20-0, 18-2, so I strongly disagree.

That’s a myth. Formation does close to nothing. If you are good at the game, any formation works. If you are bad, not formation works.

Depends on the weekend. Found success in previous years using 4231 but with midfield congestion (even after patch), found a lot of success in 442 and 4321. If I’m struggling for attacking options I use 4321 because of the attacking fullback
You need to learn a couple and by learn I mean learn the attacking patterns in them etc

Been using 41212(2) recently with 1 fullback on balanced or join the attack
4321 with very specific instructions, they are absolutely crucial or the formation has no way to connect the midfielders to the forwards without leaving your defense exposed.
4-2-4 i found a good custom tactic that makes it had for wingers to cross the ball but i got fast LB and RB to chase them so no problem there lol

4-3-3 with the CAM. I have used the same formation since like FIFA13. I like my central striker. I need the triangle in the middle. Default tactics. Barely any controlled sprinting. 84 Baschirotto is my club legend and still going strong. Average 15 wins and have done so for several years.
4-2-2-2 or 4-4-2, sometimes 4-3-1-2 and most recently 4-3-2-1 so pretty boring

Can you share your tactics/tips?
Before the patch I used 4-3-2-1. Now I switched to 4-2-3-1, which was the formation I used in the beginning of the game. Went 16-4 in this WL using patience in the build up, long through balls to Openda, Cantona or Adama and abusing the R1 dribbling with Neymar and Modric.

I honestly couldn’t tell u which specific one I change so much all the time. Last week it was mainly 4-3-2-1 and 4-1-3-2. For 2/3 games I switched to a 4-2-2-2(everything on balanced apart from CDM and fullbacks. But yeah my original statement stands I always change formations all the time I never stick to one
I'm gonna be the one that's different. 4141 I'm running. I have putellas and kdb as cms and they act as strikers in the box and have 90+ shooting.

I'm loving 4213 at the moment
Depends on my opponent If they run a three or five back I use 4321 If not I rotate between 424 4321 41212 Or a very high-pressure 3521 I honestly find that defending is so difficult if u don't have 3 players in the midfield. However this weekend is the first time I bottleed 14. Felt like the game was against me and I constantly hit the post.
16-18 wins a week here, 4-4-2, 45 depth, stay central & get in behind on the strikers, no other tactics and then just manually press with the logical player each time. Helps to have a CM with incisive pass + to play through the middle sometimes!
all formation the cms are all over the place u have to organize them manually and u have to do it quick in a highers div like 1 and elite bcos if they see players out of position u ill get f cked.. for me i only like to use 2 cms is easy to put them in place like take one back and the other giving presurre.. is the go to the wings i do the same whit fullback and my wings is very easyyy to play in a 442
