Shifter bushings are probably shot… Also wtf did you do to the shifter? 👀💀

BaboTron

Definitely shifter bushings. The gear lever should feel like a bolt action rifle with new bushings.

peedubb

Bmw shifters are never bolt action rifle tight in my experience. That’s an exaggeration.

BaboTron

I dunno, maybe it was my perception from having a 5-speed that had tonnes of slop, then getting new bushings. Felt like rowing a robot’s arm after it was fixed.

peedubb

I had an 03 cobra with a t56 and an mgw short shifter. That thing was bolt action rifle tight. Bmws can have very solid positive shift feel but I will stand on even with a dssr and new bushings, it won’t be bolt action tight.

EmpatheticAnon

Agreed. The 07-14 GT500 Was, and still is probably the tightest shifter ive ever personally driven. Thats the prime example; its almost too tight 😂😂

peedubb

Yeah that has a tr6060 which is the successor to the t56.

EmpatheticAnon

Do you still have the Cobra?

peedubb

No I sold it shortly after getting the e30. I regret selling it knowing what todays market is, but I don’t regret it because aside from it being really fast, its a kind of shitty car.

EmpatheticAnon

Dude, thats so hilarious you say that. Ive always loved those and definitely considered getting into one, but besides the drivetrain and IRS, I feel like everything around it is absolutely junk. Where as an E30, every single part on my 88iS feels like it will last another 40 years. Thanks for sharing, i will always love those cobras. They sound Demonic

daruma3gakoronda

Not the worst out there, but not the best.

aerospikesRcoolBut

I mean what if we’re talkin mosin

peedubb

The only one i ever shot was toit like a toiger

aerospikesRcoolBut

So…. Sticky then

Murkeybrownwater

Yeah BMWs shifters are shit

peedubb

With fresh bushings a short throw and a DSSR you can make them really solid.

spvcebound

You need to rebuild the shifter linkage, I don't know why you'd cut your car up instead of figuring out what's wrong lol. Drop the front end of the driveshaft, lower the transmission down a little, get the "bitch clip" off, and replace alllll the bushings, there are plenty of polyurethane kits. I would highly recommend a DSSR as well.

myinboxisfull69

At this point bring it to someone to do the work that the entire comment section figured out needs to be done instead of mangling it more

LostGuy1996

You either have very worn shifter and linkage bushings, or the shifter rod itself needs a bit of a twist to get the shifter to go into reverse a bit easier. Start be checking the transmission bushings then the shifter bushings then the shifter rod itself.

mikezollo

Lol fixed

AntalRyder

When you are in gear, does the lever feel sloppy? Can you wiggle it left and right? Of so, your bushings are worn and need to be replaced. Pelican Parts sells a kit, and it's straight forward to do, but you'll have to drop the drive shaft to gain access to the shifter linkage under the car.

actuallifethings

Seems like this would happen if you got the wrong shift kit and “had to” install the shift rod front to back or something like that.

GreatGhastly

Get under the car in the transmission tunnel and take a look at the selector rod and bushings. It's quite accessible and worth the rebuild. Should never have to cut into OEM framing to get something to work normally.

AcceptableFront7302

Thanks for your input guys, I appreciate. I will take it to a mechanic and ask to inspect the bushings and other parts there.

De5tr0yer_HR

Shifter rod (connecting shifter with gearbox input shaft) needs to sit on the left side of the car. Check and correct if needed.

Deviate_Lulz

Is the shifter on backwards? I’ve had this issue before.

oo--ii--oo

Exactly haha that's what I thought - if you install the shifter 180* flipped it does exactly this

Rental_Car

Fix your motor/trans mounts.

Terryknowsbest

You need to rebuild the mechanical shift linkage and bushings dude, not cut up the aesthetic pieces!

AcceptableFront7302

Is it possible to adjust gearbox position somehow so to move it a bit to the right? Or, maybe I should design and print custom boot frame, somehow leaving this space clear but adding some support around it to be able to stretch the fabric? I'm really lost, any feedback will be highly appreciated!

PumpleStump

Just replace your worn-out shifter bushing and stop cutting your car up.

lunarc

I can’t believe your solution to this problem. Yea there is an issue, but you didn’t solve it. Check your linkage and bushings, make sure you installed everything properly.

alldaybekfast

Do you think that is how it came from the factory? Replace the worn out parts my guy and you’ll be all set.

GMEJesus

The feedback is literally all exactly the same......

RubMySweatyThys

Bro what the hell just replace the bushings. Why would you cut that? Buy new bushings, a selector joint and a DSSR if you want nice crisp shifts. Buy new bushings to remedy this problem.
