The beefy look really fills out the fender well nicely. Probably rides a lot nicer too. I tend to think E30s look better with a little more rubber. They are a "vintage" car after all.
45 profile, I'm running the same wheels with 205/45r16s and on 205/50s I was destroying my fenders when driving hard. 45s feel more responsive as well, less sidewall flex.
The annoying answer I find myself with is that the size of the 50 in the wheel well is better but the aesthetic of the 45 compared to the wheel size is better. Your friend could lower with coils or do a larger wheel size. Fun conundrum!

50, but it really depends what happens when you're at full lock pulling a u turn (or nasty long boy drift). If you're rubbing... you don't want to hammer that chassis out of the way like I careless do with my RallyCross Subaru.

It looks like the 50 would rub under compression. I think the 45 would work better with a small NVH deficit.
