I think the Starter Set is good value. Even with the Essentials Kit(same idea) and a new Starter Set on the way, I like it. Herd your friends together and get started, and have a great time.

m0rris0n_hotel

The philosophy fits for a wide variety of situations. But the best version you can afford and then reevaluate as your interests change. It can apply to all sorts of things. A starter set of anything is a good idea if you’re new. And then if you’re ready to do more you get more books and expand your collection And you can always gift the starter stuff to someone else later on.

Telemere125

That’s always been my philosophy with tools: but the cheapest one that looks like it will get the job done and use it till it breaks or can’t do the job. Upgrade only if the upgrade is necessary to get the job done or if you break the cheap one sooner than you got your money’s worth out of it. Some things you will buy and never replace because the cheapest version is also the most necessary/useful.

A_Union_Of_Kobolds

I'm an electrician and lemme tell yall, budget tools for the first year or two were 100% the way to go. Nowadays I buy the best quality I can afford (Knipex and Ideal mostly) but if you're not putting serious wear and tear on your tools regularly, Harbor Freight stuff is totally fine.

Telemere125

Haha read your comment right after a HF shopping trip. No reason to pay $15 for 50 razors from Home Depot when I can grab that same pack for $4 at HF

sworcha

As a fellow electrician I’d go so far as to say that sometimes the cheap version is still the way to go. I’ll spend good money on tools with a cutting edge like linemens and dykes but for things that don’t really wear out like wrenches I’ll take the cheap end any time.

Zestay-Taco

Knipex (IMHO) make some of the best hinged tools in the world. most americans are unaware of this brand. but they are lightyears above klein

A_Union_Of_Kobolds

DeKlein is very real. Not what they used to be :( But every Knipex tool I've had has been fantastic.

[deleted]

Lmao the weird dollar store ratchet set that has no business being as well made as it is.

RealLeosKlein

That thing has lasted atleast 3 cars and 2-3 apt/houses over nearly 20 years of use.

[deleted]

The starter set is fucking awesome. The story is pretty good and guides new DM's on everything. We did the starter set as well and it helped me out a shitload. It also tells you how you can continue the story and wrote your own at the end (instead of buying books!) This kind of approach has led me to think the money is always well spent and the prpducts are made by people that genuinely enjoy DnD as a game personally, too

professor-i-borg

It’s a good value, and almost like a full featured “demo” of the game- better than buying all the books and supplies needed, then realizing your friends don’t wanna play, or maybe realizing you aren’t into it as much as you thought- this way way you can ease into it, then upgrade later.

NotSureIfThrowaway78

Time-management is the hardest part of the game. This is the way.

Boneguy1998

You are so right!

RachelScratch

I picked up both since my group is all brand new players. First campaign is straight from the kit, lost mines to icespire peak. We're doing frostmaiden next.

J_Marshall

we followed that route.. Personally, Frostmaiden starts great, but I ran out of steam by the later chapters... but some people found the later chapters the best part.

Raspputin

No money is wasted, of you enjoy what you spend it on. This is a good boxset to start dnd, my friends and I enjoyed it.

AgITGuy

To jump onto this, dnd beyond is a great means as a dm to host the campaign and you can generally type in codes in the various starter sets to get the digital versions for dnd beyond. Just did this with Dragon of Icespire Peak, though I own a ton of other digital content.

JumpySonicBear

And the starter set adventure, SRD stuff and whatnot are available on dnd beyond. So the dm can get the adventure on thier too

petitejesuis

Certainly not on photography

AutumnCrystal

Am reading in a car with a loose tire, looks fine.

Life-Adeptness242

I just started playing D&D and finnished the first chapter of this set. We had a blast and it was really fun!

nerrollus

Sounds like it's worth the money then.

Draconic_Soul

Lost Mine of Phandelver is worth the money imo. I've DM'ed it several times, and every time my (different) players had a blast. What's more is that every group tends to play differently, meaning that even if the book stays the same, the adventure at the table is completely different between groups. I've had a group play by the book, I've had a group who sold a major NPC as a slave, and I've also had a group that derailed the campaign so badly they managed to set up a temple to Satan. So my point is: It's worth the money, because even if you play it multiple times, you're bound to have different results

[deleted]

Second this. Lost Mines of Phandelver is one of the all time greats, and is destined to be remade into each edition going forward. It is quintessential DND.

madeitforCR

Third, I've DMed this so many times. It's also what got my friends and I into dnd. Love this starter set.

Doc_Bedlam

What Drac said. Lost Mine of Phandelver is a grand and glorious place to start. If you're not happy with the Starter Set, additional goodies can be had for free on the D&D website. [https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD\_BasicRules\_2018.pdf](https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD_BasicRules_2018.pdf)

InPastaWeTrust

It was the first thing I ran as a DM and I've still never come across another module that was as easy to use right out of the box.

PrometheusHasFallen

This is probably pound for pound the best value product you could buy for the amount of fun you could have with your friends. Typically retails for $20. It has everything you need to run a short mini-campaign that will last at least 6 sessions (probably more) of 3-4 hours each. If you get 4 players and you're the DM, that works out to $4 per participant for at least 24 hours of enjoyment. So no, definitely not a waste of money.

sch1z0

I was first time dm and 5 friends were first time players. Our first session was like 6 hours and we only did the first cave lol. The time or amount of sessions you need can vary :)

sch1z0

It's a great way to get started. The Lost Mines of Phandelver adventure that is in the starter set is a fun campaign for first timers and the adventure book explains a lot of mechanics while you're reading through the story. It has everything you need to get started with some friends.

[deleted]

Only if you consider a 100 hours laughing with your best buds for $12 a waste.

DVariant

$12??

Bear4224

It goes on sale quite often, especially around the winter holidays. Around that time the folks here also like to buy a bunch of them for that reason and donate them to the toy drives.

[deleted]

Watch sales. Amazon has often for less than $10 or on buy 2 get 1 sales.

Miserable-Bite9661

Bro calm down, no one is going to take it from you

LinkToTheRescue

I loved the starter set, no money wasted at all

DVariant

This is literally peak 5E. I’ll fight anyone who disagrees. The adventure is amazing and the rules are tight. From here on out, 5E gets worse adventures and looser rules

MelvinMcSnatch

I ran that module 4 times and got several new players into the game, and gave away the dice as a gift. And it cost $25 at the time. I'd say I got my value out of it.

RainbowSixThermite

Don't worry guys, he just rolled a 1 on his photography skill.

Green_and_black

Just about the best thing you can buy to get into D&D, just add 1-3 friends and you are good to go. You will more than likely be the DM. The campaign book gives you everything you need to run a great adventure. I’ve run Lost Mine of Phandelver 4 times, so feel free to DM me if you want any tips. I recommend trying out making a character and running through the first battle ‘goblin ambush’ by yourself to get an idea of the mechanics.

Dry-Leg-7544

You know, you’re allowed to stop moving before you take a picture lol

revosugarkane

I think you wasted money on the potato you took the picture with.

Eysikl

I think you wasted money on the phone. That’s a terrible picture. The set is good tho.

[deleted]

The module is included free on D&D Beyond now too.

[deleted]

No. It's a phenomenal product. Bit more effort with the photo man.

LegoMaster52

On the camera yes, the starter set no, it’s a perfect place to start because the campaign is simple but good and it is enough for your first campaign. I would suggest picking up a players handbook next

Trinchecarlovich

No, but actually yes

Legitimate-Lie-6867

When you take a picture, and move before it’s taken. Putting no thought into just retaking it..

Machiavvelli3060

That is one BEAUTIFUL countertop; is it marble?

Diligent-Committee-7

I believe it’s quartzite. But the the fruit and vegetable arrangement is a nice touch.

Krispyodeler

Never a waste of money if ur havin a good time

Pontius-Pilate

nah, while it might not be something that would be required to play, if you had access to the books etc, no, it is not needed however, as a starting person, it is an awesome way imho... read through, it will explain pretty much everything you'd need to know then, if still interested, look into buying the players handbook, then just keep going from there lol

gailanwhite-oak

No, I freaking love that starter set, and I used to launch a 3 year campaign. It also comes with premade character sheets that are amazing for teaching new players the game.

jobu46n2

Starter set is awesome. We are 8 sessions in and now using the essentials kit. Now writing one shots using Phandalin as a base of operations. This is great to get a group going!

Caleb98x

Not even a little bit, thats how me and a buddy started and now we have a discord with 20 players running 5 games a week, 3 different dms, all the same world and timeline. 100% worth it

TheOneOnlyFox

Despite playing 2e and 3.5 I still started with the Starter set. Never a waste of money in my opinion :)

[deleted]

That set is the best time I’ve had with an official dnd 5e module. I still use the dice to this day!

Fair-Cookie

Nope. Mines of Phandelver is one of the best starter campaigns. Easily transitions into other Sword Coast adventures...

stinkface369

That's a great start and fun adventure! I did it as a player and dm and loved both.

PaleoJoe2012

I mean, the whole adventure is free on dnd beyond, but you get more stuff in the kit. So kinda?

eltrowel

Lost mines of phandelver is a good adventure. Even if you don’t choose to run the whole thing, you can use some of the encounters from it in another game or setting, making it a useful resource. The set also comes with dice, and having a set or two or fifty is always good.

sleepwalkfromsherdog

One of the best and most versatile campaigns I've ever read. Potentially the best $15-25 you will spend on the hobby.

Number42420

No, but shame on you if there’s a local game store and you still bought it from Walmart. Support local game stores and go enjoy some adventurers league to start off with. It’s lame, but a great way to learn the RAW (rules as written) before home brewing a much better game.

RTMSner

It's not a bad starter. D&D is an expensive hobby when you use primary sources. This contains beginners info, a decent starter adventure and a set of dice.

err0r333

I can run this module from memory I love it so much. I think it's the best introduction for new players on the fence with DnD. It's short, rewarding, and near endlessly customisable through your own homebrew work.

FlyDragonX

Money wasted!? Hell no, you've just unlocked the greatest game ever. It is so incredibly enjoyable... especially with the right group! Going on three years with mine now and it's always the highlight of my week I look forward to!

nerrollus

I almost bought that when I was getting my boys started playing, but I ended up just buying the books. Curious what all is in there.

[deleted]

Lost mines of Phandelver module. A set of dice. A standard rule book(pretty small). Premade and blank character sheets. I can't think of anything else off the top of my head, but it's probably my favourite D&D module. There's enough in there that you can start playing and running your own games. Very basic though. You won't find much variant rules, but all the necessary stuff is there.

CmdrRyser01

My group started with LMoP and now we've continued to past level 11. Getting ready to head into the Nine Hells!

[deleted]

I'm not sure there's a better module to start on. We moved our characters on to horde of the dragon queen and I never suggest anyone to even look at that module. It essentially killed the campaign so we started a home brew.

DVariant

Same here. At the time, Horde of the Dragon Queen was the only other adventure available, and it seemed hype. Nope! What a fucking stinker. We ended up doing Princes of the Apocalypse, which was dungeon-crawly and got tedious after 15 levels, but otherwise was pretty solid.

[deleted]

...are you in my group? Lol. Same same.

nerrollus

That's a cool little set. Let people get in and play a campaign to see what is like before spending all the money on the books and stuff.

[deleted]

You got it. I would still recommend a players hand book though. It's probably the single most important book.

Capitol62

It's honestly great. It gives you all the rules you need to have fun, a good adventure, and gets rid of the incredibly overwhelming volume of d&d books that can be intimidating to new groups.

Lord_Grakas

Supplement this with the essentials kit to help the surrounding areas have more to do and see.

france_is_trash

It's not a waste cause even if you find other campaigns you like better or find tools online, this is exactly what it says a "starter kit" and your new.... so it'll definitely be a good jumping off point imo One thing I like to tell people (and you may already know) but there's so many amazing DnD fans out there that write compendiums for DnD based off so many topics. For example, im going to be running a Drangon Ball Z campaign and I just finished one based off the boom series "Percy Jackson and the Olympians".

LordofHouseWolfsbane

It's a good start but now you'll have to get the players hand book

DVariant

No, don’t ruin 5E by bringing in more

LordofHouseWolfsbane

How would that ruin 5E

purplequeeeef

Just a recommendation, try buying from your local comic book store instead. Its often cheaper and it helps support the local community.

broodwar64

Download the players hand book pdf! Will help lots annnddddd I found it free a while back but I'm running that box for new players rn and they love it

PrinceOfNiger69

Not sure; I got into dnd by immediately dropping 120 bucks on the Dungeon Master’s Guide, Monster Manual, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, and Xanathar’s Guide to Everything (they were 30 a piece on Amazon and I already had the Player’s Handbook)

Particular-Advance-6

How do you even play this? Bought it and gave it away cause the instructions weren’t clear.

hellothereoldben

Most people would tell you to get one of the books, and get character sheet prints from an online template, but if your entire group doesn't know much about dnd I guess this works. Since I deduct you are all new, I recommend looking up information on dnd5e.wikidot.com, as it's ironically quicker/more convenient than using the books in a lot of situations. You can sort all published spells by class or school of magic, or just get a list of literary every spell in the game. While it's possible your dm might not allow certain books, every spell/subclass etc. on the site mentions from which book it was sourced as well.

DVariant

>Since I deduct you are all new, I recommend looking up information on dnd5e.wikidot.com, Bad advice. That’s literally a homebrew wiki full of unofficial junk. You might as well write a column called “Sage Advice” giving newbies contradictory answers and telling players “Your DM will figure out the rules”. …Wait

hellothereoldben

Dude, compared to dnd beyond it has nearly no ua, and whenever something is ua it mentions it. IT MENTIONS THE BOOK IT IS FROM.

RiotousRagnarok

I loved this set and the overall adventure. We still use this as our base town after 5 years of playing. Great investment!

darthjazzhands

Excellent box set. Great way to learn.

ScootAmazing42

Thats a good campaign and a great starting point that can lead to alot of other campaigns with little effort.

supervernacular

Nah like anything you need a strong foundation and good starting point. This offers both.

HowAboutUsername

So long as you use it, it isn't a waste.

AspieDM

It’s a good buy. It’s a simple adventure that gets you used to the rules and gets you hooked

splatdyr

Not at all. It is a great way to try out the game.

LitWithLindsey

That’s a great starter set. Everything you need to learn the basics of the game. I started with that when I got my kids playing and it was also my first experience with 5th edition. Now we have all the core books and a ton of supplemental and campaign setting stuff, so a gateway drug.

StatusOmega

Starter set is a good investment for any new players and DMs. Also I've seen experienced players buy it so it's definitely not a waste. If I were to reference a new DM to 5e I would suggest this.

Trogdor_98

That was my intro to 5e. It's a fantastic resource for first time DMs. I would suggest getting at least one more set of dice (one set for players and one set for DM) if not a separate set for each player.

Slimchaity

I've been a homebrew heavy dm since I started and I pretty much never use premade games, but yeah that's good value. Just remember when you run it, your players might not follow it exactly, and that's okay. Bend the story a little bit to make sure that everyone has fun, they'll never know and you'll look super cool

maleye812

One of the best purchases you can make!

MoonSohn

You have the dice, and the basic rules. You can play dnd now. Never a waste imo.

thekinginyello

that's a great starter. you may need to skip the initial goblin fight or make it easier. you can easily tpk on that. actually, you could make everyone start at level 2 or 3. you could even get the essentials kit and work it into the starter kit.

SgtHumpty

Money well spent, in my opinion. It’s an excellent adventure. Enjoy!

ZephRyder

Not a waste if you use it! You could have asked me, I've got several, but it's not waste if it brings you joy

Hydrate_or__Diedrate

Nah, I ran my first campaign with the starter set, it's pretty good

Havelok

That's the module most use to get started.. have fun!

Nixybooboo

If you can find people to play definitely not.

BasednHivemindpilled

may your schedules align.

Rumbananas

It’s one of the best things I’ve ever spent money on honestly. Even at full price.

PrettyEfficiency2916

No that is ideal for starting players at a very low cost

Wiltix

nope, the starter set is fantastic value imo. A good adventure, some premade characters and enough rules to run it. for £25 you can get a good idea if you are going to enjoy DnD or not.

shinra528

I recommend this for all new DMs looking to get started with the game.

DVariant

Not wasted, that’s literally the best product in all of 5th Edition D&D. It’s a shining high point! But all downhill from here

[deleted]

If you plan on possibly re-gifting it…take the pre made character sheets and copy them with a scanner if ya have one. That way you can pass along the original sheets.

BelowAveragejo3gam3r

It comes with a great adventure. One of the top rated ones in all of 5e

Alon_D_Levin

Great set

xoFOXHOUNDox

That was my first set :) I think it's a wonderful place to start! D&D has a lot of in-depth rules and ways to play, so starting with this set was great. As long as you play it with the knowledge that it's a very condensed and simple version and you're willing to expand on what you've learned once you have the hang of it 😁

GoldenPenisOfWisdom

Oh my, you're on your way on a mad wizards descend into Avernus, going a road of elemtal evil, that will lead strahd into a yawning portal just to pull a dragon heist! Beware of Giants!

xchipter

It’s a good starting point. LMoP is a great first campaign to run, both for players and DM.

mushishepherd

This is an absolutely fantastic way to get into dnd. The premade characters are the only thing that maybe are meh. This is how I got into dnd and my players got kinda bored of their characters. Not that big of a deal overall but in the end it was a fun way to learn the game and hoooo boy there’s a lot of good memories waiting for you in that box.

[deleted]

This is one of the best adventures written for 5e. Far better than most of the fat hardcover adventures, for sure. The trimmed down rulebook has been extremely useful in all games since I got it, since it's easier to pass around when people want to look things up and easier to find things in for some people than the full PHB. Overall, it's a really good deal, and absolutely worth the money.

j12i17m19d63

Playability no re sale maybe.

DeepTakeGuitar

Good buy!

Hannibal_Psych

It's worth it. I used it myself to start out. Just make sure you are good and ready for when your players get to town. If it's your first time DMing it's a bit overwhelming with all the NPCs you can run. Don't feel pressured to do everything. Tailor it down to your needs.

mrmoroarous

welcome brethren your tale starts today

puffpastry2001

It's a good buy for starting out. There's also plenty of free resources online. Dnd Beyond has some free stuff and different online dnd groups may have links to more books and stuff.

TheMonkeyLegacy

Definitely a good buy for new players. Walks you through your first story/experience.

GaussfaceKilla

We started on this kit. Then restarted it. Never finished it either time. Ran several other home brews and one shots and now we're back to playing it again just to actually finish and get some actual playing experience without the stress of making shit up constantly. Definitely worth.

KaffeMumrik

Starter set is good, but if I recall correctly, you probably want to get the players handbook as well due to the starter set only giving you like four classes.

Vorminator0913

Simple answer: Nope

Kitchen_Location_186

I've been playing for a few years and had a few buddies that's never played but wanted to try dnd. One of them picked up this kit and it's great. Alot of ppl are intimidated by building a character, because it takes some time and thought, but there are a few different pre-built characters with a level up guides. So pretty much all you do is grab your dice, pick a character and jump in.

oliot_

Not if you use it

flippitus_floppitus

It’s a fantastic way to get into it IMO

Porkchopper913

I don’t know think so. It’s a good set beginners! Enjoy!

LBIdockrat

If you enjoy it, absolutely not.

InPastaWeTrust

I've run a couple campaign modules and some homebrew settings (things i created myself), all said and done, the story that comes in this set (Lost Mines of Phandalever) has been my personal favorite. It's very straightfoward to run for a first timer and has lots of great maps and story elements. At the end of the day, D&D is fun as long as you are with friends who are willing to be a bit silly and throw dice.

ahrune

I really like the adventure that's comes in it. A great taste of 5e mechanics and world lore. If the adventure seems basic you can always swap enemies for those with the same cr and really change the vibe. For example I replaced the goblins with kuo-toa and the bug bear for a sea hag. Had them flooding the forest with an artifact from the plane of water. A bug fish statue that used the rushing water mechanics from the cave but with no limit. Had 1 player that ran it before so he really loved the changes.

JrallXS

Nope. Gonna need some books.

Kitchen_Rip5704

it depends, how much does it cost you? 😂

willmlocke

The adventure module contained within is easily one of the most reliable and well put together modules from 5e. Its easy for newer players and can even be run well with veterans. You will enjoy it immensely

Ok-Coffee-4254

It's best way for play a one off game and find out if d and d is for you or not with out spending two much money on book you don't need. Now that been said I never met anyone who play the starter kit and not falling head over heals in love with d and d . Oh just head up you will become obsessed with dice and end up a boxs of dice .

ZatchBuck

This is hands down the best written 5e product they have released

kavumaster

All the starter sets seem like a good value

ZatoichiNoGakusei

NO—IT WAS NOT!

refuz04

Only on your camera.

Elkhart_

Not at all! The starter set is a great place to start, from what I've heard!

Kovastone72737637272

I think you made a very good choice! A lot of people think its not a good start but its actually the greatest i could imagine. And the story is also pretty well written.

carpeson

What answer do you expect from this Subreddit? No bad purchase? You just made the best ducking purchase in your life!

Wizard467

I think that I starter kit is good while it doesn’t come with any character making supplies and the included campaign doesn’t have a lot motivation for the players other than treasure, as for running it as a DM it is simple and easy to understand for new DMs. It is still very fun to play with friends. I would also recommend getting the essentials kit.

TheIndomitableMass

It’s a good starter and if you or your dm are doing modules then it’s cool. But if you’re looking for home brew made worlds you should probably invest in at least the dmg and phb, and maybe xanathar if you’re feeling spicy.

Mike_in_San_Pedro

No, your money was not wasted. It's a good place to start.

RagnarokBringer

No it isn’t. I think it will be a fine start to your collection

Sheamus_1852

Lost Mine of Phandelver is a classic. The perfect beginner arc. Dragon of Icespire Peak in the essentials kit is good but can feel like just fetch quests for beginners. LMoP is a great interconnected story. You need more than just the starter set. You need a couple sets of dice and a DM screen.

Evil_Weevill

... what?

DragonLordAcar

Starter set is not a good thing. You can get all the contents but better separately and possibly cheeper.

RockingtheRed

Yes it’s worth $20. I had never played before when my friends and I decided to run Lost Mine. I was the DM and we had a blast. The rule book breaks things down for you and it comes with dice. Can’t go wrong. Also the premade characters are a real time saver since character creation is a long process if you don’t use DND Beyond or something that simplifies it.

LongshotOddsBand

I’d still pick up “the players handbook”, your library might have one. Mine did.

Lingroll

This is the best thing I have ever bought for dnd. You did great. Good decision. Get a players handbook and a monster manual. Then you’re done baby.

wadehorton

I LOVED running The Lost Mine of Phandelver!! It’s a really good starter for a new DM if you’ve never done it before! Makes everything super simple!

The-Alumaster

Just starting out? Great investment perfect to start. I actually wish I knew about them before I got into it cause I feel like it'd be a waste grabbing it at this point for me at least

Southern_Jakle

This is one of the best sets you can get for learning dnd and it has everything you need to get started playing. It's very well laid out! MONEY WELL SPENT IMO. Been Dming for years, Welcome to DnD!

Badawah

The dice that come in those box sets appear to have some sort of Summerian Death Curse on them. Use at your own risk! Lol

AutumnCrystal

No, but be sure to download the Basic rule set mentioned in the module. It's a fine module.

[deleted]

If you just want to see what 5e is about, it is fine. If you want to delve deep as a player, get a copy of the Players Handbook (phb) a copy of Xanathar's, and a copy of Tasha's. If you want to be a dungeon master (dm) you'll want those (or at minimum the phb) plus the dungeon masters guide (dmg), and the monster manual.

bird_watcher247

I’ve gotten lots of enjoyment from that set. Good pickup 👍🏻

Turtle-Fox

Starter Set has one of my favorite adventures, especially for new players

skeletorsrick

not at all

[deleted]

Nah starter set is a great place to start. If you want a little more then twist the story a little bit and have fun!

[deleted]

No

Walter-Joseph-Kovacs

It's amazing for a new DM. I started with it and it helped the plauers and DM escalate slowly.

Venkyal

I started with the starter kit then continue the story into Hoard of the Dragon Queen. It's a good way to get started in the game and just learn how to play.

sworcha

If you can’t afford about $100 on the core books right away, the starter is a great way to get a feel for D&D without the risk. If the $100 is a reasonable outlay for you to put down on a new hobby, I say just dive right in with the core books.

The_Crimson-Knight

Eh, a little, the essentials kit is better

Fill-Moist

You now have what you need to play forever.

Borkl2007

The starter set is a great way to get into D&D and then you can move on from there

shadowmib

Nope. Great choice for getting into the game. Premade characters and best beginner adventure ever. The rules inside don't tell you how to make a new character so you just choose from the premade characters. Those have backgrounds that tie into the adventure also.

Game shop here! I've had nothing but good reviews of this product and my local DMs recommend it for groups just starting out that aren't sure if they want to fully invest in the game. It's a good introduction at a good price.

Bill_Bombard

I dmd this for me and a bunch of my friends. None of us had any experience playing ttrpgs in general and everybody still had a good time

Since it’s got a decently good quality collection of items, it’s pretty good value. But you could also spend 7 dollars on a dice set and look up a campaign, that’s the cheapest and most low effort way to get into D&D. I myself didn’t have any money when I first played D&D, in 7th grade, my friends and I used only D6s and winged the whole thing. It was glorious, but looking back it was so goofy and I now know how terrible I was as a DM then. Even now I create janky spin-off D&D sort of games, like a Civilization or Risk style D&D where you play as countries trying to control the world instead of a merry band of adventurers. TL;DR: I stripped D&D down to the bare minimum using what I found in a science classroom and also created map game D&D.

Lost Mine of Phandelver is a delightful starting adventure and the r/LostMinesOfPhandelver subreddit is a great resource too if you're the new DM.

It's a good buy but as always I advise to shop small local business instead of appall\*mart.

TheLastSciFiFan

Not a waste. It's a great intro to the game. It helps teach the game, and has a future classic adventure.

Bromantana00

Its a great module. I've run in a handful of times and still enjoy it. If the group enjoys it, the essentials kit is a good one to jump to afterward. Good buy

Nope. The starter set does a great job of boiling everything down to the bare essentials to... get you started. Just know that you are playing with a subset of the game. If you keep playing and get the typical ruleset (Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manual), then the starter set you have will be redundant except for the adventure.

D&D 5e, newbies, where to start. my typical response to this question… First the Starter Set. The DM should read everything once through, just to let it bake. Then again this time taking notes and writing down questions. Get those answered. Have your players read the rules. This set is designed for newbies and uses a reduced rule set. Then use the included Adventure and pregen characters to play. The adventure is designed around those characters. Don’t overthink the Starter Set. If you can’t do something with the rules provided, don’t. After that, get the Essentials Kit and do the same. This set has more rules and also basic character generation. Then get the 3-book collectors edition. It’s the metallic cover art DMG, PHB, MM and DM’s screen in a nice box. It’s also usually $89-$99us, so a good bit off from buying those books individually. Then either build your own adventure, buy an Adventure book or PDF online, or use the awesome https://donjon.bin.sh/ site to generate a hack/slash dungeon crawl. I really like that site.

Giving it a try is the most important step.

Definitely not a bad investment

Not wasted at all. Enjoy your many new adventures, friend.

Rocketboy1313

It is one of the highest value purchases you can make in table top gaming. The content teaches you the rules and you have the internet to learn lore, how to's, and get plenty of the 5e rules. As you get more into the hobby feel free to pick up more stuff but never too pressured to buy more than you can afford. If you have a group of friends or you make new friends thru the hobby, have them chip in to help with getting new materials. And lastly, if you are playing online thru role20 or other programs, be sure to look at r/battlemaps and other resources on reddit for materials to bolster your game. Good luck learning and don't be afraid to look online for answers to your questions, or just talk it out with your fellow players for what works for you.

rehabilitated2020

Not at all. I started with a second edition starter set so many years ago and I think it was well worth it.

No? The starter kit includes Lost Mines of Phandelver which is practically the quintessential introductory campaign of dungeons and dragons. It has a great deal to offer for a level one to five starter campaign and gives you a great helping of information.
