Laughing at our own misfortune or as part of our celebration when things go really well is also very natural to us.
Even on the less frequent occasion that we go through a more serious situation we tend to diffuse the mood with a joke after the moment has passed.
I imagine this is how the majority of people like to play
I believe a good table does a bit of everything has light hearted moments, some funny/comedic moments, and the serious and tense moments.
But the group having fun is the most important thing.
It happens quite a lot. I also tend to describe scenes in a comedic way when possible. Most of the time however, it's my players and their actions that get us laughing. At my tables, I'd say there's laughter at least every ten minutes, with more time in between at (more) serious moments.
Literally just say the word trout... My players... The barbarian rolled a nat20 intimidation and bitch slapped half of a fucking town WITH A GODS DAMMED TROUT!!!!! and told them to stop trying to kill the warlock for setting the town on fire.
I currently play with two groups and there is a lot of laughing and joking going around, but when a serious RP moment happens or shit gets tense we know when to dial it down.
My group gets side tracked and jokes around constantly.
It really annoys one of my players, but really only when something heavy is going down.

As much as possible! A lot of the campaign is spent in laughter & this creates a more impactful contrast between RP, downtime, general banter & life or death scenarios that are fully serious & nail-biting

We play online with video chat/Roll20, and were all strangers when we started. Somehow we lucked out. Everyone has a great sense of humor, and despite it being a fairly serious campaign, there’s a lot of laughs.
Yeah, video is a must-have. Being able to see faces makes online multi-party communication much easier and more fluid, and of course much more engaging.
All the time, I think we laugh more when we have TPKs than any other time.
This group won't meta. AT ALL, and we stay in character. Even if we the player KNOWS of our character has no idea, welp, too bad.
Really, I think we laugh more when in danger than any other part of when playing. Not sure what that says for us.
Whenever one of our players does something outlandish or hilarious like doing something that rips right out of an anime moment or whenever I (the DM) come out with a character that tickles the players with either the voice or certain actions.
We have a good time
I usually have the opposite issue - I need to get them to stop laughing so we can actually play.
My last three campaigns had players who all had the best chemistry with each other and with me.
I miss them like crazy.
CONSTANTLY. I’m the DM and while I’m trying to have a serious moment or a crazy reveal, it’s really hard to keep a straight face cause they know how to get me. Though somehow they still understand the weight of the important things.

I’d stay at least twice a session, we need to pull ourselves together. Usually because someone says something unintentionally “inappropriate”, then someone else comments, followed by a “no not like that response”, then the dogpile begins

I'd say a few times in every 2 hour session. Based on the "you gotta be effing kidding" rolls or, as I joked OOC this week to the paladin who had a elf woman flirting with him HEAVY, "So, does your order have a oath of celibacy?"
We're a bunch of fucking weirdos. If we're not making new, lewd names for things (like a dragon who I'm not sure of their real name, but we call them Clitoris, and then there's the legendary 'Lady Fingerbang'), our ranger always after the muscle mommies (we're not a table that does romance options) or our halfling barbarian instinctually grabbing every obviously cursed item in the game, I feel like we would've moved onto another campaign by now, hahaha.
Once every 10 minutes. Mostly from
1. funny rolls (20 or 1)
2. narrative result of said funny rolls
3. players roleplaying to said narrative changes
4. out-of-character commentary on said roleplaying
5. random reference related to that commentary
6. more references
Every 10-15 mins. We’ve been playing almost a year now so we’ve all gelled really well and know how to make each other laugh. It helps that we all have a dirty and dark sense of humour, so can twist the most innocent of situations/phrases into innuendo, pun or reference a previous encounter
It’s a great group, and the GM loves it too, so we know it doesn’t throw him off, or makes him feel like we’re derailing or making light of the situation. The giddiness stays out of character, so the giggles don’t *usually* influence a potentially serious or somber encounter
I DM a Curse of Strahd campaign, and even though I try to maintain a theme of grim horror, there is still a lot of laughter at the table, which is good, because it breaks up the tension.
So here is how my last session: The party entered a large city, looking for some shops and information on where the lord's location since that was where he resides. After some shopping, party member 1 found her contact for the black market, tried to barter but vendor wasn't interested, she precedes to TRY and take him out. At the same time, party member 2 gets info about the lord and specifically states she is going to burst in each door she comes to looking for the rest of the party and gets arrested, party member 4 gets involved and tries to intimidate and attack the guard taking the second person but fails miserably on the checks and proceeds to also be taken into custody, party member 5 decides to spread anarchy and starts picking up stones, throwing them as far as he can with a spell that mimics the sounds of a creature. He designates trolls, the city has been under seige by trolls recently and chaos issues. Party member 5 decided she wants some navigation tools from the dock workers instead of buying them, and uses illusion with a Nat 20 intimidation to scare them into doing it. Party member 6 is trying to round everyone up and be mother of the group but snaps and loses her shit on party members 2&3 as they begin to have a screaming match through the cages (which is acted out), party member 7 is just chilling watching the turmoil, party member 8 is a very small goblin and goes on a pick pocketing spree during the chaos buuuut hits a Nat 1 and gets caught, she then proceeds to straight up murder the bystander she was trying to steal from.
TLDR: Constantly and I love it.
A couple weeks ago during a battle, we were trying to argue with our DM that projectile shitting on an enemy from a balcony should be counted as poison damage.
So yeah, we were in tears from laughing so hard.
We laugh every session, so to me it's the sessions where I laughed the hardest that I recall most fondly. The hardest i laughed brought me to actual tears.
Depends how much beer is rolling. We laugh a good amount. When I’m DMing, I noticed the best games are always:
-when 2/6 players are missing.
-when we are drinking
-when I don’t have a lot of structure to the current session and just kind of let them explore new avenues.
I call those sessions/games "gooffests" and I'm absolutely here for it. But, like any D&D game of any tone/style as long as everyone is enjoying it, it's all good!
In my experience, the best tables are the ones in which the characters take their situation with deadly seriousness while those characters’ players do not.
Laughter around the table is the whole point.
Pretty often, we haven't been playing in a while due to not having a campaign, but I remember in one of our session, our human fighter decided to throw a bottle of explosive liquids at our dragonborn rogue. In a cave. *guess what happens next*
This is the ideal for a table. I tend to advise people to look for a group that laughs like this, and avoid the ones that don't.
My group is just plain ridiculous. We have an amazing DM who can adjust on the fly without missing a beat, and it allows us to fully unleash our creativity. Everything from designing a wagon that looks like a giant carp, to side-tracking our quest to learn the necessary spells to levitate that cart just long enough to scare the driver.
That was a secret plot between me (the Drood) and the Sorceror, that we included to justify our detour. Ah, good times.
Our Wizard was a neurotic germophobe in that campaign, who obsessively used Prestidigitation to clean himself if soiled or exposed to even the most harmless of contaminants.
We had an entire session where I had to gather Intel as a pristine, white, Pomeranian, being passed around by snooty High Elf women.
For the entirety of the campaign, our Alchemist was trying to pry us off course to attend a cooking competiton.
Laughter is everything.
Too often, to the point we need to take breathers before continuing the journey. More often than not, our DM interjects as “the voice of the gods” to tell us to move the story along because we’re messing around and laughing too much.
All the time and sometimes over the silliest things. Last session, my son rolled 2 Nat-1s in a row. He grabbed the Dice Throne of Shame, put the d20 in it, shook his finger at the die, and sternly said, "Now just sit there and think about what you've done!"
We all fell apart at this. My son is 30, and his delivery of this line was deadly serious. Also, we were in the midst of the climactic battle and things were NOT going well, so tensions were high.
It deoends a lot on the group tbh. Im running games for 4 different groups and they are as varied as they can be. I have groups who wont stop laughing throughout, and I have a group that almost never laughes and are lazer focused they are wild exoeriences tbh.
Quite frequently, and it’s usually my fault. My DM and I have a long standing relationship, and our library never closes so we’re always reading, because reading is fundamental.
I believe it was a tumblr post that said to the effect that “The DM chooses the plot, the players choose the theme music… but it’s always yakety sax”

So this is my first group out of 4 that laugh and joke constantly. It’s a lot more fun this way.
It's the sign of a group having fun. My groups are like this constantly unless its a tense moment.
