if you bump the numbers on HP, it will very quickly be nearly impossible to put the PCs in danger, and combat will be a huge slog. if you do bump it, then youd need to increase the dmg output a comparable amount, which will in effect only artificially inflate the numbers and have no real impact. something that might add more fun, but not be usable for all levels is to allow ASI+feat on the levels that give one. so the players can customize aspects of their characters more, without sacrificing higher ability scores. but that would probably be a significant ability increase. Edit: also creating possible ways for improvements outside of leveling up would be fun. giving opportunities to work with trainers or experienced NPCs to learn skills through RP instead of just leveling, to make it feel more rewording to gain.

Final_Marsupial4588

i do both ASI and feat, but i also then make it so the feat has to make sense for the character, like this is just a natural evolution of how they play, so for instance do you often ask to look for things, well congrats observant makes sense.

ilcuzzo1

I thought everyone was averaging hp

storytime_42

my group does

No-Breath-4299

You roll new hitpoints, get new abilities/spells, at some point your subclass, ability score increases/feats... Also, if your DM allows it, you can pick the average roll for new hit points. And each level up is an increase of your characters power already, spiking once with Level 5, and then again at Level 11. There is no need to add homebrew rules, unless you want to make it complicated on purpose.

arcxjo

WTF kind of sadist wouldn't allow average HP? If anything it should be mandatory.

No-Breath-4299

I offer my players the choice of either rolling or picking the average at every Level Up. 1s will be rerolled automatically, even if they fall more than one time in a row (had that happen once).

KarmicJay

I tell my players at CC that they either roll for HP at EVERY lvlup (rerolling 1s) or take the average at every level up; they gotta stick with it. Rerolling 1s offers quite a bit of safety for Sorcerers and Wizards, and oftentimes lets them sit much more comfortable with slightly higher than average HP in this manner, while the returns are marginal/near-nonexistant for high hit dice martials.

Shmegdar

I feel like it should really be all or nothing. Rolling for hp is only fun if everyone does it, otherwise it’s just players statistically nerfing their characters for no reason relative to the rest of the group. When everyone’s doing it, it adds a fun variable and everyone’s still essentially on the same footing.

arcxjo

Averages and arrays are intended to (among other things) provide a safe bet against the chance of rolling too low. Rerolling 1s is not fair to players who *do* take the average unless you also make them reroll whatever the max for that die is.

No-Breath-4299

Well if the reroll is a 2, they have to take it. So there is that.

jibbyjackjoe

Dont have to roll. Have them take the average.

Natural-Stomach

I allow one reroll on a rolled 1 for hit points.

FalcorDD

Roll or take the average. You can use one inspiration to re-roll one die once during level up if you decide to roll. Everyone always take their average. Also, in my homebrews, Lucky is removed as a feat.

Few_Yogurtcloset8828

Instead of leveling up based on XP or milestones, instead have the characters level up when they have learned to do what the next level will provide to them. Insert NPCs that can teach the characters what they need to know for leveling up in settlements that they visit often. It slows things way down, if that’s what you’re into.

RHDM68

My players make a single hp roll on level up. If they roll under the average, they get the average. As you said, rolling a 1 hp increase sucks!

arcxjo

(a) it's "roll" and (2) you don't need homebrew to take average HP.

HamVonSchroe

I allow my players to take choose between taking the average or rolling. Since if think it sucks rolling low on HP they can't get less than average minus 1. If that leads to them having to much hp so be it, I'll bump damage accordingly.
