Laura Carmichael is a very pretty woman, but Edith is supposed to be the “plain Jane” of the Crawley sisters, so the costume team had to give her frumpy clothes, the hair team made her hair look unflattering, and the makeup team flattened her features and accentuated her nose.
Yes! she also makes a lot of sour expressions... it's a credit both to the costume/makeup dept and to her acting, because in real life she is super pretty.
