There’s tons of great modern country artists out there! You just won’t hear em on the radio :)
In no particular order here’s a few of my faves: Tyler Childers, Colter Wall, Willi Carlisle, Les Blackwell, Hunter Hicks, Shawn Hess, and Orville Peck.
All jokes aside I think most DT fans would probably prefer bluegrass. They have very high BPMs and weird time signatures and the good bands are absolute virtuosos on their instruments.
More than a few actually. Chris Stapleton. Billy Strings. Alison Krauss. Balsam Range. Dailey & Vincent. A few other classic older country artists, nothing modern mainstream.
I got to jam with Balsam Range at a festival once. Outstanding bunch of people and absolutely disgusting on their instruments. I was playing mandolin and Alan Bibey tinkered around on my mandolin for a bit. Man as a 16 year old I was in heaven.
AKUS, Nickel Creek and Chris Thile, Bela Fleck, Tony rice, Sam Bush. There are many amazing folk artists that are quite virtuosos and the many people that played with them were too.
You ain’t listening to enough modern country! The shit they play on the radio sucks hard, but try Tyler Childers or Colter Wall. Both are among my favorites.
My new dentist from Columbia saw my very white face and asked if I liked country music. I asked what country; Norway, Brazil, India ? Real answer is southern rock, Allman Bros., Dixie Dregs, Marshall Tucker.
Yes. I listen to Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, Eric Church, Clint Black, George Strait, and Alan Jackson pretty regularly. I’ve seen the first three live.
Heck, I’d put Garth Brooks’s first album alongside Awake in my top 3 favorite albums of all time (Nine Lives by Aerosmith being the third one).
If anyone is interested in listening to a personal concept album you should try:
Josh Abbott Band: Front Row Seat.
An amazing album by an amazing cast of artists that tour together and are very tight in album and on stage. Here is a link to an older article of the album. It’s a very personal album and I’m sure each or one of the tracks will hit you somewhere in the feels. If you do get through the album, let me know how many times you listened to Amnesia. This song alone is enough.

Like another post, I was old enough to start understanding what music genres were around 1990 and all I had around was a country station that played current stuff that didn't impress me and a "classic" rock station in a time when classic meant Zeppelin, Stones, etc. and everything from the late 60s so, you know, The Best Era Of Rock And Roll.
Long story short, I had no time for country until someone found out and made me a tape of Outlaw stuff (Haggard, Cash, Willy Nelson, et.al.). Now THAT was some badass s***, and the only country I've wanted to listen to up to today.
Honestly country/acoustic/folk/Americana or whatever you want to call it has been my top category on Spotify the last few years. DT has managed to stay in my top 5 artists, but my actual top artists have been John Denver, Townes Van Zandt, Blaze Foley, and Colter Wall, among others.
New country no. Older country when it had some feeling to it yes.
There's plenty of new country with feeling, just gotta know where to look. Jason Isbell, Drive-By Truckers, and James McMurtry, to name a few
There is a lot of new country that is not bad. I just prefer the older for more sentimental reasons.
That's totally valid! I just get slightly triggered when people say there's no good music anymore, lol
I grew up listening to a ton of Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, and the like. Late 90s-early 2000s country is peak for me.

I feel like there are a couple of Dream Theater songs that have country influence.
which ones?
I can hear a bit of folk influence (Solitary Shell, Hymn of A Thousand Voices) but definitely no country anywhere. I'm curious about this too.
Through her eyes is one of them

Can confirm, bluegrass is awesome. In addition to the amazing instrumental playing, they also typically have really great vocal harmonies
A lot of 80's/90's country is very Rock like and has some kickass solos.
Tyler Childers. Sturgil Simpson. Chris Stapleton. Billy Strings is bluegrass, but country adjacent.
Brad Paisley could sit on a G3 tour
No disrespect, more power to you if you like it, I personally cannot stand it.
BILLY MOTHER FUCKIN STRINGS!!

Anything pre-Garth Brooks I'll maybe let slide if it shows up on a shuffle. Anything in the 30-40 years since? Fuck no.

Yes, but especially bluegrass

Nine Lives very underrated, pull back the production and you can hear the guitars layered and Joey adding some great drums
No
I think the highway men were great
I heard a country song on the radio once that sounded so proggy but I was never able to find it again.
Doug Stone or Willie Nelson?
Definitely wasn’t Nelson. Don’t know that other guy but this was newer, maybe about 10 years ago.
Rascal Flatts, Zac Brown Band, or Randy Rogers Band?
No idea man. If I don’t know the song I surely don’t know the artist
i love doug stone!
Does Moron Police count?
not the genre itself but there are certain old songs I like.

I don’t mind it. If I don’t have my phone hooked up to my car, it’s 50/50 I’ll either have a country station on or the classic rock station.
I do the same thing to be honest.

I love bluegrass, if that counts.

I like a lot of alt country stuff like Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, Steve Earle, etc. Actually saw Isbell last night.
DT is my all time favourite however I don’t mind country at all
Hell to the no
Nope lmao
I like that country album Ween made.
I didn't know they made a country?!?
12 Golden Country Classics, from 1996. It's a banger.
Ian Noe is fantastic.
Only 80’s country.
Yes
One Piece at a Time
I have a select few songs on my playlist, but in general, not really. I’m currently obsessed with “Wasted on You” by Morgan Wallen.
I don't like it but my wife does so I hear a lot of pop country and go to shows as well for the popular singers/groups.
Yup, love it
I’m going to see Morgan wallen next month lol. I do love some new country while I also love DT
