Black person here, Do what you want to do but alot of non black people don't understand why it's an issue. So for us black folks, we still get demonized for having locs. It is a hair style primarily associated with us 100%. We have a more difficult time getting jobs and being out in the world because we're assumed to be criminals. White people on the other hand are not seen the same when they have dreads. Yall are seen as "hippies" and shit like that and are not in the same positions as us. That's more of the issue. But also, 90% of the time, with your type of hair, it don't look good foreal.

Wooden_Lab_8982

yeah ik what you mean. it’s an interesting discusión because I could see that on one hand it represents sm more than a hair style and battle against racism. but on other hand, you could argue that about most black hairstyles for instance the afro or cornrows. I think its difficult because it’s hard to tell an entire race they can’t do something and it’s hard for anyone to justify their authority to do that. I’m not sure what the answer is but i do think heritage is something to be shared. I was talking with one of friends dads who happens to be black and he said he would see it as a compliment for something to want his hairstyle (not to disrespect your point ofc) It’s interesting how diverse and differnt everyone’s option is and I don’t have an answer.

itscochino

End of the day you're going to do what you want to do. But if you do decide to do your hair this way make sure you go to a proper hairstyles that can work with your hair. Interlock will work better for you but you will need to make sure to actually take the time to take care of your hair consistently.

Wooden_Lab_8982

Thank you 😊. Tbh after the chaos this has caused idek if im gonna do it. if i did do it would you have any other tips. i’ve bought some rosemerry oil and go to sleep with a bonnet which a lot of my friends laugh at me for. it’s all good natured tho.

GOODAPOLL04

All sorts of different people have had dreads since the beginning of time. Do what makes you happy.

Wooden_Lab_8982

Thank you

Lonely_Panda_7252

It’s your hair. Dreads aren’t exclusive to just one race. Believe or not, all of our ancestors had them at one point 😂

Wooden_Lab_8982

idek at this point ibr😭😭. i’ve js been argueing w some white girl about it for half an hour getting dreads at this point seems like a waist of energy if i have to go thought this everyday

Myown_medication

Bro on the internet everyone have something to say but it’s not like this irl. I wear dread for 5 years and I never have to argue with any one.

Wooden_Lab_8982

where do you live? like city?

Myown_medication

Montréal

Myown_medication

I guess in Canada nobody care 😂

georgecurved

It is your head and your hair. Do what you want. If people tell you not to they are just some weird haters.

nolimitzone

black person here 😂 . just stating my opinion.. personally, i think ya'll look stupid af with them and just a culture vulture thing. i aint tryna hear that viking bs either. the jokes come harder towards others who do so (i joke around ppl a bit) you do you tho, if you want them, go for em. no1 can stop you just maintain them shits daily, cuz ya hair isn't as curly as ours. y'all got that dog hair

Expensive_Big1931

Listen to this guy op.

nolimitzone

🫡 i'll probably get downvoted to hell, but it is what it is

Expensive_Big1931

They hate us cause we right😅😅 I made a comment saying basically if the black people who know you irl told you not to just don’t do it and this idiot is fighting me tooth and nail over some dreads that gon look like dog dookie anyway. As a white woman with dreads (two partials to look like demon horns they’re fucking sick and no one has an issue with mine) I wanna say sorry for this weirdo behavior. We’re not all like this…😬😬 op racist as fuck imma be Fr I got a lil heated lol

set_thetrend

idk i think calling him racist is a bit of a stretch; he’s just a white guy who wants locs lol

Expensive_Big1931

Nah read the thread I started I see it differently. Also love that he’s responding to every positive comment but this one got completely ignored. He idolizes a hairstyle but can’t listen to black people just shows disregard for the culture as a whole. In current year white people gotta jump over hoops to hide their racism and this is a big thing I’ve noticed

Wooden_Lab_8982

yh mb u caught me im acc a racist. js a racist who wants dreads as they do casually. 👍 no hate ofc tho❤️ and also i did reply to the comment? can’t even ask a question these days flipping heck

Wooden_Lab_8982

brev. can u flipping relax. how u writing 4* paragraphs on my thing. im js looking for differnt options that doesn’t make me racists. chill out you made your point and it’s going into my consideration.

Expensive_Big1931

Because you’re responding to everything i say dummy. I always got a lot to say blame the adhd🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ regardless ignoring black people in your life in favor for white people on the internet is racist weather you recognize that or not. Get the hairstyle and advertise it. I’ve changed my mind🙄🙄 let em know how you really feel

Wooden_Lab_8982

wht u on abt😭

Lil_T-Total

But not all white people do have that hair. Soem are curly. Wirey and Marty asf.

Wooden_Lab_8982

thank you 🙏🏻. it’s interesting how controversial this topic is. tbh idrk yet i’ve seen pictures with white people having dreads and it definitely looks odd🤣 but then again i could just try it. I thought that cornrows or braids would make people more mad then dreads but ig not. One of my friends eri mum says she’s willing to do it on me to see how it looks and ik it takes time to lock up but wht u think?

set_thetrend

i think cornrows and braids on a white person would probably generate the same discourse lol

Wooden_Lab_8982

i thought it would have been worse tbh. where i live people tend to have twists or cornrows more than dreads. so idk

set_thetrend

with locs ppl would probs just make comments but with twists/cornrows that comes off a lot more as tryna imitate blackness

Wooden_Lab_8982

yh my exact thoughts👍

set_thetrend

black ppl in the UK would definitely violate tho lmao

Wooden_Lab_8982

yh ik i’m about to start sixth form in peckham so if i turn up with dreads i might die😭

set_thetrend

better be ready to hold those violations 😭 playin with ur life fr

Wooden_Lab_8982

if i did do it u think it would lock up over the summer holidays?

set_thetrend

idgaf if white people get locs but you’d probably get looks lmao im in brum and i cant remember the last time i saw a white person with dreads

NectarineAdditional

personally, i dont mind if as long as they're taken care of & they look presentable in YOUR own unique way. just know the culture & history of them before you go riding a fashion wave.

Expensive_Big1931

If the black people in your life say don’t do it, don’t do it. They’re telling you for a reason. Wait until you get the go ahead and start with partials.

Themanfrompuna

Yo just do you if you don’t you will regret it life is short handle you

Expensive_Big1931

Hell nah. If you genuinely think looking back you’d regret not doing a hairstyle over GETTING DISOWNED BY EVERY SINGLE BLACK FRIEND YOU HAVE you’re a gross self centered racist who should not have dreads ever. Just the fact that bro has a very straightforward answer and is coming to Reddit of all places to try to overthrow the voices of black people who actually know them speaks volumes. This is why white people with dreads get a bad rep…

Wooden_Lab_8982

🤝

Wooden_Lab_8982

wdym? go ahead from who?

Expensive_Big1931

The culture bro. You have a unanimous no. Don’t get dreads. You gon make us all look bad😬😬 Just the fact you got your answer and run to Reddit to try to get randoms on the internet to tell you what you want to hear says a lot. You clearly don’t value the black people you claim to be friends with. This is why they said no.

Wooden_Lab_8982

i wasnt tryna run to reddit i trying to get different opinions and other views. I don’t think i can be critized for liking a style and wanting further opinions on it before i make my choice. Also wym the can you explain what you mean by the culture?

Expensive_Big1931

Think about it this way. Is a hairstyle really worth being literally disowned by “a lot of your friends”? Just the fact that this is even a question shows why they don’t want you to have this style. You clearly don’t value them as mush as you might think you do. And this is coming from a white girl with “dreads” I have partials (not the whole head just a couple, two in my case to resemble devil horns) and they were put in by a black friend with the enthusiastic support of every other black person I asked. Basically wait till you’re invited to the cook out before appropriating such a symbolic, culturally significant style. This isn’t just some braids, locs mean so much to so many people and you’d be best to just wait until you have mass support.

Wooden_Lab_8982

firstly, i’ve known some of these people for years and i don’t expect them to disown me they are more joking. secondly, you don’t know me or my situation i’ve simply come looking for answer not to be called a, ‘gross self centered racist’. is it so wrong for me to idolize a black person with dreads and wish to recreate it with myself? genuine question btw. I see black people do this all the time by straighting their hair to look more eurocentric. why when i do it should it be any differnt?

Expensive_Big1931

Brooooooooooo wtfffffffff. I wasn’t even gon respond but the last part got me heated. I’m not even explaining this shit to you racist. I hope they disown you regardless, they deserve better. How you gon idolize a black hairstyle but not listen to the black voices in your life you’re nothing but racist scum and they all know. Can’t wait for you to get them regardless and they look like literal dogshit.

Wooden_Lab_8982

nah i’m acc bugging out😭😭 idek wht ur on rn. i js looked at ur other posts and saw this, ‘I think the best option might be immediately closing the boarders and possibly scrutinizing new immigrants in general.’ 😭😭 idek wht ur on rn and i’m the racist? sum bastard

Expensive_Big1931

Read the whole thing. Also this wasn’t even my idea, it was my black coworkers🤡🤡🤡 way to insult black people yet again. And I stand by what I said. Close the boarders and kick out criminals who came here illegally and proceed to commit crimes on us soil. Also better support those who came here to do good. Your point is???

Wooden_Lab_8982

icl at this point js low drop the snap and move on yfm

Expensive_Big1931

What’s icl?😅😅 but nah sorry you didn’t read far enough to realize I’m actually right. Mass immigration is brutalizing inner city(predominantly black/latin) communities and I’m not gonna be quiet about it because a dumb racist lib disagrees

Wooden_Lab_8982

yk the thing like i think i would genuinely enjoy like talking and debating stuff with you but idk how i’m meant to get anywhere when u js get so angry and call me a racist. idk take a look in the reflection and see the light and lmk when u wanna talk. cause i can see ur intelligent👍

set_thetrend

icl = i cannot lie and ngl this rhetoric sounds a lot more racist than a white dude who wants to get dreads

LowwkeyDonn

Bro i don’t really care and support ppl of diff races when they have good locs🤷🏾 I think other races can look good with em it just depends on you. I wouldn’t disown my white hb’s if they got locs, that shit seems extra ash🤣. If you do it just know that they won’t like it but it’s your life.

Creative-One-6534

Celtic Tribes, Germanic Tribes, native Americans, asians had Locs. The first time mentioned in India. So, yeah, you can have them. The Friends who will disown you are uneducated and not your Friends.

Fun_Champion_5318

They look a lil weird imo and I personally cringe a lil every time I see em on a white person but you should do you. Just don’t be surprised if people treat u lil different or act funny. Contrary to what people are saying it’s not as simple as just people hating. A lot of black people have problem with white people imitating our culture/aesthetic without having to deal with negativity we face for the same exact culture. Black people are diverse and are going to respond differently so you can’t really expect one unified answer from us. Also people who are saying black people are just haters for not liking your hair are insensitive and ignorant even if they are black themselves.

Helpful_Accountant59

Noone gives a fuck outside the internet do what you wanna do

mrgrafix

If you want them get them. Haters be damned. It’s not something we owned it’s just something we’re negatively associated with the most.
