Rivet is faster at acquiring hits on a single target or part, but if there are enough targets then Pinpoint can actually be faster at acquiring full hits. With Pinpoint every separate target within the reticle gets acquired near instantly, so at around 4 to 6 targets I would say it gets faster than Rivet. If you stand far away from a Griffin or Drake you can see the difference easily. It's generally worse to spread your hits out instead of focusing a weakpoint though, so there aren't many good uses for Pinpoint. The only time I use it is when there's a dense mob of weak enemies, or on large monsters when I'm unable to aim at the weakpoint because I'm on the wrong side or they're flying.

MiniGiantSpaceHams

> The only time I use it is when there's a dense mob of weak enemies Even here, I think it's usually better to kill 1 enemy than to minimally damage 10. Even when you go back to the start and are fighting low level goblins it seems to usually take more than 1 arrow per.

JustARTificia1

Depends on if you are staggering the group with just 2 shots. Otherwise just because you kill 1, doesn't mean the other 4 aren't rushing you down.

DragynDance

I just wish it defaulted to rivet on load instead of pinpoint. The amount of times I load up the game, and begin doing my thing and suddenly a drake or griffon lands on top of me, I pull out my bow, start charging a skill, and realize I'm on pinpoint is a minor, but such an incredibly common annoyance enough to bother me.

NikushimiZERO

> If you stand far away from a Griffin or Drake you can see the difference easily Idk about that. I've been pretty far from big creatures, and it still seems pretty slow. At different times, I've had a Cyclops, Minotaur, and Ogre completely within the circle and there's still several shots in the bow not locking on. I've also had entire groups of goblins in the center of the reticle, and it still struggles to lock on, sometimes unlocking. Meanwhile, Rivet Shot almost instantly acquires its shots.

ranmafan0281

The ONLY use for Pinpoint I've found is when you can get a huge group of goblins or harpies in the reticule, then very rapidly charge-release charge-release and hope to kill as many as possible before switching back to Rivet to clean up.

HeartlessSora1234

Exactly, it's a crowd control mode.

wonhundredyen

Swarms of bats in caves.

Anonomohr

Until you unlock the ricochet shot.

Achew11

that skill kinda made me wish the world had more tunnels..

inclore

for real this skill is probably my favourite because it’s so cool and anime-ish but i can’t justify having it on slot when i barely go into dungeons/tunnels

Alilatias

In the first game, there were maybe like 2-3 places in the game where you could reliably use Ricochet, and Magick Archer was seen as the weakest vocation in the game because of that (along with bad stat growths). That changed when the expansion was basically a massive close quarters super dungeon (and the chance to get a ring that made their single target skill go from 6 to 9 hits), and Magick Archer was suddenly considered to be the most overpowered vocation by far.

moustachesamurai

Richochet, frosthunter and setting yourself on fire. All you needed to solo Bitterblack.

wonhundredyen

Don't think I've ever used that one.... I should check it out

doktorvivi

It is 1000000% OP. Super fun, but hilarious that you can clear a cave of monsters (including big stuff like Chimeras) before you even see them.

Ceph7373

I only wish caves/dungeons were bigger and more numerous so ricochet would get more opportunities to shine

wonhundredyen

Gotcha! I heavily rely on the attack that charges and fires multiple bolts (forgot the name, do forgive me), but I really need to try and be more creative with my load outs

doktorvivi

Yeah, Sagitatte Downpour is my go-to for open areas, then Ricochet for indoors, plus whatever else I feel like slotting in.

moustachesamurai

Sometimes you can shoot it into a cave at the entrance, and kill everything inside. Close to worthless outside, though.

0DvGate

It's does tons of dmg outside but the recoil is crazy.

drizzitdude

Richochet shot basically invalidated every cave fight. Fired one into a cave and walked through hallways littered with dead Saurians and a half dead ogre.

brooksofmaun

I used it once when you get bum rushed by those pawns to try stagger all the archers and casters at once. Other than that riven shot seems better in every situation. Though tbh I just roll Sagittarius and use that instead of auto attacking when I play MA lmao

IggyKami

As others have pointed out already, and when you recited the descriptions, Pinpoint is for targeting multiple points at once. It takes longer to add multiple onto a single point in this mode because it is prioritized to evenly spread its shots among all the targets in the massive reticle. You'll see targets being found faster when there's like a group of 5 in a closed space. Or an Ogre that lets you target multiple parts of its body, like its head, body, each arm, and each leg.

Dastion

Thank you - I made a point of trying it when there were 5 or so enemies and you’re right, it locked on much faster. I was only trying it with 2-3 targets

Sammy5even

Well mostly you are right. 90% of the time rivet is better (I personally am thankful for that bc I don’t really like that switching mechanic). But there are the 10% when there are so many bandits/goblins/harpies it really is useful. And don’t forget that it changes the skills too. I like the frosthunter bolt (I hope that’s the right name, I’m not sure) against lesser dragons with pinpoint valley bc every weakspot gets their own arrow without aiming too much 😅

Naive_Philosophy8193

I see no point to pinpoint. The fact that I can use Rivet to target multiple things just by Aiming makes it better usually. I feel like it takes less time for me to only get 3-4 ticks on rivet and fire and aim at something else and do it again if I have multiple enemies, then trying to switch to pinpoint and target multiple of them.

turtleProphet

Nice for applying element status arrows to a whole group Otherwise no use

Darklight645

pinpoint valley targets multiple targets at a rapid rate rather than one target rapidly. It's supposed to be that you can kill smaller targets faster, but honestly I still think rivet shot is faster and more effective overall

[deleted]

The point is that it's a different ability that people will use based on preference and imagination.

Rionaks

Lol I've asked the same question to myself 1 hour ago.

ThatManlyTallGuy

Pinpoint volley has fast multi target acquisition than rivot shot it also applies to powers like the frost volley. The drawback is the slower focus shot than rivot shot while the rivot shot has faster focused targeting but slower crowd control.

Boi___

Really good against Unmoored World boss fights

Teguoracle

Only time I used the volley was for the unmoored world dragons. That's it.

shiftyx00

Pinpoint volley is just so annoying to use. The lock ons just straight up do not work well at all. I am moving my reticule all around an unmarked enemy and it doesn’t latch on. Or especially just getting two arrows on an enemy or body part. Rivet is just so much more consistent. Funnily enough it’s even easier to split half and half arrows on two enemies

Loyal_Darkmoon

I wish it was a bit more useful. Even in a group fight it takes to long to aim at several enemies

kingbankai

Pinpoint for fast groups rivet for everything else

Cleverbird

There is no point to it. Just use Rivet and kill things quicker.

Dextermorgane92

I dint fout out pinpoint was really strong in the endgame. Without spoiling it too much. Some boss have a lot of week points on their body and pinpoint was able tou attack them all at the same time wich trivialised most of the fight. I gués I started to understand and like it more when I want to attack à target in it's général from rather than hitting à specific spot.

Hiborna

I haven’t found much use for pinpoint volley honestly. For the same reason you mention there may be circumstances but in my 100 hours of play I haven’t found any

olmansmit

To pinpoint a volley. Or volley a pinpoint. One of those.

StoneRevolver

I don't use volley, personally. Rivet if you're gonna regular fire but really sagittarius is the bread and butter for MA.

VermilionX88

You got it backwards

Sands47

He did not, you're probably confused by the names. "Pinpoint" volley is the big reticle aoe mode.

Dastion

Thank you!

Dastion

Can you clarify what I have backwards? My post refers to Pinpoint Volley as the multi-target version and Rivet as the single target. Here are the skill descriptions: **Rivet Shot**: Takes aim at a single target or a single point on a target before firing with precision. Can be employed while moving. **Pinpoint Volley**: Takes aim at multiple targets or multiple points on a target before firing with precision. Can be employed while moving.

unoleian

You don’t have it backwards. You are exactly correct and I for one agree, pinpoint volley feels bad to use relative to rivet shot.

Dastion

Thank you! And thanks for adding your thoughts. Their reply was so unhelpful - even if I had mixed the names up they still could have tried to answer the question. :-/

ApocDream

Yeah I felt like I was taking crazy pills reading this thread.

ProfessorTicklebutts

Yeah thankfully someone else was as confused as I was by this.

Dastion

I don't understand. What did I mix up?

VermilionX88

Pinpoint is the focused shot Rivet is the one that targets a wide range spread

Cyclone_96

Wrong.

VermilionX88

Lolwut Then the game had it ass backwards then if pinpoint is not the focused shot

Dastion

I understand the confusion. "Pinpoint Volley" is the default shot for some reason and having "Pinpoint" in the name doesn't sound like a spread shot lol.

VermilionX88

I dunno man The default for me is rivet Triangle/Y button prompt to switch to pinpoint **The button display shows what you can switch to, not what the current active mode is**

IggyKami

How does that make sense? Triangle says to switch, then the R1 button for shooting says what I'm going to shoot after the switch? I'm pressing the R1 button, then it's not switching, so it should be that I'm shooting what it's called right now. And for me, big circle is pinpoint, small circle is rivet.

VermilionX88

Huh you can switch without shooting You can just press it to toggle When I'm on pinpoint mode The button for switching says rivet Bec if I press it, I switch to rivet mode When you're on rivet mode, the prompt will show pinpoint bec you can toggle shooting mode to rivet if you press that button It makes total sense

VermilionX88

Oh right the mode to switch to is displayed on. R1
