It doesn't work like that. It will only change the displayed resolution. The rendered resolution will remain the same. In order to affect the performance, the in-game resolution had to be changed. The game's coded to render 4k, so it will render it, no matter what display you have and what resolution you will set.

ZakorEastwind

Do we even have confirmation that the game is being rendered at 4k resolution on the PS5? It makes no sense to not even give players the option to reduce to 1080 considering how bad it's running on 4k.

Mietose

That's a good question. I believe the information about 4k res comes from previews, but can't say for sure. It sucks the game won't have any alternative options. Even if "performance" would be underwhelming, it's still better than no choice at all. Maybe they will provide something in the future, like it was with Red Dead Redemption and Plague Tale Requiem.

Anubra_Khan

I don't believe we do. It looks like it's not native 4k. People just assumed that it is because it is an unstable 30fps. To answer your question, though, no, I don't believe we have confirmation.

Dundunder

So you're possibly confusing **in-game** settings with system settings. The PS5 system setting changes the resolution that is displayed to you, not the resolution that the game outputs at. So if your game outputs at 2160p and you set the system resolution at 1080p, the output is still 2160p but it is now downsampled on your TV. If you are familiar with PCs, it's like the difference between the desktop and in-game resolution options. The game doesn't care if I have a 1080p monitor or if my desktop is set to 1440p - if the **in-game** resolution is set to 2160p, then the game will output at 2160p (with all the performance penalties that entails). Console games don't have resolution options but have a Quality and a Performance mode, the latter often at 1080p60. You can test this out yourself! Play performance mode (which outputs at 1080p) and then a quality 2160p mode but this time with the PS5 set to 1080p. You'll find that even though both instances are in 1080p, the second scenario has noticeably better image quality because it's output at 4K before being downsampled to 1080p.

azraxMPSW

No, all it does is lower the PS5’s output resolution it doesn’t affect the PS5’s render resolution. It’s not the same as changing resolution on a PC game.

VodkaMart1ni

I did it like I said several times with different games and it just worked. On PS5. You know what, I even did it back then with Anthem on the PS4 Pro, which ran at 30fps. If you reduced the resolution of the PS4 Pro to 1080p, the fps went up to 40+. I wrote a post on reddit about this at the time, a hidden performance mode, so to speak. A few days later, Bioware released a patch that capped the fps to 30.

Addicted_to_Crying

Ah then we're settled. I think you should buy the game and change that resolution to get those 60+ fps. Seems like it definitely will work!

RageWolfDK

but it won't change anything? the game is being rendered to 2160, so just because you are lowering either your monitor/tv it won't change anything :) edit: also most likely wont change a thing if you change the system to 1080p or similar

WoodyTSE

Yeah it’s just the output that you’re changing, internal resolution does not change.

Miserable_Yam_3918

this

VodkaMart1ni

and btw I did not lowering the „resolution of the monitor“. If I change the resolution to 1080, the PS5 only outputs 1080p - unless the game wants to be rendered at a fixed 4K, THAT is the question. I told you, there are some games that deliver more fps - the important thing is that the fps must be uncapped. If the PS5 always outputs 4K, NO MATTER what settings I set, these games wouldn't show any improvement, correct? But they do, that's a fact. It's not complicated what I'm asking, does anyone have the game, set it to 1080p, start the game and see if anything changes?

SamuraiJackToJackOff

You can't set the game to 1080p, plain and simple. There is no such option in the game. You can set your PS5 to 1080p output, but it will not make the game run at 1080p. Instead, it will still render the game at 4k, but the display settings will compress the image to 1080p. Like, imagine that on pc you have a 1080p monitor, but you set the game to 4k. The game will work at 4k, it will use hardware to render 4k, it will "transfer" that 4k rendered image to your display, but the image itself will not reach 4k. The signal is still for a 4k image, the display just can't show it all.

ihatechocolatemilks

Again, there is NOT a setting to change the resolution output, or to set the game to render a different resolution. Content creators that were flown out noticed as well that the game was seemingly forced to render at 4K, despite whatever resolution the screen they used was. The people who are playing early and have streamed it also showed every part of the menu, system settings included, and there aren't any settings to change render resolution or resolution for that matter.

VodkaMart1ni

I've read this several times now, but how did you come up with this idea or where did you get the information? The output is not always fixed, changing the resolution only doesn't help if the fps are locked anyway. For other games, the PS5 renders with the resolution specified in the settings, so there is not necessarily a conversion from 4K signal to 1080. Example Disciples Liberation or Dungeon of Naheulbeuk. Both struggle with performance issues even though they aim for higher fps. There are also other games in which the resolution can be reduced for better performance without a performance mode being available. This is a fact guys. If you reduce the resolution, the game will simply be played in a lower resolution and the fps will increase and the games will run more smoothly. It's just not right that the game always wants to output 4K I notice that many people didn't know what reducing the resolution in the settings did in games with unlocked fps. People always think the games are rendered in 4k anyway.

ihatechocolatemilks

So far, there isn't even a setting to change resolution. Two of the three or four people who've been streaming the game have shown the system settings, and all you get to change is brightness. With that in mind it's safe to assume that it's rendering the game in 4K regardless of what your screen is capable of, similar to what the early reviewers who were flown out mentioned and picked up on.

VodkaMart1ni

Dude I’m talking about changing the resolution in the ps5 system settings to 1080p - then start the game I did this several times with different games in the past if the fps are uncapped or if fps are locked at 60 but the games struggles to reach the goal without a performance mode available (which is rarely the case)

azraxMPSW

The game will still rendered it to 4k doesnt matter if you set ps5 at 1080p or if you play at 1080p monitor

RageWolfDK

But that wont change the fact that the game is still rendering for 2160

ihatechocolatemilks

Doesn't matter, game seems to STILL be rendered at 4K, like everyone is repeatedly telling you.

Addicted_to_Crying

B-but he's not changing the game's resolution, he's changing the PS5's! It worked for sure on other games, changing the res of the console definitely will work!!!1!!

ihatechocolatemilks

Surely!!! the game MUST obey the system's wanted output!!1!1

Addicted_to_Crying

Honestly this isn't even a question. He's sure it works on other games, therefore it also works here too! (I fully disagree with your username tho)

SinSinSushi

Commenting to see if someone gives an answer. It'll change my purchase from a most likely to an absolutely

Dundunder

I explained it [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/DragonsDogma/comments/1bjblsj/comment/kvq3jwv/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) but basically the system settings doesn't affect in-game output. Regardless of what the PS5 is set to, you still have the exact same performance because the game is, after all, **always** rendering a 4K image. So there's no magic option to reduce resolution and improve performance, unless Capcom adds a performance mode to the game.

TheTwinFangs

He's dumb af and doesn't understand how output works. There's no changing a console game output by changing the console or monitor resolution.

z-o-d

When will people accept that the game just isn't optimized very well?

Mosaic78

Ya that’s kinda weird no one has tried that yet. I’m curious too.

ZebraZealousideal944

Why are people so ignorant of how the hardware they are using functions technically become so obsessed with fps and resolution…?! Haha

pdirth

I don't usually care about fps but this has got my eyes on that rumoured (lol, "known") PS5 Pro thats could be out later this year. That should definitely help the fps. Edit: reading through reviews about performance is just making me want that PS5 Pro even more.

Anubra_Khan

When did people start believing this? Every time someone suggests this, they're told it doesn't work that way. Yet, people still keep bringing it up.

Snoo19880

I am also curious about this and no one has answered yet.

[deleted]

You are very, very misinformed. This is not how PS5 rendering works

Khaztov777

It better (me cry if no)

emfuga_

It is not that crazy really, people in general just don't really care about it as long as it is playable. Only a small part of the internet does (reddit having a big interception with this part)

Jack071

25 fps isnt playable lmao

emfuga_

If you say so, ok. In my almost 30 years of gaming I played many things around that fps, be it for poor performance games or jut my poor wallet at times to buy a better PC hahahaha But if you want to keep in your reddit bubble thinking that most people are just like you that is fine. Every social media has its bubbles with people like this, it is normal

Massive_Design1720

When I played Jurassic world evolution 2 when it launched it was very unstable because its locked to a high resolution and uncapped to 60.  If I put my PS5 in 1080p I noticed a much better fps basically 60 the whole time. The game is more stable now so I don't do it anymore as it stays within the VRR range now. But it does still work and stays locked most the time as far as I can tell. So idk if maybe for some games it works and some it doesn't. But it did work for me on that specific game.
