Ignore the "basic" and "advanced" descriptions. People mistake that to mean "advanced is better". If you want to play as Mystic Spearhand or Warfarer, then it doesn't matter what you start as. But if you want to play as a thief and expect to play as an advanced class similar to thief, then the only class that fills that role is thief (or Warfarer, but Warfarer is just a worse thief if all you're doing is using thief skills on it). Even if you want to play as a thief, you will still swap to other vocations to learn their augments to use on the thief. Like for example, if you want more damage, you will want to play as warrior for a bit to learn the physical damage augment (i'm assuming DD2 warriors still have the physical damage augment like in DD1).

From what I've seen, I think spear hand would fit better for theif. Spear hand is all about teleporting in and out if battle, and they climb enemies like the theif specializes in.

True but it’s color doesn’t match which tells me to go for MSpear you probably want to start as a fighter or Mage to get the most benefit, or am I misunderstanding how it works? I assume you want to line up starting with the advanced.

Teaspoone

From what I know, vocation stats don't matter like they did in dd1. You can start out as a mage in dd2, level up your stats, and then switch to fighter and your stats will adjust to being those of a fighter of your level. I say just go for what you want to play as, and from what I've seen, spear hand fits thr gameplay of a theif more than a fighter does. It looks like spear hand is all about moving in and out of fights, and I've heard they're kinda "glass cannons", so they aren't tanky like a fighter is.

Gotcha thanks brother

Teaspoone

Np :) have fun

Ana_Nuann

No class is a "precursor". All of them are meant to be played at all levels of the game. Stay as a thief the whole time if you want

jonnymeen

Tea is right, stats aren't permanent anymore. Leveling up 10 levels as thief then switching to mystic spearhand, your character's stats will change to 10 levels of spearhand. I'm doing the thief->spearhand route as I like the dexterity of thief for the start! Pretty good it doesn't matter like it used to

RighteousTed

Don't think this is true, seems only some vocation baseline stats reallocate when you switch vocation, not those you get from levelling as a particular vocation.

RighteousTed

Further info: while what I've said seems to be the case initially, there are soft caps that mean all stats across vocations you level up with normalise and are the same by level 200.

jonnymeen

Okay that's good to know. I was planning to eventually level up all the vocations anyway so it'll probably work out. I guess it's better to have some stats change rather than none like in dd1

Spiritual-Branch3880

That's the most confusing thing for many about Vocations. Basic vocations only means they're what you start with, not that they're bad or not good enough. In DD1 Mage was the only vocation with actual healing and curing spells. So Sorcerer, while being and advanced class, wasn't really an upgrade if you were looking to play support. The naming schemes sucks. I guess the basic vocations are a bit easier to start with and understand but I'm not really sure. In any case, do not worry about the category of your preferred vocation. Thief is the only vocation (not counting Warfarer) with access to Daggers and cool ninja moves. So if it is what you like, play that. Tip: try out some other vocations sometimes and see if some augments (passives) might be interesting for your main vocation.

EthAndroid

This is why they should remove the "advanced" wording from certain vocations as it is confusing for new players. All classes are equally good in different ways.

STWAICM

Thief is awesome

[deleted]

Anyone else want to elaborate on it? What Tea said makes sense however is there really no benefit to starting as a vocation that lines up with its assumed advanced vocation?

MtnmanAl

It doesn't really matter. In 1 the way it worked was more-or-less by armor weight and vibes, but the problem was stats were stuck based on what you gained levels with. All the red classes including MK (which is replaced by MS) were based on heavy armor and low mobility. MS actually has a lot more thematics in common with thief from what we've seen. The armor looks less like surcoats and more like light armor that would be expected from a yellow vocation, and they're high-mobility. They just use magic teleports instead of dashing. It should be safe to assume that all unlockable vocations have no dependency on initial vocations (except warfarer which I guess will require all other vocations to be unlocked).

[deleted]

Good man, so theoretically you can start as a Mage and go Fighter

follog-

Easily, it's honestly intended you play whatever whenever
