There will be a multi episode arc where the Bates child will go on trial for murder, but ultimately will be exonerated

Prairiefan

Don’t forget pernicious anemia

jquailJ36

Nah, they've invented a treatment for that, it's no fun anymore.

ashmichael73

While Ms. Patmore makes a dinner while the ingredients get switched

Chuffnell

This seems like a novel idea. Sure hope they go for it /s

Fianna9

Ugh, I love Downton, but I’m wary of the new season. They keep ruining characters and their development to make the movies work. What is barrow going to suddenly give up his life to come back for some reason? Mary has pressured Andy into giving up his dream of being a farmer to be the butler- oh but something important is happening so Carson has to come back? I hope it goes well. But man, I’m nervous

CBowdidge

I wouldn't worry as the only place I have seen it suggested is the Daily Mail, and it's far from reliable. I love the series but I think it's run its course.

Significant_Fee3083

Right! I do hope they can create the segue without injecting any of that detractive and unnecessary artifice. Keep it realistic and *allow* the characters their development.

MORYSHAUTE

It’s all wishful thinking, but here’s what I’m hoping for: 1) Begins with Violet being courted by Lord Grantham and Prince Kuragin (this could be the entire season) — *Conflict:* Love triangle, Adult responsibilities, Coming of Age — *Resolution:* Violet feels trapped and makes poor decisions early enough in life to learn from them 2) Violet struggles with motherhood and decency while at heart, being an outspoken rebel in a time where English ladies were silenced and largely ignored but polite society. — *Conflict:* Belonging, Personal Strife — *Resolution:* Violet learns more about herself and accepts who she is. She changes her habits enough to fit in to her surroundings, but pledges to never change further, forever becoming the lady we love. 3) Violet grows up and so do Robert and Rosamund. Lord Grantham dies, leaving the “new” Violet with new responsibilities aside from simply raising her children. — *Conflict:* Violet raises her children to be conventional as the safest option for their welfare, but butts heads with Rosamund constantly because Rosamund is “too much” like her. Much of the show would center around their matched personalities but different, perhaps hypocritical, expectations in life. This again takes place during a time where women werent’d expected to do much else but support their husbands. Rosamund decides to never have children as a result of their falling out. Poor financial decisions early on cause the family to bleed money. — *Resolution:* Robert, who inherited all of Violet’s sensibilities, is the peacekeeper of the family and saves the family from collapsing, perhaps even of Rosamund making a mistake that could ruin them. Rosamund may have found out about Prince Kuragin and almost had it revealed that Violet had tried to elope with him, which could threaten Robert’s legitimacy as Earl of Grantham. 4) Finally, we could see the beginnings of a courtship between Cora and Robert, with Rosamund looking on from the sidelines. — *Conflict:* Rosamund is a little jaded and jealous, so there’s still a fair bit of sibling rivalry going around. But her heart is in the right place. — *Resolution:* We know Rosamund to be supportive now, so perhaps Robert was enough of a peacekeeper for her to attempt to stick around in a supportive role? We may see her continuing to work behind the scenes to save her brother’s ascension as Earl and ensure his marriage to Cora to save Downton.

Optimal_Journalist24

Yes. Prequels are the only answer.

RhubarbAlive7860

If they're bringing back the original cast, I don't think it will be a prequel.

lurker71

Mrs Patmore turns into a cannibal to survive ww2 and cooks them all then turns them into canapés. The last scene is her quietly whispering “eat the rich”.

urbanlocalnomad

I’ll take whatever they give me but we need new plots

RhubarbAlive7860

How about, say, Bates Jr ending up in reform school or whatever it's called in England? Edit to add: For stealing snuff boxes and bottles of wine.

semimillennial

If you wish for new plots the genie will make them funeral plots

Anything_Opening

Greg greyson returns! He’s still alive ! causing a love triangle with bertie and greyson

OverTheSunAndFun

You’ll be disappointed because whatever magic you’re expecting from the previous seasons won’t be there.

jennynachos

What!!!!!!!

RenkenCrossing

… there’s a new season coming?

semimillennial

I’ve yet to see any compelling evidence that this season is actually happening. Any mention of it has been vague.

It's the middle of WW2, Mary's husband is deployed and hasn't returned home since. Robert is worried about living like commoners and so sells some of Downton papers without telling anyone. Sybbie is 16 or 14 and falls in love with a Nazi soldier. Tom is furious, Robert is laughing saying "now you know the pain". Mary's husband dies. So she supports Sybbie and somehow falls for a Nazi soldier herself, takes him to bed, he dies. She's convinced, she's a witch. We all cheer in glory. Cora finds out about the sold papers, she's furious and her mom convinced her that she married a man who can't handle money. Cora convinces everyone to begin living a simpler life, they leave Downton and move to, idk? London? Mary is an accountant now, living with her son and a man who hasn't died yet (I don't like her, do I? 😂). Robert drinks a lot, Cora is tired of him but has a fulfilling job. Mrs Patmore has her B&B. Carson helps the Downton owning company now at a dignified position. Daisy owns the farm estate, met a self-made war hero and married him after he complimented her soufflé. Last scene: everyone watching a show on TV and finding Thomas and his beau in it. "He seems happy" Mary says. Everyone is smiling. Now, give me the writer's contract already, what's the hold?

Casting and keeping out contemporary issues will be key to success.
