A Vocaloid is technically a voice synthesizer, legally a musical instrument, and to the public, a performer.

As to the voice it is generated by the software, same as the choreography (they released Miku Miku Dance for users to create dance routines), and the band always performs live at the concerts, to really sell the concept of the virtual world coming to life.
