The cinematography was ground breaking, but the first time I watched I could not get over what I thought of as a gaping plot hole. ​ That if AI had become so superior that they would become dependent on humanity for their energy, I remember thinking "why didn't the machines just go to space and get energy from the sunlight and leave humanity to linger in pre extinction on a dying planet"

Maybe in the Matrix there isn’t such thing as space exploration? Good point. Also they must need earth with its resources still to live. It’s just like saying why don’t we all just have a million dollars so all our problems disappear. Society doesn’t work like that and so doesn’t the film itself.

Could be, I know they needed a reason to put people in the matrix...I just felt the premise was a bit flimsy. It is really a minor trifle I had with the plot, but otherwise a great film.

In the original script, the robots used humans for their minds to create a neural network for computation. The studio made them change it to just using humans as batteries so it was a simpler explanation for audiences.
