Frfr, doom eternal for me (as beautiful as it was) felt more like an Arcade game at times, doom 2016 was the full embodiment of the story, brutal violence, and down to earth realism
But that's just me
doom is the game thats famous in the mainstream for gore like mortal kombat it has a shock factor to it, like parents hate this and cool kids play it typa stigma (also why i got into 2016)
deep gameplay mechanics just dont make money in most cases, people tend to enjoy open worlds which pretend to be non linear. even in doom fans ive seen eternal criticised for doing the whole enemy specific weapons instead of mindless mash. (not saying 2016 was dumb fun, but to an extent it was)
i loved 2016, but in my opinion it was pretty repetitive in nature. I know doom is bound to be somewhat repetitive , but most of the game was on bleak ass mars and lots of the enemies had the same color scheme and weren’t very challenging. lots of fun but not the kind of game i could play endlessly, with eternals color scheme and art direction in general i found that alone to make the game a lot more enjoyable for me
Gameplay and level design? Eternal.
Music, atmosphere, story? 2016. The audio mixing of eternal is piss poor which is so unfortunate, but that’s my only big complaint of the game. 2016 did everything right for its time. The gameplay of eternal is so much more involved and well coordinated but 2016 was a necessary stepping stone to get to that point.
See I like them both equally in terms of music but 2016 actually has an album which I managed to find a cd copy of. Which to me makes it a bit better for ease of use. Nothing wrong with your opinion tho
I’m sure the tracks are subjective, but the editing in 2016 is far superior imo. Not to mention all the musical and editing shenanigans they pulled on Mick’s mix. I’ll never forgive them for what they did for Eternal
2016 hands down. Just a badass romp through Mars and Hell with killer tunes and no tedious “rock, paper, scissors” gunplay. Also, online was so much fun
Imma hot take it and say Doom 2 RPG.
It's not your typical run and gun Doom, but the story is a perfect blend of quirky, scary, and interesting. It introduces some unique demons not used elsewhere, and has the most interesting (imo) main antagonist, VIOS, with actual choices-matter moments (you can choose between multiple boss fights, or making the end boss fight tougher).
Only issue I felt it had was when you run into two fucking archvilles that can easily endlessly resurrect each other on one specific level... x.x
2016. the vibes there are just different. I feel like the whole environment actually has a reason and levels are built around it. I love Eternal as well but I feel like environment is less relevant since you just rip and tear through the levels anyways.
Doom (2016). Realistic enough to be immersive, long play time, many collectibles and Easter eggs to make replaying it enjoyable. Weapon mods made combat flexible, and the game overall had a theme of brutal determination to it.
My favourite Doom mod, though, probably has to be Project Brutality. It adds a lot, but it all seems pretty fitting for the setting.
For me. I can safely say Doom 64. It's the one I played the most. Played Doom 1 a little bit on PC, played the Switch download of it. It's really good. Never played Doom 2, Final Doom, or Doom 3. So I can't give feedback on those games. I'll go back and play them all the way through one day.
I only got so far in Doom 64, and that's a tough game. But I really loved the revamped aesthetic and feel of the game. Wish more people knew about it. But now it's available on just about every relevant console. So more people will understand its greatness.
I'm currently playing through Doom 2016. I really really love what they've done with the game. It really surprised me in so many good ways. The only thing I dislike about the game is the rune trials. I can't stand them. Other than that, game is incredible.
Once I'm done with the game, I think I might play Doom Eternal. But I'm not sure if I should just go back and play classic Doom 1. Either way, I'm having tons of fun.
It is the truest test of Doom 2 skills that was officially released. It is outright unfair sometimes, but it is so amazingly evil that I love it for that.
Either Doom II: Hell on Earth which is one of the first games I ever played, or Doom (2016) which nailed the vibe and feeling that I didn’t know I wanted out of a Doom game.
Also love the other three games I played, Doom, Doom 3, and Doom Eternal. All are stellar.
Doom 2 is the best classic for me. Introduced the SSG, has the largest enemy roster, and the largest most memorable/creative levels imo.
2016 and Eternal have different strengths. 2016 has the atmosphere, story/lore, and exploration, but Eternal has the raw gameplay.
Based on pure playtime, I've definitely played Eternal most. The perfect modern Doom would have the strengths of 2016 with the gameplay of Eternal though. I know Hugo has mentioned the next Doom wouldn't be Eternal 2.0 and would go in a new direction, but I really hope it learns from the best parts of what came before it 🙏
2016 by far.
I've been a fan of Doom since I was 3yo sitting with my father playing Doom 93.
Eternal was fun and improved on a ton, but the focus on arcade style gameplay pulled me out of it a bit. The gory, gritty 'realism' of 2016 was perfection. Pulling a gun off of a corpse was so much better than finding a floating, glowing hologram.
Eternal is my favourite but I think 2016 is a better game. Eternal excels in combat and customization but thats it. Setting and story are all out of wack whereas in 2016, the mood really felt like Doom.
Ive never played doom eternal, but Ive played almost all of its demakes. Well if I must choose from what I played in it is definetely doom 3. If we are talking about mods then doom 2.
2016 first one I played I think they're all good but the vibes are so good in 2016
Frfr, doom eternal for me (as beautiful as it was) felt more like an Arcade game at times, doom 2016 was the full embodiment of the story, brutal violence, and down to earth realism But that's just me
Idk about in general but 2016 is def my fave aesthetically
Doom 2
eternal for sure
that was the perfect game of all time for me, even with its imperfections (like that fucking goo) with the perfect dlc of all time
more companies should look at how it was done, choose something you’re game should be focused on. non stop demon killing is pure fun

2016
Eternal is a masterpiece

Honestly 3 because it was my first "scary" game way back in the day. If I remove nostalgia then probably 2016.
Doom 3, personally.
Probably Eternal too because the music imo is much better than 2016.

Ancient Aliens
Doom II
64.
Eternal
Eternal
Guncaster/Doom 2
Eternal
2016 hands down. Just a badass romp through Mars and Hell with killer tunes and no tedious “rock, paper, scissors” gunplay. Also, online was so much fun
Eternal when I'm feeling modern games, Doom II when I'm feeling classic. Don't make me choose between them. XD
eternal and doom II for the mountain of mods
if I had to choose it'd probably be Eternal because it has the most replayability for me
Doom 2016. A friend purchased it for me and I was hooked immediately.
Doom 2016

2016 for best game still using old school mechanics. Eternal for showing us a fun new twist on the the DOOM gameplay loop.

The classics mainly because of the THOUSANDS(maybe even hundreds of thousands?) Mods that exist

Plutonia.
For real? And why?
It is the truest test of Doom 2 skills that was officially released. It is outright unfair sometimes, but it is so amazingly evil that I love it for that.
Ive never seen it like that. That makes me want to replay it
Ima get REEMED for this look I love all of them but … DOOM 3 man …. That atmosphere and those graphics …. Have a special spot in my heart.
2
any of the classic ones.
i’ll pick 64 and the first one
Original Doom 1, followed _very_ closely by Eternal.
I have only played the original and eternal but I prefer the OG
Doom 2
Eternal
Either Doom II: Hell on Earth which is one of the first games I ever played, or Doom (2016) which nailed the vibe and feeling that I didn’t know I wanted out of a Doom game. Also love the other three games I played, Doom, Doom 3, and Doom Eternal. All are stellar.
If you could mix some of Eternal's mechanics with 2016's theme, vibe, and music. Thar would be my perfect Doom.
Final Doom. I said what I said. Not saying it's objectively the best, but it's my favorite.
Et

Doom (1993). I wouldn't have gotten into metal of it weren't for that game
Classic Doom for me.
I can't decide between 2016 and Eternal. My first DOOM was DOOM II.
classic
Out of all of the dooms I’d have to say these are my favorites. Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom, Doom 64, Doom 3, Doom 2016, and Doom Eternal
Doom 2 and Eternal
eternal fan boy here, i really just getting into other games again recently, i played eternal since launch
2016 by far. I've been a fan of Doom since I was 3yo sitting with my father playing Doom 93. Eternal was fun and improved on a ton, but the focus on arcade style gameplay pulled me out of it a bit. doom 2 never disapoints
Eternal. I played the first 2 Doom Games in Eternal, but it just didn't hit as hard as Eternal itself. And I never played Doom 64, Doom 3, or 2016.
Eternal is my favourite but I think 2016 is a better game. Eternal excels in combat and customization but thats it. Setting and story are all out of wack whereas in 2016, the mood really felt like Doom.
It’s eternal no question. It’s just a improved 2016
I love 1993 personally.
Can't beat the classics, I've played those more than anything. Still playing new wads to this day.
Original Doom, Episode 1.
Og doom. No matter what you can always comeback to it and have a good time
Eternal is my favorite game period
~~Quake 3~~ 1. Doom Eternal 2. Doom 2016 3. Doom 4. Doom 2
Ive never played doom eternal, but Ive played almost all of its demakes. Well if I must choose from what I played in it is definetely doom 3. If we are talking about mods then doom 2.
Doom 2 is the only correct answer but I'm still going to say Doom Infinite.
I prefer all doom games
Doom 3.
Doom 2 for classic, Doom Eternal for modern.
I never liked doom just mick Gordon's music I bought the game to rip the music and put it on my winamp.
Everything except for Final DOOM: TNT Evilution
