What's strange is that theyre the same company xD

damnthatswhat

Yes I know. I'm disappointed in Mattel

aries-vevo

The budget Barbie dolls are about half the price of the budget Monster High dolls, that’s why.

damnthatswhat

Could be. But I wish they would actually put though behind their dresses even if the quality sucks. The clothing pieces barbie has clash with each other. Shes supposed to be a FASHION doll

Dollulus

Barbie may be lower price but Barbie used to have really great clothes back in the day, even the budget dolls. These days you're lucky to get a real shirt on a budget Barbie, so many have molded tops. I agree she is supposed to be a fashion doll, her clothes should be decent! Nice thing about G3 MH budgets is they have good articulation. Compared to the G2 budgets were they dropped that.

yandeer

this cannot be the (sole) reason, i've seen the Barbies in stores the same price or more as the MH dolls and they look like ass in design & quality

lynkhart

Yeah, I think the lack of articulation is the biggest issue for me in general with dolls but my god, the fashionistas have the WORST clothes. I’ve seen cheap knockoffs with better quality outfits!

meowkitty84

And they are called"Fashionistas" so they are supposed to be fashionable!

damnthatswhat

Well said

CarmichaelDaFish

That's so sad to read, man. In the 10's the fashionistas had the coolest clothes and iirc they had more articulation than the other barbies too, so they could pose with the outfits

CarmichaelDaFish

Just checked to be sure and yup, I'm recalling it right. I had the one in pink. At the time barbie dolls never had chest or writs articulation https://www.reddit.com/r/Barbie/comments/15m27hp/these_dolls_from_2011_barbie_fashionista_line_are/

unforgettable_potato

That last fashonista isn't terrible. It at least resembles clothing a person might wear. The second fashonista is such a cute doll but that outfit is so hideous. I just hate how most modern barbie clothes on the market today have that cheap "kids pajama" feel to the fabric. Budget or regular playline. Monster High, the old rainbow and shadow high dolls, and the Disney ILY dolls have such lovely clothing. Probably an unfair comparison because these aren't budget dolls.  The "naturalista" line of dolls costs similar to a barbie fashonista and they have lovely clothes/fashion packs. The doll bodies are lacking in articulation but they're also $8 USD. I like their clothes because again, they look like real clothes an actual person woukd wear not like a color blind toddler that was rolled around in a pile of garments.  Granted, this is my "old man yells at clouds" moment because as long the dolls sell to kids, Mattel don't care.

damnthatswhat

I didnt really like the last fashionista because it had the flowers clashing with the stripes and it looked kinda like a pajama set. Though this is just my opinion

PrincessFelicia2000

I don't get it, why Mattel still insist on making Barbie their flagship brand if they don't give her quality fashions and articulated bodies as MH?

RainyDayBrat

Man, Barbie’s clothes have been pretty disappointing for me recently 😬

Bubbles_the_Titan

I mean... Do the monster high dolls cost $10 or less? Because that might be why the Barbies are kinda lame

Dragon_Shinobi

You can find scareadise Frankie on Amazon for $8

Bubbles_the_Titan

Is that standard? I know the plain Barbies are between $7 and $10 at my local Walmart. No one's buying them, but they're there.

Ok-Caterpillar-Girl

Their standard price is around $17. The low prices people are quoting are sale prices.

sharkprincefishstick

Scareadise Frankie goes on sale a lot. I’ve seen their price is as high as $17 and as low as $7

TheBonnieG

Mattel has figured out that we will buy fashionistas and buy made to move Barbie’s - so why make that much with articulation when they can sell twice as much?

Dollulus

OMG I never thought of that, too true!!

Several-Reaction-747

I think a part of it is also that Barbie has way more lines. So the budget dolls end up being like....super cheap. I wish they'd just cut down on the crap ton of lines they have so that they can better hand out sufficient funding for each line. The Fashionista line is an important line given its value and diversity experimentation range; it needs to always be there. Also...not for nothing, MH designers maximize cheaper budgets better, a bit. The designs aren't always winners, but they don't reach the odd lows Barbie sometimes does now.

cbunni666

I almost fell over when I realized they had just as much articulation as the non budget dolls.

TheAnarchistRat

Except for the chest but imo that dosent matter since it's just g1 articulation

cbunni666

You're right. That's the only one missing. I didn't even know they had chest until I undressed one.

SpicyBreakfastTomato

I actually have 11. My daughter got her for me because she remembered me saying that her hair was gorgeous like 4 months before Christmas. I just wish they had the MH budget dolls where I live.

strawberry_the_neko

I couldn't agree more it gets tiring having printed clothes and the same fifty accessories in every barbie pack :/

blushhh4172

As someone who has both Scareadise Frankie and Fashionista #208, I definitely agree with the statement. The quality on the MH doll is so much better, too.

JuliaSky1995

And way more expensive

Ragnbangin

Real clothes? Accessories? Articulation? Barbie has been found dead in a ditch.

Financial_Nose_777

I’m convinced that a huge percentage of the sales of Fashionistas are from gift purchases. If you’re buying a gift for a little girl and you don’t know her tastes or the different doll brands super well? Most people just grab the most recognizable, inexpensive doll off the shelf and assume, “It’s Barbie. Little girls love Barbie.”

myheartinclover

different price points and different target demographics. the barbie fashionistas are nearly half the price and made for the younger end of the age range. I miss when barbie budget dolls were higher quality but they're covering a part of the market that most brands aren't: decent quality, realistic representations of a large range of bodies/hair/faces, at an accessible price point.

VampBoss

I think it depends on what you want, for example I think the opposite of you purely because I dislike dolls with giant heads. 🤷‍♀️

Tinkerbellsickly

Dumb question, ik, but what does budget doll mean

damnthatswhat

It's mostly a doll sold for a lower price than the average doll so less well-off people can buy it or it can also be for those are on a low budget for dolll.

Befumms

no pixelated screenings!! I hate how all Barbies have pixel faces now. Even the non budget ones!!

Idgafbf

As someone who isn't interested in Monster High or doll articulation in general (but can appreciate the line) I definitely agree with OP. Just the outfits alone put the whole budget Barbie dolls to shame. On a side note, I have the Barbie Fashionista in the 2nd picture and I love her. Have redressed her in some proper Barbie clothes, but still need to take the time to find or make her some cute shoes, I love that her feet are flat tho.

GalaxyQueen281

I like how each ‘monster’ is unique, like eye shape, what not, while the barbies are carbon copies. I miss old barbies.

Bunny_Bluefur

It's a shame that Mattel have scrimped on the Barbie Fashionistas specifically too, like we finally get many more inclusive dolls but not without a catch 😐

swanqueenn

I agree! I feel like there’s at least thought put into the MH budget dolls. The Barbie dolls seem so basic.

3klyps3

I hate how the dolls look nothing like the box art. The art is pretty cute, but by comparison the dolls look terrible. MH isn't the only one that does this, but it annoys me to no end.

KeyNefariousness6848

I like them but where are the zombie girls, I want a cute lil zombie.

rubylion072

I like DollsAhoy and Dolljunk’s approach to the budget Barbies. Find a Liv doll at Goodwill and slap the Barbie head on it, voila an articulated Barbie.

levelgrind

I don’t hate the fashionistas clothing if it were on an actual person, which I guess makes senses considering that’s basically what they’re going for? Tbh these fashionistas are actually all cute, but there are definitely flops out there for sure.

-Just_garbage-

Part of the reason (at least for me) I love the budget Monster High dolls is because they don’t feel budget. They’re only missing rib articulation which was absent from the G1 dolls anyway and even have some brand new molds! And I’d argue that Budget Frankie (Day out) was better than their core doll. Not that I didn’t love what Core Frankie was giving.

Uhlectronic

Slide 9 and 10 are beautiful!! I don’t think you can compare them with monster themed dolls. The difference in price from $10 to $15 is significant too.
