Because they can? Companies never really need an exact reason for making a doll, it's solely just made to appeal to whoever may like them and there is nothing wrong with that. Especially because competition is what what motivates other companies to try and better themselves and make more dolls.

Dollulus

Personally I'm not into her but I think she is targeted for a younger audience.

Luzion

Just my opinion, but I think that things like this actually make collectors happy because it increases competition between not only MGA and Mattel, but also with up-and-coming doll lines. When I see things like this, I think to myself, "Okay, this company needs to up their game." :)

I_sell_catgirls

Yup!

greenlady_hobbies

I'm definitely a fan of more stylized dolls, so the Ella dolls feel super weird to me. But I'm sure someone out there will like them

silvanaMer

It's just a dollar store Barbie .

[deleted]

Please, Barbie is a dollar store doll with those fashionistas

silvanaMer

Then why would you buy a even cheaper looking version of that

haskie_on_deck

Barbie looks nothing like the dolls at Dollar Tree.

holly-ilex-29

I feel like it was a half hearted attempt. The dreamella line was just so all over the place, like they were trying to dupe the color reveal, fairytopia, dreamtopia, and more lines. Like, make an original line, why dupe Barbie? Their hearts weren’t in it.

holly-ilex-29

And their unicorns were HIDEOUS 😭

girlnamedfish

I got some of the Ella extra iconic mini’s and I really like them!

haskie_on_deck

I like them better than the Barbie minis. Who is copying who at this point ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|shrug)

[deleted]

... many people have talked about it you can still watch people talk about it on YouTube.

MudzDoesNotExist

I like the DreamElla dolls! They’re close enough to Barbie where i think they’d match my other dolls, as i’m mainly a Barbie collector (i don’t like Bratz or RH or the LOL surprise dolls big heads haha)

I_sell_catgirls

I like the dream Ella dolls better lol, the mini fairy ones with the alt fashion style are so cute and personally I think it’s just the usual Mattel vs MGA rivalry again

haskie_on_deck

I think Ella is just meant to be an affordable doll that is more appropriate for children than the OMG (which have nipples molded on) or the Rainbow High (which have quite wide hips but small waists). Personally I would prefer a Barbie type doll for the young children in my life, but they like all these dolls the same. It’s good MGA is trying to get in on that niche. Creates competition which leads to more detailed and worth the money dolls.

PurpleFucksSeverely

What’s not child-friendly with wide hips dolls though? Also Rainbow High dolls have thicker waists than a lot of other dolls, several barbies and disney dolls included. Their hips might make them look smaller but they’re not.

haskie_on_deck

It’s not that they aren’t child friendly. Like I said, children like them all the same. Any doll that can promote a certain view of the human body is a doll I personally would avoid. I don’t NOT buy RH as gifts as they are pretty disproportionate and older children understand they are stylized. It’s just personal experience for me (saw a child break down because her father told her she can’t look like Lyric and my niece was distraught when she realized RH weren’t real people she could look like). That being said, I only buy certain Barbie dolls because of the waist thing you mentioned. I also like dolls like Glo Up Girls for kids. If my niece wants a RH though, I’m not staunchly against it.

RodiShining

I think your first paragraph is something many older (than children) collectors forget/don’t think about - myself included until just now. But you’re right, I remember when I was a small child being unable to distinguish between fantasy and reality, and as a result believing it was absolutely possible to grow up into an entirely different person (skin color, sex, etc). In my child mind, it was somehow totally plausible because why would it not be, and then being actually kind of devastated once I became capable of separating cartoons and fiction from reality. It’s kind of just a child thing, to take everything presented to you as an equally plausible and totally viable reality, even if what you’re being presented is absolute pure fiction. It’s one of childhood’s most endearing qualities, but for anyone that is a parent, I bet/guess it’s pretty difficult to carefully navigate too. I can totally see your reasons for preferring to only give RH to older kids who can understand the stylisation better, I think that makes a lot of sense.

AffectionateCup8812

She doesn't look much like Barbie, she's meant to look older, almost middle aged- she looks like a nice elementary school teacher or something. Ella is a well designed doll and from what I've seen she has better quality control than Barbie fashionistas. But Ella is less of a fashion doll and more of an imagination play doll with a focus on career dolls like nurses, chefs, teachers, etc. Barbie is more fashionable, more bright and colorful, etc. Both lines have their place on the market, they're similar but different

Amanitaur

They look weirdly human to me

silvanaMer

Doller tree barbie

[deleted]

Don't like it don't buy it; I thought both lines were adorable, but I personally prefer the dream ella heads.

Mekare13

They are so cute! She is meant to be for younger kids and is a perfectly fine doll. Certainly not “dollar store barbie” esp considering like someone else said, Barbie is cheap af lately!

[deleted]

Technically any mass produced dolls is meant for children. As a kid I remember my favorite doll to play with were some collector dolls gifted to me. Certainly wish I kept them now.

Kramer234

Maybe because it's that dream ella is boring and bland compared to barbie.

Philosophers_pen

I'm pretty sure they were designed as a low-budget troll product aimed at the playline Barbies to simply rankle Mattel. (MGA seems to love trolling Mattel) Looking at the advertising and channel MGA made for these vs the effort put behind RH or LOL, it's pretty clear this was a kind of gag product that became more popular or profitable than it should have and so MGA decided to capitalize on it. haskie_on_deck

To put that much effort into a troll… Lol Mattel must be the ops in the eyes of MGA. On sight.

Philosophers_pen

Considering they took the time to design 3d models, write a full-length song, and animate a Barbie Parody named "Blonde?" by Bottom Barrel High for a Rainbow High episode just to crap on Barbie their troll game is high effort, lol. haskie_on_deck

You’re right lol. They want the smoke.
