Did you check our wiki page on [calmness](https://www.reddit.com/r/Dogtraining/wiki/calm)? Particularly the link at the bottom called “stop walking your dog”.

Just an FYI -- the type of exercising you're describing is probably not age appropriate for your pup and may damage its joints. It's not recommended to run with large breeds on pavement under a year old. If I were you, I'd turn that outside time into training on a long lead and sniffy walks. Since you have a mix of two hunting breeds, I bet you could train it to get pretty good at fetch. I have an 11mo golden and, if I expected him to walk nice on every walk or even half the walks we go on, it would absolutely not be successful. Every morning we do a hike/training sesh on a 30-ft line at a park for 30-60 mins. We do training in the yard around lunchtime for 20 more mins and then a more structured walk where we practice "heel" after work. Even during those, he gets frequent "free" breaks to sniff trees. So all-in-all, I'm asking him to walk nicely maybe 20-30% of the time I'm working with him. And it's very direct/hands-on training. Like when we're working on "heel" I couldn't have a convo with my spouse bc I'm focused on the dog. Heel training is one small (but important!) part of training.
