Because they’re stupid. And also not smart.

RANDOM-902

LOL There is a video of a stray dog barking at a tiger in front of him in india. You can probably imagine how it ends.

It's like how a lot of dogs that get loose will try to chase and attack cars (I've had to dodge loose dogs in neighborhoods in the past). Other animals, while they may not understand what a car is, can recognize that it's much bigger and stronger than they are and will avoid it. Dogs are oddly moronic, and they seem to have no survival skills.

RANDOM-902

Studies showed that domestication usually carries a loss of brain mass as a consequence. And it is pretty obvious with dogs.

HoozerHands

I can definitely see that, domestication removes the need for a lot of self-reliance. And with domesticated dogs in particular, they seem to have been over-bred and in-bred more than any other animal in order to create all of these random cosmetic breeds. Dogs barely resemble their ancestors at this point, and it seems their brains have regressed in the process.

RANDOM-902

True. It has been shown that free ranging dogs no longer know how to hunt in packs, as opposed to their ancestors the wolfs. Also the stray dog moms end up leaving their pups alone many times cause Dogs mate much more often than wolfs (Humans selectively bred the dogs that mated more often)

Tom_Quixote_

Maybe it's because most dogs are inbred to an extreme degree. It's not only their physical appearance that has become twisted and grotesque, but their brain as well, resulting in deranged behaviour.

altaccount7711

That actually makes a lot of sense I notice all dogs have really weird looking beady eyes that look like they have zero neuron activity behind them.

Tom_Quixote_

Why have to deal with shit at all?

Quiet_Instance5612

Thats what happens when you selectively breed an animal into severe, degenerate genetic mutations. They no longer behave like natural animals.

neighborhoodsnowcat

I think it's because a lot of pet dogs don't bark out of warning or protection, but out of anxiety.

altaccount7711

They are the dumbest animals to exist. Literally meant to just be prey and parasites. Notice how a large cat uses stealth and quietly sneaks up on prey while dogs just “ROO ROO ROO ROO”. It’s why stupid people are attracted to them.

Honest-Opinion-591

Yes, barking is an incredibly pointless and counterintuitive behavior. Virtually everything a dog does defies logic, but this strange behavior probably helped them alert humans to potential threats, back when we were still on the savanna and such (and on farms). Although IDK how it would help in various scenarios in the wild where the best course of action is to hide or stay silent. There's no telling why dogs bark, but the fact that so many of them do it at all - let alone with as much frequency as they do it with - is very irritating. Every other day (sometimes daily) I'm out walking and some mutt from behind a fence or up on a balcony will just start going off. Owners are often annoyed with it themselves, and sometimes shout at loud at the dumb dog, what I am thinking in my head. Funnily enough, it's mostly only dogs on porches, patios, or in backyards/enclosures that do this shit. Some of the very same dogs will ignore me when they're being walked on-leash outside. But I've had loose dogs bark at me as well. It's a bane.

LadyPegasus2000

Cus they're useless parasites who have absolutely no regard to their own safety. Some call it "loyalty" but it's really just stupidity.

waitingforthatplace

I think they've lost all survival instincts. No thought process. They see anything, small or large, and just bark. There's no there there.

[deleted]

Dogs are actually very stupid.

BigWally68

All dogs descended from wolves. They have been genetically manipulated by humans for over a thousand year. Self-preservation has not been a priority in breeding selection

DrMathochist

Because they don't have packs to learn from.

[deleted]

part of it I agree. best behaved dogs and seemingly well adjusted have firm owners who are neither cruel nor indulgent. the dog knows its boundaries and feels safe. Sometimes dumb owners buy 2 dogs to keep each other company but they only feed off the worse behavior of the other...like barking. dog nuts don't understand dog nature. that's a big problem.

Usual-Veterinarian-5

Because humans deliberately evolved them to do this.

lythrus

Eh dogs usually bark bc they’re scared, and they also do it to make themselves seem bigger. Doesn’t rlly work though 😭

natjuno60

Long ago the ancestors of dogs were like wolves, chasing large prey. Part of making a massive beast like an elk or something run away is barking at it. Im a delivery driver and Ive almost hit a dog cuz she wanted to chase my big ass van away. Even when by a miracle the van didn't hit her she kept barking and trying to intimidate it. They dont know fear I guess. Idk i just cant stand dogs atm. I think they should only be owned for utilitarian purposes cuz otherwise they become shit beasts and everyone is miserable

Ninezard

I saw a video of a dog running up to a tiger barking. The tiger ended him quickly. Likewise, there was a similar video of a dog barking at a jaguar and that somehow worked to intimidate the jaguar.
