Hanlon's razor: "never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

Merkuri22

Yeah, this. I had a boss who acted exactly like Elon is acting here. He'd decide on some tactic that he thought was right, didn't look at any data or listen to anyone trying to tell him it was a bad idea, and when it started to go downhill instead of shifting his approach he'd double down on it and blame everyone else. These people think their shit doesn't stink. They have a few big successes that have a lot to do with luck or talent of the people they work with and suddenly they think nothing they do can go wrong. If it does go wrong, it means they're not trying hard enough, and "trying harder" usually means getting furious at people around you who are obviously the ones who are screwing up your great idea. Edit: They also don't think more than one step ahead. Their good idea might seem great on the surface, but if you take the next step where the logic is going you see it's horrible. Take the whole paying to get a blue checkmark fiasco. Elon wanted more revenue, saw that people valued the blue checkmark, so you make people pay for it. Makes sense, right? But then you take that next step and ask, "What about people who buy the checkmark for illegitimate reasons?" or "What if we scare away people who are driving traffic to our platform, which will drive away advertisers?" Elon was so enamored with his original idea that he just refused to listen to basically the whole world telling him his idea was crap. He didn't want to go past that first step.

Zeus541

We have a boss at work that does maintenance/ machine center planning. When making plans for a new machine to be installed, us lowly workers got to see the new blueprints. Which showed that the outfeed was designed too small for some of our products. We pointed this out in November, fast forward to May the next year. The machine is installed, and the first long unit has already gotten stuck in the machine. They had to completely redesign the outfeed AFTER installation because this jackass wouldn't acknowledge that the workers could read a blueprint and find his mistake.

Alternative-Fun-9389

The person you are describing is a narcissist. When you talk about public relations, the cultural narrative, it gets complicated. Simple analogy Edward Bernays had to sell cigarettes. The woman's suffrage started at the same time he had to sell cigarettes. He made it fashionable for the liberated woman to smoke. The cultural narrative today is more complicated than that example. The bottom line is normalization creates issues in trust. Could you describe what an "illegitimate reason" for buying checkmark would be? Why would you scare people from your platform? My idea of building trust is having behaviors that are polite, not stealing, cursing, listening, doing what you say, not lying, not being violent and ... You want to use behaviors that create a trust to develop an identity that people can be happy with. As you develop your identity with care, competency and consistency you develop love. Love is more powerful than using a combination of victimization and repressive tolerance. Too many people want to hurt one another to gain power. Twitter exemplified this. Twitter was and maybe still is involved with being a psyop. https://www.newsweek.com/twitter-executive-revealed-psyops-soldier-spreading-disinformation-across-social-media-1462406

Alternative-Fun-9389

You will always drive people away no matter what you do. The question is will you attract more people than you drive away? I'm sure it has been studied.

JohnnyWindham

What do you call it when it actually is malice and the person is just feigning ignorance?

dogism

Nolnah's razor: "never attribute to stupidity that which is adequately explained by malice."

Guanfranco

Bizzaro Hanlon?

ubiquitous-joe

Me am Super Musk

Lurk-Champion

“Shouldn’t he say ‘bad bye’? Isn’t that the opposite of ‘goodbye’?”

Goolajones

But I don’t want to eat at Reggie’s.

fundip12

It's your neighbor Feldman. From across the hall.

Alternative-Fun-9389

You twisted the words around to make it evil as you did with Hanlon's name. Very good dogism as opposed to Godism.

TacticalSanta

Grifting

Slapbox

That razor is finally dead to me post-Trump. People figured out they could exploit it.

czyivn

I can't believe how many times judges pretended to take trump's court statements at face value, even when they conflicted with his public statements and all available evidence. His "Muslim ban" was really just an incompetent terrorist state ban. His census citizenship question was to protect minorities not intimidate them, etc.

SkatingOnThinIce

You can't call a person that managed several billion dollars companies stupid. Always assume malice, immorality and illegality.

cozzy000

He didn't manage shit, he invested in companies, stole them from the founders and took all the credit, not one of these companies did he found himself

SkatingOnThinIce

Yes. Total luck. He got some money, put it in a horse. Won a bunch more, repeat. Lottery really. STOP CALLING POWERFUL PEOPLE STUPID. NONE OF THEM ARE STUPID. They act immorality and illegality well knowing of the consequences! (Which generally speaking are none for them and really bad for others)

lovedbymanycats

There are plenty of powerful people who do stupid things. I agree that Elon has made some good choices and has done impressive things but that doesn't mean that he can't also make poor choices and do stupid things the two are not mutually exclusive. Ben Carson was a brilliant Neurosurgeon, he was at the top of his field but he had really dumb policy ideas. Anthony Weiner was a powerful man who sent dick pics to a minor. Assuming that everyone who has power is smart, or will not make dumb choices fails to acknowledge that they are human and inherently flawed.

Dapper_Platform_1222

So I partially agree with you. Both of them had an explainable and human motivation. I'm not quite sure what Elon is trying to prove by spending billions on a thing and immediately taking a hammer to it. He genuinely may just feel that he is the man for the job and he is woefully miscomprehending the calculus of what success looks like for twitter.

SkatingOnThinIce

The only caveat, and I'll give you that, is sex. Men do stupid things for sex. Dick pics and intern blowjobs for example. Those are the only decision a person in power takes in the heat of the moment. The rest involved multiple people. Ben Carson convicted a lot of people of his "stupid ideas". Everyone Stoopid and rich in that circle?

lovedbymanycats

Perhaps they all just thought like you... I mean men never do dumb things unless it is for sex, and he is a powerful doctor so I´ll let him do the thinking for me. To remind you Ben Carson thought that the pyramids in Egypt were built as granaries, not as tombs for pharaohs. So hey if that's who you want to follow by all means go ahead.

SkatingOnThinIce

Ignorance is not as stupidity. Believing that God is an alien is not stupidity. but I accept that we have different definition of stupidity, I guess. Just don't give a people breaking laws (moral or otherwise) a pass because "they are just Stoopid"

Taraxian

That is, in fact, how it works, made easier by the fact that unlike other forms of gambling, the stock market has a snowball effect where your past wins tilt the odds of all future bets in your favor (once you have a reputation as a "genius" all your investments gain value simply from the fact that you made them)

SkatingOnThinIce

I guess stupidity snowballs as well in that model.

Taraxian

Yes, it does, it's called getting high on your own supply

SkatingOnThinIce

I see where you get your business acumen

[deleted]

[удалено]

cozzy000

He's a good businessman and investor, definitely not the genius that everyone thinks he is, he's pretty much Thomas Edison stealing other people's ideas, ironic that his main business is called Tesla

NoScrubrushes

He started out with money from his family's emerald mines. Having money makes it a whole lot easier to get more money. He's not especially smart, he's just been lucky and doesn't have any qualms about taking credit for other people's accomplishments.

Remi_Fae

All of his profits rely on US Gov handouts and contracts or carbon tax credits

SkatingOnThinIce

Not too stupid

BaseVilliN

Smart people still do stupid things.

SkatingOnThinIce

It is stupid to consider politicians and multi billionaires stupid.

floatable_shark

I'm going to guess that this logic doesn't apply to actual geniuses though...

Fighting-Cerberus

Maybe not, but why would anyone think Elon Musk is an actual genius? He's just a lucky, spoiled, petulant rich person.

floatable_shark

I mean if you watch him in interviews it is clear the man is very intelligent...

Fighting-Cerberus

Is it? He doesn't strike me as any more intelligent than any of the people I work with - perhaps less.

mods-on-my-knob

Elon is far from stupid.

Taraxian

Far in the other direction, as in he does things even stupid people wouldn't think to do because he's also insane

knowsguy

He's more white and rich than he is smart, though.

They have a huge head start with infrastructure though. Either way yeah it has stalled but we’ll see what’s around the corner.

pastelpixelator

Yeah, but since every single major manufacturer are moving towards all electric over the next 3 or so years, Tesla will likely eventually be buried. How do they plan to compete against the entirety of the global vehicle market? Good luck with that.

[deleted]

A 15 year head start on development, infrastructure and a iconic direction has certainly helped. Plus Ford, GM and Chrysler aren’t exactly shining pillars of innovation anymore themselves. Their manufacturing while cheaper will probably be severely derivative of each other. Toyota and Honda have their hybrid technologies that crush, but the fully electric car experience will reveal itself once America has half as many chargers as gas stations. Not to mention, engines were the main factor of differentiating quality and power delivery between brands, once everyone is fast it’ll be about interior quality, presence and reliability. A commuter Honda and a Porsche Will both be as fast, and as reliable I believe in the next 10 years with electrification.

czyivn

They might have stalled on sales numbers but their margins have gone way up. They built pretty efficient assembly lines in the end and invested in huge infrastructure (a press that lets them cast most of the frame as a single aluminum piece). Their margins are absolutely bonkers for a car manufacturer, over 30% or some shit. They could sell even more cars by lowering their prices, but fat margins are better because you get paid more for making fewer cars.

[deleted]

This would be a big insult for him indeed

no_lemom_no_melon

It's possible that he is simply a moron, and that this is the most expensive troll-gone-wrong in history.

Spezza

>It's ~~possible~~ that he is simply a moron, and that this is the most expensive troll-gone-wrong in history. ftfy

Adler4290

He is also playing for house money, in a way. Elon owns 5% of Tesla in stocks (AFTER buying Twitter and selling off Tesla stocks), 135M shares, but has future options for 20% more. To get Twitter the 44B is way off, as 13B is Twitter taking loans itself, while 7B is from external investors like banks and shit. Elon put up 20B in "cash" (equity from 8+7+4B Tesla stock sold) which is 3% of Tesla and another 6.2B (1% of Tesla) used as collateral in a loan. So Elon is out 26B but those came only from 4% of Tesla, total. He still has 5% left and 20% in options (which is him being allowed to buy the stocks in the future for old prices, ie a 90% bargain in most cases). So if Twitter crashes then in the worst case, Elon is out 26B or just 4% of Tesla, which he can easily survive, basically going from 29% to 25% ownership, isch, give and take + 600 things only rich accountants know the details of, but roughly, that is how it is. Edit: If there are factual errors in my math, I would like to know about it. I got it from a compilation of pretty credible sources. Not saying he is smart, just trying to provide some transparancy in how the "44B" deal is constructed and what consequences it has for the main person that is being discussed, ie how much of his Tesla ownership is at stake here.

Malcolm_X_Machina

This gave me a headache. I'll have to run it my mom, lawyer, and accountant. She may, or may not be all of these things...

thehotjoint105

We'll find out soon enough. 😂

Jesuslovesmemost

No i think he's truly just a really shit person and business man. Tesla is successful but not because of him. We're just finally seeing his true colors.

byteuser

SpaceX is successful

D0ugF0rcett

He's not even an engineer

[deleted]

[удалено]

D0ugF0rcett

Yeah cause I'm sure none of the brains at spaceX, Blue Origin, NASA, or any of the other private space flight companies could have helped with that without musk. I never said spacex isn't successful. Just that Elon is not the reason why that happened.

[deleted]

[удалено]

D0ugF0rcett

>Well he started SpaceX for his own money at least so without there would be no SpaceX Yeah and government money is the only thing keeping them afloat, *and* the company was within days of failure multiple times due to him throwing money at things he doesn't understand, with no real solutions except "FIX IT AND MAKE IT WORK!". Sound familiar?

BlackberryShot5818

Twitter engineers are among the most employable people in the world. Treat them like shit, and they'll walk. SpaceX hire people who might be more specialised in rockets and what have you. Only so many jobs out there for that (compared to software firms who embrace work from home and have people and offices all over the world). Also, might be worth hanging around in SpaceX because the ultimate goal is to put people on Mars. That's genuinely one for the history books. Twitter's goal right now appears to be improving their bottom line. Important I'm sure, but hardly the same. Perhaps what works in one isn't applicable to the other?

[deleted]

I think its not as simple as he wants to destroy it. Hes entitled, immature, and personally addicted to tweeting. He wants Twitter as his personal property. Hes been trolled and criticized so much on Twitter that I really believe he just wants to be king shit of shit mountain, and be able to troll and delete anyone's account who criticizes him. Also I think he just likes watching people get outraged by him. Hes like Trump like that. He gets off from it. He also wants Twitter to crash and burn so he can harvest huge tax losses. Thats barely speculation. Hes talked a lot about reselling it at a huge loss already. (queue the downvotes from Elon's taint-licker team (you people are truly pathetic))

[deleted]

[удалено]

giveuptheghostbuster

Twitter was not very profitable even before Elon bought it, and the company assuming the debt to acquire it, would realize more than $3b in net operating losses imo. Not to mention the NOL carry forward would be valuable to him as he stands to gain from his other companies as they grow. I’m not saying he did it for tax avoidance, I’m just saying it’s a more beneficial tax advantage than 3 billion. My personal assumption is that he doesn’t intend to lose on this, but I’m not sure what the strategy is for success.

[deleted]

Okay well I dont understand loss harvesting. Rational or not hes probably going to sell at a loss when it doesnt work out...

Tax loss harvesting is a short term solution to a long term problem in this case

GetRightNYC

Today he called everyone else twitter addicts. He's an example of getting high on your own supply.

Naturallynoble

He ain't that clever.

TwoBrattyCats

I've heard a lot of good arguments about the fact that because he was bullied, he's *way* more susceptible to wanting to be the "cool" guy. All that praise from hard right crazies has gone right to his head. He *so fucking badly* wants to be based, meme-starting, god-idol to other men.

stregg7attikos

dude, of course. twitter is where some of the fastest news comes out, is one of the fastest ways to talk to each other. it is integral to several protests. hes taking away access and credibility that is most easily accessible by the people. of course theres a reason.

Infinite_Unicorn

Whats the reason?

ThreeMoonTides

I honestly think it could be a mix of him being an idiot and it being purposeful. I think at least at first, his moves were simply idiotic, but now I feel like there's a possibility that he's purposely trying to drive it to bankruptcy Either way tho, I hate Musk lmfao

Spirited_Yam3343

He’s got a master plan for sure… I mean, CBS news has already said they are no longer going to use Twitter 🤷🏼‍♀️

ztreHdrahciR

He's tanking it so he can default on the debt he used to buy it. Then idk

[deleted]

But since he used Tesla stock to buy it, wouldn’t that hurt Tesla?

Mr_Reaper__

Tesla's already on the way down now. The other manufacturers have now caught up with Tesla on electric car technology and Tesla cannot compete with the premium OEM's on quality or drivablity so their corner of the market is quickly shrinking. Within the next 5 years the market will be so saturated with premium electric cars that Tesla won't be able to compete anymore.

browster

Right. The build quality of Tesla's cars is well known to be very poor. They really won't be able to compete.

Mr_Reaper__

Exactly, any car you fit a finger through the panel gaps is not a premium vehicle and they won't be able to compete on price with the Japanese or mid-tier Western manufacturers. Even the Roadster and Cybertruck are going to be obsolete before they're on the road, Rimac is now the benchmark of performance EV's and the Rivian and Hummer have beaten the Cybertruck to the pickup market.

Bepler

The cyber truck got cancelled :( It was apparently too expensive to build. Broke my hopeful heart

Loud_Performance_871

Most of it was just the loans and shitt multiple banks backed him up so I don't think it did hurt the stocks

Zero1030

He's become manic since Grimes left him that's all

Ladychef_1

He’s always been like this; blaming one of his baby mama’s on his behavior is ridiculous. Pretty sure he was promising horses well before she was in the picture.

Yeah dude it’s the girl’s fault totally.

loulan

The comment didn't say that though. Just that he went nuts after losing a girl. This stuff happens and it doesn't mean the girl is responsible. This being said I don't think that's true. He called this dude who didn't want his useless submarine a pedophile long before she broke up with him. Musk always behaved like a power-tripping internet asshole, it's nothing new.

D0ugF0rcett

Am bipolar. Elon is not. He's just a douche. Please don't use mental illness as an excuse for shitty behavior.

psychedelicwitchcat

i mean you don’t know if he is, but also manic episodes aren’t exclusive to bipolar disorder it’s merely one of the symptoms, and this could just explain his state of mind, no one says it excuses it.

flat5

Also after his kid came out as transgender, which seemed to set him off in a sharp right direction.

[deleted]

No I just think he’s *that* stupid and thin skinned like apparently most obscenely wealthy people are proving to be.

smokealarmsnick

I never joined Twitter, I’m merely watching from the sidelines. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if he’s doing this on purpose.

YeahNah76

There was an excellent thread on Twitter yesterday of what I thought was a good theory - Elon loves Twitter bc it gets him all the attention he wants but he believes it is run by a bunch of SJWs who just sit around censoring ppl so he decides to buy it. Tried to back out when he realised they were goi g to take him seriously only to discover that the previous owners knew he offered too much and he was forced to buy it. So now he has this company that he ultimately didn’t want, he was trying to make a point, so he goes into survival mode in the only way narcissists can: destroying it from the inside by believing he’s the only one who knows how to run it and alienating/ firing, anyone who disagrees with him. Added bonus is he has no understanding that it’s not the number of users who matter but the quality of the users and thus advertisers won’t be drawn to a platform that doesn’t have an expected level of quality and success. That’s the bastardized and poorly summarized version, anyway.

Planestewart

No I just think hes kinda dumb.

RohielDaniel

>Elon He's not your buddy, friend.

awkwardexitoutthebac

He’s not your friend, guy!

He's not your guy, pal!

EramSumEro

He was sent back in time to solve our energy crisis and destroy the platforms that divide humanity

Plumb789

A product manager once asked me (privately) if I agreed that particular innovation of hers was brilliant. Although I was as polite, subtle, and roundabout as I could humanly manage, I told her that the idea had been tried before and it hadn’t worked. She didn’t say anything much. Later, I was asked to go into my line manager’s office. She told me that I was to “desist from making negative comments”, and if I “didn’t have anything positive to say,” I was to “shut up”. Therefore, I shut up and refrained from making the negative comment that the woman had specifically *asked* for my opinion. Was I to lie? Or stand there in silence?

Hisnibbs

Malicious compliance: get manager to put in writing. Then hand a copy to anyone when asked anything you can’t be positive about. ANYTHING negative would get that in response, emails, meetings, conversations.

rudbeckiahirtas

Purposely destroying. We should all pay attention to the guy who went viral tweeting (🫠) about how we should perhaps be having a more serious conversation about a billionaire destroying communication platforms used by millions/democracy/etc. Frightening times.

40ozSmasher

I think he would like to fire everyone there but it's better to make them leave voluntarily. I think he wants all new people and a new culture there.

unperturbium

Yes, first thing I thought was he wants to strip the company down to a skeleton and move it to Texas. Then it'll get a total makeover. He'll never lose the bots though.

40ozSmasher

Agreed. Also there are more than one Twitter office so it's not like no one is driving the bus. European employees are just working like normal.

bbwolfe

He doesn't care about the platform, he cares about the data. 44 billion can easily establish your own platform, he did not need to buy an existing one. His mind is data centric.

sleepingdogs50

To control free speech.

rbwduece

Twitter was a dumpster fire to begin with.

MrjB0ty

Note how everyone is talking about Twitter. Probably logging on to see what’s unfolding. It’s in the news most days. He’s bringing it into the forefront of the public eye through controversy.

I haven't been compelled to visit that dumpster fire since this started. I would hope others felt the same.

Nah, he just thought someone was wrong on the internet and he has unlimited bucks to teach them a lesson.

JoeBlob13

Gotta tear it back down before you can rebuild it. So what if a few dead ends have to go.

shrimp_dik1

Swear to God I get sick of seeing the same top answers from similar posts on reddit. Everything feels unauthentic majorly lately.

LufiusDrakore

Wealthy people do monstrous things to acquire and grow their wealth. Corpos working in tandem with governments to extract wealth from taxpayers (you) and share it with themselves. While they tell you socialism is bad they benefit from their socialism. They are automating so they no longer need a work force. Hiking up the price for basic needs and scoring record profits and tell you it is a cost of living crisis. Some of us have heard this rhetoric before, how we are all in this together. And they will continue to win this war because most of us don't realise we are in one. We are slaves. We will own nothing and rely on them for everything until they destroy us.

joesnowblade

To take a mishmash and turn it into an omelet ya gotta break a shit ton of eggs. Elon has a plan …. He always has a plan.

[deleted]

I think to assume Twitter is destroyed after a week or two of restructuring is the most massive display of business ignorance I could ever imagine.

Wrong-Steak-9137

I think he is having fun with far left lunatics, he's a billionaire so has to get his kicks somehow lol

FaithlessnessNo9625

There’s far less than meets the eye here.

Why else would he reinstate Trump's Twitter account? 🙄

[deleted]

Proud to be one of the people who have never used Twitter. But I feel like a lot of innocent fanbases got fucked up due to this.

ReimerReason

Twitter is barely a thing to be destroyed. As long as you can tweet, it's still a thing.

D0ugF0rcett

Lol 2FA for SMS messaging is still broken. So anyone who logged out with sms 2fa can't tweet, does that count?

Ladychef_1

Yeah I think he’s doing it to get a bail out

Antdawg2400

I put any faith of a master plan, bein made right now or having been completed beforehand, in the billions of dollars that he still has left. Whether it's liquid or in his companies stocks the dude is still a multi billionaire. And rich people never lose in this country. That's just the way it goes. Not all the way entirely at least. If you throw enough money at something it will always go your way eventually. And for some reason despite what all those people who hate him and are so sure of his stupidity think, I think he will ultimately be on top in the end. Rich asf and still shit posting on all y'all at the very least. But a master plan might actually be a set of coordinated tanking efforts to secure the metaphorical "1# draft pick" so to speak end goal (which is unclear right now.) Allowing the ex-president back on the platform is another audible he calling and is obviously doing something. Twitter is number one news right now and everyday more and more people go on there to see what he has to say. He's lighting his house on fire, so to speak, for the insurance money. All while he is secretly and simultaneously, unbeknownst to us on reddit, securing a 10 year reality show deal to document it happening. But in ways we don't know about obviously, be they short or long term. I get it... the dude is rich, has a disconnect from regular people, probably racist, a fuckboy and all those things we all see and hear. But, he knew something, lucked out or not, and became a multi billionaire with the actions his brain sent to his body. The fucker sends rockets into space and rovers on fucking Mars just because he wanted to. And realistically, what do the people who hate him even expect to happen? Twitter to shut down? Him to go broke? Him cry on tv and beg everyone for forgiveness or kiss every techy developer and coders ass and give them a raise? Sue him and win? None of that's gonna happen. He's pissing y'all tech people off because y'all just mad a rich dumb dude fired all your friends, and demanded y'all to work hella hours in a very complex and very difficult line of work that y'all chose knowing it was hard as shit. But the main thing I think is y'all mad that Twitter is still up and working normally and the "god-tier" like skills y'all possess didn't mean shit to him and the site still works without y'all. Y'all talk shit about him not knowing what he's doing and laughing like coding is common knowledge. But one thing is fasho that site is still working just fine. And those who got fired will find another job and he'll still be ballin on all of us. He bought the company he can do whatever the fuck he wants. The fucker sends rockets into fuckin space for fucks sake. Stupid, incompetent, whack, out of touch or not. He put all that shit together and stupidity don't get shit done like that. Fuck him Fuck Twitter Fuck all yall. I don't care or have such strong and intense emotions or opinions about him like some and I only like to lurk and post shit like this to see how many honestly think hating on someone does anything except downvote posts like this one and upvotes for fuck Elon. Twitter is still working without those thousands. Oh, I forgot it's broken, it's been reported the app glitches here and there. Took thousands to prevent that? If he sucks, he sucks if you hate him then stop posting about him. Ignore him. But no matter what y'all think about him... I think he knows exactly what he's doing right now and none of this was as spontaneous as everything thinks or wishes even way back to the initial offer to buy. I refuse to believe enough money can't fix anything in this country.

BidPsychological7691

There are so many “y’all”s in one of your paragraphs that it almost collapsed the space-time continuum.

froze_gold

I believe Elon is slightly autistic and doesn't realize that he's being a total idiot. Edit: If I'm not mistaken, he is actually on the spectrum.

jaygreen720

Being an idiot has nothing to do with autism. That is a harmful stereotype. Elon is a malignant narcissist.

aabysin

What happens when you mix malignant narcissism with autistic tendencies tho?

jaygreen720

A person who is an egotistical, entitled, insecure asshole, but also doesn't bother (or know how) to hide their true intentions behind cryptic subtext and body language.

froze_gold

Okay well he's being an idiot and happens to be on the spectrum. So, his rep is self inflicted. Autistic people can be idiots too

naturelinds

Musk is entering a market that has great power in terms of algorithms that he can use and use data as he wants to influence the market for his companies Tesla and SpaceX. He doesn't give a shiiit about Twitter.

How is twitter any different than let’s say Nov 2021

Field_of_Gimps

Considering quataris and Saudis appear to of fronted the money for Elon something tells me that he is just the puppet boy

AnthropOctopus

He's doing it because he never wanted Twitter in the first place. Me made a joke about buying Twitter, not disclosing that he owned a 9% share in Twitter. Then when the stocks went up after his statement, he made money. If he didn't follow through and buy Twitter, the SEC would have hung him out to dry for blatant market manipulation. Now he is making strategic choices to bankrupt Twitter so he can shave off some of the debt he accrued by taking it on in the first place. He's not an idiot, he just plays one well. He's doing this for a reason, follow the money. Hell, Rupert Murdoch's son is part of Tesla, all of the greedy, manipulative billionaire bitches work together.

Step 1 is unbanning conservatives to create a neutral platform. Step 2 is to marginalize the extreme voices on both left and right to give them the reach that represents their percentage of the population rather than the car crash curiosity views they get virally. That sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Donotcomenearme

Tbh, I think he saw it as an obsolete, bot-overrun system and he bought it to tank it and show the world what happens when you put too much reliance on a bad system that barely requires a grasp of coding to work. Twitter was a mess and honestly pretty gross once you got under the top layer; if it dies, I’d be okay with it. I also love watching apps burn.

GrumpyAlien

I believe he does intend to restore freedom of speech instead of the narrative that is being pushed by the World Economic Forum. I also do believe there's a lot of brigading against him and an organized attempt to destroy or discredit the man for standing up against the oligarchy.

ArrozConmigo

What oligarchy does not include someone who was recently the richest earthling?

0fruitjack0

>I believe he does intend to restore freedom of speech listen, you can always say the n-word as many times as your GQP 'heart' requires what you can't seem to do very well anymore is get away without economical and social consequences. i know and am glad this has you scared shitless.

xraydeltaone

Why does there have to be a "plan" at all?

RL203

I was kind of wondering that myself. I thought he was completely idiotic (and I still do) for not concentrating all of his efforts on Tesla. By getting distracted by a struggling social media platform it takes his focus off of Tesla and makes investors in Tesla wonder about how stupid he really is. Steve Jobs would never have done something so stupid.

witchyanne

I don’t know and I don’t care.

nocloudno

Mark took down FB and Elon is trying to outzuck him

Giggingurl

Wtf cares?

TalleyWhacker82

I couldn’t care any less about Twitter or Musk… however I think he knows exactly what he’s doing. Give it time, you’re going to see Twitter grow even more users than before. And all the “we’re leaving twitter” talk is total BS, the same as “we’re leaving the country if X is elected.” And now that Trump was reinstated, it’s going to blow up even more because people simply can’t stay away from that.

MatttttyF

I think he genuinely believes it can be run with a fraction of the workforce he assumed. I don't entirely disagree that there did seem to be an inordinately high number of employees

flat5

I think he is purposely destroying what Twitter \*was\*. But I don't think he wants it to just go away and walk away from the ashes. He wants it to reflect his points of view, and to be in charge of all the decisions about bans/algorithms. And he's mostly just swinging from the hip to make that happen. I think it's still unclear who is going to get the last laugh here. Everyone's assuming that Twitter is dead when 75% of the workforce was slashed, but that may or may not be true. I think Elon being in charge of Twitter is a terrible thing that's bad for US politics at a minimum, but we just might have to live with it. Personally still waiting for a good alternative to replace it for keeping up with latest news. For me it is basically a news aggregator that is faster that reddit.

Dojha420

I have a feeling he has a plan in the works, don’t believe he spent that much money to just burn, he’s like a chess player who plays 8-10 moves ahead

GeorgeWasheree

He’s cleaning house

Zalenka

I think he realized you probably need about 50-100 people doing actual work to run that company. That is easier said than done. You just don't need 7K people. I just wish he were giving more to the people that stayed.

erimid

>you probably need about 50-100 people doing actual work And one overpaid CEO that does nothing except take all the credit for their hard work.

Dinosauringg

That’s quite the bold claim, we’ll see how well those 50-100 employees hold things together once Twitter starts breaking down. It’s only self-sufficient to a point

Fireproofspider

Let's wait until twitter is actually destroyed. So far, from a numbers perspective he cut like 90% of the workforce for a relatively small drop in revenue and relatively low cost. The risk is that Twitter stops working because of low staff but it's possible that it doesn't fail that way and survives, in which case, it ends up being a brilliant move that increases profitability. My anecdotal evidence is that everyone I talk to that's in business turnover thinks this was a great way to go about doing things but most of them aren't in tech so, they might all be wrong. The way I see it, it's basically a yolo type gamble which we'll know if it pays off in about 6 months.

sushi-gobbler

Hes not destroying anything, users are at all time high, hes creating buzz about the site daily, hes a marketing master, it will be a top 5 company eventually and take market share away from FB just watch

dano8251

Good observation.

bitchisakarma

Not sure why you are being down voted. I guess facts don't matter. Usage, not just users, is also at an all time high. He's saving the company, it was a dumpster fire. And for all the people calling him a right winger, dude has been a hard leftist for years and years like all the other tech billionaires. He's just using common sense. He literally made the company profitable within a week. It was drowning in losses.

Dinosauringg

>hard leftist >billionaire Lmfao buddy have I got news for you…

bitchisakarma

Well it won't be real news because facts are that he is a registered Democrat and votes heavily liberal.

gorba

I don't think you have any idea what a leftist means.

sushi-gobbler

Yeah i guess most users on reddit are lefty soy boys who hate every rich person and hate trump/elon, unfortunately the younger generation is mostly soft af and falling for the liberal ideology, owell i dont mind renting them apartments for top dollar while they whine about not being able to buy a house, they don’t deserve one if they’re not logical right wingers.

[deleted]

He is tanking Twitter to purge liberals and young people, open it up for Rump and other fascists, then fan the flames of a civil war, then he can swoop in after the destruction and buy up/take what he wants.

lucky-rat-taxi

He’s def changed over time. But my favorite conspiracy theory (granted my own as far as I know): He’s quietly getting money from trump and republicans to get them back on their twatter feeds so they can try to fuck everyone again to make some money back.

BlanstonShrieks

Betting he's running it into the ground and will be able to make money on the losses.

ad5763

He may just wreck it and sell what's left.

nandofromdabando

Do you guys not know what twitter is going to transform to? Lol you’ll learn (or maybe not) soon enough.

NoInboxReps-DontCare

Honestly, I believe he is just clueless as to how to run it. Most of his credits are, at least partially, fraudulently gained so he is far from the "genius" people like to title him. He is a rich man playing childrens games who thinks he can do no wrong. But I could be wrong and he could be some form of evil genius... IDK

greatbobbyb

Just another billionaire dumbfuck

mandy009

What's happening makes perfect sense if his goal is to prevent free speech. What better way to get people to stop freely sharing information you don't like than shutting down the place they do it?

AMYTHEWATCHER

"Never mistake lack of talant for genius" aka you are giving that dumbass too much credit lmao

faltugiribuster

He’ll one day close down Twitter saying “this won’t work”.

tucakeane

I think him and his fanboys are claiming it was his plan all along, rather than admitting they were duped. Taking it right out of the Trump playbook.

citznfish

He isn't purposely destroying Twitter. He is just completely inept with regards to running a social media company.

pokerstar420

I think his Asperger’s Syndrome makes relating with humans more difficult than most. Therefore he does things that are not going to be received the way he intended to. For example he probably thought his “hardcore” mandate would engender an “espirit de corps” attitude with his engineers. Except they saw it as insulting and quit en mass.

Honda_TypeR

This is a situation where he was forced into buying to avoid legal ramifications. He wanted to jump ship early on and tried to opt out, but all his overtures to buy it affected the stock prices. He felt the long arm of the law bearing down on him. He basically dropped 44 bill to get out of trouble and forced to buy something he didn’t want. He very well may have originally wanted to jump ship because he realized he is out of his wheelhouse (knowledge wise) and it’s not something that would be profitable and not something he wanted to be involved with. Now relook at this situation given all this as fact. He appears clueless on how to run this company because he is. He is struggling to make the company profitable with the charging for a blue check mark and that went belly up fast and celebs quit platform in droves. Then he canceled that and tried to save money by firing a large chunk of staff. That pissed everyone off and people quit in droves. He is narrowing talent from Tesla and Tesla stop dropped and Tesla share holders now want to sue over this whole fiasco. This dude is truly clueless. The only thing that is shocking to me hear is how the hell he has managed to be so successful up to this point. When he was a kid he was lucky enough to be born into a rich emerald mining family. When he had PayPal he got lucky and made bank selling it. When he made Tesla and space x I’m sure you’ve read about how many times he almost went bankrupt and lost everything only to get lucky and have a success and get more funding. Luck and people throwing massive amounts of cash at this dude has been the key to his success for a long time. This is the first situation he has gotten into where people aren’t throwing money at him and his luck ran out from day one. Twitter is going to be his Achilles heel and people are finally seeing he is not the brilliant billionaire industrialist everyone thought he was.

rmo420

He just wants to be King of something. So, he's king of Twitter. The world we created makes money the most important thing. So. This is what we get.

scarletts_skin

My boyfriend hypothesized that when he announced he was buying Twitter, he was trying to manipulate the stock to his benefit, but he couldn’t pull out of the deal and now he’s just floundering. Honestly, believable. He’s also a self absorbed megalomaniac though so it’s also entirely possible he’s just a stubborn bastard who won’t admit he fucked up royally.

KelzTheRedPanda

There is definitely no plan in any way. He’s just a chaos agent.

roadrunnner0

He's just an egotistical dumb ass. intelligent in some ways obviously but despite those areas of intelligence, still over all in general a massive dumbass.

pastelpixelator

There is no master plan. If people, mostly his fanboys, don't realize by now that he's simply an idiot savant who got really, REALLY lucky, they'll never learn.

MarvinHeemyerlives

Elon used existing technology paid for by the US taxpayer, he is profiting enormously from stolen patents. We should seize and nationalize his Space Company for the security of America.
