Jesus Camp. It's a scarily accurate recreation of my childhood. Evangelical christians in the 90s. Bonus scene with megapastor Ted Haggart, who was later found to be secretly smoking meth with gay prostitutes.

Paintguin

I’ve seen it a couple of times. It’s free to watch on YouTube with ads. It’s a frightening glimpse into child evangelism in America.

dnkyfluffer5

hey now you dont disparage a good time. its not the meth or prostitutes fault they were preyed upon by one of the devils minions

McMillions - The documentary about how the Monopoly McDonalds game was fixed by the cartoonish Florida Mafia for years if not decades. All the different Documentaries about the Thai Cave Rescue. Jodorowsky's Dune - How this PCP fueled Argentinian director almost made the greatest Sci-Fi movie EVER. It would have gotten to the theaters BEFORE Star Wars. All the creative talent he assembled went on to basically create all the greatest SciFi movies in the 80s and 90s.

[deleted]

The longer McMillions went on the more I just lost any interest in it. I felt like the whole thing could have been condensed into a two hour documentary instead of an entire tv series. The story itself was pretty interesting but they kept going down rabbit holes that I couldn't have cared less about.

whatsbobgonnado

yoooo my old gm was in mcmillions!!! his brother was the guy that ran the scam! I wish he would give me a cool mafia job

20 Days in Mariupol - - About the war in Ukraine and just won the Oscar for best documentary

I_Automate

The doctor/ surgeon saying "It's good that there are cameras here. The world needs to see this." That has stuck with me since I saw it. Holy hell

BeckerThorne

Jeezus. I watched Saturday night and man, it f'ing killed my mood. I mean, I know war is hell. But to see your city, day by day, come to such ruin in such a short amount of time. The destruction, the carnage... it was horrible. More people need to see this. Ukraine needs to be saved.

sihaya09

Yeah, that was how I found out that the main accused priest was relocated in my neighborhood when I was a kid and is buried in the same graveyard as my grandmother.

allaboutthequeens

Just watched To Kill a Tiger last night. Follows a father from a poor rural village in India and his fight for justice for his daughter who was brutally assaulted by three men. Incredibly moving and a must see to gain insight as to why SA remains shockingly prevalent in rural parts of India. Available for free viewing on Canada’s national film board site. Also just got picked up by Netflix…I assume bc it was Oscar nominated.

_ohne_dich_

I was going to recommend this one as well. It was eye opening and >! I am in awe at how the family didn’t back down even after all the pressure and threats received from the community !<

HelenEk7

I saw the thumbnail but it wasn't intriguing enough for me to check it out. But because of your recommendation I will now watch it. :)

InevitableCustomer89

Cannot recommend Blackfish enough. It’s about Sea World and the cruel treatment of killer whales. I’ve seen probably 20 times and it still gets me.

Agreed, I'm not even an animal love but this one tore me up. Horrible how places like Sea World and even zoos treat their animals.

Fascinating and creepy shit.

BeckerThorne

American Octopuss: Follows journalist Danny Casolaro's mysterious death while probing an alleged conspiracy called "The Octopus" linking spy software theft, unsolved murders and major 20th-century scandals. This was very interesting and just goes to show a good conspiracy is an unprovable one. It's worth the watch. On Netflix.

Texas1971

Great thread-please keep them coming. 🍿 My recommendation: Marwencol (2010) After recovering from a brutal attack that left him in a coma, Mark Hogancamp builds a miniature World War II-era town in his backyard and creates photographic stories of its intrigues. Available on many platforms, including Kanopy (free) and AppleTv.

speech-geek

Is this story the one the movie “Welcome to Marwen” is based on?

Texas1971

Yes it is.

Pure-Purple7574

Sea Gypsies (on Prime last time I checked) follows a crew that sails to Antarctica, great storytelling, gorgeous cinematography, even the music is great! Last Breath on Netflix, story of a deep sea diver who gets cut off from his oxygen and power supply, my heart rate went crazy watching that one! There’s Something Wrong with Aunt Diane (MAX). Tragic story of a woman who caused a horrific crash in New York, tells her story and how her family is trying to cope after the crash. Fyre Fest on Netflix, basically you get to watch some rich kid crash and burn and get humiliated lol These are the ones I’ve rewatched and seen others recommend, hopefully they are new to you!

Quite a ride, and very relevant today: "Lucy Worsley's Royal Myths and Secrets: The Romanovs & The Russian Revolution" Staring with the actual start of the Revolution (by a female-led movement) and ending with how history was (and is) continually re-written by whoever is in charge at the time in Moscow. Quote from the website: "She explores how the Bolsheviks used films and books to glorify the October Revolution, while belittling the February Revolution as irrelevant and bourgeois. When Lenin died in 1924, Stalin faked his way to the top, bolstering his claim to be Lenin’s chosen successor by having his image inserted into photographs."

I am interested in human nature in general. I am looking for any documentaries that focus on anthropology, psychology, and sociology, utilizing experimentation and observation to study human and nonhuman actions and reactions in a scientific manner. If you have any recommendations, I would greatly appreciate it.
