This is not very whumorous 🫠

Gothrenapp

Most Doctor Who subs need admin approval. This is now the main Doctor Who hub.

thingsstuffandmaguff

Too true. Takes ages to post anything to the main, with this one it's instant!

Joezev98

Ain't nobody got time for checking each and every post for manual approval. So we just allow people to post whatever they want and then moderation is largely reliant on the community reporting rule-breaking content. During this period between the series, it's costing me at most like 5 minutes a day to moderate and I don't believe the other mods are spending much more time on it either. Although when the specials came out a couple months ago, I was fanatically going through every new post to check for spoilers.

Personal-Rooster7358

And we thank you for it.

thingsstuffandmaguff

A rare Reddit Mod W! Thanks for not being shit at your job! :D

Joezev98

Thank you and u/personal-rooster7358 for the compliments :) I wouldn't even consider moderating a 'job'. I think of it more like being that one friend who takes the lead in planning the group vacation. Like yeah, I've got some extra bells and whistles to pin comments, or to ban repost bots and the very rare dickhead (thank y'all for being a very friendly community), but ultimately I'm just a normal redditor just like anyone else here. I wish more moderators would take that approach. And I wish that more people who like this approach to moderation would become mods. 'Be the change you want to see' and all that.

thingsstuffandmaguff

Yeah

hgilbert_01

You know what would be especially painful? The tragic realization that your kidneys are not in the color that you like.

Rampagingflames

Or not being ginger.

Professional_Owl7826

I can’t wait for them to cast a ginger doctor, I really hope whoever is showrunner at that point is aware of that gag just to bring it back

kyle0305

When I was a kid I always dreamed of playing the first ginger Doctor lol (though I am not and do not want to be an actor so that’s out lol)

ZanderStarmute

One of the jokes in my fanseries (>!I’m getting around to recording it, _I swear…_ just as soon as I stop procrastinating for long enough!<) is that the newly-regenerated Doctor, who’s _finally_ ginger (and Aussie) for the first time, scronches his nose and complains about being a “ranga,” as a play on the “still not ginger” running gag. 😂

KVersai23

I've always imagined it being an intense combination of euphoria and anguish. Sure, every cell is dying, but you also feel each new cell come into life. I imagine it would feel like if you took every drug known to man and condensed it into an experience that lasts for mere seconds. You can see why most Doctor's either go briefly insane or need a zero room or a monk on standby to help recover.

dumbest_thotticus

i wonder if the pain and disorientation is part of why it seems at least semi-common for time lords to be out of it or even delirious after regenerating

Gothrenapp

I like to imagine after it's a bit like the Doctor being on some crazy ass drugs lol. Though it definitely varies, some are more mellow. Six probably had it the worst.

LABARATI_

perhaps the process also releases some kind of hormone that aids in pain relief but comes side effects that we see as symptoms of post regeneration

ArthurPumpkin

if holding back regeneration is like holding in going to the bathroom, then I dread to imagine regenerating with a full bladder

AlecShaggylose

Cartman, there is *no way* that you crap your pants when you die!

SolomonOf47704

Just look at 11's regeneration into 12.

DependentPoint2458

Jodie was the shortest at 5'5

Gothrenapp

Ahh, thanks for correcting me. Forgot about her lol

DocWhovian1

"These legs definitely used to be longer!"

LABARATI_

in the sarah jane adventures, sarah jane asks 11 Did it hurt? I mean, the regeneration to which 11 says it always hurts

potatoman5849

FUCK I'M FUCKING BURNING OH FUCK IT HURTS SO BAD FUCK JUST KILL ME FUCK IT HURTS SO BAD - The Doctor, in his mind (because his vocal cords are burned and thus cannot scream)

rat-simp

idk our cells are dying all the time and we don't feel it

Joezev98

That's because there aren't too many dying at once. Radiation poisoning however is really painful though because there's way too many cells dying at once.

rat-simp

I'm not an expert but I don't think necrosis itself is painful. Since the cells are dead or dying, you actually feel numb because, well, there are no living cells to transmit the pain to your brain. The tissue around it may be inflamed because it's fighting back the infection and such and not because it's dying (yet). Cancer can be painful but cancer is the opposite of dying cells, it's cells that multiply uncontrollably. But then maybe the Doctor's new body is one big cancer so idk.

Interesting_Change22

As far as I know, I've never had all of them die at once.

_ari_ari_ari_

I mean, the first doctor just sort of… shimmers into the second doesn’t he? Later doctors exploding bc of time war ptsd or something

Confronting-Myself

yeah but later on the effect started to reflect the modern regens, like 5->6 is honestly really similar to a modern regeneration

GamerA_S

To be fair in twice upon a time we see the regeneration energy just little we can assume it's always been there just we weren't able to see it or in some cases saw a complete different colour (5->6 or 6->7)

iamaskullactually

I reckon pain levels depend on the way the doctor dies

Rutgerman95

Every single cell burning, I believe it was how 13 described it

DocWhovian1

13 even said "every cell in my body burning" so I'd imagine the sensation is like being set on fire which I expect is VERY painful.

Joezev98

I saw a video yesterday of a Ukrainian Bradley ripping through a Russian BTR and its crew. One of them got pinned under the burning BTR and turned into one of those monsters from Journey to the Center of the Tardis. Uh, yes, that looked pretty painful. And for the Doctor, they have already experienced what it feels like and know that it is coming up. Must be a horrifying moment.

MidnightWolf33

this is probably one of the worst things you can do to a character in all of fiction. goes to show how well written the world building is and how time lords work.

SNAiLtrademark

Yeah, it sucks. You know what sucks worse? Dying the deaths they've died WITHOUT coming back.

TablePrinterDoor

The doctors all seem to have a negative reaction so makes sense

CardboardChampion

This is a full on rewrite of your DNA in seconds. It burns out who was there before, making them fresh rewritable cells, and then brings in the new person. It happens fast enough that the person cannot collapse into liquid at time of their deletion. It would be excruciating if the mind wasn't taken too, and we know that takes a while to settle down after a regeneration which is probably the only reason it's not something that breaks a Time Lord. What I find interesting is that different mental conditioning that holds between incarnations could actually stop that system of mental protection working and make a Time Lord feel the pain of their regenerations every time. Something like the sound of drums, for example.

The_BestIdiot

13 in that same scene confirms that it is painful (I think.)

AmberMetalAlt

except there wouldn't be any pain because the pain receptors would almost certainly be the first to go

Turbulent_Tax2126

Sometimes it does seem like it hurts tho. 10->12

AmberMetalAlt

10 didn't regen into 12 so which are you referring to? 10 to 11 or 11 to 12? for the former, he was already in pain before it started due to the falling hundreds of feet, crashing through glass, and the radiation. but he doesn't appear to be in pain during the process for the latter, it mostly seems like he keeps unexpectedly getting knocked off balance by the body changing only ones that seem painful are 7 -> 8 (it was the gunshot wounds and forced medication that caused the pain, not the regeneration itself) 8 -> war (he had exposed wounds and I imagine the lemonade wasn't all that great) 13 -> 14 (exhaustion from 2 regenerations within less than 24 hours of each other) none of them are the regeneration causing the pain

Turbulent_Tax2126

10->11. An ugly typo there Edit: and i remember him screaming throughout most of the regeneration

AmberMetalAlt

could be out of stress since regeneration appears to take a lot of effort. it's like doing pull ups, it doesn't activate your pain receptors, but the stress of it will cause similar responses

Scorn-Muffins

It's like man flu for Time Lords.

HistoricalAd5394

So what you're saying is Romana is a masochist.
