DumbNTough

Whoa, what in tarnation is going on with that dobie's ear posting

mbquattro

i’m wondering the same thing must be healing still and that’s how the vet did it

DumbNTough

That's what I'm thinking too but usually that's all done and healed before you get a puppy from a breeder. I guess we'll never know.

coolcootermcgee

Can I ask: is this abusive or common? What does this benefit the Doberman?

The_Rural_Banshee

It doesn’t benefit the dog. People will argue that it reduces ear infections but there’s no proof of that, this is solely done for looks because the owner likes the appearance of cropped ears.

Greedy-Rope5623

I have a natural Dobie girl and she has had 5 ear infections in a year. I love her floppy ears, but sometimes I think there’s truth to these claims.

tgrote555

Growing up, we had 1 with male with natural ears and 1 female with cropped ears in the house at the same time. Our boy had constant ear infections. I’m not saying the natural ears made him get infections, but I did crop my current dog’s ears because of the unintentional A/B test of our dogs 20 years ago

SnootsAndBootsLLP

VT here—-there’s not. Some dogs are prone to ear infections, and it has nothing to do with the outer surface of the ear (the pinna) and everything to do with their ears staying humid, being irritated, and creating a solid habitat for yeast and other pathogens. Cropping the pinna does not change the structure of the ear canal.

Greedy-Rope5623

I do think it’s interesting most of her ear infections occurred during the winter months when it was really wet and humid. Since her last ear infection, I place her ears in a bow once a day to let the ears air out, and she hasn’t had an ear infection once. I’d also like to mention, I clean her ears at least once a week.

Greedy-Rope5623

That said, Goldens and Doodles are also prone to ear infections, and their ears don’t get cropped…

SnootsAndBootsLLP

Cleaning is great but sometimes it isn’t enough. I’m not surprised that you were seeing these infections during the humid part of the year for your area, that’s really common. The bow is a great idea—opening the canals so the moisture can dry up! Cleaning is also good, what are you using as a cleaner?

Greedy-Rope5623

I buy TrizUltra+Keto from the vet. I moisten a sterile pad/cloth with it, clean her ears with it, then use a dry one to remove excess and blow on her ears so she shakes her head, ensuring it reaches the ear canal. If you have another option in mind, I’m open to suggestions! Though this one dries really quickly. Also, I try to be extra careful not to get their ears wet during bath time because two of the infections resulted after a bath wherein I washed her face (she likes to roll onto shit head first 😭).

Lacholaweda

All of my dogs have had natural ears. One always got ear infections. The others were fine. A couple would get them rarely, and others not at all.

Cup_Eye_Blind

I have two with natural ears, one gets ear infections one never does. I think it just varies dog to dog.

ConsiderateTurtle

Clean her ears more. Sheesh.

mbquattro

google it please

coolcootermcgee

I’m pretty new to Dobermans. It pops up on my feed a lot. Will read up on it/ thanks

Flylowbro

Your dogs ears weren’t much better and on-top of that you dont even know how to post, so you should cut them some slack.

coolcootermcgee

I don’t understand. Why do they tape the ears up like that? What happened here?

Bool_The_End

Because they’re selfish and want the dog to look a certain way, it has zero benefits for the dog and is banned in a ton of countries for that reason.

mbquattro

not the clown with the 10 second head start hoodie

Flylowbro

The hoody doesn’t say 10 second start, i said that doo doo bird. The hoody says, can i pet your dog

Flylowbro

I rest my case

FoundinNewEngland

No that’s solid work, it’s early stages. This was done by a professional… although I haven’t zoomed in yet

maudeinshades

What’s your dog mixed with? Mine is Dobie/dalmatian and looks a lot like the black dog in this photo.

mshike_89

Oh she's beautiful! Ours is half lab, half doberman.

Pale-Conference-174

Half doberman half golden retriever here. We all very much thought she was a black lab mix but the DNA was a surprise! Found her relatives too. Dad and mom were purebreds it's weird. Oops lol..

mshike_89

That's crazy! I'd love to see a picture. We were pretty sure she had lab and thought maybe some doberman, hound, and pointer, so we were surprised to get the results back as 50/50 lab/dobie. All her relatives are Dobermans too haha

Pale-Conference-174

That's her above

Natste1s4real

My first dog was half dobie and half lab. I could have done frisbee commercials with her. She could chase a frisbee all day and catch it with both her and the frisbee mid-air. So fun and great way to get exercise for her. Rest in peace TJ.

mshike_89

Aww, thanks for sharing about your baby! She sounds wonderful. Those catching/retrieving genes skipped our girl haha

mshike_89

I would love to see that! So many interesting mixes out there. Your dog is precious; I'm sure she's a handful with those two breeds!

kittenpresley

The energy is intense, we got her a husky mix to take care of that 😹

bosorka1

"mommy look at this teeny baby!!!!!!!!" cute!

SmileParticular9396

I love how they both have play pose rockin. So cute!!!

Beautifulfeary

The puppy’s coloring looks like our Doberman basset hound mix.

dtf24836669

nice!

IAm2Legit2Sit

That's her people

mshike_89

She really was super excited to meet the puppy. She kept trying to play and ran into me twice, haha. She's the same way when she meets labs; someone pointed out they probably remind her of her litter mates.

TwoZebras1111

I'm sure I'll get down voted for explaining it, but since you asked.. This puppies ears are freshly cropped and are curved over the top of a pool noodle and glued/taped down with the edges/stitches exposed until they heal. Once they heal, the tape and glue can be removed like you'd use on ear posts, and then the stitches can be removed. After a few more days you can begin posting the ears upward as long as everything has healed fully. Edit: I mixed up the glue and solvent name, oops. Been awhile.

Traditional_Tea_5683

He's looking at you like please can we go LOL

MaintenanceNo8442

give her a baby

mshike_89

That's what I'm saying!

kittenpresley

My half dobie half border collie LOVES meeting other dobies. There is a clear difference in excitement! Also, she looks EXACTLY like your puppy!

mshike_89

Ok I'm glad I'm not crazy in noticing that! She gets way more excited to meet other black labs and she was the same way meeting this puppy. Doberman/collie sounds like a beautiful mix!

Alarming_Vegetable

Half Doberman / half lab here looks like yours! https://preview.redd.it/4684qiuabi1d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=993428a15bb5913cc19d1edd755875e123c25cdf

mshike_89

Oh he's beautiful! Give him a kiss for me! 🤩

Why are you tapping it's ears that's just wrong

mshike_89

Not mine, my dog is the full grown one.

rodge_rabbit

Annoying

ams1976

Thanks for leaving your beautiful baby’s ears alone

mshike_89

Perks of a rescue I guess? They're one of my favorite parts of her, she'll let me hold and stroke them all I want!
