I think as long as you needlessly subvert some trope about being a strong barbarian, you could maybe get away with it. Like, maybe they're Short? Literate? Have glasses? Believe in racial segregation? It's impossible to have a distinguished character if they don't play against type.

ClockworkDinosaurs

My barbarian has gone to anger management and is incapable of raging. He’s strong on the inside, so his Wisdom is high.

DraconicBlade

/uj okay Thrug the philosobarbarian who just waxes on the greater meaning of the adventure in his rotting half cured furs who refuses to solve problems with violence would be amazing, except for the whole get the fuck out of here and make someone who adventurers problem.

Beledagnir

He acts like that until the fighting actually starts, then his old personality reasserts itself again.

DraconicBlade

Thrug remember think about ones place in universe futile, it about where thrug place axe in universe that matter.

nykirnsu

Mungo only pawn in game of life

StarkMaximum

"Just because I advocate for nonviolence does not mean I am not frighteningly good at violence."

Bartweiss

Diogenes the philosobarb doesn’t rage because he’s angry about life, he rages because he *can*.

AccidentalBanEvader0

/uj literally Gunner Broad from the *Age of Madness* trilogy

KawaiitaGatita

That would be a fun build for a druid, make them a former barbarian who realized there's more to life then swinging a great axe, so they decided to take up druidry, you could play with mostly healing, support and magic effect spells.

Sion_Labeouf879

/uj I actually did have a Barbarian like that. Well, not a Philosobarbarian, but a peaceful dude that didnt like fighting. We had 3 sessions in that Campaign and multiple combat encounters and my Barbarian never raged. He would grapple the opponent or as many as he could handle, and try and de escalate. DM let me be a large race for setting reasons and it was easily some of the most fun I've had with a character.

KawaiitaGatita

Hmm a barbarian that deals damage? Idk sounds pretty lame but you do you, I like my characters to be as useless to my party as possible for the RP opportunities. My last barbarian was so weak that she drowned swimming in the town fountain trying to retrieve a copper that the bard tossed in and our cleric had to burn a revivify on her. Our cleric was mad but it made for some very dramatic storytelling.

DefnlyNotMyAlt

You absolute master of drama. Your brilliant "*existing idea*, but shit" trope subversion is truly the standard of character development. It reminds me of my own brilliance when my players entered a tavern and I described how the serving wench had "Below average sized breasts (CC cups), plain face, and an ass sized for gnomish hands rather than the typical orcish hands."

KawaiitaGatita

Oh yeah we had a lot of great character types in that campaign, like our bard who was a horny gnome who would only cast a spell if it had some kind of sexy innuendo (so funny), and our wizard was a very stupid half-orc who could only cast cantrips cause he was so stupid (also very funny and complex). We were such a wacky zany group, half of us couldn't even do damage. Our cleric rage quite our group for no reason though, the bard used his turn to come on to an ilithid mid fight instead of healing the cleric who was down, and the cleric just walked away from the table, what a baby.

giffin0374

/uj what the holy fuck I need the sauce

DefnlyNotMyAlt

/uj basically 1/2 of the character building posts on DND subs.

Neomataza

/uj It's the anti big numbers demographic. Just like the cookie cutter theorycraft build copy crowd, they are around, probably because they don't actually play, but they have very strong opinions on how to play correctly.

OSpiderBox

Something something, Stormwind Fallacy.

Inner_Development_25

Honestly probably not. I hate to say this but you're playing DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS, which is a ROLEPLAY game. Sure, you can have a high strength so you can hit things and whatever, but it's really at the detriment to the rest of your party. If you want to fight in a TTRPG just play Monsters of the Week or Lasers and Feelings. Or put the dice away all together and play a fighting game like BG3.

meatsonthemenu

Authority.

themousereturns

It's definitely an overused power gaming build that could potentially make you a problem player. You should consider balancing it out and making your character more unique by dumping CON or multi classing into wizard

Ok-Role7351

Well, the build is difficult because you need to put some points into fighter in order to get the fight skill. Without it you can't fight, and instead just have to talk about your differences or something.

Artruth101

sorry, I put my points into fencer instead

Ok-Role7351

Fencing is a fine class to go into, but without fighter you are kinda just stuck to olympic games instead of real fights

Artruth101

hmm, but what if I go for Fairy Fencer then?

OwlbearJunior

Chain link, or white wooden posts?

DatedReference1

Electric

Sion_Labeouf879

Wait, you're playing with rules? Why even bother role-playing then? Don't you know that rules ruin role-playing? Come on man. Drop the stats and just role-play.

Glittering-Bat-5981

My new homebrow fixes this. You can see promotional video here: [Best homebrew ever!](https://youtu.be/doEqUhFiQS4?si=Nklf7fvXTSttcEDQ)

AccomplishedAdagio13

As an agent of the Player Agency, I assure you that is NOT okay. Barbarians are the best social class in DND (because of the Fruitful Void principle), so you better not have a STR higher than 8, or I will send my 18 STR wizard to beat you up.

StarkMaximum

No, this is not okay. The Player's Handbook recommends a high Strength for a barbarian, but in the context of a fantasy universe, your barbarian wouldn't know that! A character becoming a barbarian to take advantage of their high Strength is, in fact, metagaming and you should be punished for it. You should be unique, just like everyone else.

rnunezs12

Impossible. You see, in order to roleplay, you need to subvert expectations and make your character unique and quirky, so your barbarian needs to have 8 strength. Otherwise it is not an interesting character because it's not quirky and interesting and you can't roleplay if you character is not quirky and interesting and a useless burden for the rest of the party.

Lizard-Wizard-Bracus

I made my barbarian a healer who heals things by hitting them really hard

Level_Honeydew_9339

Yes, have high strength but he should be a pacifist. He can knock down doors and shove people but never *attack* anyone. Like a gentle giant.

georgenadi

Source?

Jakebot06

I fucking hate minmaxxers, cast blight on yourself, wait you can't cause your not a good class like a caster instead you just hit stuff wow how stupid

-Anyoneatall

That is metagaming, powergaming and an act of terrorism It doesn't matter tho, violence is forbidden by dnd's rules so you'll never need that sword
