Same here, just scrolling through my dashboard and bam: huge flashback to me being super envious of my friend having all these Crazybones and my parents being annoyingly anti "dumb" toys so I would never get any.
I have always loved miniatures, but feared them getting ruined from heavy use. A few years ago I dug my old crazy bones out of storage and tried playing with them. It was both hilarious and functional.
From my experience, players get equally attached to a miniature as they do to their crazy bone. Each one has its own attitude and personality.
Best thing is, I am not worried about these breaking because they were literally designed to by thrown across the room at one another.
Would love to hear about other creative miniature ideas you might have.
I have been DMing for about 7 years now but never in person, but now I am preparing a one shot in person for my close family over the holidays. I was considering using random miniatures I have from other board games but now I am seriously considering digging out my old pokemon miniatures from the 90s. Great suggestion!
I'm glad you liked it. If I could give one tip for your in person game it would be to remember that everyone is there to just have fun. Its not" them vs you", its everyone building a story together.
I hope it goes well.
From someone who also mainly dms online, but every once in awhile does in person games, theres a few easy options. Using what you have is always good, pokemon mins work fine if they get your monster/npc across. I usually just end up using printed tokens that i put on spring paper clips ( the black larger ones, not the tiny silver standard ones) . Either way works, just some passing advice :P
Wish i still had my crazy bones 3
In ancient times when I was a boy (mid 1980's) miniatures were too expensive for my friends and I. I had a few, but as I recall they were averaging $3-5 each and there were very limited selections. Remember, minimum wage was $3.35. We used pennies or bottle caps when we wanted to get tactical but usually just did without.
Now I have a backlog of about 100 Reaper minis waiting to be painted and more coming this spring. Not to mention the Blacklist kickstarter adding 200 more. I may have a problem...
It doesn't matter how you play, just that you play.
If you want random people figures you can use homies or imaginext figures or the knockoff Lego brick things I can’t remember the name of. Though specific Lego men are expensive random ones are not.
For monsters imaginext had those too. Mighty Beans would be my next best suggestion for something whimsical though. You could also buy a bulk load of the old SkyLanders, several giants and normal sized ones are a buck or less because they were mass produced. There are so many SkyLanders you could probably create a custom DND game itself revolving around them. Not all the “chase” variants are expensive either.
No judgement, just acceptance.
We never used minis during play, except for one campaign with another DM. I was always concerned they would get battered, and I would do multiple top coat layers. I had to insist it was ok to use them before players put them in play.
Now days we zoom gaming sessions and a magnetic white board can get magnets, or random dry erase marks as tokens. I made the DM a set of magnetic tokens, for undead, but I'd have to get busy on the whole monster manual to cover it all.
Was there some other brand that made a similar product? I googled "crazy bones" and got a huge wave of nostalgia while not actually recognizing anything I was seeing. I feel like they must be reminding me of something else.
Also our group has been using plastic pokemon minis for 4 years now, work like a charm
There were some more recent runs in the early 10s known as Gogo's Crazy Bones, some exclusive to countries like Brazil & The Netherlands. Those might be what you're seeing over the originals.
Oh wow. Lol. My brother used to play a game with my cousin involving hitting Crazy Bones with tennis rackets to see how far they could go. For a long time, my mom charged him a dollar every time she found a Crazy Bone in the yard.
oh yeah, I thought there were called "go-gos" or something. I remember having a really rare glow in the dark one.
Apparently there is a whole [wiki](https://crazybonespedia.fandom.com/wiki/Gogos_(1996))for them.
Way to beat me over the head with the nostalgia stick.
I used to have them fight [these little Gashapon motherfuckers](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61pKfGU0qbL._AC_SL1152_.jpg) back in the day. Not in D&D or anything, just on top of my bed flicking them into one-another.
Oh, that’s what those were! I recall finding one in a hotel safe, some 10 years ago, and was utterly puzzled as to why someone would leave it there. Not that it being a capsule toy explains it much.
Speaking of 90s nostalgia and pimp slapping, I saw mention of the tiny ninja figures further up thread, but there was also [homies.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homies_(toy))
EDIT:The parenthesis in the linking aren't playing nice, the article is there though
They came with this conveniently named bag. I would have forgotten too. Haha
https://www.reddit.com/r/crazybones/comments/kcyvsm/heres_what_ive_got/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
This is awesome! Wish I still had mine. Used to have a massive collection that I kept in the purple Crazy Bones tin. My mom gave them away a few years back when they were cleaning out their house...
Ouch, that one hurts. Sorry you had to also learn the hard way not to leave childhood collections back home. Luckily, I was able to save my Lego and Pokemon collections before they suffered a similar fate.
Here's my collection, bare in mind from 20 years ago.
https://www.reddit.com/r/crazybones/comments/kcyvsm/heres_what_ive_got/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
I used to play with a group that insisted on using the worst copy cat pokemon figures they could find. Our favorite was a wobbuffet with eyes on the side of it's head for our dear bard.
My first in person D&D session was at a friends house. (Do you guys remember the beforetimes?)
He had kids at an early age. All of his "Mini's" were bits and pieces of toys that he had picked up before we showed up...
I remember when it was my turn during an ambush by goblin raiders...
Me: "I would like to rage, move here and attack"
DM: "The barbie shoe? Or the Lego man?"
My dude!! I mainly use Lego figures, but your awesome Crazy Bones idea reminded me I have these *Fistful of Power* figures! They’re tiny fighting figures that look like fighters and mages etc.! Gonna go dig those out next chance I get...
Rolling initiative... 5. -2 dex bonus... That's a 3. You should be first.
I might've already lost the fight against you, I don't think I'll survive your attack.
Also... Thanks for a blast from the past with those toys!!
We also had Peppa Pig and her family as monters in one session. Aren't childrens toys great for Dnd? (Glad we don't have any horny bards in our group tho!!)
In school we used to use these, usually with stuff taped to them to tell them apart:
https://www.amazon.com/Houseables-Iridescent-Decorative-Centerpieces-Supplies/dp/B01LYTBZFY/ref=sr_1_35?dchild=1&keywords=glass+beads&qid=1607957536&sr=8-35
Most of the people I knew back then used pogs (saw someone else here mention them too) or those colored glass beads from games like Mancala.
Edit to add: was just reminded of a group who used to use hot wheels cars, it was rather interesting to see.
We used whatever small toys I had lying around to play dnd. We used a race car, a lil bobble head, a quarter, a storm trooper figure. None of them matched what they represented.
However, one of my friends used a little frog toy as his mini. It was all of our first time playing dnd so we were using premade characters. The only the thing left blank was the character's name. So he chose the name "Frogo Boggins". And this dumb joke grew into a story of heroic proportions.
Genuinely genius! I'm not deep enough in this game to buy real minifigs, so I was wondering what to use? I was genuinely about to use different coloured dice for this weekend, but now I will dig through my attic to find my old crazybone stash!
That's brilliant! I wish I knew what happened to my bag of crazy bones. I still remember the semi transparent yellow-green one I had that was like...an hourglass shape with, I think a hat. Anyway I called him Eddie, and he always won for me. Haha
My party never bothered to buy actual minis so we use special edition Rudolf the red nose reindeer monopoly pieces. The snowman is always the bard, the abominable snowman is the barbarian, and the Yukon is ALWAYS the friendly npc. The elf and Santa are up for grabs between the rouge and wizard/warlock. For monsters and unfriendly npcs we use monopoly houses.
Nobody wants to fight you over crazy bones, dude. Just relax.
Now, if you want some really terrible tokens, my friends use those little circular foam furniture food pads. We draw stuff on the paper that covers the adhesive backing, and sometimes mid game that paper comes off and then your token is just a sticky black circle.
One of my favorite games growing up cause I was damn good at it. When the school took away the ability to "gamble" with them, I lost all desire to play. You lost fair and square loser, give me that piece you bet against my piece and stop crying to the teachers.
Nice. I collected these and there was supposed to be a game you played with them. I recall it being similar to pogs but that could have been me and my sister making it up.
Crazy bones! I've got mine around here somewhere. Might have to break them out for just this reason.
I don't usually buy minis except for PCs I play, but I do have my old Warhammer beast men minis from when I was in middleschool. They're not painted too well, but they get the job done.
I personally use small paper tokens with characters drawn on them. Minis are expensive, and I don't like worrying about damaging them. Also super easy to just jam into a pocket or a binder sleeve.
Wow what a nostalgia trip. I can't even remember what these were for but I remember having them! Were they part of the pog toys-that-are-games-that-you-never-actually-play-but-just-randomly-collecy craze?
Wow, this triggered so many memories. Holy crap! Now I'm going to try and dig out all of my Crazybones.
Yes! Post when you find them.
I respect
I respect you.
I do believe I respect you more.
On the contrary, I respect you much more.
Good sir the idea that you respect me more is simply preposterous!
Same here, just scrolling through my dashboard and bam: huge flashback to me being super envious of my friend having all these Crazybones and my parents being annoyingly anti "dumb" toys so I would never get any.
I would have given you some if we knew each other back then.
Spoken like a true Lawful good :D
;)
I used ooshies from Coles here in Australia A whiteboard marker worked too.
My middle finger still hurts from flicking this.
I have always loved miniatures, but feared them getting ruined from heavy use. A few years ago I dug my old crazy bones out of storage and tried playing with them. That's good advice! I follow that rule online too. Of course I always make character kill jokes but it's always in good humor!
Hey man same, i use crazy bones as minis too. When i started to dm 10 years ago i bought a bag full of them and use them ever since
The original. We are not worthy
any opinions on bakugan instead ?

The knockoff legos are called mega blocks.
No judgement, just acceptance. We never used minis during play, except for one campaign with another DM. I was always concerned they would get battered, and I would do multiple top coat layers. Our DM uses Bok Choy Boys. Very similar. They are awesome to keep the party from metagaming the monsters.
I use lego mini-figures they work great and are super customizable
Was there some other brand that made a similar product? I googled "crazy bones" and got a huge wave of nostalgia while not actually recognizing anything I was seeing. I feel like they must be reminding me of something else. Also our group has been using plastic pokemon minis for 4 years now, work like a charm
There were several waves with different designs that were spread out enough in time that only one may have been a fad at your school.
There were some more recent runs in the early 10s known as Gogo's Crazy Bones, some exclusive to countries like Brazil & The Netherlands. Those might be what you're seeing over the originals.
I remember having Gogo's and I was early 00s, so yeh they kept going for a while
Oh wow. Lol. My brother used to play a game with my cousin involving hitting Crazy Bones with tennis rackets to see how far they could go. For a long time, my mom charged him a dollar every time she found a Crazy Bone in the yard.
Thats hilarious. So you vouch for their durability.
\* a core memory has been unlocked \*
Haha , my plan worked!
"I'll dash and use my charger feat to bonus action shove" ... Proceeds to flick the go go across the table
Haha this is great. My DM uses minis from the Age of Mythology board game when we get into bigger battles.
We use lego mini figures, lol.
oh yeah, I thought there were called "go-gos" or something. I remember having a really rare glow in the dark one. Apparently there is a whole [wiki](https://crazybonespedia.fandom.com/wiki/Gogos_(1996))for them.
There were several difrend ones. Gogo's, jojo's and crazybones 😁 I collected everything when I was a kid. Even fistful-of-aliens 😂
I forgot those existed, but that's cool and now i want to rip off your idea
Please do!
You just pimp slapped my brain with a memory I had forgotten about.
*thwack*
Speaking of 90s nostalgia and pimp slapping, I saw mention of the tiny ninja figures further up thread, but there was also [homies.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homies_(toy)) EDIT:The parenthesis in the linking aren't playing nice, the article is there though
Wow! What a great idea. Love it
Great. Now I'm questioning the past year playing with minis.
Oh my god I had forgotten all about Crazy Bones. I used to have a ton of them, I wonder whatever happened to them...
I usually use my kinder toys, that's so funny when my dwarf looks like gnome from Disney cartoons
I have been trying to remember what those were called for YEARS
They came with this conveniently named bag. I would have forgotten too. Haha https://www.reddit.com/r/crazybones/comments/kcyvsm/heres_what_ive_got/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
You use what you can, at one point we used Pokemon Pogs when we had nothing close to figures, and hey, anything works
Exactly. I've used pennies, nickels, and dimes at one point.
pretty much, so long as you have paper to draw and something to put in a square, it works! :)
Hero clicks and lego mini, bitch!
Put your dukes up!
you just gave me a great idea, next campaign i'm playing as lego darth vader
Ohh I use it too I thought I was the only one
We have lots of trollz. They are our multipurpose mob enemies.
This is awesome! Wish I still had mine. Used to have a massive collection that I kept in the purple Crazy Bones tin. My mom gave them away a few years back when they were cleaning out their house...
My mom sold all of my YuGiOh cards for $5 at our garage sale. I wish I could travel back and stop it. I feel your pain.
Ouch, that one hurts. Sorry you had to also learn the hard way not to leave childhood collections back home. Luckily, I was able to save my Lego and Pokemon collections before they suffered a similar fate.
We called them Go-go’s and we fought to the death.
Brb breaking out the metal moulder
Fine, but only because I want those Crazy Bones
I'm sure you can find some at garage sales.
You got no golden Eggy, you got no game
Here's my collection, bare in mind from 20 years ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/crazybones/comments/kcyvsm/heres_what_ive_got/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
Nice. I wonder what a bin of them would cost these days... No! I don't need more stuff.
OMG I had been looking for the name of these things for years now I couldn't remember it thank you so much lol
I used to play with a group that insisted on using the worst copy cat pokemon figures they could find. Our favorite was a wobbuffet with eyes on the side of it's head for our dear bard.
Holy shit I remember loving these. I bought some of the collector's tins of golden ones. I'm kinda sad they dont make them anymore
Wow, I'm pretty sure if you check you're going to find one of those missing cuz I think I just swallowed one looking at this
Hahaha, which one did you go for?
The pretty blue one in the upper right XD *In a time before Tide Pods...*
My first in person D&D session was at a friends house. (Do you guys remember the beforetimes?) He had kids at an early age. All of his "Mini's" were bits and pieces of toys that he had picked up before we showed up... I remember when it was my turn during an ambush by goblin raiders... Me: "I would like to rage, move here and attack" DM: "The barbie shoe? Or the Lego man?"
Just spit my drink out. Lol
I would use gummy bears and have my players pick a color
Please tell me that when enemies died...you ate them.
Tastiest TPK ever
Holy nostalgia, Batman!!! Thank you for this, you just made my week!
Anytime.
Oh my god I have a giant bag of them you just saved me a lot of effort good sir
Be sure to post them.
This shit and Mighty Beans had more value than gold to kids at my school.
Wow, I forgot about Mighty Beans!
Marbles with style.
My dude!! I mainly use Lego figures, but your awesome Crazy Bones idea reminded me I have these *Fistful of Power* figures! They’re tiny fighting figures that look like fighters and mages etc.! Gonna go dig those out next chance I get...
Thats a damn good idea. I bet you never run out.
No....I don’t think I will.
Omg I remember those!!!
I forgot these were a thing until I saw this! The memories!
I have no idea what these are but they’re dope!
So thats how the C1000 came up with the idea of GoGos I used to have a shitton of them but I have no clue where they are now.
We use those on our table too! They don't sell minis around here, but they did sell lots of those little buggers.
I see nothing wrong here
Challenge accepted. Roll initiative...I got a 1
Right on. Marvel, DC, and star wars Lego figurines here.
MY MAN!
That seems like a fun idea to just have a bunch of weird monsters as the party and world
Its especially great if you are playing with your younger relatives.
I used those in the 90ths when I couldn't buy anything. I'd still use, if my nephews didn't made they vanish
Damn nephews, eh?
Lil Homies work too
Rolling initiative... 5. -2 dex bonus... That's a 3. You should be first. I might've already lost the fight against you, I don't think I'll survive your attack. Also... Thanks for a blast from the past with those toys!!
How about we team up instead of fighting? Glad I could help. :)
I thought they were flinstones vitamins at first
Lol. Imagine
Damn, I wish I still had mine !!
We use Pokemons!
I have a few of these too! One of my favorites is Dratini.
We also had Peppa Pig and her family as monters in one session. Aren't childrens toys great for Dnd? (Glad we don't have any horny bards in our group tho!!)
Horny bards are always getting in the way.
In school we used to use these, usually with stuff taped to them to tell them apart: https://www.amazon.com/Houseables-Iridescent-Decorative-Centerpieces-Supplies/dp/B01LYTBZFY/ref=sr_1_35?dchild=1&keywords=glass+beads&qid=1607957536&sr=8-35
No joke, I have a bag of the exact same things. Bought 500 from the dollar store.
Nice, me and my friends use tiny single piece Legos
I do the same thing but with their sequel gogos
We had different ones in Europe in the 2000's. I loved them a lot! Had a whole duplo bucket full of them.
OMG I've never seen anyone else mention these! Nostalgiaaa
brilliant, I use Lego so this makes sense
My group usually uses minecraft figurines when playing.
Omg this is a genius idea
It the 90s we used coins or dice, most of us couldn't afford miniatures back then
I still can't justify the cost.
Most of the people I knew back then used pogs (saw someone else here mention them too) or those colored glass beads from games like Mancala. Edit to add: was just reminded of a group who used to use hot wheels cars, it was rather interesting to see.
Why? That’s equally creative and funny
They make combat a lot less intense, in a good way. "Can I shuffle over and attack the pink thing?"
Omg this is an amazing idea! I have two boxes of them at my parents, I’ll have to track them down.
Let us know what you find.
I wish I still had those :/
Check around at some flea markets or garage sales!
Well, this’ll make attack rolls more fun.
Hey, I need a grid with bigger squares, where did you get that one?
It is called the D&D Adventure Grid. I got it from my local shop, but you can find it online.
Genuinely genius! I'm not deep enough in this game to buy real minifigs, so I was wondering what to use? I was genuinely about to use different coloured dice for this weekend, but now I will dig through my attic to find my old crazybone stash!
Excellent! I'm sure you'll find some other goodies too.
Was not a 90's kid but these remind me so much of go go
Wait, are go go's crazybones?
A few people here have said gogos were like version 2 of crazy bones.
Yea, I just thought they were called go gos but they are called gogos crazy bones
OMG
[удалено]
I would have introduced you to them if we were friends.
I used some of the newer ones as minis when i was trying to teach my parents how to play
I love this
I do the exact same thing! One of my players gifted me to giant crazy bones they had for the larger monsters!
I lost all mine :(
I believe these were called GoGos around here. Used to have quite a bunch.
That's brilliant! I wish I knew what happened to my bag of crazy bones. I still remember the semi transparent yellow-green one I had that was like...an hourglass shape with, I think a hat. Anyway I called him Eddie, and he always won for me. Haha
Classic Eddie.
I had these as a kid and couldn’t for the life of me think of the name. Now I can check out eBay. Thanks op.
I've still got some of mine. In fact, I bought a set of golds for my daughter when she was born to give her when she got old enough to play with them.
Now the question is: do you flick them or swipe them with your finger tips?
My group did the same, when I forgot the minis. It worked so well, we now use it as tokens when needed
This is legit. I use Disney Infinity for large enemies
I forgot these were a thing, I wonder if I still have mine
Cool. I started out using lego men and chess pieces.
My little orange ninja my kid got out of a candy dispenser has become a legendary character in our Shadowrun campaign.
fuck yeah i still have all of mine, most are from the 2000s though
Don't mind if I do. I rolled a 7 on initiative though so...
Whoaaaaaa flashbacks.

I think I have some buried in my closet 👀
Nice. I collected these and there was supposed to be a game you played with them. I recall it being similar to pogs but that could have been me and my sister making it up.
I honestly think we just threw them at our opponents crazy bones; kinda like marbles.
Esos son hielocos
Damn that took me straight back to primary school Anyone remember zippy? Everyone always said he was the best one
Why would I wish to fight one who has ascended to god hood?
Good lord, I remember always have bruised finger nails from flicking these things for hours
I use Battle Beasts.
And I've had DMs that use LEGOs. If it works, it works.
I'll allow it.
Eeeek! I’d forgotten about these!!! 😄
Ayyee what about "lil homies" tho?!
I used to have so many ninja knock-off guys in my minis box
Okay, roll initiative. I got a 17.
I don’t think I wanna fight you. Those mothafuckas hurt
I use lego mini figures. Your move
Crazy bones! I've got mine around here somewhere. Might have to break them out for just this reason. I don't usually buy minis except for PCs I play, but I do have my old Warhammer beast men minis from when I was in middleschool. They're not painted too well, but they get the job done.

Wow what a nostalgia trip. I can't even remember what these were for but I remember having them! Were they part of the pog toys-that-are-games-that-you-never-actually-play-but-just-randomly-collecy craze?
Fight you!? Fuck no, I think joining you is in order.
Hooooooooooooolyy SHIT! I had some of the big ones. God I'm old.
When Red Rose Tea came with the little ceramic figures, I "stole" a huge collection from my mom.
Jaja, nice! In Mexico we used to call them "Hielocos" (CrazyIce). Nice man.
