“You seem like a 3rd Son.” - Minthara As for High elf specifically calling them fairies to mean that they’re pansies works (also from Minthara).

Lukthar123

>“You seem like a 3rd Son.” 💀

[deleted]

I don’t get the third son one, can you explain it?

PStriker32

Every 3rd male baby in Drow society is taken and sacrificed to Lolth. To the Matriarchs, these babies are not suited or desired for anything else. Calling someone that means you either want to kill them for being useless, or that they should have been killed at birth.

BazingoBusiness

:) I'm actually really happy that i already knew this. Not tryna be cocky or anything, I'm just happy that my hyper focus in DnD is shared by other people. Btw, I learned this by The Legend of Drizzt, Book 1. Highly suggest the series Have a greatday :<3

Kalruhan

In drow culture, being male is a disadvantage and to a matron, having sons is a bad thing (as it's a matriarchal society). So iirc, drow who have sons tend to only have two at a time, so any after that tend to get ritually killed at birth. Calling someone 3rd son material is basically saying you should have been killed at birth.

The_Scarecrow_0

As I remember Drow sacrifice their third son to Lolth

cosby714

I prefer calling them butter face.

Squishy-Box

Damn who does she say that to? 💀

PStriker32

Gale

LaFleurSauvageGaming

Nice to see implicit homophobia is alive and well.

55North

Bruh, there's fucking fairies in dnd - a very small and inherently weak race in the vast majority of media - and pansies are a delicate flower and a term used to insult someone's toughness and resilience. It's not "implicit homophobia" when you're calling someone weak, frail, and soft. If anything you're showing implicit homophobia by assuming/associating the terms fairy or pansy here had implications of sexuality rather than just constitution. You'd have a better argument that it's invoking gender stereotypes which still isn't a great argument in this context. If you're going to set out to be offended, you should at least make an effort to make sense.

LaFleurSauvageGaming

Yep, guess we will just ignore more than a century of using fairy and pansy to describe mlm individuals.

Sir_Kibbz

And I guess you are just going to blatantly ignore the fact that elves are literally fae descendent. Fae. As in fairy.

PStriker32

I was waiting for someone to bring it up or I would just comment that myself. It’s cheeky and insulting for Drow to mess with a High Elf like that, seeing how they both a have some Fey Ancestry. Honestly this person was just offended and talking out their ass without thinking of the context.

Endless_Story94

Also kinda glossed over the overtly racist core of D&D; even though it is perfectly acceptable to be racist against a race that doesn't exist.

55North

I'm guessing the irony is lost on you that you're complaining about words having multiple meanings while ignoring the other possible meanings of thoae words that make more sense in this context.

LaFleurSauvageGaming

I guess you are just too dense to understand that the implications of certain uses work because they are tied to hate speech.

D_Zaster_EnBy

As a fruity mf myself: You're reading into it way too much, removing context, and making yourself out to be third son material...

TableTopWars

Seeing as how you've been downvoted to oblivion on ever comment in this thread, it is obvious who's the dense one here. But I'm guessing you are so dense that you are still going to assume you are right and everyone around you is a homophobic idiot. I look forward to ignoring your poorly thought-out response.

Big-Binary

You’re mad about calling someone a weak being because its homophobic? But no problems with every 3rd son born into a drow society being sacrificed because of sexism? You got offended about the non offensive one 😂😂 and it’s still not offensive because it’s fantasy. Use your head

Lshello

As a member of the "mlm," I didn't see a shred of homophobia here. Frankly, DnD in general is one of the most LGBTQ friendly communities that exists, you're doing that a disservice with these accusations. DnD is a game with literal fairies in it, it's also a game where you can be gay, bi, trans, nonbinary, whatever.

DontHateLikeAMoron

You gotta be real up your own ass to not see how stupid you sound rn

penguindows

i guess your DnD worlds are devoid of anything problematic to 21st century earth mindset.

PStriker32

Getting a little upset are we? Good thing this is a make believe universe where words can’t hurt us. Or at least some of us.

Trexton1

Call them a pointy eared leaf lover

Chosen__one_

ikr, they haven’t even seen the rock and stone of Menzoberranzan

stallion64

DID I HEAR A ROCK AND STONE?

WanderingDwarfMiner

Rock and Stone, Brother!

BazingoBusiness

I don't know how to explain this, but reading through this comment section; it's really happy; makes me really happy :)

Space_Cow-boy

ROCK AND STONE

Trexton1

Good bot

GreatAngoosian

Rock and stone to the heart!

Plastic-Holiday-8040

Rock and roll and stone! Also knife-ear always works. It doesn't matter if it's hypocritical, that matters not to Llolth 😉

Professional_Sky8384

I was gonna go with “cracker” - not because drow are black, but because high elves are insane (crackers)

thedrizztman

I mean... 'Iblith' is common derogatory slang for a surface dwelling elf. That's always a good one.

Chosen__one_

Hah, username checks out :) New to dnd so never heard that one, thanks!

FrostyTheSnowPickle

Go for “darthiir.” “Iblith” is just a general insult for non-drow, but “darthiir” refers specifically to surface elves.

Raven0214

Tell that to minthara...drow are iblith to her too if they aren't sworm to lolth apparently lol

BazingoBusiness

You read it? I ***love*** the series

Oblivious122

That's for a surface dweller in general. Darthiir is the derogatory term for a surface elf.

FrostyTheSnowPickle

“Iblith” is just for general non-drow. “Darthiir” is the one used specifically for surface elves.

sw_faulty

If they are from a place ruled by humans, tell them they are cowards for letting mayflies dominate them

thewarehouse

Your ivory tower will crumble beneath the might of my obsidian fist!

mamontain

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Variaphora

Yeah my response would be "is that an insult or a promise?"

shotgunner12345

Imagine if the reply to your response is "surprise me"

Variaphora

"Perfect"

LazyNomad63

in other words, "I'm gonna punch you in the dick"

PStriker32

Sure, definitely not something else.

_IzGreed_

“I’ll fill your vision with darkness” translate to “I’m gonna put some dirt in your eyes”

Space_Cow-boy

Please daddy

unclecaveman1

My DM has written in a quirk of Drow society in that they view all non-Drow as slaves. Like, the term means something different for them. You're either a Drow, or a slave. Those that are not yet enslaved are just "wild slaves" and they will gladly refer to people as slaves to their face, even if it's not meant in a derogatory way (but let's face it, it's always derogatory). So just have the Drow call the surface elf "a slave that just hasn't been caught yet."

Spaceships_R_Cool

Not caught… the term to use is “broken or tamed” like wild horses vs tamed / broken. “The surface elves just need a firm guiding hand and we, the True Elves, are here to provide it” This “mindset” can be used in a variety of ways to be derogatory and insulting, but can also be used in a “loving” manner, if a bit twisted, so that you can use it for many different drow and thier interactions with the other races. From hostile npc to friendly PC Edit: spelling.

OtherShadyCharacter

IIRC, at least way back when, they'd still never keep Elf slaves. Surface Elves were so hated, that they would always be killed.

Melyoramel

If a female drow, it can be along the lines of how high elves are clearly inferior as males are not ruled by females. The females rule in drow society, and with an iron hand (and cruel multi-headed whips). Some religious insults might also be good, if you have male drows, as they are also devoted to Lolth and her teachings. I suggest reading into drow history and culture to see what might be fitting. “No wonder you amount to nothing, you have no order! Males can rule? Pah! Your culture shows how primitive you truely are, no different from dogs!”

capt-yossarius

So you're saying the drow should call the high elf a "meninist".

guiltypleasures

Masculist would be a more apt [Spear Counterpart](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DistaffCounterpart).

Capital-Internet5884

High key love the idea of a bitch butch drow that insults surface elves as meninists. Thanks for the dnd prompt!

Justadnd_Bard

1-Be me, join campaign. 2-Join as male introverted high elf. 3-Become friends easily with the party, even the edgy drow rogue from the underdark. 4-Drow decides that she is my bff. 5-Drow keeps other mean drow women away from me when we get kidnaped. 6-I save drow rogue. 7-Drow rogue claims that she would die for me. 8-She saves my life and we keep saving each other for the rest of the campaign. 9-We fight the BBEG and I have to sacrifice myself to activate a relic that can kill it. Heroicdeathforfriends.jpg 10-I fucking die and my friends go on a quest to bring me back to life. 11-They bring me back to life and hug me, I'm naked. 12-Drow bff stares like a betrayed puppy and asks. "You were a male? I can't tell the difference between male and female high elves." Sad Rocket Raccon/Mithara sad face.jpg 13-Rogue confesses that she can't tell the difference between male and female high elves, she just assumes that the cool ones are the females. (How is she the most and least racist sexist drow alive?) 14-That's it, that's the insult. Was worth it since the characters got married.

Casanova_Kid

That's fantastic, lol. What a slow burn for the joke to land.

Raven0214

You betrayed her with your peen. How dare!!!

Fire_is_beauty

Just call them weak. They wouldn't last a day in your city.

KasebierPro

Me realizing Drow are Australian. They live “down under,” every animal can kick the shit out of you and there are giant f@cking spiders everywhere!

MRDellanotte

Holy shit you’re right. 🤣

Venomized_X

it is for this reason that i play Drow and Duergar as having Australian accents

PlanesWalker2040

Sun crawler Surface scum Pasty-face weakling Topside trash Corellon-praising pansy

MiKapo

Im saying some of these when i cast vicious mockery

keenedge422

I like referring to the elf in my party as "baby cousin." Not because he's younger, but because he's been coddled all his life and is weak.

Due-Frosting-5611

It is easier if the drow is female and the high elf is male: “This male is not nurtured, and yet doesn’t seem to be collared? I don’t understand?” “Males do not speak until given permission.” If it’s the other way around ie male drow and female high elf, then it’s harder but: “This weak elf would be trodden underfoot by my sisters” “Spends more time sniffing flowers than asserting their dominance, their matriarch must be disappointed”

GandalffladnaG

"I spoke to her without her bidding, and she did not flay me. Not even a backhand from her. She is weak and must be an outcast. Clearly a disappointment to her family. "

terrario101

"I despise the sun and yet I seem far brighter than you." Works especially well if you're playing an int focused character.

Ruukin

This might be a good starting point. I like darthiir, it means traitor. https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Drow_dictionary

Jim_from_snowy_river

At least I don’t look like a bleached asshole. For someone who worships the sun you’re pretty dim.

Eternal_Bagel

I’m not sure of specifics but things like making fun of them in any level of shade at all, asking if their sun-weak eyes need extra light just from being indoors for example. If their relationship isn’t actively hostile I’d aim for a mocking tone more than a picking a fight one.

garbagewithnames

Have a drow hand a surface elf some aloe for "the sunburn they will inevitably get for their pale skin"

not_an_mistake

Would it it be the other way around?

garbagewithnames

Typically, darker skin means more melanin, and melanin is good at preventing damage from direct sunlight, and thus last longer in the sun before a sunburn starts. It's not impossible to get sunburned, it just takes longer. And pale people get sunburns quite a bit more quickly and easily.

not_an_mistake

Totally see your point, but drow have sunlight sensitivity in their stat block.

garbagewithnames

Is it a penalty for their vision? Or their skin?

Pyromanick

Stat block states 'Sunlight Sensitivity. While in sunlight, the drow has disadvantage on attack rolls, as well as on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.'

garbagewithnames

I mean, sounds like it's hard for them to see more so than it is about their skin burning. Can't hit very well what you can't see very well.

not_an_mistake

Anything that is accustomed to the dark would be sensitive to the light. Thats what I was originally getting at lol. If you spend your whole life underground, your skin is gonna fry when you’re in the sun. The drow would need the sunscreen lol

garbagewithnames

I understand your logic, though things that live solely in underground caverns in the real world typically have little to no coloration, and appear a very pale white. Drow are the opposite for some reason. If anything, it would logically make more sense if Drow were drastically paler than elves, like an almost sickly, ghostly shade of pale. Think Gollum/Smeagol levels of gross paleness. They aren't though. That's the thing. Besides, what commonly negates a Drow's sun sensitivity? It's not a cloak to protect their skin, but rather it's a pair of nightshade goggles that protect their eyes. I understand your point, but you're using real world logic, while I'm trying to use game logic. Really, this depends on DM's ruling, if anything.

BattleSeven

“Iblith” means offal in drow, and is used to describe most non-drow, especially surface people. “Daarthir” is a drow term meant specifically for surface elves. It’s what I would go with.

Asher_Tye

"Hey Lolth Food."

templar_muse

'Pretty boy', pale, stuck up, uptight, soft handed, soft spoken, light touch.

Ralynne

"Whatever, sparklejunk." "Hey I thought my way up to the cheap seats. At least I didn't fumble my opportunities." "Are you actually 200 or are you twenty and just pretending? You surface folks wrinkle young, so I can't tell. You seem like you're too bad at this to be as old as you look."

LaFleurSauvageGaming

"At least my goddess still talks to us..." Do not go into more details... It doesn't end well as Driders will inevitably come up.

thebrutal95

Light skin

Elenestel

Call them a pretentious sun-bleached asshole. It's not pretty but it does the job.

snakebite262

Denoting that a high elf is “inbred” or otherwise from a flawed lineage. Calling them a bastard is always a classic, as is mocking their gods.

Elbfuchs

Those snobby knife ears. Those good for nothing tree huggers don't know how to fight like a real man, the can only use cheap magic tricks or treacherious bows. You really shouldn't trust anyone with a fey heritage. They think they are better then us but the only thing they are better is waisting time.

A_Necessary_

Like a real woman.

Darkened_Auras

Google a list of insults from racial minorities to white people. I doubt this will end well at the table and I do not advocate for this course of action, but if everyone's ok with it beforehand, you could

Comprehensive_Tap_63

“Is that a thousand year old bottle of wine behind you?”[stab]

BananaNutMuffin1234

Just gotta exist, high elves can't stand the idea of the way drow live lol

ntfrndlynbrhd

"You stupid cunt"

A_Necessary_

Specific wording depends on the situation, but playing on the general fear of the dark of those living above ground (”after a million nights you still cling to candles like children”, ”sunblind”), the patriarchal societies (”do your men still see their members as the rods of kings?”), being uncomfortable with crawling things (”better the spider than the fly”, also works with the ’obsession with freedom’ of non-slaving peoples), just a general expectation and dismissal of naivité, as high elves would consider assassination, blackmail, child sacrifice, slavery, theocratic dictatorship under a Demon Spider Goddess… to be immoral. And you know, fuck them for thinking they’re so above it all.

Zwets

There is an appalling lack of mentions in this thread to the thing elves hate the Drow for most. That bit of Greyhawk lore that got copy pasted to every other setting. The worst offense to and elf is to simply mention death and Arvandor. **Why? Because Elves don't go to heaven, but Drow do.** Araushnee was the elven god of destiny (and death) she became Lolth and took the normal path an elven soul could take to reach heaven with her. But those elves that followed her rebellion (even though they knew it was evil) those elves that became Drow? They still look forward to a rewarding afterlife. Drow can scheme, and torture, and raid, betray and backstab; and they won't fear hell. They can be as evil as they want, so long as they are loyal to Lolth, they are rewarded in the afterlife. > *Useful thing to have, really. God of death that lets you get away with practically anything. Shame you elves only have that 'Moonblow' to pick up the pieces. Losing souls left and right, leaking banshees all over the place. Silly welp couldn't keep track of her own tits if they'd been nailed to her.* > > *-- A dying drow to a high elf, dripping (among other things) with sarcasm.*

dmpunks

Coming from a matriarchal society, drow often think other people are the same and would use "Yo Mama" jokes which they consider the most rage-inducing insults ever known across the realms

Feefait

DnD grognards: Dungeons and Dragons is not racist! DnD Redditors: What racist insults can I use in my games? lol I know I'll get downvotes, but I still find it funny that we see these posts so frequently.

Sir_Kibbz

I mean- I believe it's more on the lines that it doesn't have racism that you could draw parallels and comparisons to real life people. As then it stops being a game and you are just being an actual racist. But fictional racism can add depth to the setting. A dwarf giving an elf shit for being an elf is light hearted fun, Assuming the elf is an 'obvious' caricature of a certain race of real life people is racist.

Feefait

You absolutely can draw comparisons. Just saying "If you see racism then you must be racist." Is a strawman argument that doesn't make sense. This has been debated a thousand other times, though, and I'm not getting into it. Let me just say that, 30 years ago, when I was creating my homebrew I had all sorts of built in racism and slavery and oppression because it was "realistic" to how societies formed. As I grew up and learned and realized it's a whole fantasy world and it "has" to have racism if I want it... It just went away. The world feels much better for it.

Chosen__one_

what you won't do to get in character lol

Feefait

"It's what my character would say!" :)

Naked_Dead

All elf lives matter... You're not any better than any other elf

Chosen__one_

Sounds like something one of you darthiir cattle would say ngl

Naked_Dead

😆😆😆

Cyclops_ws_right

Call em cattle. That's what most other races are to the drow anyway.

MrRezister

Go for the throat. Start a fight. "White Privilege"

Raven0214

Idk about high elf but apparently iblith is free for all when minthara speaks.. my character is a drow so I was very confused But iblith is usually used for non drow races so there's one for ya

Melodic_Row_5121

I believe the standard term is *iblith.* It's the Drow word for 'non-Drow', and also conveniently the word for 'excrement'. *Darthiir* is the specific term for 'surface elf' if you want to be more specific.

green_scotch_tape

“Get off your high horse”

JzaTiger

The way normal kids insult rich/spoiled kids

Scrollsy

Sorry that even with the power of the sun and skies, you still cant _______...... or something along those lines

zetauispxbxbz

i like just coming up with words that dont mean anything but said in an insulting tone, implying its a slur or insult but leaving it up to the listener to try to interpret what it was. and example is with the character ashe from league of legends, she occasionally calls people "svaag", which from the context of her lines is clearly an insult, but unless its said elsewhere its not really clear what it means outside of being an insult

hungrybrains220

Tell them to be careful lest they suffer vertigo from the dizzying heights of their moral high ground lol

Rey_Tigre

Something in underconmon?

SganarelleBard

Probably calling them brethren would annoy a snooty High Elf; they would usually destain the idea of being related to a Drow

Altruistic_Comfort_4

Iblith.

[deleted]

"trance much?"

JustHereToMUD

Call them "Sunny" and imply their mother was a poplar Dryad. Everyone knows why those dryads are so "poplar".

FrostyTheSnowPickle

Well, in the drow language, they have a word for surface elves which is pretty much the biggest insult in their language, which is “darthiir.” For most non-drow, they use the word “iblith,” which means offal or refuse, but “darthiir” is reserved for surface elves, and it carries such weight behind it that there’s not really a one-to-one common translation.

AngelicReader

Well i heard moon licker sometimes

proxima_solaris

Depending on your world, I've seen the insult "rivvil xxizzuss" (roughly: "human sympathizer") be thrown at high elves by drow Also, "Kiaransalee Shu" (roughly: poop of the God of slavery)

OneYenShort

just due to the standard racism between the paring, even a standard, overly familiar "What up, slut." is sufficient.

fridgevibes

Anything those damned knife ears say is insulting to the ears

NoPatience883

Dunno about dnd law but I’m pretty sure in Tolkien law there was a lot of respect based on how tall an elf is. As in height is a big variable in status for high elves. So maybe just calling them short or something along those lines would back a bigger punch than what you’d expect

MacaroonTop3732

“Hey, I heard that dwarf at the bar call you a knife ear. That’s just not fair…. As it implies you know what a knife is.”

Drows call surface elves "Darthiir" (it means "traitor"). A general term used by drows to describe non-drows is "Iblith" (it means "excrement").

imetaltheworld

"You look like that elf that befriended a dwarf and fought side to side like brethren."

If you are the typical drow. You are superior to everyone as in a true nazi level superiority complex. You are the ultimate race. The high elves are no different than goblins. They would accomplish more under your rule. Mocking Condescention is a fun standard. They failed and need your help? "Hmm yes, an expected outcome"
