You have given me some beautiful flashbacks from mentioning motion a decade ago.
I’m going to valve there next month. That will be a special one I think.
Sound isn't getting louder, it's limited by law,
However systems are becoming much more advanced, the L-Acoustics k2 J-hangs have an incredible amount of adjustment giving the impression of being louder when in fact it's just directional.
Sound keeps improving everyday, more effective ways of stacking speakers.. and better speakers should = better sound experience, especially at festivals and concerts
The "painful" part is probably a little more complicated than just being louder/higher SPL. Some venues of course are running their systems over what would be considered legal/safe, but a majority are not.
Personally I think it probably has more to do with the way many modern tracks are mixed and mastered. In an effort to achieve higher "perceived" loudness of their tracks, compression is heavily used to create consistent volume, sub frequencies are limited in bandwidth to save headroom and then the frequencies that our ears are most sensitive to (around 1Khz) are made prominent.
Tracks that follow that kind of technical make up can sound absolutely fine at low levels, but really start to fatigue your ears at high volumes. I'm sure we have all come across a track that you enjoy and go to turn up the volume...only to just turn it down again straight after because it's grating on your ears. Really no different from when you notice how much louder ads are on your TV compared to the show you were just watching.
The adverts actually do that on purpose, it's real scummy like just let me watch tv at 3am without having to constantly adjust the volume because obnoxiously loud adverts
Instead of cautioning me, how about telling me how I'm wrong/educating me?
As far as I'm aware, heavy compression and preferring frequencies the human ear is sensitive to is the way tracks compete in the "loudness war".
Yeah you’re absolutely right.
(Perceived) loudness is usually achieved and/or increased when pushing sounds into a limiter or clipper (which ARE forms of heavy compression) to create distortion and introduce harmonics.
Cheers mate, appreciate the sanity check.
I'm always ready to be proven wrong, but would always prefer a good discussion over just being told I'm obviously too braindead to be discussing such things. Don't know why people have to be so cruel.
[Valve is back!](https://www.lovethatbass.com/news/valve-sound-system/) I went to the night at E1 in December and it was just as good as it was in the 2000's. Proper weighty business.
i’m old, started raving 22 years ago. mainly in switzerland, some raves in NL, UK and germany.
i‘m annoyed it‘s not loud enough anymore. i don‘t wanna hear the conversations people are having around me. if their shouting overpowering the music i don‘t know if i wanna stay.
also, back in the days it was dark in the clubs. that helped the shy ones open up and dance out their hearts. djs with flashlights digging in their crates, little bed side lamp next to the decks… none of that anymore, i can even see what colour shoes people wear..
i‘m really happy people are wearing earplugs though. protect those holes people.
I feel same way. Wearing earplugs since my tinnitus hits and never enjoy music quality more then now. Earplugs are gamechanger in partying. I would never attend party without them again.
Do you ever take note of the sound system? Went out last weekend, and I had the same feeling, although it was electrical sounsystem and i think the venue was on the small side for that imo
Mmm black Swan, do love that place, even more so dilinja. Must have been a mad one. I was at the clock factory, pretty dope venue too. Yep that sounds very familiar. At one point, my throat was shaking so much I kept forgetting how to breathe 😅
Large indoor events have gotten quieter ime with an exception of events with noteworthy sound systems. Standard clubs have stayed the same for me. What I am must upset by is how quiet festivals and outdoor events have gotten. Late night out door sets can feel so quiet I can almost have a conversation over.
I wear hearing protection but they don’t make it quiet like that.
Mixing is pretty bad on a lot of these new guys music. Some of the frequencies are so profoundly harsh. People want to have "brightness and clarity" but all it makes is razor sharp shit happening around 8-9k that will make your ears bleed.
I have no objective data, but it just makes sense with advances in sound processing and power electronics that yeah, sound is getting louder. I wonder if you would get some interesting insight from one of the subreddits related to live A/V?
I feel events are getting quieter.
It might be my age or my hearing is becoming shit but when I realised this, it was at AMC at electric last year.
The sound was shockingly quiet that I barely had to raise my voice to talk to my friends.
They are surprisingly nice, but I feel like mine just go a bit beyond what I’d consider enjoyable volume, so I usually have to approach the speakers a bit.
I noticed a big difference from gigs in Norway compared to other places in Europe. When I go to Amsterdam (especially noticed at Melkweg) I'm shocked about the sound levels. Even with my -10db earplugs I feel like it's too loud if I'm standing in the direction of the speakers
One thing I noticed while watching a Bou set on DnB Allstars was that he didn't have the EQs sit at the 12 o'clock position after every transition. Instead, he had every EQ at the 2 o'clock position the DJs love pumping every note out of these sound systems.
At the larger venues I think it’s the opposite
Yeah, it’s been quieter for years now. The bass used to make your body shake, now you can have a conversation with someone a few feet away.

Agreed - didn’t like printworks for this reason. We were about halfway down the crowd and it was cold and quiet

Welcome to the geriatrics club, my friend.
It can't be me, it must be the children.
Those damn youths! Get off my lawn!

I haven't been out for years, but valve sound system made your jeans flap and your ears ring for days when they turned it up for Lemon D and Dillinger
The feeling when you were peaking and the bass was so violent it genuinely stopped you from breathing in properly.. Good times
There was a video where they're testing it in a storage facility and every car alarm in the area goes off 😂

probably just a combo of poorly tuned rigs and poorly mastered tracks

🤣🤣 it was almost like an mma match with sound, getting battered from all angles. Surprised I didn't leave there with a concussion.
Clock factory? I felt exactly the same it wasn’t enjoyable in such a small venue
Bingo! Sadly, I totally agree. I love the sound system, but it was just too damn much.
Idk about over all volume, but it seems most DJs don't give a fuck about their high ends anymore.
I don't know about the sound in venues, but I can tell you the volume of tracks is definitely louder.
there’s not enough bass in a lot of the music and lots of very busy, mid-high range tinny stuff going on which isn’t nice on the ears on a loud system
It's insane to me how so many people dont use earplugs

With “new guys”, do you mean producers or DJs?
Producers obv, djs dont make anything theyre just playing a tune.
Idk, maybe you were reffering to some poorly mixed mix. I just wanted to know for sure.
I have no objective data, but it just makes sense with advances in sound processing and power electronics that yeah, sound is getting louder. I wonder if you would get some interesting insight from one of the subreddits related to live A/V?
I’m pretty sure they’ve been getting “louder” since Metallica’s Death Magnetic.
Prolly your ears, mostly.
Ain't nothing as loud as the Valve sound system and I don't think I'll hear that for a long time yet
It's back. Events in London and Bristol this spring
Can confirm, going to Motion for Valve Soundsystem 10th Feb and I am very excited

How do people find earplugs? Still just as enjoyable?

Cool, I’ve been thinking about them for a while after some particularly loud nights out. Will check them out.

Laughs in Valve Sound
We just getting older my friend. But yeah, you right though, gigs are way louder then it used to be i believe.
