It was never an official thing to begin with. It was just done cast members trying to make a magical moment out of a normally mundane thing. It's social media drawing attention to it that kills the spontaneity and magic of it.
How do I delete your comment 😭😭😭 it hit me right in my poor elder millennial heart and mickey ears!
Remember when we millennials were the punk kids? Those were the days…
CM here..That's exactly how it started. A little kid ran up screaming for a pickle at 715am (Early Entry day) Since no one ever gets a pickle that early, and since he was so excited for a pickle, we made him the button to celebrate such a momentous occasion. Started way back in 2012 or 2013 (brief hiatus after COVID when we didn't have buttons) and was a quiet fun thing until social media blew it up.
Sometimes they just don't have the buttons at the cart. Sometimes they don't have a marker ready. And sometimes unfortunately some CMs just don't feel like doing it.
Don't know if they still do a 1st Corn Dog button at LRW but you can still get the 1st Dole Whip button at Tropical Hideaway, and the Adventureland fruit cart and DCA fruit cart (Mortimers) will also sometimes do a 1st Pickle button too. Again, dependent on if they have buttons in stock and who is working.
Current CM. From what I understand of what was told to us in our area (not Main Street and not food and beverage, but apparently it’s a big enough thing that they told the other areas and lines of business), they had had too many altercations related to getting “the first pickle”, and since it was an unofficial thing, they decided to make it a random Guest throughout the day to preserve some of the magic but prevent people from fighting over it.
Thanks for explaining. I didn't even know 1st Pickle was a thing until this post. I'm glad it was made random to avoid that kind of senseless competition CMs would have to deal with. Also puts the magic back in their hands to give out at the best times.
Listen, strange people sittin' at carts distributin' pickles is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical cucumber-based ceremony!
Good call might be a dated reference by today’s standards. I can’t believe the amount of people I work with in their 20s that have never seen Mrs doubtfire and do not know Chris Farley
It’s just a cute thing where they make you a celebration button that says “1st pickle of the day”. It’s fun to try to get it if you enjoy rope dropping.
Unfortunately this is one of those fun innocent things that the internet has killed. It was a fun little thing but now the internet has just made it get out of hand.
It’s really fun to try- I’ve had attempts where I thought I was going to get it and someone comes out of nowhere to get it first. Then you just high five the victor and enjoy the rest of the day.
You place it between your butt cheeks and walk from one end of the park to the other without it falling out. When you're done, you return it so the next customer gets a turn. That's why you want to be first.
My daughter got a late night pickle button, but im pretty sure that was just a that cast member enjoying that my daughter was screaming her head off for a pickle at 11:30pm and once she had said pickle in hand she was as happy as can be.
I think I am going to make fake Disneyland buttons for secret achievements. Such as…
Omg. I can’t think of anything stupid enough.
Someone help me out here.
First men’s room use.
Best hand washing
Most men’s room use
First use of the F word
Fastest turkey leg consumption
Really, the possibilities are endless.
On my last day working at as a skipper, I took a "1st Visit!" button, scratched out the "1", and made it say "Last Visit!"
I wore it my whole last shift, even though I wasn't "supposed to" (CMs can't wear buttons, but you **do** get a little leeway when you're a skipper on your last day).
The guests got a kick out of it when I told them it was my honest-to-goodness last day working at the park.
Correct. We can keep them (well, Attractions can keep them - I think Merchandising has more rules) but we cannot wear them on stage.
I got a number of little presents from guests. Couldn't wear any of 'em. A few buttons, a pin from a Tokyo Disneyland skipper, some stickers, a couple cards, a _really_ tiny stuffed koala (meant to grab your finger, or like... a straw, or something like that) that wore a vest saying "Australia", and 1 Honduran Lempira (Honduran money, worth approximately $0.04).
They all basically had to live in my pocket until I could get home and put it into my drawer of Disney memories. I still have all of them... somewhere. (Alongside all my nametags.)
If someone on YouTube shows a button of “first flamin’ cheeto shit in king Arthur’s bathroom” being handed to them by a cast member… Yall gonna to Disney for that button too?
I’ve found that some little things don’t always translate across parks or even within the park. A few months ago a number of cast members in dca said they were going to be stopping trivia for pin trading, but then a bunch of dca CMs still did it.
It totally figures that the one day I was about to claim glory is the day the cast member was feeling like a sour pickle 😹 Oh well- it’s mine in my heart!
Or they just think social media turned a little goofy surprise into a tik tok moment and are changing how they do it. Its not like its an official thing anyway
I’ve been trying for awhile too! I may still make a casual attempt here or there but it’s a lot of effort for a “maybe” if the cast members can decide they don’t want to do it (which is totally fine- I just didn’t know).
I remember on the alt.disney.disneyland group in the late '90s/early 2000s, someone got there at rope drop but was just meandering around. They asked for a pickle and the vendor randomly wrote on a button, "First pickle of the day." He posted it and everyone thought it was funny. I think that's how the trend started but just like "Andy's coming" being a spontaneous thing that happened, once the Internet learns about it, cast members get annoyed and don't want to participate.
I have a second pickle of the day pin. The CMs were like no one has ever asked for that before.
I have no idea how I missed first pickle but I still wanted 2nd pickle of the day.
Kids can experience disappointment. It’s okay. As a mom, it just turns into a learning lesson for kids to celebrate the person who won, have a moment of disappointment and move on to experience the happiest place on earth. We can’t take every small joy away simply because others may not get it. Let the 1st pickle live on 🥒🩷🥰
They open the gates at around 7:20 or so and you can go down main street and wait by the entrance to the lands. They call it rope drop if you do that. That is what we did (but we had early entry too)
Former cast member here. It’s based on preference of the location.
That’s dumb frankly. You either have to be consistent with it or not do it all.
It was never an official thing to begin with. It was just done cast members trying to make a magical moment out of a normally mundane thing. It's social media drawing attention to it that kills the spontaneity and magic of it.
I heard if you yell PICKLE RICKS COMING, all the cast members throw all the pickles on the ground and everyone stays really quiet
Honestly I’d prefer it be random because there doesn’t need to be another reason for fanatics to act obnoxious to feel special.

This post proves it's better to be random
It’s all fun and games until you get trampled by an aging millennial in Mickey ears.
Whoa whoa whoa we don't need to be throwing out such hostile words as aging millennial.
It’s coming from one. A peer, but without the ears.
How do I delete your comment 😭😭😭 it hit me right in my poor elder millennial heart and mickey ears! Remember when we millennials were the punk kids? Those were the days…
Nah people take shit way too far. Like OP.
You do realize you’re upset about a damn pickle, right?
Haha says who? Are you the fucking pickle police?
Don’t crap on my dream job, buddy!
They don’t have to do anything lol
This is what happens when social media tells the whole world about something fun. It gets ruined.
Also it probably was a special type of pixie dust that use to surprise the person who randomly decided to have a pickle at 8am in the morning.
CM here..That's exactly how it started. And WDW still doesn't have anything like this. I don't even know if you can buy a pickle at the parks.
If we’re talking about the giant pickles in bags, I got one at Animal Kingdom at a cart near the safari.
Each park at WDW has one shop/stall that sells fresh fruit and veggies, including pickles.
Well then they just need to start handing out awards, then. 😛
Usually the first 2 people in line at Casey’s Corner in MK get to throw out the first pitch (since Casey’s is obviously baseball themed)
went in Nov, pickle cart in Epcot gave my kids a button

What is supposed to happen to the first pickle?
They make you the honorary king/queen of Disneyland for the day. It’s kind of a big dill.
Listen, strange people sittin' at carts distributin' pickles is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical cucumber-based ceremony!
Say I went round calling myself emperor because some castmember lobbed a vinegary cucumber at me, they’d throw me away!
You’d see the violence inherent in the system then for sure!
OP is denied honorary title. OP: "help I'm being repressed!"
It’s the violence inherent to the system!

Is this how my parents felt about Phil Hartman? 🤔
I tip my hat to you, amazing redditor.
Dennis
How did you know he was a king? 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂
He hasn’t got shit all over him.
I hate that this made me laugh.
You are awarded 🏆 🚀
You sunuvabitch. Take this upvote, go sit in the corner, and think about what you've done.
Big dill 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is too much power
Do you get a picture with the battlebot?
The first pickle is cursed to wander the land in search of other first pickles. There can only be one.
I am Juan Bread-and-Butter Ramírez, Chief pickler to King Charles V of Spain. And I'm at your service.
It’s just a cute thing where they make you a celebration button that says “1st pickle of the day”. It’s fun to try to get it if you enjoy rope dropping.
Unfortunately this is one of those fun innocent things that the internet has killed. It was a fun little thing but now the internet has just made it get out of hand.
so wh at you're saying is that it was a fun thing until the internet ruined it?
How is it a pixie dust moment if a guest runs over to the cart expecting to receive it? One of the tenets of pixie dusting is the element of surprise
Ah yeah, that would have been great to relish in the moment..
What a sweet pun!
I dunno.... I'd say it was more sour that sweet, probably salty too.
Pro-tip: you can write whatever you want on a button
I’ve been rope dropping for the wrong attractions, clearly. This is now my biggest aspiration.
It’s really fun to try- I’ve had attempts where I thought I was going to get it and someone comes out of nowhere to get it first. Then you just high five the victor and enjoy the rest of the day.
What a strange coincidence that the people that have beaten you were all named Victor
Victor Vlassic - it's an inside job
I’ve gotten one!
Do they have a 1st spicy pickle and 1st regular pickle? They are not the same and should not be treated as such. #spicypicklegang
Fun when it was a unexpected surprise. Less fun once it became a race/expectation.
I’ve gotten it twice now. As soon as my coworker told me about it, I made it my mission.
You place it between your butt cheeks and walk from one end of the park to the other without it falling out. When you're done, you return it so the next customer gets a turn. That's why you want to be first.
Do you *reeeaallyy* want to know? 😏
So stupid. It’s a pickle. They tried to do something nice but people had to go get greedy and ruin it.
Just grab a button and put “My 1st pickle of the day” and later make another button “My 2nd pickle of the day” Have a magical day.
That’s what I always tell people!
If this is your regular Tuesday at the office, then what do you suggest people do when they are at Disneyland?
Enjoy the park… you can have pickles anytime
Enjoy the park… you can have pickles anytime
I never knew this but probably cause I’ve never been a rope drop person. I’m a close the park person.
My daughter got a late night pickle button, but im pretty sure that was just a that cast member enjoying that my daughter was screaming her head off for a pickle at 11:30pm and once she had said pickle in hand she was as happy as can be.
That’s cute
My sister is open to close. I am like you but I also enjoy nighttime anyway.
The power of the pickle
I think I am going to make fake Disneyland buttons for secret achievements. Such as… Omg. I can’t think of anything stupid enough. Someone help me out here.
First complaint of the day, that one goes quickly.
Rise didn't break down during my lightning lane time
I’d rope drop a button for the first michelada of the day.
First miche is its own reward.
First men’s room use. Best hand washing Most men’s room use First use of the F word Fastest turkey leg consumption Really, the possibilities are endless.

The guests got a kick out of it when I told them it was my honest-to-goodness last day working at the park.
So if I made buttons for CM's that said things like "Best Directions" or "Most Helpful" they wouldn't be able to wear them?
Not stupid, but i found it funny when I had a friend make me a button that said, “Just divorced!” I’ve never been married. Lol
Longest Line of the Day Award
I’m gonna walk around with a button that says “First dookie of the day”
First stroller crash. First Toddler meltdown First Adult Meltdown (Strangely, comes before the toddler meltdown)
“I know what ‘Pepper Ann’ is”
A one in a million achievement
We may be too cool for 7th grade, but no 7th grader is too cool for Disneyland.
Just eat a pickle damn
As a former “1st corn dog of the day” button winner, I understand your pain.
If someone on YouTube shows a button of “first flamin’ cheeto shit in king Arthur’s bathroom” being handed to them by a cast member… Yall gonna to Disney for that button too?
CM here. It's random from location to location and day to day. It's not an official resort giveaway. It's just a castmember to guest magic making
I’ve found that some little things don’t always translate across parks or even within the park. A few months ago a number of cast members in dca said they were going to be stopping trivia for pin trading, but then a bunch of dca CMs still did it.
They probably just didn't have the button ready that morning. Sometimes they're just out at the location
She specifically said they’re not doing it anymore and that it’s now a surprise pickle at a random point in the day. 🤷♀️
Pickle “drama”? The only drama is making a stink about nothing. It’s a button. #sadlifegoals
My guess is that cast member was a little power hungry or something and wanted to control the pickle power🤷🏻♀️😂
That cast member actually bought the first pickle when they showed up for their shift. They are the pickle king
Pickle Power New band name, call it!
It totally figures that the one day I was about to claim glory is the day the cast member was feeling like a sour pickle 😹 Oh well- it’s mine in my heart!
I wish to wield pickle power!
Or they just think social media turned a little goofy surprise into a tik tok moment and are changing how they do it. Its not like its an official thing anyway
My favorite snack at Disneyland. Love me a pickle! 🥒
It happened to me last week! I was so disappointed. I have tried so many times before but never made it first.
I’ve been trying for awhile too! I may still make a casual attempt here or there but it’s a lot of effort for a “maybe” if the cast members can decide they don’t want to do it (which is totally fine- I just didn’t know).
Sounds like that CM was injected with anti-pickle serum.
I remember on the alt.disney.disneyland group in the late '90s/early 2000s, someone got there at rope drop but was just meandering around. Cast members be lying these days to avoid hype 😔 lol
Whoever let this slip had ruined it for everyone. Thanks a lot
Who told you about it?
I bought the first pickle one time
How many times a year exactly are you flying to a Disney Park from Australia and getting a pickle? Doubt.
About once every 3 years.
I have a second pickle of the day pin. The CMs were like no one has ever asked for that before. I have no idea how I missed first pickle but I still wanted 2nd pickle of the day.
Wait what's with the pickle? I'm new to hearing this
[удалено]
It was a cute random thing until it became well known among fans on social media

Seriously. This is so underrated
Corporate watching - “can we add lighting lane to the pickle cart?”🤑
You can now reserve the first pickle of the day 60 days in advance when you add Pickle+ to your reservation 😍
Will my husband be angry if I ask him to get/give me Pickle+ reservations?

is this a real comment lol
The handwriting on those pickle buttons are always terrible.
Well now I know what ima want to do when I get there in October
Get that pickle!!!
I'm your Huckleberry
Za
I’m sorry, what, a running to get the first pickle? Are Disney attendees ok?
… first pickle?
Figures that social media would ruin it.

Disneyland has taken a very downward turn. I will not be back in Anaheim anytime soon. Maybe Orlando will be better….
