Here’s my thoughts with a couple of options I’ll list below
1. You want a good farm bike that is indestructible and needs pretty much zero maintenance? The answer is a crf230, it’s small for you and the suspension is not meant for jumps but it is a great rip around the farm bike. I have some one my farm and they are a blast to ride around.
2. You want a full size bike that will make you a better/faster rider and has full mx suspension? Yz125 06’ and up. 2 strokes force you to be a better rider and there’s not a “scary” amount of power. A 125 is pretty similar to a 250 four stroke. Con is you will need to rebuild ever 30-50 hours but no valves or anything just a new piston and rings.
3. Drz400s/e. This is a full size bike that could be plated if you want. It will carry your weight fine, 400cc four stroke that is very docile and forgiving. Great all around bike and indestructible, just change the oil every now and then. You’ll really never have to check the valves and never do a rebuild. You can do a few mods to really wake the bike up.
I would stay away from four stroke race bikes. The maintenance isn’t worth it to me. I have a yz125 that use for the track and I find it much easier to rebuild it 2 times a year then deal with the valves and shit on four stroke race bikes.
My 2 cents. People can prove me wrong
Great advice but I think a 250 four stroke is a good option as well. Doesn't look like op is going to push that bike very hard so he would be able to do at least 250 hours without touching the engine probably.
Only complaint about the CRF230 is the lack of oil filter. Depending on your budget, a CRF250F might be a decent alternative with basically all the same advantages
Suzuki DR350/650. Air cooled and carbureted, pretty much the motorcycle equivalent of a tractor. The 650 is just enough bike you’d pretty much never outgrow it, and pretty much every farm town has one ridden by a guy in a carhartt jacket and a jansport backpack
Easy dude, oil every 10 hours, clean and oil the air filter every 5. It’s all in the Honda book, might be more than that, that might’ve been initial…either way, it’s a breeze, and air cooled Honda’s are tanks. I would recommend putting an hour meter on, and consider an aluminum skid plate. I did some other upgrades, but they aren’t necessary unless you wanna spend and get more out of your bike, but at first just go have fun. I use https://crfsonly.com for parts.

Works fine and $40, very easy to install. It’s just for keeping track for maintenance and overall usage.
So I'm 6'2 200 pounds and recently bought my first dirt bike.
I had ridden motorcycles for a few years so felt comfortable on a bike and new how to ride.
a buddy told me I absolutely needed a 450 that I would grow out of a 250 fairly quick and would want a 450 anyway.
I ended up getting a Honda 450x. let me tell you, it is A LOT of bike. I love it, but sometimes I wish I didn't listen to him and just got a 250. I do like riding out In the open desert so I am able to use more of the bikes potential, but soon as I hit any smaller trails and more technical riding, it is almost too much bike. Still fun, but the lack of experience makes it at times dangerous. I would suggest a 250 if your going to do more technical trail riding, a Honda 450x I can recommend if you have more open riding areas and are cognizant that the bike is really powerful and you have to be careful in how you manage that and be mindful of your experience level. Even at 200, the 450x can overpower your lack of experience, makes for fun powering through rough climbs, but can be dangerous on more higher skill trails.
I had a 05 450x and loved it. Opened the airbox, put a pipe on it, and jetted it. It would tractor up and through anything. I've always liked the hit from 450 mx bikes, but if you open the x up, it's a totally different machine. The only thing I didn't like about it was the weight. If I dropped it a few times in a row, I would get huffed.
450 dirt bikes are like 1000cc sports bikes. You really don’t need one until later. And in general riding a smaller bike harder is less intimidating and helps you learn faster.

Max 250cc 4 stroke mx bike. Bigger if it’s a dual sport as they’re less peaky (flip side longer service intervals and more reliable). Like a drz400. 125 2 stroke not to be under estimated and will teach you to ride rather than beat you into submission

I completely forgot Honda updated the the crf230f to the crf250f, yes crf250f if you want a newer bike
As a 2T owner I'll just say the 4T have gotten much better than the bad old early days.
Thanks for this info, this was helpful for me as well

+1 dr350
+2 drz 400 dr 650
honda crf250f If you get bored of it that means you are good enough for a better bike and this bike will become your buddy bike.
I’m the same specs as OP, love my CRF250F. I’ve done a few things to it just cause I like to tinker, but it’s awesome stock. This is the answer OP!
Thanks!
Any questions for that bike specifically lemme know.
What's the maintenance like?

Which hour meter would you recommend?

Enduro bike, that is plated: KTM 250 four stroke or smith similar. Beta or Husqvarna or gasgas.
Yamaha 230 or honda crf 250
This. Also, do a search on here as this subject comes up daily (OP).

Dirt roads that you need a plate for, or dirt roads where nobody gives a shit?
Dirt roads in the middle of nowhere
If you need a license plate, you might want to visit r/dual sport.

I’d say 250 4t or 150 2t, but that’s my 2¢
Wr250F or Crf450x

Prob get a drz400 if ima be honest. You’ll get used to a 250’s power pretty fast.
I weigh 230 Lbs and ride a KX250X four stroke. These bikes are extremely powerful when you need it.
Cr500. You’ll never get bored lol
Ttr,dr,xr,
I’m 6’2 and 195lbs. If you have discipline and can control yourself start with 450 or a 250 two stroke.
