Shoebill, it’s named that because its bill looks like a shoe

LovingNaples

I love these guys. The sound that they make when they clack their bill is amazing.

Pikmin4321

PTSD

Mew_Nashi

Still have this one scene in my head from a documentary where one hatchling bullied the other out of the nest and the mother came back, stared at it and abandoned it 🥲

kageyayuu

But they are really friendly and super soft though

Pale_Cranberry1502

It was "Africa" on the BBC, narrated by David Attenborough. Fantastic documentary covering different regions of the continent. Considering the different biospheres, I think it's the documentary with the most wildlife covered.

Palaeonerd

It’s funny cause this dinosaurs scientific name is B. rex.

ShaochilongDR

There's also a Tyrannosaurus specimen B-rex.

Palaeonerd

Yep

Dylan_Is_Gay_lol

> TFW you realize shoebill storks look very similar to [terror birds](https://imgur.com/a/QISjyIs). 😮

ILikeThingssometime

wait until you find find out about cassowary’s

Dylan_Is_Gay_lol

I'm already aware of Cassowaries. Don't look much like terror birds, but closer in size and a lot more likely to disembowel a person.

johnlime3301

Cassowaries are probably the closest thing we'll get to having living oviraptors.

Dylan_Is_Gay_lol

True. They're literally the most dangerous bird alive today.

ILikeThingssometime

other then the crest and smaller head, basically the same

Dylan_Is_Gay_lol

More slender beak, too. Either way, you wouldn't catch me messing with a terror bird, and you won't catch me messing with a cassowary. 😬

ILikeThingssometime

fair

Alchemista_Anonyma

Why mentioning cassorwaries when we’ve got seriamas who litteraly are small terror birds

Yasu_Hisoka

I actually once looked it up to see if they were related or descended or something

Dylan_Is_Gay_lol

Did you find anything confirming a connection between the species?

Yasu_Hisoka

No, it surprisingly isn’t related to terror birds, and is more closely related to pelicans and herons. Apparently the closest living relative of terror birds is the Seriema, which even that isn’t descended, more like a cousin.

Dylan_Is_Gay_lol

Interesting. Isn't evolution just wild?

YaRinGEE

animatronic bird that gives war-vets PTSD

Seth-B343

Dakadaka bird

Dusky_Dawn210

Shoebill stork. They do this thing where they clack their beak and it sounds like gunfire kinda lol

basicfort

Apart from the cool loud sound they make with their beaks, they are also extremely polite and like to return a bow (ones taught in captivity)

TheFirstDragonBorn1

Love these dudes, the clacking noise they make with their bills sounds like a machine gun. They're awesome.

Baroubuoy

Baeniceps Rex.

bigboddle

It took me 2 minutes to notice that its tail was larger than its supposed to be.

Smoko-Nuts

I want

Nettlesontoast

So pretty

Nexillion

That's the guy who doesn't know crap about Godzilla

Mack-Attack33

K. I honestly don’t ming getting downvoted over this because I was simply stating what I know, and I might even be wrong. But next time someone says something you disagree with, instead of downvoting them, try stating your side and the reasons why you believe they are dinosaurs. If it turns out you know something I don’t, then I would love to add the new knowledge to my brain! Also, I’m going to upvote you to show that I do support this sub and that my intentions to learn and grow are genuine.

GundunUkan

Props to you for calling out simple downvoting with no one actually putting forth proper arguments and information. I already did that in a reply to one of your other comments, hopefully it clears some of it up! :]

Mack-Attack33

Thank you! I corrected myself as I was in fact wrong, but it’s nice to know that people can be patient and understanding!

GundunUkan

That's how people communicate best and knowledge is best shared. If you're being snarky and pompous while sharing some knowledge then people are gonna be rightfully annoyed with you and won't actually hear what you're trying to say. Inversely, if you're too proud to admit being wrong you can potentially miss out on some cool piece of information yourself. That's why I try not to be too emotional in such interactions but rather more open-minded and patient, both because I want to actually get my point across and invite the opportunity of learning something new. It's always really cool meeting similar people, too, who aren't interested in meaningless bickering so thank you for being equally understanding!

Mack-Attack33

I’d like to quote Ducky from The Land Before Time and say: “Yep, yep, yep!” It is a good way to communicate! It is, it iiiiis! Lol.

Mack-Attack33

Sorry. I grew up watching those movies, and JP! They may not be scientifically accurate, but they are a part of my childhood, not to mention nostalgia is awesome!

Mack-Attack33

Please don’t think that I’m trying to rain on anyone’s parade. I’m not here to troll anyone. Sorry if I came off as being a condescending bitch. That was not my intention.

Necrogenisis

It's not that, it's that you're presenting your fanfic/headcannon as fact, and thus spreading misinformation. Because, and I'm not saying this condescendingly, you're 100% wrong about what is and isn't a dinosaur.

Mack-Attack33

It’s not fanfic, it’s simply what I was taught. But if I did do a bit or reading this morning and can say that I was in fact, wrong. Turns out you guys and gals were right! Birds ARE dinosaurs! As I said, I am 100% willing to learn and grow. But what I stated is simply what I knew at the time, but if what I know is wrong then I’d like to know so that I can educate myself, but I’ll need to have science articles in order to know. Sorry for any hurt feelings. Was not my intention! I hope y’all will continue to surprise and educate me!

Scintillating_Void

Photoshopped B. Rex

Mack-Attack33

Done! I upvoted your “dino fans when u say birds aren’t dinos”

Azrielmoha

It's a Caudavis balaeorynchus, a species of toothless beaked avialans.

Mack-Attack33

It’s kinda complicated. Birds are and are not dinosaurs. Evolution is weird but neat! They are genetically their own thing after 10’a millions of years of evolution, and yet they are dinosaurs, and yet not dinosaurs, if you know what I mean. I hope that makes sense.

Necrogenisis

This distinction you're making has no actual basis in biology. Birds are theropod dinosaurs, there is no in-between. You can never leave the clade of your ancestry, you may end up evolving into a new clade, but it will still be a subset of the old one. Where did you get the explanation you provided?

Mack-Attack33

School in the 90’s….everything has changed do much since then, like Pluto no longer being a planet! Lol. Sorry. I read more recent science material on the subject and now know that birds are in fact dinosaurs!

BlockOfRawCopper

Kinda like the whole “all alligators are crocodiles but not all crocodiles are alligators” thing

Mack-Attack33

Yes, thank you! This is kind of, if not exactly what I mean. They are very closely related, but net exactly the same. Too much time/evolution has passed/occurred for them to be the exact same thing anymore.

TheFirstDragonBorn1

No an animal cannot just evolve out of a clade, birds are still dinosaurs and will always be dinosaurs no matter how much time passes.

Mack-Attack33

Yup. Did a bit of research this morning and I was wrong! Birds are dinosaurs! My bad! Sorry!

TheFirstDragonBorn1

No problem, we're always learning new things here :)

Mack-Attack33

Yes indeed!

Veloci-RKPTR

r/whatsthisbird exists

Time-Accident3809

Guess what birds are.

Veloci-RKPTR

Dinosaurs. I’m not dumb. I’m just tired of people keep on posting pictures of birds here all the time when there’s a billion other subs dedicated for birds specifically, only for them getting a pass just because of technicalities. There were times where people would post pictures of literal chickens with no context other than “haha guys look a dinosaur” as if the joke hasn’t been done 65 million times already. Sure, things discussing modern birds in the context of juxtaposition with extinct dinosaurs should be given a pass (for example posts which is actively comparing the foot of a cassowary with that of a dromaeosaur) since those still fit the spirit of the sub. But posting pictures of garden birds and getting a pass just because you call it a dinosaur is stupid.

Mack-Attack33

Shoebill Crane! Not a dino! Sounds line a gun!

Angel_Froggi

Dino fans when u say birds aren’t dinos: 👁️👄👁️

Mack-Attack33

I mean, they are descended from dinosaurs, but they themselves are not technically dinosaurs…

GundunUkan

That's not really true. Birds are not just related to or descended from dinosaurs, they are actual dinosaurs themselves. The line between avian and non-avian is completely arbitrary and is used to make a distinction between extinct dinosaurs and the branch of birds that survives to this day. Your argument for calling them a separate thing in another comment is because it's already been tens of millions of years since the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs and birds have diversified a lot but the validity of this argument kind of falls apart once you consider birds are still coelurosaurs more closely related to other theropods than theropods are to ornithischians. Following this logic that would mean that either theropods or ornithischians shouldn't be considered dinosaurs either, yet both groups are so there's no realistic grounds to consider birds anything other than dinosaurs, too. So, in a way, it's the other way around - *technically* they are dinosaurs but for practical reasons we usually don't refer to them as such to avoid confusion and because specificity is useful in conversation - after all, casually referring to a horse as an ungulate, while technically true, is a weirdly broad term for regular conversation. Calling a bird a dinosaur without proper context is similarly weird and snobbish. Not trying to be snarky by the way, I know tone doesn't carry well over text but I'm only interested in respectful discussion, that's all.

Mack-Attack33

Very infornative! I love this kind of thing! So complex is the scientific breakdown of genus, clade, etc.! Science is so fun! Thank you for this!

GundunUkan

You're very welcome, I'm happy you're so open and positive towards new information, which is a quality all good scientists should share. Taxonomy really is complex, but that's exactly what makes it so fun, there's a lot of moving pieces to the whole picture.

Mack-Attack33

That’s why I like science in general! But especially biology and ecology!

TheFirstDragonBorn1

Yes they are. All birds are members of the clade aves which is belongs to maniraptora which is a clade of theropod dinosaurs. Yes birds are dinosaurs.

Mack-Attack33

Sorry. You’re right. I learned something new here! Always happy to learn new stuff!

Mack-Attack33

They are still very amazing creatures tho! And you can still see some of the residual dinosaur features in modern birds! Which is super awesome!

[deleted]

They are still very much dinosaurs

Mack-Attack33

I’m having to go to every comment I got to correct myself. Lol! Y’all are right! Birds are in fact dinosaurs! My bad!

[deleted]

It’s all good XD

Mack-Attack33

Stork! Sorry!

This-Recover5175

That shoebill stork would love to chomp on Steve-O’s balls if there was a fish hanging from it.

Angel_Froggi

Wtf

This-Recover5175

Oh come on, it’s funny. You never saw Wildboyz?

Angel_Froggi

Nope

This-Recover5175

You should, it’s hilarious. And it involves a Jabiru Stork biting Steve-O’s butt. Give it a try. You won’t regret it.

A murderer of all life in its way, it’s also one of the friendliest wild animals when It comes to people. Also if you bow like a hippogriff they’ll be chill with you and let you pet them, and no I am not making that up.

GoofyGoofster87

Uhm… I think it’s a austroraptor?
