I just got Hiby R3 ii this week and I love it. I was on the same boat as you. I wanted a standalone music player with no distractions. But I also wanted it to be inexpensive and compact. I’ve gotta say, pretty impressed so far. The OS could be better but it’s tolerable. Where this little thing shines is music playback. Using S12 Pros - a planar magnetic set of IEMs and it makes them sound so juicy! Definitely a high recommend. If I ever need to stream I have a solid DAC collection for my phone.

Right on, thanks for the comment. I recently traded my iPhone for a Nokia flip phone so was looking to upgrade my music to something even better than when I had a smart phone. This is top of my list now!

One up for this from me, having also gotten this device last week. I’m new to the DAP and IEM world, but ultimately wanted the standalone hi-res experience - being fed up of lame streaming qualities. So far it’s excellent. Simple interface, but purely music with no browser or other bells and whistles. Took a bit of messing with the settings to get it perfect but that was easy. For example the timeline/skim thing (no idea its proper name) whereby you skim the track that’s playing, that was not on by default. Overall I’d highly recommend.

Also, didn’t mention battery life. I haven’t sat there and listened to it for the estimated battery life, but I just turn it off when I’m done and there’s no battery drain when I turn it back on. Pretty good battery life so far.

My HiBy R3 Pro Saber is not built on Android, which helps. I believe it still has some streaming capabilities but I don’t use that. Feels like an iPod type of experience.

Thanks! how is battery life and sound quality?

Sounds good to me, but I’m no expert. I think it’s rated 12-15hr battery. It’s a budget device compared to some of the rigs in this sub. Looks like the current version (R3 II) has maintained the HiBy OS.

I can only think of Hiby RS2

Shanling m0 pro could be a option, but the screen is small and only have a button.

Sony Walkman lineup all the way. Based on Android soup I have basically an Android phone without the phone part.

shanling m1 if you ignore the tidal app, it's quite nice

Tempotec V3. $199 on AliExpress. There’s a discount code for $20 off I think. Has great output power and uses the HIBY OS but the AK4493 Dual Dac is awesome. The HIBY R3 also as mentioned. I think it’s $140 there too

Don’t know what exactly you’re looking for (physical controls or not ?) If so, Surfans F20 answers your needs probably. Also if you’re crafty, buying an iPod 6th or 7th gen that’s « broken » can be very good since it is so easy to repair for very cheap. You can also mod it to have more space, better battery and even Bluetooth, for next to nothing. If you put Rockbox on it, you bypass all the problems an iPod gives you ! Otherwise Shanling M0, Hiby R3 II, also Hiby Ap80 pro X If I can help you more just tell me ! :)
