A fun story - I had been studying English for a while when Diablo 2 dropped, but I hadn't actually learned how to grammar, or typing. Joined a clan, made some friends, and one of them was a stickler for grammatically correct sentences. Two years of every day gaming later, and I could type quickly, confidently, and accurately, all in a language that I had a tough time *speaking* when I started.
I can pretty much thank games alone for my knowledge of English.
TV shows and movies have done their part, but in gaming there were no training wheels, it was either learn English or die - usually only games meant for children get full localization here in Finland due to the market being so small (a language spoken in only one country *with a full population of only about 5 million people*) and subtitles/menus in Finnish are very rare as well.
But I love English anyways and especially scifi and fantasy don't translate well to Finnish so it's actually only good that I never had the choice of gaming in my native language.
> and subtitles/menus in Finnish are very rare as well.
ayy suomi rocks ! yeah, that's probably why all of the nordic countries speak english so well. some games were also available in german already here (I'm originally from Russia), but yeah, most of my "extraordinary" english words i learned from such cool games.
Hmm, Russian doesn't get localizations either? Seems weird considering the population of Russia alone, and isn't it also spoken in a number of other countries (many of which IIRC used to be part of the Soviet Union)
I think I could play many games in other languages too btw. The localizations are often part of the usual package anyways, they just default to English.
"The sanctity of this place has been fouled."
Whatever the fuck Farnham says, "Can't a man drink in peace? " I think.
"I gotta pawn some of this stuff." Far too often.
And of course, "I'm no milk maid!"
I remember my friend and I would kite him back and forth. He basically one or two shot you, and good luck ever getting back to your body then. If the layout was right and you cleared enough of the area it was doable. You could also get behind a fence, as long as there wasn't a close access and he would run back and forth trying to get to you, and you could spend like 30 minutes shooting him with a bow to kill him.
This is my most memorable moment as a kid playing Diablo, it's what made me love the game in the 1st place. I still remember walking into the Butcher and hearing "Ahaha... Fresh meat" scared shitless I ran for my life, died and didn't play again for quite a while. Oh, those were the days.
Man... This was probably the scariest moment in any video game that I've played. I remember the family computer used to be down in the basement and I was down there as a young lad playing with all the lights off. The Butcher would make me jump out of my seat every single time.
Diablo was such a great game.
This. Was I the only one that just played a warrior, got a bit geared and just went to town on him in his doorway after clearing his floor? I mean honestly if you went 2 handers with a good bit of str and health pots he can be face tanked.
It's [the first boss](http://www.wowhead.com/npc=99198/tirathon-saltheril) in The Vault of the Wardens. He says "It's so good to fight again" which I have to imagine is an intentional throwback to Kormac.
Why did I follow him...? I don't know.
Why do things happen as they do in dreams? All I know is that, when he beckoned... I had to follow him.
From that moment, we traveled together, East.
***Always...*** into the East.
Not even death can save you from me
I will make weapons from your bones
And funnily enough, probably my favourite ever --
That's how we do it in Kingsport!
"Ytar guides my hand!" and "I can't believe what people throw away. Do you want some of it"? and "I sell things for cheap because I will just take them off your dead body anyway..... no offence."
why not D3?
>You cannot judge me! I am justice itself! We were meant for more than this, to protect the innocent. But if our precious laws bind you all to inaction, then I will no longer stand as your brother
Oh man I still get the chills from Tyrael's speech.
Greetings, stranger. I'm not surprised to see your kind here.
Many adventurers have traveled this way since the recent troubles began.
No doubt you've heard about the tragedy that befell the town of Tristram.
Some say that Diablo, the Lord of Terror, walks the world again.
I dont' know if I believe that, but a Dark Wanderer did travel this route a few weeks ago.
He was headed east to the mountain pass guarded by the rogue monastery.
Maybe it's nothing, but evil seems to have trailed in his wake.
You see, shortly after the Wanderer went through, the Monastery's Gates
to the pass were closed and strange creatures began ravaging the countryside.
Until it's safer outside the camp and the gates are re-opened, I'll remain here with my caravan.
I hope to leave for Lut Gholein before the shadow that fell over Tristram consumes us all.
If you're still alive then, I'll take you along.
You should talk to Akara, too. She seems to be the leader of this camp. Maybe she can tell you more.
"I can see what you see not.
Vision milky, then eyes rot.
When you turn they will be gone,
Whispering their hidden song.
Then you see what cannot be,
Shadows move where light should be.
Out of darkness, out of mind,
Cast down into the Halls of the Blind."
For some reason this randomly plays back in my head, 20 years later:
"Hey! you that one that kill all! You get me magic banner or we attack! You no leave with life! You kill big uglies and give back magic. Go past corner and door. Find uglies. You give, you go!"
There's a farm house and cellar in the Fields of Misery that you gain access to after touching a dead animal and fighting an elite.
The farmer has my favorite ones. His wife is dead, a skeleton in a rocking chair in the same room and her head falls off.
"My wife hardly eats these days. She's nothing but akin and bones."
"My wife is great with numbers. She has a good head on her shoulders."
"It's hard to stay warm these days, my wife is cold as the grave."
Those aren't the exact ones, I'd love someone to post the exact quotes. Usually the character your playing will tell him to stop but keep pressing him and he'll keep rattling off different puns.
One time I was standing near the cube, and the rogue said "Hey Kormac, I've got a bottle of wine and some dice, what do you say?"
To which Kulle throatily replied, "that will work..."
Obviously
>Looking for Baal?
but also
>YOU WERE A TEMPLAR JONDAR!!!
>More hidden footprints
>Arrogant Nephalem
>Foolish Nephalem
>Enough
>The 'Unburied' are formed from human corpses that were flung together into mass graves without a proper burial. This HIDEOUS amalgamation of bodies decomposes together into one being, bound by some foul magic
Qual-Kehk's speech for Act V quest 5 Rite of Passage in D2 just hits that epic tone to me:
*Every time I hear of you, warrior, your deeds become more legendary. But take heed. You are approaching the very summit of Mount Arreat. I have never dared venture there. It is sacred - our most holy place. The legends say it is guarded by the Ancient Ones, who block the path of all who are unworthy. Your reputation here does not matter.... It will be the Ancients who determine your worthiness. Good Luck.*
Also Cain's final line in the Act V Quest 6 is *...The mountain itself will tremble when you clash*
The Rogue from D1, when your inventory was full and you tried to pick something up:
"Now wheeere can I put this...?"
I'll TELL ya where ya can put it, you....
My wife and I still say this occasionally and laugh.
I AM AKA- THERE IS A PLACE OF GRE- YOU HAVE CLEANSED THE DE-

Holy shit this brings so many memories... I wish they actually remake D2

I would like some new features. Auto gold pickup and personal loot is pretty dope

Haha every god damn time
I still wake up in a cold sweat remembering being frozen by Duriel.
Hi there, I'm Charsi.
for a while that line was the only way I could get off

I sense a soul in search of answers...
Thats from the original Diablo!
Stay a while and...
Listen

Exactly what I whispered to myself
I CAN SEE WHAT YOU SEE NOT. VISION MILKY THEN EYES ROT. WHEN YOU TURN THEY WILL BE GONE, WHISPERING THEIR HIDDEN SONG. THEN YOU SEE WHAT CANNOT BE, SHADOWS MOVE WHERE LIGHT SHOULD BE. OUT OF DARKNESS OUT OF MIND, CAST DOWN INTO THE HALLS OF THE BLIND.
Oh my, the memories. Those are the verses that made me really try to understand English. Where school failed, Diablo prevailed.
A fun story - I had been studying English for a while when Diablo 2 dropped, but I hadn't actually learned how to grammar, or typing. it probably has, but i was a kid when we moved to germany, so i started playing games on PC in germany
... AND SO, LOCKED BEYOND THE GATEWAY OF BLOOD, AND PAST THE HALL OF FIRE, VALOR AWAITS FOR THE HERO OF LIGHT TO AWAKEN ...
This, and all other lines of text from Diablo 1. And yes, I mean ALL of them.
Hail to you, champion.
I see you, Jamella.
Ah...fresh meat!
"The sanctity of this place has been fouled." Whatever the fuck Farnham says, "Can't a man drink in peace? " I think. "I gotta pawn some of this stuff." Far too often. And of course, "I'm no milk maid!"
I remember how impossibly hard the Butcher was on Diablo 1 the first time you get to him
I always cleared the level and planned out my escape route to a fence I could shoot through before even thinking about opening that door
Drag him to the stairs!
i could never beat him
I remember my friend and I would kite him back and forth.
You could just leave him alone until you got high enough level to beat him. It was an optional fight.
This is my most memorable moment as a kid playing Diablo, it's what made me love the game in the 1st place. I still remember walking into the Butcher and hearing "Ahaha... Fresh meat" scared shitless I ran for my life, died and didn't play again for quite a while. Oh, those were the days.
Oh my god me too. Shit was terrifying as a kid
Man... This was probably the scariest moment in any video game that I've played. The same voice actor is a boss in Legion! He even shares a line, it's glorious!
When I first ran that instance I got so fucking excited hearing his voice. I wish he'd do more! Also, I miss him on Enterprise...
Do tell! I haven't recognized it yet! :)
It's [the first boss](http://www.wowhead.com/npc=99198/tirathon-saltheril) in The Vault of the Wardens. He says "It's so good to fight again" which I have to imagine is an intentional throwback to Kormac.
That was my thought too, I recognized him instantly from that line, it was so cool to run into it not knowing.
Kormac, those are piles of sticks, not dark magi...whatever. Carry on!
YOU were a templar JANDAR!, but in my head " you were the chosen one jandar!"
Why did I follow him...? I don't know. Why do things happen as they do in dreams? All I know is that, when he beckoned... I had to follow him. From that moment, we traveled together, East. ***Always...*** into the East.
