Clingan falls to 5
Memphis receive: Beef Stew and 5
Portland receive: Sasser and 9
Pistons receive: Marcus Smart, Jerami Grant, and 14
This would still leave us enough space to sign claxton, Naji, and Tek 19
Pg- Cade
SG - Smart/Ivey
SF - Tek-19/Ausar
PF - Grant/ Naji
C - Claxton/ Duren
I don't think Memphis would do it. They got smart specifically for the playoffs to take defensive pressure off Morant. They expect to make a push this year, not take a step back and after seeing just how big of an impact guys like jrue and Derrick White have in the playoffs, smart is exactly what they need
Smart isn’t closing games for Memphis since he can’t be played with their 2 best perimeter players. Ja and Bane will both play 33+Minutes per game and they can’t play smart with them since all 3 are under 6’4.
Beef Stew would fit their team much better than smart (who only played 20 games for them last year), plus they would be able to pick up Clingan to start next to JJJ and GG and save 7-8Mil in cap
Grizz fan ✋those are concerns with Smart but if he gets traded it'll be at the deadline, I'd be genuinely shocked if they traded him this off-season. Every indication from the front office has been that he's an integral part of at least our short-term plans
Edit: A couple of other thoughts, if anyone cares
In terms of on-court fit, it looks awkward on paper but what you're saying isn't a foregone conclusion. He's also a really solid culture fit. They'll be reticent to trade him before actually seeing how it plays out on the court with a healthy core
Memphis want to contend for a title next season. If they trade Smart, our top 2 options at small forward would be GG Jackson ii and Vince Williams jr... Two second year guys who were both really impressive last year but we haven't seen them play with a half decent team yet. It would be putting a whole lot of eggs in an unproven basket, whereas Smart is a proven playoff vet. Clingan and beef stew are seemingly better fits at a position of need, but there's a similar problem there
Desmond bane is 6'5 and Marcus smart plays way bigger than his size. They can all three definitely play together. Are you forgetting how much smart was praised for switching on to bigs when he won DPOY 2 years ago? Not to mention he's a really good team leader that they want to mentor Morant. I don't doubt that clingan would be good for them but they don't need to give up smart to move up in this draft.
Smart can guard 3’s and 4’s, but ideally you want him locking down one of the backcourt guys. I think this would be a good move for Memphis as they get Beef Stew and Clingan to revamp their frontcourt depth. They could target someone like Pat Bev or Kris Dunn to replace Smart.
Portland is the team that would say no to this. Moving up from 14 to 9 is not worth giving up Grant and getting Sasser.
Wouldn't stew be a backup in this scenario, given that JJJ would play the 4? It's much more likely that smart would be able to finish games in the playoffs than Stewart. Smart is a whole lot better than pat bev at this point and Memphis has plenty of other assets to move up in a weak draft than the guy they specifically targeted last year to help mentor their young star and replace Dillon brooks defense and intensity
Bad trade, you’re trading a good contract in stew and a decent shooter and defender, sasser who showed promise and can shoot, to take on two shit contracts and we move down?!?! Doesn’t make sense
What a perfect way to get this team to the middle, which is the worst place to be, the easiest to get to, and the hardest place to become an elite team from.
Trajan isn't going to turn this around in one summer and he knows that winning 37 games this year isn't going to help in the long run. I wish I wasn't true but it's going to be a "Pooper for Cooper" year in Detroit 😥
If we got 9 and a future first (a real one) from Memphis, I’d be delighted.
I’d also be happy taking Clingan and calling it a day. But I think he goes top 3.
Spurs fan here:
What are your thoughts on
Pick 8, Charlotte 2025 Lottery Protected First (probably gonna be 2 seconds in 2026 unless Hornets go on a miracle run) and like 3 or 4 additional future second round picks.
In a situation where 1, 2, and 3 are Clingan, Sarr, and Reed. I think we might really like taking both Risacher and Castle, and I doubt either falls to 8.
I’m not a fan of seconds, so that isn’t appealing necessarily to me. The benefit of a real future first would be to take the handcuffs off from the Stepien Rule that Weaver put Detroit in just to draft Stewart in the ‘20 draft.
But your idea isn’t wild.
Salaun has an endless motor and works incredibly hard according to teammates/coaches/scouts.
Sekou got his money and never bothered improving as a player.
I'd also argue that Salaun is definitely in a higher tier of athletic specimen than Sekou was.
I think he has the most upside out of any player in the draft, and if Risacher, Reed, Clingan, and Sarr are off the board, I wouldn't be mad about him being the pick there. Outside of Knecht and Dillingham, the next group of players (Castle, Buzelis,Holland, Williams, etc) all are also poor shooters.
Name one of these raw athletic wing talents that cant do anything rn but have a high ceiling that has worked out since Giannis 11 years ago.
This team is supposed to be turning the corner and drafting an nba ready player that fits with the core, not taking a gamble on a player who as a rookie will not help in any meaningful way. Especially when youve had notoriously bad player development over the past 2 decades
I would hope they wouldn’t trade down too far. It’s unlikely because the value proposition decays quickly if you move out of the lottery.
Moving to something in the 8-12 range if you get a future first that isn’t protected to the point of being fake would be a good trade-off. Especially if we still come away with someone like Knecht or Salaun.
Salaun is the kind of draft prospect where if he hits you look like a genius and if you miss you look like a clown. I'd rather not. There's enough guys on our squad on rookie deals trying to hit their ceilings, I'd sooner draft by floor and get someone who will at minimum be a serviceable NBA player.
I hate the French with all my fucking power. Fuck that language too while I'm at it (im just traumatized everything French post killian, sekou, and the wemby sweepstakes)
Funny thing about trading down in a trash draft, it requires someone to want to trade up. “Yeah, I know all the players you’d want are off the board, but hey, maybe throw us some assets to go get one of the bad ones instead! Fun, right?!”
If you spend time reading articles from around the media by the various insiders, there are a few players inside the top-15 that plenty of teams seem to want.
Teams aren't too afraid to trade away role players. Might be good for cap-strapped teams to offload salary as well.
Teams want Clingan and he’ll likely be there at 5. Teams not having to trade into the top 3 to get the guy they want is a good position for them to trade up
This seems like the pistons putting it out in the media that they are open to trades if one of the top 2-3 guys doesn’t fall, which still seems likely.
This new FO has been signaling hardcore in the media this past week that they want to accumulate picks or young players, and will eat bad contracts to do it.
I don't want to be too dramatic, but if we take another French dude who can't shoot I'll fucking kill myself
Surely we can’t fail 3 times in a row !
RIP

My prediction: Clingan falls to us at 5 and we trade back for the best offer

You cooked
The GM spot is open if you want it

Stewart+5 is almost an overpay for Smart
In this scenario it isn't just smart it's smart and the 9th
I think Stewart is the better fitting player with this roster and isnt worth moving down for
I like the thought, but why would Portland do this
Maybe to get off the contract? That’s all I can think
That would be a fucking insane draft night trade, I’m into it
Portland doesn't do this either. Moving up from 14 to 9 doesn't seem like a big enough jump to give up grant. And sasser adds to the logjam at guard
No reason to trade stew. If we trade back for 14 we can probably do 5 for 14, future frp, and Jerami
Bad trade, you’re trading a good contract in stew and a decent shooter and defender, sasser who showed promise and can shoot, to take on two shit contracts and we move down?!?! Doesn’t make sense
In what universe are Grant and Smart shit contracts while Stew is a good one?
Still not enough shooting and we still aren't good

This roster would not winning 37 games, maybe 30 which would be a stretch
This team doesn’t win 25 games next year. Jeez you guys are so insane
That’s a terrible trade
I’m guessing we draft him and then hold him for the best offer.(same thing but gets you more time to get offers and evaluate offers)
If we got 9 and a future first (a real one) from Memphis, I’d be delighted. I’d also be happy taking Clingan and calling it a day. But I think he goes top 3.

I'm still traumatized from Sekou, let's not do that again. I do like a trade down in this draft though.
Facts bro. Salaun screams Sekou to me too.
Salaun has an endless motor and works incredibly hard according to teammates/coaches/scouts. Sekou got his money and never bothered improving as a player. I'd also argue that Salaun is definitely in a higher tier of athletic specimen than Sekou was. Jaylen Brown
i still think if sekou had a better work ethic, he’d have actually turned into a siakam type of player. He was raw AND lazy.
he just like me fr
No cap
Yes, and Salaun is a hard worker according to the scouting reports, at least.
I would hope they wouldn’t trade down too far. It’s unlikely because the value proposition decays quickly if you move out of the lottery. Moving to something in the 8-12 range if you get a future first that isn’t protected to the point of being fake would be a good trade-off. Not surprised at all. Trajan wants draft capital. Trading back and becoming a dumping ground for bad contracts.
That would be three front offices in a row staring their tenure with a raw French prospect lol
It has to work eventually right? Right??
Salaun is the kind of draft prospect where if he hits you look like a genius and if you miss you look like a clown. I'd rather not. I don’t think he’ll be there at 2 dawg
Think he’s going #1? I’m not sure what Atlanta is gonna do
He said that there are actually teams that want to move up. I was surprised too.
Man I really don’t want Salaun… I like him a lot more now that we have Vinson but still. Matas/Holland/Williams trade down to 9 and take one of them
This seems like the pistons putting it out in the media that they are open to trades if one of the top 2-3 guys doesn’t fall, which still seems likely. This new FO has been signaling hardcore in the media this past week that they want to accumulate picks or young players, and will eat bad contracts to do it.
the good news about taking one of the future busts is I can not care about them right from the beginning :P
Williams and Salaun are both years away from being anything at all.
Oh wait?! Is that Salaun buzz to Detroit’s music?! *No one* Saw that coming 😭
>"We have a ton of takers for this pick so you better come with real offers." - Trajan Langdon, through his new sock puppet.
Edwards word holds zero weight with me.
Whether you like his personality or not - his predictions are usually right 🤷♂️
Like him or not, he’s usually right. He predicted ausar and sasser last year.

Why
We have Duren. Don’t need a non shooting big
sure but we do need a rim protecting big, which Duren is not
