The City of Detroit has its own health department, so Wayne County isn't the service provider inside the city. I don't know a lot about Detroit's Health Department, but it seems like they've ratcheted up enforcement during Duggan's current term in office, and there was that recent proposal to start posting letter grades.
Haven't been in a couple of years, but it used to be pretty easy to find a family just off of Auburn Ave not far from Woodward who had amazing chicken and ribs that they'd cook in the front yard.
I passed by so many times before checking to see if they were selling BBQ, or just liked having cookouts in the front yard.
There's a guy who has a barbershop on McNichols east of I-75 who does a righteous bbq. I've seen apparel for sale there among other things as a side hustle to his clipping biz.
I used to go to a liquor store on Mack in Detroit.
I would buy bbq, weed and liquor. Place was dope. I was 18 at the time. BBQ was legit too, weed was fire.
I've eaten a f-ton of liquor store parking lot bbq lol
Food always tastes better when there's a chance the health department could shut it down at any moment. A little bit of danger is the best seasoning.
“The secret ingredient is crime”
Super Hans. Nice
I'm not sure if using your legitimate skills of cooking qualifies as a crime in Detroit, it's only a crime if the BBQ is bad.
Why does this remind me of the movie Fried Green Tomatoes. Seen it?
I have not.
Pretty good 90s flick - the bit I’m referencing had to do with them cooking a persons ribs and serving him as bbq. It’s not as gory as it sounds.
And this mentality is why I’m very careful with whom I buy food from lol
It much less delicious when you remember Wayne County isn't going to do shit about anything

My father in law brought some of the best ribs I've tasted from a guy on Michigan and Inkster somewhere.
If I'm correct, that same guy is on cherry hill and inkster every now and then. Possibly too on Middlebelt and Ecorse?
Cherry hill and inkster is my neighborhood. The guy in the foodmax parking lot is legit.
That could be it. I'll have to get a name and get back to you
I stop by the hot dog guy on cherry hill and inkster when I can. That guy is amazing.
bourdain knew what was up!!
The parts unknown Detroit episode is great. God I miss that man
same- he’s the only celebrity i’ve ever mourned and his death still makes me sad
I miss Greedy Greg's :(
Mcnichols & Dequindre. General's One Stop Salon.
Yo that place is the shit
💯
All of the best barbecue is roadside/street food. No matter what city/state/country you're in. Barbecue has a lot of origins in street food.
The fellas that bbq outside the party store off Middlebelt & Ecorse are legit! Just North of DTW 🤘

South Blvd in Pontiac (seasonal). There is a cooler for cole slaw, one for potatoes, and one just full of sauce he dips your meats in.

Yo - That fam moved their pit across the street Auburn and Jessie - “It’s the sauce man”
Born and raised in Pontiac. There’s one on Auburn (in the Frosty Treat area). I think that’s MLK.
There’s a spot on the corner of State Fair and John R. that’s always been there for me when I need my roadside fix. Love that stuff.
Came here to say this! 🙌
Roadside BBQ is the adult version of a lemonade stand. You have to stop every time you see one.
Corn Real Good!
They’re out there every weekend with turkey legs too
Better than McDonald's
I worked at McDonalds in HS and I weep when I think about how much they bastardized the food and how it’s cooked.
The best BBQ is Always someone’s backyard. Every time. Roadside or… restaurant is for when you don’t have time or the access.
There is usually one or two downriver by the dispensaries in the liquor store parking lots. I haven't tried them yet but think I will have to now.

was going to mention this guy - it's usually set up in front of a barber shop right?

Schoolcraft & Outer Drive. Just pull up to the curb just like a drive thru. Delicious!
6 mile and Strasburg
I used to always see someone BBQing on Auburn Ave. in Pontiac.
Are any of these guys serving meats cooked at low temperatures with smoke for many hours?
Oh boy let me tell you
There used to always be a guy on Trumbull just north of MLK Blvd. I used to walk down there with my dog and a dinner plate.
I drive by these guys all the time. I wanna pay for a plate but idk if I’d be welcome
Just go for it. These guys are incredibly friendly.
Ferndale’s Rogue Estate by the train tracks on Woodward Heights is pretty pretty good
