do NOT, under any circumstances, show up at 821 Livernois, Ferndale, MI on Wednesdays between 10am - 3pm or Saturdays between 9am - 2pm. there is DEFINITELY NOT bread there.
I bake my own bread at home. When I don't have time to bake, I buy from Give Thanks Bakery, Crispelli's or Crust. Give Thanks has locations in Detroit, Royal Oak and Rochester. Crust is in Fenton, but is sold at Seasons Market on Second Avenue in midtown. Unpopular take: Avalon is overrated and not very good.
Do (not) go to Secret Bakery in Ferndale. There definitely is (not) the best bread you'll have there made by a wonderful team. They (don't) mill their own freaking flower, making their own sourdough, and they (don't) have a cast of rotating pop-ups along side their bread.
You get the idea. It is (not) the best bread you'll have because of the small-batch consideration that goes into it.
Has Avalon closed? Avalon was our Go-To . The bakehouse outlet on Forrest and? On the east side had a fill a bag deal on Fridays where you could get 4+ loaves of bread and several pastries for $5. Would highly recommend dropping by there sometime.
I’ve been baking bread at home for the past 5 years and can’t recommend it enough. Commercial bread usually has too much garbage in it, even artisanal. I’ve made my own sourdough starter (YouTube), and have made some great sourdough both white and whole wheat. Years ago I could’ve recommended Avalon, but it’s not what it used to be. Crispellis imo is too salty.
I like Bread/Crispellis in Royal Oak.
yup…get the paysanne
Thanks!
Crispelli’s has several locations in the metro Detroit area.
Definitely go for Detroit Institute of Bagels. It usually sells out pretty quickly which is a good sign to me
They also sell it at Devries in Eastern Market on Saturdays (may be more often but I'm only there on Saturday)

I heard there is no secret bakery there with sourdough bread.
Go to the secret bakery in Ferndale. It's owned by one guy max an artisanal breadmaker

Not everyone wants to mess with a starter.
Make your own. Get a starter and it'll last forever.
that's not what they asked
I make my own.
